get this... I posted earlier @ my 05 dcab making the metalic click over slow mph bumps--and even when breaking/accelerating( among other issues). I finally got a tech at the dealership to believe me on this one. they spent 2 days on it (took everything apart 5 times) but unbelievably FIXED the problem. They removed the front bumper and bumper frame and found noise coming from the frame rail ends. "Both holes not aligned causing clicking noise." They realigned the "front bumper support bracket" and "install to frame align cross section and torque all bolts." When the truck's body flexed it would click. This is not typical brand new pickup noise. There is no tech bulletin on this yet. but they filed reports. My bigger problem tho, continues to be intermittant difficult starting. Yeeha. :confuse:

I bought a 05 taco Access Cab TRD off-road in november. Just got back from the dealer from an oil change and when I was there, told them that I was hearing squeaks from the rear end when going over rough roads. They checked it out and told me that both rear leaf springs were weakened and that they will replace them both. they also were showing signs of rust - so all together, they will spending $570.00 CDN for each. Unreal, I used to have a 99 Taco with no problems! Hopeully , this will be the end of it. Anybody else with squeaks - be warned.

Now why are you going to purchase the cheapest thing on the market for your 05 Tacoma? I suggest that you go with Piaa Bulbs. I've installed a matching set for my headlights and foglights and boy are they wonderful. They are by far one of the best lighting out there for your money. Don't waste $30-$45 on cheap lighting that you have to replace every two years. My Piaa's on my old car lasted over 6 years for only $65.

Just if you are wondering which one's would fit, Get the Piaa Super Plasma GT-X H4's for the headlights and the Piaa Super Plasma GT-X HB for your Fog lights, just switch out the sealant ring.

    Hope this helps.

This is exactly what I was saying (see earlier "Metal clanking sound..." thread). There is a big gap between the rear leaf springs. When going over rough road or hump/bump, the bounce makes the leaves banging on each other. Where the leaves touch, they leave rust spots. New leaf springs won't end it because they will bang on each other again. It's true that it does exist on every 05 Taco - the dealer tested on brand new trucks too.

I've raised the concern that over time, it will weaken the leaf springs. Mine is only 3K miles and the rust spots are already distinctive.

New owner of 2005 Tacoma double cab. I want to purchase a bed extender but I am wondering how involved the install process is. Has anyone done this themselves?

Has anyone replaced or checked into replaceing the painted Grill Suround with a Chrome Grill Surround on the TRD Sport Model? If so where did you buy it and how much?
  • deepred300deepred300 Member Posts: 15
It is a device that plugs into the back of the six disc changer (or other radio) and normal stereo output jacks. I also bought an adapter plug that transitions from the two red / white jacks to a headphone jack that I plug into my Dell DJ. Cost about $90 for both including shipping.

Haha... My truck finally arrived last weekend, about a 2 month wait It is a mid level (I couldn't justify the cost of the TRD) indigo ink Canadian 4x4 Access Cab. Check out the pictures here: http://www.lyneartech.ca/gallery/toyota

    A few things I noticed:
-Looks like there is some kind of laminate in front of the rear tires. Is this Toyota's solution to the rock chipping problems?
-My clutch pedal wiggles from side to side when it is a few centimeters depressed. I'm going to have Toyota look at it tomorrow.
-There is a clunking sound when I press the clutch in really fast from first gear. This is probably normal for a truck …I haven’t driven one in a while. Anyone have any tips on shifting smoothly?
-It took me a little while to figure out how to shift the truck into 4 low (works best on a loose surface): Once stopped with the clutch in, twist the selector knob into 4 low. If the 4 low light flashes and there is a beeping sound, drive the truck forward a few feet and backward a few feet. Then cycle the selector knob to 4 high and back to 4 low. The beeping should stop and the 4LO light should remain on. Anyone else have any tips?
-When I jump up and down on the rear bumper really hard I can make a clunking sound, probably the leaf springs though it’s not bothering me as it takes a lot of force and doesn’t happen during my normal driving conditions.

I noticed the picture of your steering wheel...it seems to have some glue like substance on part of it(center airbag/horn area)...as though something was stuck on there (perhaps protective plastic) have you tried to clean it off and if you have did you succeed? I have same thing but can't get it off. By the way your' truck looks great!
  • ush00zush00z Member Posts: 30
A rubber solution won't be able to withstand the pounding force that is equal to the weight of the vehicle. The best solution, I think, is to clamp the 2 leaves together, just like the top 2 leaves.
  • indigo_inkindigo_ink Member Posts: 23
I don't think it is glue but there are marks on the steering wheel. My guess is that the marks are from the machine used to press the final air bag cover in place. Maybe this is done after transport so it is not up to the standards of the factory. All guesses. I'm hoping to buff the marks out with some interior car cleaner. I'd like to know if you manage to clean your steering wheel.

i finally got some pictures of the westin chromed tube steps and bull bar for a double cab shortbed. sorry it took me so long. the only way i could think of posting them was to create an album on sony's website and give everyone the username and password so they could go see it. the username is 2005tacoma, and the password is 2005. here is a link to the album: http://www.imagestation.com/album/index.html?id=2126649129
hope this helps everyone who was considering adding this to their truck. i think both parts look great. if you have any other questions let me know
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
Thanks for the pics. Looks nice!

I ordered about the same thing, except I got everything in Black powdercoat to match my truck, and I got the new oval tube steps. I have to go to Fedex today to pick up the packages. Can't wait!

I'm going to order some PIAA 525's to mount on the Bull Bar. ;)

I wanted to be able to turn my fog lights on anytime that the ignition is on, so that you don't have to have any marker or headlights on. And you can still turn them on and off with the stock switch in the dash. So if you leave the button ON the fog lights will come on whenever the truck is on, just like daytime running lights. And they will shut off automatically whenever you turn the ignition off. To do it I just pulled the fog light relay out and bent the top-right terminal over, so I could fit a female spade connector to it. This is the connection that tells the relay to turn on. You can use a small wire because very low current is required. I pulled the ignition fuse and soldered a small 26 guage wire to the inside edge of the fuse blade. I pushed the spade connector onto the relay terminal and then stuck the fuse back in. Works like a charm!

Yep, I have the same squeak/groan/moan with my clutch pedal. I tried to spray some light oil on the pivot bushings but no luck. It's quite bothersome :(

Here is a response from Scosche, a maker of dash kits for aftermarket stereos, when I asked about the timeline for such a kit for the 2005 Tacoma:

"Unfortunately the kit isn't out just yet, its done just not ready to be released to the public. And I am in the same situation, I also have a Tacoma. But the ETA on the kit could be up to a month."

My DC Prerunner TRD Impulse Red Taco arrived this past Friday. Took about three months. I'm sure part of the long wait is because of my small town dealer/ low volume, probably low allocation from the factory. This is the perfect truck for me. Just the right size for the things I haul, including the family. Also fits in the garage nicely. Ride is smooth and quite as far as I'm concerned. It could be my imagination but it appears to be quieter (less wind noise) than the couple that I test drove last fall/winter. I'll keep an eye on the mpg and post it on occasion.

Thanks for the pictures. I think it is indicative of things that of all the photos, the one of your girlfriend was viewed twice as often as the others!

With our weak dollar, could Canadians now realistically come to the states now to buy cars and bring them back home? Or, are there too many hassles?

After dealing with many dealers in person and online, I finally made up my mind to go through with purchasing this vehicle. The one I'm looking at will have to be located and could take 2-3 weeks or possibly longer for delivery. I used the internet email approach to settle at a good price, or so I think.

    Silver Streak Mica 2005 DC, V6 Automatic, 4x4 TRD-Offroad w/ tow.

    Original price: $29,589
    Sale price: $26,500

I'm curious to see how long it will actually take to find this specific model in the SE region. I'll post on any updates I receive from the dealership.

My 2003 Tacoma extended cab with 8300 miles was totalled last week. Amazing that I was not injured. Even more amazing is that my insurance company is paying me what I paid for the truck in Sept. '03! Talk about value. Even though lightning is not supposed to strike twice, I have 3 kids and am trying to get the double cab with side curtain airbags. It is pretty pathetic that Toyota is not shipping any to the northeast. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Also I am more concerned about ride quality and driving in snowy conditions as opposed to off roading, would i better off with SR5 and VSC/ltd slip vs. TRD Off Road. Thanks
  • hobohobo Member Posts: 27
I live in Boston and I also had a hard time finding a double cab with side air bags. But I just told the dealer to order me one with it -- if you're willing to wait I think you can get it. My order took almost 3 months (ordered in Nov, arrived in late Jan).

Are those the Platinum or Signature series tube steps. And what did you pay for them? Thanks
  • soundman34soundman34 Member Posts: 36
I have that exact same truck. You are going to love it!
  • soundman34soundman34 Member Posts: 36
It does use the rail for mounting, two clamps on either side. You can still use the rail system in between the clamps for the cover. I had them put one clamp all the way in the back and one all the way in the front of the rail. That left plenty of space to use the rest of the rail. There are no leaks and it fits very good. Hope that helps.

The dealer near me has 3 or the exact same truck sitting on thier lot. Maybe your dealer could do a trade for one... It is Younger Toyota in MD.
  • imin2mximin2mx Member Posts: 27
Is there a fix or TSB for the popping noise coming from the front of the truck. The noise is heard when going over pot holes and depressions in the road, not when going over bumps. I've read some discussions regarding this but don't know if there is a published fix. BTW, the build date nov 04.

The Toyota boards are cheaper than other units and fit in factory-installed
mounting holes. They should protect the paint okay but aren't real good
as a step. They are mounted too high, almost at floor level.
My SnugTop canopy has a major leak around the third light. The gasket
that they use is way too thin. Now, I'll have to apply silicone around it to
get a good seal. I thought SnugTop was the Cadillac of tops, but now
    I'm not so sure.
  • iwanna05tacoiwanna05taco Member Posts: 11
they are the platinum series. i paid $395 (shipping included in price) for the tube steps, and i bought the bull bar on ebay for $320 + $35 for shipping.

I'm guessing you have a connector that didn't properly reseat or you bent a pin by no reinserting a connector properly. Always test the work before you close up the dash! Open it up, check for bent pins / seating, TEST IT, and close it back up.

Did you follow the PIE instructions of removing the battery cable before connecting things? If not, you may have blown a fuse. Car radios have power to them even when the key is off. Check your radio fuses.

    Have fun!
  • deepred300deepred300 Member Posts: 15
I did not disconnect the battery. But all three fuses were still good. And the harness still had 12V power. The dealer took a look and ordered a new radio. Should be in on Friday.

None of the pins were bent.

Not really sure what went wrong. Hopefully it will all work out.

"Not really sure what went wrong. Hopefully it will all work out. "

Will we be disconnecting the battery this time? :(
  • ush00zush00z Member Posts: 30
I don't think there is any TSB. I've heard different opinions and fixes. I brought mine to the dealer last week and they said it's cause by the rubber boots under the hood. They tested it and swore that it was gone. I haven't tested it because it only seems to be more easily produced on cold days.

">I have a new Dcab TRD off road w tow, great truck, only noise is a small noise on the drives side by my head were the seat belt goes into the adjustable slide. I only hear it on bumps, not a bad noise but it is in my ear. Any ideals, I will be calling the dealer but would like some input if someone else has had this problem.
  • cmitchellcmitchell Member Posts: 18
I had the same noise. They took off the panel of the door and found some of the bolts had not been tightned enough. Problem solved!

I just heard that there is a recall going on from Toyota involving vehicles that have problems with their front suspension. Affected models include 2001-2004 Tacoma, 2001-2002 4-Runner, 2002-2004 Tundra and 2002-2004 Sequoia. Didn't hear anything about the new Tacos.

Does anyone know of a site where these recall notices are posted? I searched Toyota's websites but found none. Further Googling might do.

KC would you know if Edmunds has compiled one? Thanks!
  • pb2themaxpb2themax Member Posts: 471
I also got my Bull Bar and Steps off of Ebay, but I e-mailed the seller directly and got a better deal buying it "under the Ebay table". ;) I got a way better deal than any parts website or magazine. I love Ebay.

I really like the black Bull Bar on my black Tacoma. I posted pics in the "Tacoma Pictures" forum.

Hi there folks. I've been reading here for a couple of months but this is my first post. I have a silver 6 speed 4x4 4dr on order, with side curtain airbags (I've got 2 little ones) and a JBL stereo....but ran into a problem. The dealer screwed up on the stereo and ordered the $200 6-cd changer stereo instead.

My options are to 1) take this one and upgrade the stereo myself or 2) wait for the next allocation and hope they get it right this time.

I'm not interested in volume just sound quality. If I take the $300 difference and spend it on speakers won't I get what I'm after?

Anyone out there who can advise on the quality of the $200 upgrade stereo speakers?

Almost every announced recall can be found at the NHTSA:
    http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallsearch.cfm
and do a search by vehicle.

I found a great deal on the Toyota Tube steps on this website. I then brought the price to my dealer and the reluctantly matched it. The steps look great and match the silver color on my Tacoma perftectly.

Has anybody mounted a bed extender themselves? I never got a reply on my earlier post
  • aztechianaztechian Member Posts: 31
    dyoung19,

That's interesting about the tube steps. I had a dealer quote me that exact price for the DC tube steps. He was pretty willing to give a deal on anything that day. I wonder if that is the "magic price" or something.

As for the bed extender, I haven't actually seen one, but I'm pretty sure the '05s mount to the bed rails - so it should be about as easy as mounting the tie-downs.

Thanks for the info. Once someone hears any info about the 2006 Tacoma, pricing any changes, new features, fixes etc. please post them. I've pretty much decided to wait for the 06 now.

    Thanks,
