I would always pick a (timing) chain over a belt - the reason some engines use a belt is because it is cheaper to build - runs smoother and also gets a little better MPG. In the fight reach CAFE standards every .25 of a MPG helps. Toyota even uses timing belts in some of its V8 engines (I think they use 2 belts but I am not sure)

does anyone know if there will be any changes on the 2006 Mazda 3 ?
  • tr20tr20 Member Posts: 76
I read that Mazda is owned 33% by Ford. I would like to know if there are any Ford parts on the Mazda 3?

I also read that the Mazda 3s are built in Japan, so that's good to hear.

I found this on another forum...

    New Features for 2006:
The 2006 MAZDA3 is a carry-over model, but there are some exciting new features for 2006 models including the addition of variable valve timing (VVT) to the 2.0L engine, the addition of PZEV (for five states) to the 2.3L engine, and the addition of a 5-Speed Sport AT to the 2.3L engine. All models with air conditioning also contain a pollen filter and ambient (outside) temperature display in the center instrument panel. All 2.3L models add standard ABS and variable-intermittent front wipers. The new 2.3L “s Grand Touring” model (which replaces the successful 05MY Special Edition SP23) contains the SP23 features plus automatic climate control and a driving information system (trip computer) for around the same price as SP23 – a great value on a well-equipped car! There are two new exterior colors for 2.3L models: Copper Red Mica (replaces Lava Orange) and Whitewater Pearl Mica (replaces Rally White).

    Pricing for 2006

The 2006 pricing is based on 2005 models with pricing adjustments for equipment changes. Estimated pricing for major equipment changes includes ABS ($300 MSRP), SAB/SAC ($500 MSRP), 5AT ($950 MSRP), Bose Audio ($400 MSRP), Manual A/C ($880 MSRP), Automatic A/C ($100 MSRP), Driving Information System ($50 MSRP), and Whitewater Pearl Paint ($200 MSRP).

Build Combinations and Model Lineup for 2006

In addition to all these great new features, the really big news for 2006 MAZDA3 is a reduction in factory build combinations from 110 to 50 MSCs which will help all dealers with production ordering and inventory management. Here is a summary of the model lineup and MSC changes:

This MSC reduction is a direct result of dealer feedback regarding the need to streamline the MAZDA3 ordering and inventory process. The majority of the MSC reduction is a result of making previous 2005 model optional equipment (e.g., ABS, SAB/SAC, Xenon, TPMS) standard on certain 2006 models. Also, the Navigation System is now only available as an option on the “s Grand Touring” model, and Bose Audio is added to the Moonroof and 6-CD Changer option package on the “s Grand Touring” model.

    Feature Models for 2006

The 2006 MAZDA3 advertising will continue to feature the well-equipped MAZDA3 4-Door model in Titanium Gray Metallic and the well-equipped MAZDA3 5-Door model in Winning Blue Metallic. The featured price leader model will continue to be the entry-level MAZDA3 i 4-Door with manual transmission, air conditioning, and D&D charge with an estimated “Starting At” price of $15,140 MSRP which is $50 MSRP higher than the 05MY MSRP due to the addition of VVT on the 2.0L engine and pollen filter and outside temperature display on models with air conditioning.

Individual dealer ordering and sales history for 05MY should be used as the basis for 06MY ordering; however, please refer to the 2006 MAZDA3 Spec Decks and consider the following points when placing your orders:

    Ø 2.0L 4-Door “i” model

o The 15” alloy wheel option is no longer available.

o The ABS/SAB/SAC package is now available on entry-level 4-Door models with A/C. Please consider the increasing popularity of this option (over 50% take rate nationally for 05MY) and the expectation that key competitors will offer standard ABS/SAB/SAC for 06MY. The MAZDA3 ABS/SAB/SAC will be competitively priced for 06MY.

    Ø 2.0L 4-Door “i Touring” model

o The core 2.0L 4-Door “i Touring” model replaces the “Power Package with 16” alloys” and both the equipment level and pricing are similar to that of the 2005 model.

o Standard equipment: “i” model plus air conditioning with pollen filter and outside temperature display, power door locks/windows/mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, driver’s seat tilt/height/lumbar, 16” alloy wheels, 205/55VR16 tires, front tweeter (2) speakers.

    Ø 2.3L 4-Door and 5-Door “s” models

o Carry-over 2005 model equipment plus pollen filter, outside temperature display, and variable-intermittent wipers. ABS is now standard equipment on all 2.3L models.

o Options include the all-new 5AT, the very popular Moonroof & 6-CD Changer package, and SAB/SAC package (on 4-Door model).

    Ø 2.3L 4-Door and 5-Door “s Touring” models

o Making key sport and safety equipment standard on the “s Touring” model and simultaneously limiting options results in a significant decrease in build combinations.

o Standard equipment: “s” model plus 17” alloy wheels and side sills (4-Door model) and standard SAB/SAC. Options include 5AT, Moonroof/6-CD package, and Leather Trimmed Seats.

    Ø 2.3L 4-Door and 5-Door “s Grand Touring” models

o Builds on the popularity of the well-equipped and highly popular SP23 (with black leather interior and eight available exterior colors) while reducing build complexity by offering only three options: 5AT, Moonroof/6-CD/Bose Audio package, and Navigation System.

o Standard equipment: “s Touring” plus leather trimmed seats, heated front seats, automatic climate control, driver info system, auto on/off headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Xenon HID headlights, tire pressure monitor system, security system, LED taillights (5-Door).

    thanks for the info.

do you know if the 2006 Mazda 3 GT sedan will come in the colour Winning Blue Mica again?

Are you serious the Mazda3 will be coming in the fall? I just signed the contract for a new 2006 and then realised that I forgot to ask when the cars will be coming in. I guess I will have to wait till Monday to call them back.
Does anyone know for a fact when the dealers will be getting the 2006 models
  • tr20tr20 Member Posts: 76
i don't know exactly when but i'm sure the 2006 MZ3 will be out sometime in the fall, perhaps in late fall.

.......which Mz3 are u getting? what color?

Just purchased a new M3 Sport GT, AT, AC, Moonroof (no leather), titanium gray, block heather.

Payed: 26,100CAD, all taxes included (no PST, as I live in AB). I am not much of a haggler but I tried my best :). From your own experience, is this bad or good, considering the 2006 model is almost here.
  • nifty56nifty56 Member Posts: 279
I have a SEDAN,GFX.AUTO,GT, TITANIUM GREY, no leather, paid $23600 + GST, PST on the road $27,250. Not sure of the pricing on the SPORT. I think I was quoted $27,500 taxes in or about $24,000 before taxes. So maybe you paid about $300 to $500 too much, just a guess. The moonroof comes with the GFX package and the A/C is standard so you would have to pay more for those on the sport. There is a site that others have posted their prices paid.
  • vecktorvecktor Member Posts: 8
I just purchased 2006 SEDAN,GFX.AUTO,GT, WINNING BLUE, no leather, paid 25,800 OTR. Note I live in AB no PST. Should have the M3 in 3 weeks.

    Also includes Rear Spoiler

Nice! What is the financing on the 2006 M3? And did the dealer confirm it, do the 2006s come with a 5 speed automatic as rumored? Where (what dealer) did you buy it from?
  • autonomousautonomous Member Posts: 1,769
... a good but not a great deal; enough to have a smile on your face. :)

Did the dealership offer any free services or throw in any other bonuses?
Many dealerships use these to promote loyalty; you may want to ask
your salesperson, even after the deal, whether you qualify. If not, let her/him
know that you are considering doing business with the competition.

Since this is a year old car, did you press the salesperson regarding its age?
Even before a car leaves the lot, it starts to depreciate.
Assuming 10% as an annual figure for depreciation means the 2005 model
(whether the car is driven or not) would be about 10% cheaper than the 2006 in September when the new models arrive. I use 10% because I keep my cars for a while and average out the depreciation; many cars (especially American
vehicles) tend to depreciate much faster (30% in the first year!). An easy way
    to calculate depreciation is to check your dealership for used versions of your car;
that's where you'll see that the $26K vehicle from three years ago is selling for $16K.
The remedy: go out and enjoy your car now!
  • vecktorvecktor Member Posts: 8
I paid cash so I am not sure what the financing on 2006 M3 is? The dealer was Sundance Mazda (Edmonton). Yes the 2006 has a 5 Speed automatic. :)
  • madtheomadtheo Member Posts: 5
Thanks for the info. It was about 1,300CAD below MSRP and I figured it was ok. I see now that I could have played hardball and maybe get another 500 off. Another thing is that I went with the offer to another two dealers and they said they couldn't beat it. I don't know, maybe the remaining stock was going fast anyway, even without incentives. Also the 2.9% financing on 48 month was ok, as compared to (probably) 4.9% on 2006 models. I plan to keep the car for a long, long time (unless it's a lemon, god forbid), as long as the repair cost make it no longer feasible to keep it, so the fact that it is a 2005 model (manufactured June 2005) vs a 2006 model it doesn't make much difference to me, thou the 5spAT would have been nice :).
In any case, as you put it a good but not great deal. I am happy with it specially since I love how it drives. It really is a very nice car, hope to be also very reliable in the long run.
I didn't get anything else from the dealer, except some floor mats and cargo net. i didn't know I could ask for free servicing. I have been told I would have to pay for oil change and stuff when I come in for servicing. Could I ask for something after I already bought the car? What leverage would I have.
Again, thank you for your reply, and overall this forum is quite helpful and informative.
  • autonomousautonomous Member Posts: 1,769
I didn't get anything else from the dealer, except some floor mats and cargo net.
Actually the floor mats can be pricey (C$100) and the net is likely not cheap either so you can add that to the plus side of your deal and say you got close to C$1500 off. The real bonus is you have a great car in which to store your mats and net!

i didn't know I could ask for free servicing. I have been told I would have to pay for oil change and stuff when I come in for servicing. Could I ask for something after I already bought the car? What leverage would I have.
Yes, you can ask for servicing as part of your negotiation. Some dealers throw in unlimited oil changes so that you visit them regularly; during these visits they can spot problems, recommend additional services and maybe even sell you your next car. The leverage you have is you can direct your business to another Mazda dealership. You may want to call your salesman or the dealer's service area and mention that you heard some dealers have a loyalty program for their clients. If they don't sound thrilled try calling another Mazda dealership and see what they say. My dealer provided a book of coupons which entitle me to a free oil change every third or fourth visit to their shop and is worth a couple of hundred dollars. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
  • madtheomadtheo Member Posts: 5
From what I have been reading it sounds like a good idea to have the rustproofing done. For those living in Edmonton, AB, could you recommend a good shop to have it done? I know about Krown Rust Control. Is there any other with whom you had a good/bad experience?

    Thanks!
  • lakermanlakerman Member Posts: 6
if you slide underneath you should be able to see where the undercoat has been applied, mine had it almost everywhere. you might be able to do the rust control spray yourself for the price, just my two cents.
  • tr20tr20 Member Posts: 76
did u get the 5 speed auto? do u know how much is it?

I haven't seen much Winning Blue Mica on a MZ3 sedan, just wondering does the dealer charge extra for this colour? .............I read on the e-brochure that the Wiining Blue Mica is only available on GT sedan (and of course the Sport) for 2005, is it the same for 2006?

I read also that the 06 sedan has some additional standard features, can u tell me what they are?
  • vecktorvecktor Member Posts: 8
Yes the 2006 automatic is 5 speed. No extract charge for the Winning Blue. I assume that it is still only available on the GT. But don't know for sure. I not 100% sure but I belive there is a filter on the A/C and the light are all LED. The big change I heard was how they package items together. If you go with leather package it will include heat seats. The dealer only verified that the 2006 was going to have 5 speed auto trans. and would have all the features that we agreed on 2005 M3 Sedan GT, Auto GFX deal that went out the window when they could not find in the colors I was looking for (Blue, Black, Grey, light Grey, Silver).

Can't wait only 16 days to go. I get my Toyota Highlander tomorrow so I going to have fun this weekend.
  • tr20tr20 Member Posts: 76
thanks for getting back. i just want to get it clear for the 5 speed auto for the 2006. Some say it's an option, if it is true, if so, how much do they charge extra? Or is it a standard on all trim levels of the 5 speed?

do u know what is the price difference, if any, between the 05 and 06?

I read that the new additional standard features will be pollen filter and outside temperature gauge.

I have seen a Winning Blue Mica GT sedan on the street with tinted windows, it looks nice!

does anyone notice that the wipers leaves streaks on the windshield?
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Yep, they do -- at first. Must be some kind of windshield coating for the trip from Japan or maybe just cheap wipers (but mine are Bosch). Mine did it rather noticeably for the first coupla thousand miles -- but at 7,500 miles now, the windshield does not streak anymore.

Just remember, when you wash your windshield, wash your wiper blades too.

I have no idea if the 5 speed auto is an option or part of the GT package. I was dealing on 2005 when they were unable to deliver they offered 2006 for a little bit more and all they told me was that it did come with 5 speed auto and all of the options that we agreeded on. The dealer said there was $300.00 difference in price between 2005 and 2006. I don't know if this is true on trim levels.

I can't wait to see it with the rear spoiler.
  • autonomousautonomous Member Posts: 1,769

Automatic transmissions are an option on many cars and on average cost approximately $1000 more than a manual transmission. In 2006 the Mazda3 automatic transmission will have 5 speeds; 2005 Mazda3s had automatic transmillions with 4 speeds. The additional speed may make for a (slightly more?) fuel efficient car.
  • tr20tr20 Member Posts: 76
thanks for getting back, i know that on average auto tranny cost $1k more, but my question is does Mazda 3 offer 5 speed auto on ALL their trim levels? or only on the GT?

Just breaking in the engine (2.3L, M3Sport GT). After exclusively city driving for 250 km I did a refill and I got 11.4L/100 (20.4miles/gallon) :surprise: . Same day I went on a 300km trip, only highway driving (conservative, mostly cruising) . I refilled again when I returned and I got 7.4L/100 (31.3miles/gallon). I am happy with the highway mileage, is pretty much as advertised, however the city is quite different, advertised is 9.8L/100 (23.8miles/gallon). How does these numbers compare to your numbers?

Another thing: I refilled with 87octane gasoline (0.989CAD/L from Petro Canada). Any advantages using a higher octane gasoline, or it would be just extra money off the window?
  • tr20tr20 Member Posts: 76
i guess there will be a bigger discrepancy in city driving regarding fuel economy in any car. It's rather difficult to determine how one drives in the city, perhaps one drivers does a lot of stop and go, another is stuck in traffic, etc. In your case, there's a difference of 1.6 litres, which I think is not so bad.

I, myself am looking into buying a compact sedan, and one of my considerations now is a MZ3 GT AUTO sedan with the GFX package. One of my primary factors is gas consumption. As for the MZ3 GT AUTO, like you said, it's 9.8L/100km, on paper. Seeing the gas price now, and the fact that it won't go down anytime soon but up, I really have to think it over.

But u gotta remember, ur ride is a GT and it's an AUTO.
  • autonomousautonomous Member Posts: 1,769
There is lots of information about conserving gas, just google a bit. I've found that keeping track of your mileage like you're doing helps in showing you what works and what does not. For example, it's not surprising that the faster you go, the more gas you burn. Also, when you are stopped at a light, you're going nowhere but your car continues to burn gas. Finally, no suprise that Canadian winters are hard on fuel economy no matter how you drive; expect a significant decrease (about 25%) over summer numbers.

There is a TSB out on the trunk lid

    www.finishlineperformance.com/maz

madtheo - Most experts say use the octane that the owners manual calls for. Octane has nothing to do with giving your engine more power - unless it is designed to use higher octane. There are many people who still think the higher the octane the more power & more power = better MPG. All of the studies I have read say this is just not true.
  • autonomousautonomous Member Posts: 1,769
... many people ... think the higher the octane the more power & more power = better MPG ... this is just not true.
I agree this is just not true.
  • tr20tr20 Member Posts: 76
    what is TSB?
  • z71billz71bill Member Posts: 1,986
TSB = Technical service bulletin - Most (maybe all) car companies issue TSB's as a way to help the dealership service department handle known problems, defects & solutions. Some are very minor - but other can be major issues.

Go to this link and see all the TSB information on the Mazda3

Hey, I bought a mazda3 in july of this year so basically it's only been over a month old. The first week i drove it, i realized that there is a slight leak in the sunroof. Basically, the rain or water from the autowash seeps through the roof an into a ledge. I took it into the dealership to have it looked at. The technicians seemed confused but they told me that the drains were clogged and as a result, the water would seep through the sunroof. I thought that was a lot of nonsense. However, it was my first time taking it there. I realized not long after having it "fixed" that there was still a leak. I decided to take it to another mazda dealership to get a second opinion and again, they said something about the clamps from the drains were not fastened tight enough. I still noticed the leak even after having it looked at for a second time. Last week, i took it into the first dealership to have it repaired. I was VERY ticked off and not impressed with how things are. I took the problem to Mazda Canada and the GM of the dealership. Talking to them did not make me feel better and I think it just got me more frustrated. The GM was of no help. He kept telling me to bring it in to have it looked at. I've been in the dealership on average once a week since buying it. This is unacceptable for a customer to be in there soo often with a new car and Mazda will not replace the roof for me. My expectation is to have the roof fixed or replaced so that I can enjoy the car to its full extent. Everything else is fine with the car; Just the sunroof is really getting me ticked off. I find that the service advisors, the sales person that sold me the car, the GM are useless. If you want to know the dealership I got the car, reply to this post and I'll tell you because I don't know if I am allowed to mention names here. I am suppose to bring the car in tomorrow for a 4th time to have it looked at. It is cutting into my work time and is very inconvenient for me because I need to arrange for rides and so on. Another thing is Mazda is not able to find out what is wrong with the sunroof and I know for a fact that it leaks. I am not lying about this as there is nothing in it for me. I lose money due to the time taken off from work. I really hope that someone here can tell me what to do because I do want to have all this resolved ASAP. One question I keep asking the dealership is "What happens in the winter when water gets through the sunroof and freezes? It's going to break the roof i assume." I ask this question because mazda keeps telling me the ledge INSIDE the car is made for holding water which I find rather unusual. When i take it to the carwash, the water goes through even more noticeably. Auto carwash or selfwash, the same thing happens. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME BECAUSE I AM LOST!
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Yes, the roof has a drain channel inside, under the roof of the car. It was this way all the way back in my 1992 Protege. Most cars with sunroofs are built this way. And you will also notice that your manual states that you should not direct high-pressure streams of water at the seal around your sunroof. (You say "selfwash," and I believe you're talking about one of those wand-type, high-pressure car washes where you wash the car yourself.)

Your sunroof is normal unless water is actually leaking into the passenger compartment when the roof is closed.

does anyone find the trunk space on the MZ3 small? visually it seems smaller than other compact cars, not sure if it can 2 full size luggages? i guess if u do decide to put in a sound system, with subs in the trunk, then it will leave little room for other stuff.

Guess I'll post it here too ... we're not supposed to cross-post, but since you won't expand yo' mind and look at the other Mazda3 discussions ... here ya go ... (scroll down for pricing, which is in U.S. dollars -- but this applies to all of North America).

    New Features for 2006

The 2006 Mazda3 is a carry-over model, but there are some exciting new features for 2006 models including the addition of variable valve timing (VVT) to the 2.0L engine, the addition of PZEV (for five states) to the 2.3L engine, and the addition of a 5-speed Sport AT to the 2.3L engine. All models with air conditioning also contain a pollen filter and ambient (outside) temperature display in the center instrument panel. All 2.3L models add standard ABS and variable-intermittent front wipers. The new 2.3L "s Grand Touring" model (which replaces the successful 05MY Special Edition SP23) contains the SP23 features plus automatic climate control and a driving information system (trip computer) for around the same price as SP23 -- a great value on a well-equipped car!

This MSC reduction is a direct result of dealer feedback regarding the need to streamline the Mazda3 ordering and inventory process. The majority of MSC reduction is a result of making previous 2005 model optional equipment (e.g., ABS, SAB/SAC, Xenon, TPMS) standard on certain 2006 models. Also, the Navigation System is now only available as an option on the "s Grand Touring" model, and Bose Audio is added to the Moonroof and 6-CD changer option package on the "s Grand Touring" model.

    2.0L 4-Door "i" model

The 15" alloy wheel option is no longer available.

The ABS/SAB/SAC package is now available on entry-level 4-door models with A/C. Please consider the increasing popularity of this option (over 50% take rate nationally for 05MY) and the expectation that key competitors will offer standard ABS/SAB/SAC for 06MY. The Mazda3 ABS/SAB/SAC will be competitively priced for 06MY.

    2.0L 4-Door "i Touring" model

The core 2.0L 4-door "i Touring" model replaces the "Power Package with 16" alloys" and both the equipment level and pricing are similar to that of the 2005 model.

Standard equipment: "i" model plus air conditioning with pollen filter and outside temperature display, power door locks/windows/mirrors, cruise control, keyless entry, driver's seat tilt/height/lumbar, 16" alloy wheels, 205/55VR16 tires, front tweeter (2) speakers.

    2.3L 4-door and 5-door "s" models

Carry-over 2005 model equipment plus pollen filter, outside temperature display, and variable-intermittent wipers. ABS is now standard equipment on all 2.3L models.

Options include the all-new 5AT, the very popular Moonroof & 6-CD Changer package, and SAB/SAC package (on 4-door model).

    2.3L 4-Door and 5-Door "s Touring" models

Making key sport and safety equipment standard on the "s Touring" model and simultaneously limiting options results in a significant decrease in build combinations.

Standard equipment: "s" model plus 17" alloy wheels and side sills (4-Door model) and standard SAB/SAC. Options include 5AT, Moonroof/6-CD package, and Leather Trimmed Seats.

    2.3L 4-Door and 5-Door "s Grand Touring" models

Builds on the popularity of the well-equipped and highly popular SP23 (with black leather interior and eight available exterior colors) while reducing built complexity by offering only three options: 5AT, Moonroof/6-CD/Bose Audio package, and Navigation System.

Standard equipment: "s Touring" plus leather trimmed seats, heated front seats, automatic climate control, driver info system, auto on/off headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, Xenon HID headlights, tire pressure monitor system, security system, LED taillights (5-Door).

The new 2006 Mazda3 model lineup is streamlined and less complex, and we expect the great sales momentum to continue in 2006 for this class-leading compact car!

it's great that the 2006 pricing is already out, gotta give it up for Mazda since we're not even September yet, (but very close to it)

Does anyone know what is the price difference between the 2005 and 2006? I know the 06 has gone up but i want to know the exact figure.

did the GFX package price also went up? it's priced now at $1195 CDN for 06.

the optional 5 speed auto is at $1100 CDN, is it worth it?

    Mazda 3 Sport GS
    2005 : C$20,285 (manual); C$21,285 (4 speed automatic)
    2006 : C$20,395 (manual); C$21,495 (5 speed automatic)

    Mazda 3 Sport GT
    2005 : C$21,485 (manual); C$22,485 (4 speed automatic)
    2006 : C$21,695 (manual); C$22,795 (5 speed automatic)

A/C = C$1,000 (same as last year); Moonroof = C$800 (same as last year)

As you can see the increase from last year is modest.

The manual gets better fuel economy and is more fun to drive except if you're constantly in city traffic. The 5 speed automatic should improve its fuel efficiency rating over last year's 4 speed; automatics remove the pain of driving in stop 'n' go traffic. If you're comfortable with both, I would recommend the manual on the principle that there is no pleasure without a little pain! ;)

I saw a US EPA rating posted somewhere: 25/32 for the 5-speed automatic. Of course, the manual still gets better mileage.
