I'm actually pretty impressed at the construction of the Toyota filter. It's nicely made, all metal, includes the necessary anti-drainback valve, and comes sealed, with the gasket pre-greased. All at an extremely reasonable price! Much nicer than $9 Fram versions I looked at in the store. For my Jeep, I usually use Purolator, Napa Gold, or Wix filters, as I'm not impressed with Chrysler OEM filters.
I used a 20oz. Coke bottle to catch the draining from the oil filter drip ring.
This is the second easiest oil & filter change vehicle I've ever done, running behind my '85 Toyota 4 cyl 22R, where you could just reach in and grab the filter. The '05 only runs second as the drain plug is just a tad harder to reach. Overall, both are brilliant designs when compared to my '95 King Cab!
The manual says the V6 holds 5.5 quarts. I guess that includes the oil held in the filter after starting the engine. :confuse:
Not in the true sense. I poured oil into the filter to soak the element, so some oil was in the filter, but it was not prefilled. You couldn't completely prefill the 22R's either, as it mounted to the side, as is my Jeep 4.0L's oil filter. My 22R went 300k+, never using a drop between changes.
If you really wanted to fill the filter, I suppose you could crank it with the door (gray non-immobilizer) key before actually starting the engine with the correct key.
"The manual says the V6 holds 5.5 quarts. I guess that includes the oil held in the filter after starting the engine."
That's my experience. 5 qts. brought it to just below full. After starting, checking for leaks, shutting down, and waiting a few minutes, the extra 1/2 qt. brought it right to the full dot.
But I think that even when the oil filter is right side up and you fill it with oil,
I do not think it will make a difference cus, the galleries are empty ok, the oil gets picked up by the pump in the sump and it will push the oil up thru the galleries then the oil will finally get to the filter where it push the oil inside, and so on.
So I think that putting oil in the filter just do not matter. even if the pump push the oil and the oil push the air in the galleries you will have a laps of time with lil oil.

I really don't like the "brackets" idea of the toyota part. Some people have said its wobbly and the brackets might scratch the paint, which defeats its purpose all together.
Does anyone make a solid piece shield, that screws under the hood? I've seen some people mention Lund and Auto Focus.
Any input would be appeciated before I buy one.
Do you sell it? :surprise: If you do, you should mention that.
My three vehicles typically get about 4k miles between 6 month changes. I have yet to see the wisdom of spending even more money over Mobil 1 when I'm actually pulling it out early as it is. My 22R went 300k on dino oil changed every 3k miles.
I'd love to see an objective lab test between the Amsoil filter and a Toyota OEM model, but I doubt I ever will. Amsoil seems like good stuff, but I can't get by the number of markups it gets before it arrives at the buyer.
No, I don't sell it.
Stick with your fossil oil. It's sad to hear people that are afraid of new technology. I hear those new computer things work real well but i'll stick with my typewriter thanks.
I suggest doing some research before you open your mouth.
Ugh!!! That is my truck!!! You [non-permissible content removed]!
This is the only time I'll ever envy someone who lives in Denver. Go with the black dude... don't let your wife convince you to go silver. Not that you would care, but there are silver Tacos all over Southern Cal. It's like a clone army. I'd rather continue driving my 95 Ford Taurus than drive a silver taco in Southern Cal.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to work through Reno because I have relatives who live in Tahoe, which is near Reno. I wanna be able to buy my truck, drive a little ways and crash for free before driving home. We'll see though. I might get desperate soon and look to Carson anyway.
Update:
I checked toyota.com again yesturday and guess what? I could select my truck in black! I checked it again today and I couldn't. The web site is updated daily! It's a completely unreliable mess!
I called my local dealer yesturday and told him the story. He said he saw my truck on the computer going to a dealership in a nearby city, but he wasn't sure whether that one was special ordered and already reserved. He's trying to get it for me today.
Bottom line is, I guess there truly is no way to really know where or if your particular truck is going to be made in your area. This situation is driving me crazy. I just want my truck.
I'm not. I use Mobil 1. :P
The film can be run under the hood protector to protect the hood where the hardware is, or even replace the protector all together, along the front edge of the hood. Just protecting the guard's hardware, you may be able to get by with scraps, which may even be free.
I think 3M, Dupont, and PPG make versions of the stuff.

We went and looked at them early this morning. Carrie liked yours best, so that's what she got, Black Sand Pearl/Graphite, Access Cab, 6 spd, TRD Off-Road #2.
She's ecstatic, I'm worn out from the haggle. There were so many screw ups it took all day to get the deal done.
But the irony about your truck is this, it arrived here as part of a swap after first being allocated to a different dealership. And they told me it was a special order not picked up, I kid you not.
BTW, it was the wife who wanted black. I wanted the silver. She won.
Hope this helps.

Check with Marina Del Rey Toyota, when I bought my *gasp* silver Taco, they had black ones on the lot. Culver City Toyota is also good sized, but I don't know what they have in stock. If they have it though, you might get your dealer to make atrade!
Good luck.

However! If you're someone who honestly lives paycheck to paycheck, and you have a hard time saving money, one MAY make sense, but read CAREFULLY before you sign. Pay special attention to what's required for recordkeeping, maintenance, deductibles, etc...
Personally, I pass, but I also carry $1,000 insurance deductibles.

Maybe, maybe not. There's "paint protector film", which is similar to the stuff stuck to your truck's rear fenders, then there's "paint protector".
Plain ol' paint protector is a dealer scam (like undercoating) that involves nothing more than a good wax job. The film is a high quality peel and stick product applied by a body shop, that can be removed and replaced if necessary. The film works GREAT as a chip protectant, which is why the factory uses it on the fender. I wouldn't doubt if a dealership would attempt to apply a fat markup to the film as well. Keep in mind that any auto body shop can apply the film. If you're interested, ask some local paint and body shops.
Paint and fabric protectants, extended warranties, window etching, gap insurances, and the other things that are sold in the F&I person's office are often very bad deals at face value. The customer is often off his guard here, because he thinks the negotiation is over. These products often have ultra high commissions and markups, so if you really think you need one of these products, NEGOTIATE!
My dealer waxed the truck as part of the $200 prep, never pushed extended warranties, undercoating, "Auto Armor", or anything else. They did automatically try to charge me for window etching, which I crossed out on the contract. They etched the windows anyway.
I don't know if it's a fluke, but I've never seen your problem here or on Usenet.

There's also a small square JBL label above and to the right of the CD input slot, and the speakers have the same little JBL tag on them.
I think the JBL stereo sounds great.
Thanks for the tip pb2themax. I found the thread in Tacoma Problems forum, #1204. I was doing searches only in this forum.

Can't wait to get it but I'm sure it won't be before the end of Aug.
I have the TRD seat covers you are talking about. They look great and I do like the material. I haven't noticed them getting too hot in the sun. They are kind of a pain to put on though. Once you get them on they look like they came with the seat and the TRD logo on the top really sets them off.
Toyota Greenfield, MA sells the 7/yr 100,000 mile zero deductable warranty for $875.
I called up and verified this (talk to Troy) - wanted the details on hand so the dealer couldn't try and pull a scam. Since it can be purchased any time before the 3 yr/ 36,000 mile warranty expires I'm not in a rush to buy.
If you've already purchased one, I believe if its been less than 30 days you can get a full refund and repurchase from a dealer who is more affordable. I know people on this forum have posted doing this - try a forum search to get more data.
My (small) dog threw up in my truck. He got the door and corner of the seat. I was able to clean it up within10 minutes (I had rags and water in my truck to get the relatively small amount of vomit all out). I immediately took off the seat cover and was thrilled to find the seat dry. Thoroughly cleaned the cover when I got home. Let it dry overnight, slapped it back on the next day, truck’s like it never happened! No smell, no stains. Seat covers a must in my opinion
Other items I got: Flowmaster (Love it), shift knob and pedal covers (OBX I think-whatever Toyota is slinging, but I don’t recommend), Viper Alarm System (local Circuit City install - very happy with it), and 6.5 Kicker component speakers (front and back, sounds much better, needs an amp though).
Future upgrades, amp, sub(maybe, depend on performance after amp, maybe a 8”), bug deflector (still not sure), window/shade guards (also unsure about), door edge protector(still researching, looking for pictures), and K&N Intake or Amsoil air filter.
Have had my truck (Silver Access Cab, V6, 6-speed, TRD-Offroad) for almost two months now, almost 6k, changed oil at 4.5K. No problems, no rust. Planning on switching to synthetic (Mobil) at next oil change. Really couldn’t be happier!!!
