I used Pennzoil 5w-30, and a genuine Toyota filter & plug gasket ($3.99 at my dealer for both parts), in my 4L V6. Once I get fully broken in, I'll be switching to Mobil 1. I usually use Valvoline, but my parts guy was out of 5w-30, so I went with Pennzoil. I think you'll be fine with any major brand (Mobil, Castrol, Havoline, Pennzoil, Quaker State, Valvoline, etc...) that meets the API spec in the manual. The manual also states the weight you should use, based on your conditions. Read the manual...

I'm actually pretty impressed at the construction of the Toyota filter. It's nicely made, all metal, includes the necessary anti-drainback valve, and comes sealed, with the gasket pre-greased. All at an extremely reasonable price! Much nicer than $9 Fram versions I looked at in the store. For my Jeep, I usually use Purolator, Napa Gold, or Wix filters, as I'm not impressed with Chrysler OEM filters.

I used a 20oz. Coke bottle to catch the draining from the oil filter drip ring.

This is the second easiest oil & filter change vehicle I've ever done, running behind my '85 Toyota 4 cyl 22R, where you could just reach in and grab the filter. The '05 only runs second as the drain plug is just a tad harder to reach. Overall, both are brilliant designs when compared to my '95 King Cab!

I guess there's no way to pre-fill the filter since it goes on upside down, right?

The manual says the V6 holds 5.5 quarts. I guess that includes the oil held in the filter after starting the engine. :confuse:

"I guess there's no way to pre-fill the filter since it goes on upside down, right?"

Not in the true sense. I poured oil into the filter to soak the element, so some oil was in the filter, but it was not prefilled. You couldn't completely prefill the 22R's either, as it mounted to the side, as is my Jeep 4.0L's oil filter. My 22R went 300k+, never using a drop between changes.

If you really wanted to fill the filter, I suppose you could crank it with the door (gray non-immobilizer) key before actually starting the engine with the correct key.

"The manual says the V6 holds 5.5 quarts. I guess that includes the oil held in the filter after starting the engine."

That's my experience. 5 qts. brought it to just below full. After starting, checking for leaks, shutting down, and waiting a few minutes, the extra 1/2 qt. brought it right to the full dot.

I suggest AMSOIL 5W-30 ASL and the SDF57 AMSOIL filter to match. If you are going to spend the money on something like mobil-1 you might as well get the best. I used to use AMSOIL on my BMW, the stuff is incredible especially in cold weather areas, no problem with start-up. Of course you need to wait until after the break-in period. I've read change at 3500 (get all the metal shavings out) with a petroleum based oil (Havoline rated the best 5W-30 petro based) and then start with the synthetic at 6000 just to make sure all the seals have bonded. Or wait till your first change at 5000 to switch over.

    Good Day,
But I think that even when the oil filter is right side up and you fill it with oil,
I do not think it will make a difference cus, the galleries are empty ok, the oil gets picked up by the pump in the sump and it will push the oil up thru the galleries then the oil will finally get to the filter where it push the oil inside, and so on.
So I think that putting oil in the filter just do not matter. even if the pump push the oil and the oil push the air in the galleries you will have a laps of time with lil oil.

Anyone have any good/bad experiences with these things?

I really don't like the "brackets" idea of the toyota part. Some people have said its wobbly and the brackets might scratch the paint, which defeats its purpose all together.

Does anyone make a solid piece shield, that screws under the hood? I've seen some people mention Lund and Auto Focus.

Any input would be appeciated before I buy one.

Do you sell it? :surprise: If you do, you should mention that.

My three vehicles typically get about 4k miles between 6 month changes. I have yet to see the wisdom of spending even more money over Mobil 1 when I'm actually pulling it out early as it is. My 22R went 300k on dino oil changed every 3k miles.

I'd love to see an objective lab test between the Amsoil filter and a Toyota OEM model, but I doubt I ever will. Amsoil seems like good stuff, but I can't get by the number of markups it gets before it arrives at the buyer.

Well if you only drive 8,000 miles a year (good for you), I guess it doesn't make sense for an extended drain oil.

    No, I don't sell it.

Stick with your fossil oil. It's sad to hear people that are afraid of new technology. I hear those new computer things work real well but i'll stick with my typewriter thanks.

I suggest doing some research before you open your mouth.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to work through Reno because I have relatives who live in Tahoe, which is near Reno. I wanna be able to buy my truck, drive a little ways and crash for free before driving home. We'll see though. I might get desperate soon and look to Carson anyway.

    Update:

I checked toyota.com again yesturday and guess what? I could select my truck in black! I checked it again today and I couldn't. The web site is updated daily! It's a completely unreliable mess!

I called my local dealer yesturday and told him the story. He said he saw my truck on the computer going to a dealership in a nearby city, but he wasn't sure whether that one was special ordered and already reserved. He's trying to get it for me today.

Bottom line is, I guess there truly is no way to really know where or if your particular truck is going to be made in your area. This situation is driving me crazy. I just want my truck.

I took mine to the dealership yesterday for the same problem with the leaf springs. My dealer told me that a likely problem is that the new model only has 3 leaf springs on each side vs. 4 from past models like the 95 T100 that I used to have. So they are going to put 4 leaf springs on for me.

You guys should ask at local body shops about "paint protector film", the clear stuff that peels and sticks on body panels. This is the same stuff they put on race car noses so they don't have to be repainted every race.

The film can be run under the hood protector to protect the hood where the hardware is, or even replace the protector all together, along the front edge of the hood. Just protecting the guard's hardware, you may be able to get by with scraps, which may even be free.

I think 3M, Dupont, and PPG make versions of the stuff.

Same here. The AC is excellent! Almost never use high speed and I'm in Houston. Mine is a Indigo Ink Pearl so it does build up some heat.

I have impusle red pearl, it does not get hot inside like i thought it would, reflects heat like white does, which also helps in cooling interior.

We went and looked at them early this morning. Carrie liked yours best, so that's what she got, Black Sand Pearl/Graphite, Access Cab, 6 spd, TRD Off-Road #2.

She's ecstatic, I'm worn out from the haggle. There were so many screw ups it took all day to get the deal done.

But the irony about your truck is this, it arrived here as part of a swap after first being allocated to a different dealership. And they told me it was a special order not picked up, I kid you not.

BTW, it was the wife who wanted black. I wanted the silver. She won.

I have a new truck on order and the dealer is trying to sell me on exteded warranty.Does anyone know if this is a good idea or not? It's fairly pricey.
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
Alot of this is going to depend on how long you plan on keeping the truck. If you're only planning on keeping it for the period that it's going to be covered under the 36/36,000, probably not. Also, do you have enough cash reserves for an unexpected expense if it does come up? In 10years of owning Toyota's, I've always had them on my family's Toyota's and have in every case except one recieved more than my initial investment back. In one case it was a sunroof cable that needed replacing, another it was "only" an ABS sensor, but they needed to replace the whole steering knuckle on that side of the car. With having a family I don't have alot of reserves for unexpected expenses, so it has proved invaluable, but again it depends on the circumstances. Keep in mind that you are not required to purchase it at the dealer that you purchased your car from unless you wish to incorporate it into your finance contract and that you can purchase it at any time up to the expiration of the factory 36/36,000 as well.

    Hope this helps.

the hood protectors offered by toyota for the 2005 tacomas does come with a protective film that you place between the hood and the brackets to prevent scratching. i purchased a hood protector for my 2005 DDC a month ago and installed it myself in about 10 minutes by myself. I have a black tacoma and it actually looks quite good. it has stopped rocks from chipping my hood and windshield. i do alot of highway driving where there is alot of construction going on so the hood protector was a good investment for me.

Check with Marina Del Rey Toyota, when I bought my *gasp* silver Taco, they had black ones on the lot. Culver City Toyota is also good sized, but I don't know what they have in stock. If they have it though, you might get your dealer to make atrade!

    Good luck.

Yeah, go with the black. I almost bought a silver one, but I changed my mind at the last minute. I have the only black one that I have seen in my area. I've seen a few silver ones. Black looks so sweet when it's polished and clean. If you polish and wax it, it shows awesome depth and reflection. I get compliments all the time. :shades:

Hello, I bought a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 2 months ago and I have the same problem with my clutch. It wiggles when it is depressed a few centimeters. What did Toyota say about it? Was going to take my truck to the dealership next week to have checked out. Thanks...

Most consumer experts warn against extended warranties, as they are typically high-markup profit pigs for dealers.

However! If you're someone who honestly lives paycheck to paycheck, and you have a hard time saving money, one MAY make sense, but read CAREFULLY before you sign. Pay special attention to what's required for recordkeeping, maintenance, deductibles, etc...

Personally, I pass, but I also carry $1,000 insurance deductibles.

I bought the 7 year-100,000 mile bumper to bumper no out of pocket with standard rental car for $900 when I bought my 05 Tacoma.Seems like a no brainer.I kept my last truck 13 years and that warranty more than paid for itself.Four wheel drive always has something expensive go wrong and the peace of mind is worth it.
  • ronc2ronc2 Member Posts: 8
Are you refering to my problem I posted in toyota problems? Mine is wiggling around and sounds like an old door creaking. It is so strong that you can feel it. I have seen a few responses to my post on other forums. Some have you taking it apart and greasing the springs and bushing. Another has you spraying dry lube on the hydraulic shaft. I sprayed dry lub on the shaft and it appears to have went away. I am going to try it out on Sunday since I will be doing a lot of stop and go driving and will let you know. Toyota is confused (Checkerd Flag Toyota in VA) and want me to bring it in to document the issue.

I purchased my 05 Tacoma in Feb this yr. The dealer tried to sell me a paint protector; however, it was so costly I backed out! I am sure it is good stuff.

"I purchased my 05 Tacoma in Feb this yr. The dealer tried to sell me a paint protector; however, it was so costly I backed out! I am sure it is good stuff."

Maybe, maybe not. There's "paint protector film", which is similar to the stuff stuck to your truck's rear fenders, then there's "paint protector".

Plain ol' paint protector is a dealer scam (like undercoating) that involves nothing more than a good wax job. The film is a high quality peel and stick product applied by a body shop, that can be removed and replaced if necessary. The film works GREAT as a chip protectant, which is why the factory uses it on the fender. I wouldn't doubt if a dealership would attempt to apply a fat markup to the film as well. Keep in mind that any auto body shop can apply the film. If you're interested, ask some local paint and body shops.

Paint and fabric protectants, extended warranties, window etching, gap insurances, and the other things that are sold in the F&I person's office are often very bad deals at face value. The customer is often off his guard here, because he thinks the negotiation is over. These products often have ultra high commissions and markups, so if you really think you need one of these products, NEGOTIATE!

My dealer waxed the truck as part of the $200 prep, never pushed extended warranties, undercoating, "Auto Armor", or anything else. They did automatically try to charge me for window etching, which I crossed out on the contract. They etched the windows anyway. ;)

Does anyone know if it would be possible to change swap out a hood on a Tacoma before or after the sale? The TRD sport edition in my opinion looks better than the TRD offroad edition as far as the body paint scheme being the same color for the entire vehicle. However, if I didn't want the hood scoop, could I purchase a standard hood to match the paint scheme of the truck? Maybe, for 2006, Toyota will offer this as an option, a TRD sport w/o the hood scoop.

I've had my '05 Tacoma for about 8 Weeks. After the 2nd week, the vertical plastic piece that holds onto the rear sliding window latch, allowing the window to lock, fell off. Today, the acutal latch on the slider window followed with ease. The dealer wants to hire a glass installer to cut the gasket and replace the entire rear window. I'd hate to break the factory gasket/seal on the rear window just to replace the latch assembly. It sounds a bit heavy handed rather than just using a bit of better glue. Especially since there's no guarantee against the same thing happening again. Could this be a fluke or is Toyota using a poor adhesive for the latch assembly? Has this happened to anyone else or perhaps a factory bulletin has been released? Considering blowing off the dealer/warrenty and going with Liquid Nails or something on my own. Thoughts?

I bought it at Wilde Toyota in Milwaukee, Wi.Haggled with the finance guy for a few minutes.Didn't get the results I wanted and said screw it,then he said $900 so I took it.Seemed good to me.All you can do is try.Good luck.
  • wooddorkerwooddorker Member Posts: 300
Glass guys do this stuff every day. If it were mine, I'd let them replace it. Most rear pickup windows are just popped in with a gasket, just like at the factory. It's a no-brainer.

I don't know if it's a fluke, but I've never seen your problem here or on Usenet.

Does the 2005 tacoma JBL audio system with the 6 cd changer look like the stock stereo. I have not found a truck that has one and I could not find a picture of the system either.
  • amsgeorgiaamsgeorgia Member Posts: 3
The JBL looks a lot like the stock stereo, but it has a couple extra retangular buttons on either side of the station preset buttons. If you check out the pictures of my truck here, I have a closeup of the dash and you can see the extra buttons (the left rectangular button is labeled TRAF):

    http://photos.yahoo.com/amsgeorgia7

There's also a small square JBL label above and to the right of the CD input slot, and the speakers have the same little JBL tag on them.

I think the JBL stereo sounds great.
  • blutacoblutaco Member Posts: 3
In principle, the dealer should do it, but since I'm not convinced the adhesive has changed, I'd almost rather save the time and effort and just glue the thing on myself and move on with my life.

Thanks for the tip pb2themax. I found the thread in Tacoma Problems forum, #1204. I was doing searches only in this forum.

I am looking to purchase the TRD seat covers. The mesh seats are great, but since I work out of my trcuk and spend many lunches in the driver's seat, the crumbs get stuck in the mesh holes. Does any have these on their trcuk and have pictures? How do they fit? Is the material going to be too hot in the summer? THANKS

:shades: I have the TRD seat covers they are gray on the outside and black in the middle, I like them well. if you go through www.1sttoyotapart.com and call their 1800 number and talk to roger (tell them you are internet so you get those prices) you can get all of the extras from toyota you want at a very good price. 143.00 for you cover plus 10% for shipping, 283 for the tubes, 19.80 for the emergency kit, just a few of the things I bought. PS another sight to try is www.metrotpn.com .

I finally ordered my truck today. I got $300 over invoice which I think is a good deal. Two other dealers in my area wanted close, if not exactly, the MSRP. They told me no deals on a custom order. I am getting:

    4 x 2, SB, DC, Impulse Red
    Off Road # 2
    18" BBS
    JBL
    Side airbags
    Colored running boards
    Homelink

Can't wait to get it but I'm sure it won't be before the end of Aug.

    gxb159,

I have the TRD seat covers you are talking about. They look great and I do like the material. I haven't noticed them getting too hot in the sun. They are kind of a pain to put on though. Once you get them on they look like they came with the seat and the TRD logo on the top really sets them off.

This information came from earlier postings on this forum.

Toyota Greenfield, MA sells the 7/yr 100,000 mile zero deductable warranty for $875.

I called up and verified this (talk to Troy) - wanted the details on hand so the dealer couldn't try and pull a scam. Since it can be purchased any time before the 3 yr/ 36,000 mile warranty expires I'm not in a rush to buy.

If you've already purchased one, I believe if its been less than 30 days you can get a full refund and repurchase from a dealer who is more affordable. I know people on this forum have posted doing this - try a forum search to get more data.

I got the TRD seat covers. I love them. The seats lose a little comfort, but well worth the trade off of the protection they give the seats. Don’t get too hot in the sun, they look outstanding, pain in @ss to install – I cut the tubes, but other than that, couldn’t be happier.

My (small) dog threw up in my truck. He got the door and corner of the seat. I was able to clean it up within10 minutes (I had rags and water in my truck to get the relatively small amount of vomit all out). I immediately took off the seat cover and was thrilled to find the seat dry. Thoroughly cleaned the cover when I got home. Let it dry overnight, slapped it back on the next day, truck’s like it never happened! No smell, no stains. Seat covers a must in my opinion…

Other items I got: Flowmaster (Love it), shift knob and pedal covers (OBX I think-whatever Toyota is slinging, but I don’t recommend), Viper Alarm System (local Circuit City install - very happy with it), and 6.5 Kicker component speakers (front and back, sounds much better, needs an amp though).

Future upgrades, amp, sub(maybe, depend on performance after amp, maybe a 8”), bug deflector (still not sure), window/shade guards (also unsure about), door edge protector(still researching, looking for pictures), and K&N Intake or Amsoil air filter.

Have had my truck (Silver Access Cab, V6, 6-speed, TRD-Offroad) for almost two months now, almost 6k, changed oil at 4.5K. No problems, no rust. Planning on switching to synthetic (Mobil) at next oil change. Really couldn’t be happier!!!
