I called Toyota to ask about the VSC on a the 4x4 version. They said that it is NOT able to be turned off. While VSC might prove useful in many situations, I can think of some (particularly off-road) where this might get in the way. Anyone have any thoughts?

I removed that rubber drain plug and inserted a gas line that lead down past everything to the oil pan. Works great.

If you're in 4wd, the VSC is disabled anyway. The only way the VSC works is by dethrottling the engine and applying brakes to individual wheels. When the truck is in 4wd, the front/rear drive shafts are turning in tandem, so the VSC cannot work so is turned off. So for off-roading, the VSC is a non-issue. From my experience in the 4Runner which has the Torsen, I still have found that the VSC is MORE effective in most situations than having the center differential locked though.

    Just my observations.

I think the Hood Scoop looks really cool. I also bought the 2005 Tacoma Extended Cab in "White" just like yours. However, I bought the TRD Off-Road package which does NOT include the scoop. I don't know where you live, but I live in Southern California and would love to exchange hoods with you if you have any interest.

I'm in the process of accesorizing my '05 Tacoma, and really like the looks of the Westin bull bar. I'm wondering if it would have a negative affect on the operation of the air bags in the event of a crash though....any thoughts? :confuse:

I have a '05 Auto V6 Access Cab with 16' steel wheels and no steering issue. I did lose 3 hub caps, the first while pulling off the dealer lot when I picked up the new truck. The cause of the caps falling off had to do with the way the delivery apprentice hand banged the caps instead of rubber hammering whilst holding the caps with the free hand. No hub cap problem since.

Double cab 05 short box manual: Same experience with original Goodyear tires. It shimmied at 100 kph as I drove it home. After several rebalancing and alignments at the dealers, the Goodyear shop said the tires were made with a defective tread alignment. Paid extra for a different brand better grade 6 ply replacement set and no problems in 6000km (Wild Country).

I had this problem happen 2x, it had no rymthm or reason. Just wouldnt start on initial start, interesting to see that others have experienced this problem too. I am thinking it might be related to the key chip and computer set up,

Just an F.Y.I. in the directions it shows 2 rectangular holes in the frame. And shows you putting the long track with a bolt connected to it through the first one. It is completely inaccurate. Make sure the first bracket goes all the way forward against the body mount. It is a round hole, not rectangular like shown. Other than that these goes on real easy. Just figured I would let people know.

Just figured I would let people know that in 3 weeks the Stainless steel grille guard from Westin will be available for purchase. It is called the Sportsman series C.P.S.

I was going to post that too. I had the same steps for the access cab. Those pictures were so generic you couldn't tell anything. I thought they sent me the wrong ones until I saw that round hole was there. The first bar took about an hour, I think I mounted those brackets three separate times. Of course, the second bar took less than 15 minutes.

Does any tonno mfgr make a rigid folding cover for the '05 Access Cab? I'm new to truck ownership and would like to get a rigid folder. Fold-A-Cover Co makes ridgid folders but not for the wider 2005 Taco. Anyone out there with a scource?

My first post; have been reading the other posts daily and have learned a lot! I bought a '05 DC 4x4 LB in May and have been trying to find a high top camper shell for the bed with no luck. Has anyone been successful in finding one? I need the utility of a high top, the cab level does not give me the clearance I need.

Has anyone found a protectant to use on the dash? It looks like a matt finish and I think regular Armor-All would be too shiny. I thought there was a non-glossy Armor-All, but haven't been able to locate any. Does anyone know if they still make this? Is there another alternative? It's time to put some kind of protectant on it; I have been using water since I got it in late May and its been over 110 degrees.

I use either Simoniz spray or Klasse interior dressing. Neither of them are too oily but it shines them up nicely. I like the Klasse stuff but it's harder to spread because it a liquid without a spray bottle. I'm sure there are some other things out there, those are the two I have. Armor-All was always too greasy for me.

I will be purchasing a DC 4x4 SB in the next few weeks. I routinely pick up long boards and such for home projects. I am looking for some kind of ladder/overhead rack that attaches to the bed that will allow me to carry long items above the cab. I don't care for the cab mounted roof rack.

I'd also like the rack to be removable since I won't be using it all the time. I like the look of the stock truck.

Maybe there is a manufacturer that will take advantage of the bed mounted rack system.

    Any ideas?

Somewhere pretty close to $4,000. The dealer installed the lift.I had the tires and wheels mounted and balanced and put them on myself.I am still wanting to add a billet grille.( You can get them left solid black by certain mfgs.)

    pretty cool.
Has anyone used Retrax before? If so, how is it? Any other suggestions on a hard cover for the bed?

I have a 05 Tacoma Prerunner DC, less than 2 weeks old and some dip banged against my rear right bumper in my own driveway. No damage to the fender nor paint. The cheap tin metal was pushed in around 3/4 inch or so. You have tell if you compare the right side around the fender to the left side. I checked underneath the truck, no visual damage there. There is one little ping in the chrome bumper, very minor. Poor driver was from out of state and lost on our street. She has insurance etc. I suppose all that needs to be done is to have the right side of the bumper hit back out a little. I hope the charge will not be too much for me, as the driver will be gone soon from her relative's house. Any advise ?

Does anyone know how to disable the DRL. I've seen other '05s on the road and they don't have their DRLs on.
  • miniviperminiviper Member Posts: 13
That's probably cuz they don't have DRLs. It's an option. Besides I thought the point of having DRLs is to keep them on.

Ordered my dash kit from ebay and finally got my Sony radio installed yesterday at Circuit City (installation was free). The guy installing it had a hard time getting it in, but an hour later and everything was done. It Looks and sounds awesome! I highly recommend anyone interested in getting better sound. I had already upgraded the speakers to Infinities (6x9 in the front, 6.5 in the rear), but the new deck makes it worth while. I will send pics to anyone interested. :)

works very good in rain no leaks. As far as security you would need a locking tailgate
  • toyotakentoyotaken Member Posts: 897
I have not personally heard this on any of the Tacomas that I've been in (50 or more). However, from what I've heard, it could be a one of many things. Personally, I'd have a service technician (not service writer, someone who's actually worked on the trucks) to sit in the truck and listen to what you're describing. They would best be able to assist you. Sorry I can't give any better advice, but that is one that I honestly would not have any idea on. I'd rather say I don't know an answer than give you bad advice though.

Hey Steve, Think safer driving AND lowered insurance rates with DRL 'ON'.
  • len888len888 Member Posts: 112
First thing tomorrow morning I'm going to look for the 2x6 indents in the bed of my 2005 Taco Access Cab. If it is what you suggest for loading 4x8 stuff, I'll comment further about engineering those cross members.
  • len888len888 Member Posts: 112
Your neat report sure addresses RIGID 4x8 sheet goods. For FLEX SENSITIVE 4x8 sheet material, I suggest laying two (2) 1"x4"x6' perpendicular to and on top of the 2x6's. Locate the 1x4s approx 12inches from each wheel well. Avoid knoted 1x4 stock.

just curious on the performance and others opinions on the composite bed?

Would the bed become brittle in extreme cold temperatures (-30 and below) or would there be problems in the extreme heat???

To me it sounds far superior than a spray in bed liner, let me know what you guys think!!

RE: just curious on the performance and others opinions on the composite bed?

    Hey Canadian Taco,
To address your question about the composite bed...
I've found the "stock bed" to be too slippery when I put small things in it like a paint cans or skis, etc. Objects slid around when I came to a stops or shifted from side to side while going around corners.
I've invested (about $60 US) in an OEM rubber bed mat about 2 weeks ago and really like it. It adds considerable grip to the bed surface and looks pretty nice too. (it only covers the bed itself - not the gate or sides)
It only weighs about 40lbs and can easily be rolled up like a carpet if you need less friction (like with a bed full of yard mulch or something) -easier to shovel.

There have been a few other posts that also have noticed improvement by adding the mat too.

I've used the track system for securing small items a few times, and have found that to be quite useful too.

Others have talked about putting the cross "spars" in the bed to be able to haul sheets of plywood and the like, but haven't heard follow-ups on how that went... but assume it's very easy solution since there are 4 notches in the composite. (most pick-ups have them I think?)

I get a lot of inquires about the power outlet in the back, but have only used it once for a buddy's radio that needed to be re charged- worked great and saved the day!

As far as extreme ends of the temp spectrum -I haven't owned my truck long enough to add much to that discussion... I know that the composite material is pretty durable or it wouldn't have found itself on the "Truck of the Year!"

Hope that advice is useful to you/your question(s).
    Regards,
    Thistle

I don't know about the extreme cold, but there hasn't been any problems in the extreme heat. I live in Phoenix and it has been 115+ this summer. I was in Las Vegas last month and the truck thermometer read 121 as I was going down the strip. We'll have to see what happens after 5 or 6 summers, but for now, no prob.

    Hi engineerboo,

Did you get the Snuglid SL or the regular Snuglid? I'm looking at the Snugtop website and I can't really tell the difference.

    Thanks,

I just called the dealer to check if the 3"RevTek Lift would void my warranty and they said no as long as they installed it. They are a RevTek distributor. They also told me I would have to change my shock and that the Bilsteins would be $75 each or I could get a cheap $40 shock. The installation of the Lift was $715 including the kit.

Does this sound right to you?

I have read that with the 3"RevTek Lift on the 05 Taco you do not need to change shocks. Are they trying to separate me from my money again?

Has anyone, who has the "auto-locking differential", noticed that it activates during slow turns even if in 2 wheel drive mode? I had the dealer to recalibrate it but it still sounds like the rear ABS kicks in on, especially at slow speeds such as pulling out of a parking space.
  • jkolojkolo Member Posts: 1
I have the opposite problem. When I bought my 05 Tacoma (off assembly line in July) I asked for daytime running lights and was told by the dealer that daytime running lights were no longer an option. You can't get an 05 tacoma with DRL. Was I misinformed? Is there a way to get DRL added now?
  • aztacoaztaco Member Posts: 36
There is a way to turn your fog lights into running lights. See message 3532 & 3654. It takes a little engineering, but doesn't sound too difficult. I have not tried it yet.
  • zaxuszaxus Member Posts: 9
i just leave my head lights on at all times and when you turn off the truck, lights go out too.

Anyone have this Exhaust? If so, how is it comparable to Magnaflow or Flowmaster?

    I saw these on www.trdparts4u.com
