The Tacoma got Tow Vehicle of the Year from Trailer Boat magazine. Check it out at http://www.trailerboats.com/output.cfm?id=944533

"There is an item described as "THEFT DETERRENT/REGISTRATION" for which they are charging $288+tax. My understanding is that this item includes window etching plus some insurance coverage should the vehicle be stolen and not recovered. I don't want to pay for this extra insurance coverage. I already pay too much money for auto insurance and I don't want or need this extra theft insurance.:

I refused this, and crossed this out on my dealership's contract.

VIN etching kits are $10->20 on eBay, if you really want it.

My dealership etched the truck anyway, as they do all of them as they prep them. I think having the vehicles pre-etched makes the sale easier for them. As my truck was ordered, that excuse went out the window. :D

" Thanks for the thoughts and/or information concerning my post. Is there anything I need to specify when ordering the truck...ie...heavy duty radiator and or oil/transmission fluid cooler?"

The tow package includes all the cool stuff to tow 6500 pounds.

    Have fun!

    Hey,

Great article!!! Thanks for posting it. It was exactly what I was looking for in comparison to its rivals. Sounds like I've got all I need to make an informed decision.

    Dave:
I am glad that I saw your message today. I was prepared to order a Extang cover for my '05 Tacoma DC. Based on your message, Extang is apparently still working on fit, installation and style for the new Tacoma. Is that correct? When can I confidently order a lift-up style cover? Thanks.

I need to get a toolbox for my Taco. I hate to spend $500 on the one from Toyota, and was wondering if anyone has it and what you think? I canonot find a local dealer with one in stock for me to see. Would like to get an aftermarket one for about half the price but worry about damaging the composite bed. Hearing your experiences will be helpful.

" Great article!!! Thanks for posting it."

    Ditto! Thanks for the post.

The mag's experience pretty much matches mine when I'm towing 3000 pounds of woodworking stuff in New England. I don't pull the trailer out of water (cast iron rusts!), so I can't vouch for that part...

I know this was discussed before but I was just wondering if anyone has gotten anything recently.

Anything good/bad on the Aux-Pod, iPod2Car and others with that type of connection? Any recomendations? Anybody have one that displays the artist and track on the stock radio?

This forum is a big help, many thanks. ;)

Metra just released 2005 Dashkit for 05 Tacomas, part # 99-8214...I'm gonna get one, time for some audio upgrade Pioneer AVIC-N2,Fusion speakers and subs, rockin' soundstream amps baby...
  • ruskastudruskastud Member Posts: 34
Where did you find that Dashkit? I looked on Metra's website, and it is not listed. This has been the only reason I have not purchased my '05 Tacoma. I can not live with out an mp3 player. Hope this Metra kit looks decent enough to put in a brand new truck! :)

Pics?? or links would work too.

"This has been the only reason I have not purchased my '05 Tacoma. I can not live with out an mp3 player. "

There are several adaptors to add an aux input to the factory stereos for less than $80.
  • ruskastudruskastud Member Posts: 34
But then I'd have to buy a portable mp3 player. And, no, I do not have one, because I would never use it. I either listen to music in my car or at home, thus having a portable mp3 player would be completely useless to me, and you do not get the same fuctionality as you do with an in-dash receiver. :P

pfaff, have you received it yet?

I'm in the same situation in Timmins Ontario. I ordered the same model with towing package in Indigo Ink on March 18th and I still don't have it. It was built May 16th (it should have been April production) (I have a serial number now) and they gave me June 15 as the ETA. Now it looks like I'll have to wait an extra week on top of that. if these trucks weren't so rare, I probably would have backed out of the deal a while back. Getting my sales guy (in Ottawa) to call me back is like pulling teeth. If and when it finally arrives, I hope there's a customer satisfaction survey.

for those of you with the buzzing noise it is fixable. I brought my new Prerunner to the dealer to have the howling noise fixed. On my way to the dealer I heard the buzzing for the first time. They were able to fix the buzz but not the howling. The buzz was coming from a piece of loose trim. When the air gets under it there would be a buzz similar to if you blew through a blade of grass between your thumbs. Anyway, they fixed that. If you want it fixed call Maroone Toyota in Pembroke Pines Florida and ask to speak to the service manager.

As for the howling, I am able to stop the noise by taping off all around the passenger side doors. The only part I don't tape off is the rear at the bed. If I take a strip of tape off from any location the noise comes bacl so it's basically getting in a whipping around to produce the noise. Curious thing though is that it only comes from the passenger side. Anyway, the dealer tried replacing all of the gaskets, resealing the rear side window and also replacing the rear sliding window and gasket to no avail. The regional tech who came out to further investigate said the noise was "commercially acceptable". Not the answer I was expecting to hear. I am a very determined person and I will probably find a fix for it myself at some point. Hope this info is of help to some of you out there.
  • angela6angela6 Member Posts: 9
do you know where exactly the loose piece of trim was. I am planning on taking my truck back to the dealership with this new information. I really want to get it fixed. i live in texas and i was unable to get in touch with the service manager at maroone toyota to find out how they fixed it. so if you can provide everyone with that information, please let us know. thanks.

First of all, thanks all for the inputs about the tailgate. For those of you who have package 7 (SH) or even package 8 (SJ), do you have a button marked "AUTO LSD" on your left of the dashboard? I thought my truck should have this button since I have package 7, but it doesn't ? Am I missing something?
    Thanks a lot

I've just about completed customizing my 2005 X-Tra Cab Sport except for a Tonneau Cover. Seems like not a whole lot of choices or options out there for 2005 Tacos. I Like the Looks of the BlackMax from Extang but I'm curious if anyone might have suggestions, comments or experiences with this product or others for that matter. I'm Looking for ideas as to what might work and look best on my Silver Streak Mica Tacoma.

Any one have a rattle in their passenger doors? I think my rattle is caused by the seatbelt assembly. It sounds like the door is not tight when going over severe potholes and rough road surface. I can also hear it when I'm in my garage and turn the vehicle off. The passenger seat also seems to rock and rattle a bit. Any comments? Maybe I should check my engine mounts.

For you I4 owners. I found this while surfing the web.
I have a Silver 4x2 Access Cab with the speedo 4mph too fast problem and just turned 7000 miles.

At this site, look at the 3rd page down.

In this picture, which is the "door sill protector": the black strip that has the word "Tacoma" on it or the gray strip above it?

    Door sill protector pic
  • kevinmtbkevinmtb Member Posts: 5
It is the black strip with "Toyota" on it. You're suppose to remove the grey piece (just lift up on it) before installing the protector. Pretty simple to install, just peel and stick then reinstall grey piece.

The LSD is a mechanical diferential. There is no button. You've probably mistaken it for the lock differential.
  • soundman34soundman34 Member Posts: 36
I called Metra and they have the part number but have not yet released the kit. It is still in production. They estimate by the end of June it will be released. You can pre-order one though.

I special ordered my taco with all premium packages OG and towing in January and received it in Spokane, WA on May 10th. I checked the window sticker to ensure all items ordered were included and drove off. A week later, I discovered the truck had the Standard B Type wipers eventhough I order the intermittent wipers and the window sticker showed that they were included.

After sending a photo of the wiper lever and acopy of the window sticker to the dealer, they finally conceded that it was a mistake. They had never seen this problem before and ordered the new intermitten wiper parts . After two weeks they still haven't arrived.

Meanwhile back at the ranch after clocking a total of 385 miles, the truck will not turn over. The battery is fine. My guess is that the security system, the upgraded VIP RS 3200, has immobilized the starting system. Turning the key illicites a clunk sound but no engagement. It's being towed to the dealer today. Still no replacement wiper parts are in.

    Anybody else have these problems?

Approx. 28.3" tires will cure the 4 cyl. (non-Prerunner) speedo problem. I went to 225/75r15 tires. :shades:

Has anyone mounted the BAK runningboards for their Tacoma? Are they of high quality?
  • asac1asac1 Member Posts: 30
Do any of you have experience with A.R.E. covers. Are they built well and worth the $850?
  • psmerdonpsmerdon Member Posts: 2
I don't know the exact location. The service manager at Maroone who fixed it is "John" so maybe you could ask for him. Just tell him you know someone who recently brought a white tacoma in for a wind and buzz noise and wanted to know what piece of trim to look at. When I broght my truck in I knew the buzz was there but never mentioned it to the dealer. When I picked my truck up that night they told ME about the buzz and said they fixed it. He indicated it was somewhere towards the middle of the vehicle in the dash board area.

Has anyone found out a fix for the squeaking in the rear end when you go over bumps? My dealer said it was a rock in my skid plate...lame answer and the squeak is still here! Any info. would be great. Even with the squeaks I still love this truck!!
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
My dealer told me that these trucks have 3 leaf springs and should have 4. I have requested my leaf springs be changed and a fourth one added under warranty. I went on a long trip on the weekend and got 21.5 MPG (US gallon)/25.8 MPG (Canadian gallon). I was able to get over 455 miles (733km) on a tank of gas and still have 9 litres (2.4 US gallons) left over. How does this compare to what others are getting ?

At this link you can see what a fairly dusty white 4x4 Access Cab with a matching Snugtop shell looks like out in the middle of nowhere. This particular nowhere happened to be at 4500 feet in the Inyo Mountains a couple of hours off of the pavement in the northwest corner of Death Valley. This truck carries a pretty heavy load a lot better than my 1999 ExtraCab did in the same circumstances. Great machine.

Hey All, I'm just looking for a good reliable truck and I'm looking at Tacoma's. I just need a simple truck, 2x4 (no extend cab), stick or auto. Can anyone tell me the pro's and con's and if there are any major differences between years 2002 through 2004 to justify paying the higher price?. I read something about postion of parking brake, pull out from bottom of dash or pull up from console? Did the p-brake postion change in 2003? Which year has the white dash gauges? What is the mfg warranty? If I get a 2002, is the warranty up? I found a 2002 with 40k asking $7500 and a 2004 with 5k asking $12,400. Thanks for any input you can offer.
  • tacomafuntacomafun Member Posts: 9
You should probably keep on topic woosahhh1 (05+ tacomas) from now on, but here it is:

2002: There were no significant changes for 2002.
2003: Antilock brakes were made standard on all models for 2003.
2004: Tacoma no longer comes with the optional flare-fender StepSide bed.

These are the changes of the truck thru ConsumerGuide. As for the p-brake position, i've driven an '04 and i do not recall it being located on the console, it might have been moved. The '02 I drove definitely had it. My opinion is to go with the 2004. Toyota's warranty for the truck is 3yrs/36000mi -bumper to bumper... and 5yrs/60000mi - extended power train. Corrosion - is 5 years/unlimited. Already, the '02 is out of warranty and soon to be 4 years old. It really depends on how long u plan to keep the truck. IMO, get the 04, it's practically new.
  • ush00zush00z Member Posts: 30
The squeaking is the result of the rear leaf springs banging on each other. Just bounce the rear of the truck hard and you'll hear it too.

Look at the opening between your rear springs. There might be some rust spots. I'm going to have my dealer replace the leaf spring soon, and I'll keep asking them to do so until they get it right.
  • dcab1dcab1 Member Posts: 15
Does anyone have a problem with the location of the rear view mirror it seems to me to be in the way of left hand turns. No other problems. The seat belt noise I thought I had was coming from a child's leveling gauge in a child seat, sound was bouncing off of the window on the drivers side. The gauge is a little ball in a glass tube to tell you when the seat is level, dealership was no help in finding this noise, they said it was the seat belt height adjustment and they couldn't fix it.

    Hi guys,

I'm *really* struggling to pick a new vehicle. What I'm looking for is

    - ability to haul things like lumber from home depot etc. Basically a truck or SUV.
    - *reasonable* gas economy
    - ability to put a child-seat in because my wife and I are planning to have a baby
    - reasonable price (ie 4 Runner is too pricey for my tastes)

I really like the 4-door Tacoma - problem is, my garage is too short for it (also not keen on parking something that long). So I'm eyeballing the access cab model. Any of you tried to take a baby in the access cab model? If so, how was it?
Or is that idea pretty much a non-starter?
  • wooddorkerwooddorker Member Posts: 300
Take your seat to a dealership and try it. Any decent dealership will be glad to test it out.
  • shroudshroud Member Posts: 78
That's a good point. Don't have one yet cuz we don't have a baby yet (not pregnant either). But it's a major future consideration :)

"That's a good point. Don't have one yet cuz we don't have a baby yet (not pregnant either). But it's a major future consideration"

    Hay jackhammer

Is the dealer going to do the springs?
If so how should I approach the to get mine done?

    Thanks.
  • jackhammerjackhammer Member Posts: 92
    Hi Burfal
Actually it was my dealer who suggested it should have 4 leaf springs. These were ordered almost 3 weeks ago now. They are on back order I guess because we all will be needing them sometime or another. I would imagine shortly you will see a recall on them In the meantime to get rid of the annoying squeek he suggested WD40.
  • 1violinist1violinist Member Posts: 338
I see Tacoma accessories on the Internet for almost half the dealer's price. My question is what level of expertise and/or special tools you should have to install them yourself, for example:

    - Alarm system
    - Roof rack
    - Running board
    - Hood protector
    - Exhaust tip
    - Floor mats -- just kidding! :-)
  • tacomaguytacomaguy Member Posts: 41
I purchased the stock Tacoma black plastic running boards for my prerunner access cab and they went on with no problems. Have had them on since the
first part of April and they have been holding up great. I step on them every time
I get into the cab and am not afraid to put all of my weight on them. I got them
mainly to protect the paint from rock chips and to save the upholstery on the edge of the driver's seat from wearing as I get out. The only draw back is that they are
almost at the floor height so there really isn't any "step up" and you have to
maneuver over them when getting out. You can see the running boards at the snugtop canopy website. Go to the super sport page and scroll down to the Tacoma. My truck is impulse red with a canopy just like in their picture.
I figured that if they picked that combination for their publicity picture, it was
    good enough for me.
