Got mine the other day, 05, DC 4x4 short bed, FE, OG, CF, DZ options so its a TRD Off-Road, 6-Disc CD, and floor mats. Got it for $26,555 wich included the $77 dealer fee and floor mats (CF). Not including the good ol tax and title of course.

    dealer msrp was $29, 3XX

The other quote I got was for $27,500 so I would fight them more.

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I think it's a pretty useful and CHEAP mod.

This mod allows the fog lights to illuminate with the parking lights, low beam headlights, or high beam headlights. How the 05 Tacoma works now, the fog lights are only on when your low beams are on. They won't come on if you have just the marker lights on or if you have the high beams on. This mod lets you change that. You can have the fog lights on whenever you want.

First, identify the fog light relay in the fuse/relay box under the hood, next to the battery. Gently remove it. The male terminal closest to the engine and the firewall is the one that needs to be bent. Gently bend it outwards, so it will be sticking out when you plug the relay back in. This is the terminal that would normally receive 12 V+ from the low beam headlights. Then attach a female spade connector to a piece of light gauge wire(18-22 will do, not much current here). Plug the spade connector into the terminal that you just bent over, and reinstall the relay. Connect the wire that you just attached to the relay and splice it into the parking light, 12 V+ wire(green wire) Caution: Don’t get the turn signal or headlight wire, the parking lights are the outboard lights. Tape up & secure your connections and voila!, fog lights on with the parking lights, low beam headlights, or high beam headlights. You can still turn the fogs on/off with the fog light switch on lower left instrument panel.

    Enjoy :shades:

i called airaid a few days ago and from what the rep told me, "manufacturer is not tooled up to manufacture yet, still just considering adding it to product list.". but who knows, i check kn every few weeks too,, but still nothing yet. i am really anxious to get this mod. installed. the power is really noticeable and i like the slight whisle it gives the engine. i had the chip, exhaust, and air done on my 4.0 ranger and i would have to guess hp went up to 225-230 (from stock of 207). but as for the chip, i think i may pass on that unless i hear some feedback here that it really improves performance. i think the 4.0 on the taco is tuned very well and with the variable valves, i dont know if it is needed. the other thing, only had my tacoma up to 100 mph, so i dont know if there is a speed limiter on,,would be worth it just to eliminate that..in case i have to participate in a high speed chase, or getaway.
as for the flowmaster, just in stalled that a bit forward of previous monstrosity and bent pipe out the side in front of the rearwheel with nice chrome tip...noticibly more power, squeels nicely off the line.
    thanks for your reply..good luck.

I really want to buy a 2005 Tacoma. Unfortunately, I need a bed rack to haul my kayaks. Has anyone found a reasonable solution or heard any rumors about a solution to putting a rack on the otherwise wonderful TRUCKS?

I am interested in getting the roll-back bed cover. It seems pretty cool and very good looking. My TACO is black and it comes only in black. They also sell a locking tailgate hatch that fits the TACO. On the web page they state that both are available for the 2005 TACO. Has anyone purchased this? Does it work well? Can you still use the factory tie down rails? Here is the site:
    http://www.rollbaktonneaucover.com/
The price is around $750.00 that seems a pretty fair price. Has anyone tried installing one themselves?
    Thanks

This is the math I use:

    Tire:
(section width in mm) x (aspect ratio as decimal)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------- + rim diameter
    12.7 (1/2-inch in mm)

    example - 265/70R17:
    265 x .70
    --------------- + 17 = 31.60 inches overall height
    12.7

    example - 275/60R20:
    275 x .60
    --------------- + 20 = 33.00 inches
    12.7

    divide the heights:
33.00 / 31.6 = 1.044 --> new tire will be 4.4% larger than the old, and will distort your speedometer by the same value: indicated 65 mph x 1.044 = 67.86 mph actual speed

For all those interested in upgrading your stereo, I hope this experience helps.

Use the past posts to get the details at to the speaker sizes, (6x9 front, 6 1/2 rear) I found that one can save about 60% shopping on ebay. I purchased a pair of boston acoustic pro series for the front and a similar pair for the rear. I installed the speakers myself to save money. The installation was very easy. Aftermarket speakers using the factory amp will sound horrible! I then went to Audio Express to have them install a 5 channel amp and a 8" Rockford Fosgate sub. The overall sounds is awesome. The amp costs around $400 and the sub another $200. The problem was that Audio Express did a horrible installation. There are push pins located on each door that are no longer there. There are alligator clips on trim panels that are all but gone. I went to the Toyota dealer to purchase more. That cost me about $20.
I currently use the 6 disc changer (I do not know if it accepts MP3), steering wheel controls, alpine 5 channel amp and the above mentioned speakers. There is some tuning needed but I am totally happy with the system. I do know this, the stock speakers must go, the amp is totally inadequate, and I recommend doing the install yourself. Good luck to all!

    * Yakima says they're working on it, but they're moving the facilites, so they are behind. Yakima makes many of the bed accessories that are Toyota branded, so I believe them. They do not yet list a roof fit.

    * Thule is slow to answer emails regarding the Xporter (that claims to fit ALL trucks!) I'm still waiting 2 weeks later! Thule already lists a fit for roof racks, which would nicely pair with a Goalpost, if you aren't towing.

I work at a bicycle shop that sells Thule & Yakima, and feel strongly that both will come out with something soon. Both companies, along with others, offer versions of the Thule Goalpost, which will allow boats to be carried in the bed.

I have local truck body guys that'll gladly put a Trac Rac ladder rack on with expanding fasteners through the plastic top rail, into the metal. These are the same types of folks who put box, dump, and garbage truck bodies on big trucks. This is the way they install Trac Racs on utility body trucks. Clamps are already on the market to attach caps (topper / shell, etc...) to the tee track. The corners of the bed are metal, my local fabricators see no technical reason why a rack wouldn't work, unlike the original Colorado / Canyon, which came with a crushable bed.

My 11'6" kayak rides in the bed, with the gate down, with no problems. While I'd like an overhead rack, at least I can use the boat. I run straps from the tip of the boat that's hanging out the back, back to either the tie downs or the tailgate latch loops. Front wall of bed to back edge of lowered tailgate is a few inches shy of 8' on the '05 Taco.

Once ONE company offers a product, I'm sure all of them will. The new Taco is selling very well here in New England, A.K.A. "they can't keep 'em on the lot", so the demand will probably be there to carry boats. It's just new!

Does anyone know who is carrying CAPS and/or tonneaus for the DBL cab LB. I have only found one company that is offering a roll up style tonneau.
    Any suggestions? :confuse:

    Frustration.
I had this in an 03 Tacoma.
The dealer agreed with me that the chips were not an option. The sensible thing to do is tell that dealer that you want it painted. I did. The paint job looked like it was supposed to and I never had any more chip problems. I think you will be happier than if you leave it alone. And those are your only two viable options.

I traded my 03 on an 05 and the new one did not have the problem.

Incidentally, Toyota paid for the paint job and a rental for me while the truck was tied up in the body shop.

I tackled a 20 foot hill today that other trucks drove around. I kept my RPM's up in 4 low due to loose ground + steep.
Climbed it like a billy goat, although I noticed that burning metal smell at the end, what's that? Truck is driving fine since.

That was probably your clutch slipping. I think this is normal though.

I am considering an Access Cab 4WD with TRD Off Road. Color is Desert Sand with manufacturing date of early March (from brake and differential labels). What issues do I need to watch for? Is the cab water still a problem? Paint chipping? Thanks for the help, want to be completely happy with the purchase :D

Hi, thanks for answering a couple of my questions. I was afraid that the cd players didn't read mp3, but there were so much bull out there, I wasn't sure. When I go to the dealer, I'll take a cd w/ mp3 along and try it for myself. I'm not sure if it was this board or another (I've looked at so many), but somewhere someone talked about using an iPod w/ their Tacoma. Wonder if there are other products out there that I could put my mp3s on AND play through the Tacoma (kind of like you said bjw1.)
I too am interested if anyone has heard of any horror stories from recently built Tacomas. Hope they got all the bugs worked out by now, the '06s must be getting ready to come out in the next few months. (Wonder, is it worth waiting for an early '06 or getting a late '05.)

My Radiant Red Access Cab has neither leaks or paint chips.
  • eaglegeagleg Member Posts: 87
I think alot of the Tacoma problems on this site were one truck instances.Mine was built on 2-14-05 in Fremont and I've had no problems at all!No paint chips, no water leaks, no suspension noise, no engine noise, no stereos that don't play MP3's, no wind noise, nothing but an awesome truck. I'm really hoping that all you people who are contemplating buying a Tacoma go and buy one. You won't regret it.

Best I can tell mine was built 2-14-05 also, ser # 51719, wondered how close it was to your serial number????

Anyway, no chips, no leaks, no wind noise, not one thing wrong with it.

Just got my Access Cab TRD 4x4 6-speed two days ago and i love it! No leaks (flood season here, rain hasen't stopped for a week) and no rattle noises, like the one(s) I test drove a few months ago. Yes I had to wait that long...I can't stop driving it, it is not even comparable to my old '93 (same color and configuration, I fear change!). Only, and I mean only bummer is that the 4x4 switch is not lit up for night driving....I know the old shift knob wasn't either, but it was pretty easy to tell where it was.
The dealer tried to screw me with the tires, I turfed the crappy BFGoodrich and put on REVOs. They put on 245/75's instead of the 265/70's and told me they were the same thing. In all the excitment I believed them and drove home 2 hrs away. Long story short I called and gave them [non-permissible content removed] for downgrading the size (and the tire is cheaper too!) and they are replacing them at no cost this week. Car sellers are sketchy, you have to watch your [non-permissible content removed].
Has anybody found a good quality, solid black aluminium nerf bar yet?
    Gotta go drivin'!

So, does the 05 tacoma play mp3 cd's? I can't find a clear and definite answer to the question anywhere. :confuse:
  • bhc357bhc357 Member Posts: 6
The speed limiter on my truck (in Canada) cuts out around 170-ish, which is mighty fast, but FYI.
I am a little unclear on how you did your exhaust, did you take it to a shop and they bent them for you? if so does this cost much more or is better then going with a kit?
Thanks for the feedback on the chip, it sounds like i might pass on that as well.

Just thought I post something regarding the tailgate's strength.

I had seen where some people had mentioned that the tailgate damaged easily. Well I had my Jag's cast iron straight six engine block slip my (poorly) tied line and slid from front to back bashing into the tailgate at a good speed while driving. Scared the heck out of me because it was loud as hell and I figured for sure that it would have torn the heck out of the tailgate. Surprisingly it wasn't touched one bit. That cast iron block is very heavy, but I can't even find a nick out of the composite material. I was surpised as I guess I was a little paranoid from what I read here.

I just tried burning to mp3s to a cd and then playing them in my Tacoma (single cd player with 6 speakers system in the Access Cab). It would not play the 2 songs I burnt unless I have to do something special when I burn the cd, which I highly doubt. Someone correct me if I am wrong about not having to something special when making the cd, please.
  • miniviperminiviper Member Posts: 13
So the in-dash receiver doesn't play mp3 cds, but some of the changers do?!? That seems really strange. Guess I'll have to do what someone else said and bring a mp3 cd with me to the dealership when I go shopping for my tacoma.

Westin makes some Black extruded aluminum steps. They are the newer Oval Tube steps. They come in black or chrome. They are harder to find than the more common Signature or Platinum Series. I'm going to order a pair for my truck this week, along with a black Bull Bar. The Oval tube steps require ordering a separate mounting kit. I like the straight look of the Oval tube steps. They are like a big bar kind of "floating" out there. They don't curve back under the truck at the ends like most tube steps.
  • blackmambablackmamba Member Posts: 31
Were the songs you burnt in MP3 format? If you are not sure you can tell if you are able to burn over 50 songs (regular length) on 1 disc. Is your cd player the factory cd changer? thanks

My friend just picked up a new 4x4 F-150 Lariat CC. His sales person told him that 4x4s hold their value much more than 4x2s. If this is true, does this apply Tacomas and other midsized trucks as well? I'm considering a Prerunner. Living in Southern CA, I might need 4x4 about 5% of the time (skiing, camping etc). It got me thinking and I just wanted to know what others thought about this issue.

Where did you install your sub? with your 6x9 in the front door are they a 2-way or 3-way? with tweeter in the door would you have to buy component speakers for it to work? as well with the back 6.5 what are you running? 2 or 3?
  • jdvailcojdvailco Member Posts: 26
This is a confusing issue. 4x4s resell for more because they cost more to buy. As to whether 4x2s tend to lose a greater percentage of their original value than a 4x4 on an annual basis, i do not have data on that.

vmiman, I mixed 89 gas last weekend and drove it 377 miles 90% highway at speeds of about 35-55 mph. I hit 20.5 mpg. Glad to know it's capable of better gas mileage now but I'm switching back to higher octane gas. The sound of the engine rattling is driving me nuts. Taco lost its zip at the stoplight. It's totally different once you get used to unleashing those 245 ponies out of the gates. :) DC SB 4x4 6SP TRD2 w/ 10K+ miles.

I tried a CD with music files, but it didn't play on the CD changer. But that might have been made before I switched my music files from wav to mp3. I'll burn a new one this week and try again.

I'm looking at two pie products:

    http://store.yahoo.com/logjam/pietoy03aux.html

    http://store.yahoo.com/logjam/pie35rca6mm.html

I called them up and got some good feedback. Plugs into the back of the head unit. Still allows use of the CD changer.

Anyone have any instructions or experience with pulling the head unit? How do you get to it? Easy to pull off. On a previous car, I needed a special tool.

    Thanks,

    John

    Hello guys,
I need a little help with a audio upgrade on my 05 Tacoma Access cab. I do not care much about it being loud or shaking the windows or anything I would just like to fix it so that it would have a better sound to it and maybe just a little more volume so that I can still hear the music while driving with the windows down.
I would like to do this the cheapest and the easiest way possible so I'm open to suggestions. Will just changing the speakers help or do I need to do more?
My truck has the factory CD player but not the 6 disc changer. I do not want to change stereos I just need some better sound.
    Thanks
  • drywallerdrywaller Member Posts: 4
Yes they are Mp3's ,I do have the 6 cd changer from factory,I have 5 regular cds in changer and 1 disc with all burned MP3's,music and some comedy on it also.

hello, well if you are not into alot of sound, but just want upgrade from stock, i would just change the speakers, i did and sound much better, I also put amp to speakers to give the extra kick, i have a stereo from last vehicle, waiting for dash kits later this month to install, my speakers were $100 a pair but even the ones that are like $69-79 are better than stock, well good luck.

Posted this under 'Prices Paid...' thread also, but wanted to tap both audiences.

I walked out on a deal to pay $200 over invoice on an Access Cab 4WD TRD Off-Road. My invoice from Edmunds and KBB did not match their's. The difference was $452, which they marked as "TDA". Has anyone else seen this charge? Have you paid it and is it legitimate or just a way to weasel another $452 out of me?
  • blackmambablackmamba Member Posts: 31
The 8" sub is located behind the rear seat in the compartment. I did not modify the storage compartment for resale issues. The front 8x9 are 3 way speakers with boston scoustic tweeters on the top of the door. The rears are 2 way 6" boston acoustic. I added a pair of tweeters on the top of the rear door to help fill out the sound in the rear seat. Good luck!

I burned several cd's using realplayer that were in .wma format and they work fine. I don't know how mp3 format varies from the media player format...
  • kevinmtbkevinmtb Member Posts: 5
Before I bought my 05 Tacoma, I asked the dealer if the 6 cd changer would play mp3. He didn't know so he checked with Toyota. The answer he got was NO. Since receiving my truck, I tried several mp3 disk and none worked. However, when I burned them to the same format that regular cd's are, it played them. Hope this helps clear things up.

I got similar results with my SR5 Access Cab I4. Also measured via GPS ( 57.3 mph actual @ 60mph indicated). The dealer said they allow a 4% variation for which I have the tech sheet...but, the sheet states that it can be on the LOW side, not high (miles click off slower than actual miles driven, not faster). They fed me manure so I dealt with it the best way I saw fit without the hassle.
The stock tires are too small to begin with (215 70R 15) so, I upgraded the Firestone Destination LE tires to 225 75R15 and now read 60.5 mph GPS @ 60 mph indicated. As calculated when these tires are at the wear markers, it will be 59.5 mph GPS @ 60 indicated. The tires now look right for stock (size-wise) and ride height increased by about 1.5 - 2.0". I think Toyota screwed up on this one royally.
By the way, the stock Destination LE's are a very good tire for stock. See link:

Pictures with instructions. It's VERY easy. Just take your time. I used a putty knife to get the thermostat controls out with. I think the 4 screws are 10mm. :):)

Pop the climate control panel off from the bottom, using a padded (with tape) screwdriver. There are (4) bolts behind the panel. Remove the bolts, and the entire radio panel can be removed.
  • wooddorkerwooddorker Member Posts: 300
Why would you want a speedo to read low? Reread the tech sheet, if necessary, and think about it. I can't believe that Toyota stated what you're posting. The dealer's right.

If a speedometer can't be correct, it should read higher than the actual speed.
  • outbackwboutbackwb Member Posts: 12
You do not want the speedometer to read higher than the actual speed due to it's effect on accelerating the progression of your odometer. When your speedo reaches 60K miles as indicated with a 4.5% error (as in my case), the actual miles driven would be 57.3K (4.5% of 60k miles is 2.7k).
Remember, any deviation affects your mileage warranty, positively or negatively. With my stock tires, my warranty would have expired at 57,300 actual miles. By calculating and installing the correct tire size, the problem is now corrected (4.5% error is now <1%). :)

I have the dbl cab with stock single cd stereo (which bites). I am going with JL separates in front doors (6.5"), JL two-ways in back doors (also 6.5"), and an 8" JL sub behind back seat (driver's side). The fronts and sub will be powerd by JL e4300 amp, backs off stock stereo power for now. Cannot wait for dash kit to come out as the stock head unit is pretty lame.
