A tax credit is generally more valuable than an equivalent tax deduction because a tax credit reduces tax dollar-for-dollar, while a deduction only removes a percentage of the tax that is owed. Because tax deductions reduce taxable income, and taxes owed are a percentage of taxable income, then tax deductions offer a fractional reduction in taxes owed. Tax credits, on the other hand, come directly out of the taxes owed, saving the taxpayer one dollar for each dollar of credit.
Based on this information, I am thinking that there will be a $2,100 reduction in tax bill either in the form of a higher refund or lower tax liability. So there is essentially no net price difference between a Civic Hybrid and a Civic EX (Civic Hybrid $21,300 before tax credit and $19,000 for Civic EX). I know it does sound a little too good to be true but that is what the tax credit language led me to believe. Can anyone elaborate their actual tax benefit related from purchasing a hybrid vehicle. Thank you.
2007 Galaxy grey Civic hybrid without navigation.
Price: $19,938 including destination fee.
Extra fees: 5% MA sales tax, $86 plates, $5 title, $295 document fee.
Overall I was out of the door for $21,320.65 for under a day's work. I requested e-mail quotes on Friday evening via a couple of web-sites. Then while I was a delearship on Saturday haggling a price (which would have been over $1000 more than I ended up paying), another dealership called me and offered me the above deal. He said he would probably make a loss, but needed the deal to meet monthly targets. I went overand everything was as promised. I'm due to pick up the car Mon or Tue.
Since the sale closed on 06/30, I assume I'll also just qualify for the $2100 tax credit.
As far as the sales tax, I just meant that since you don't pay sales tax at the dealership in MO that it wouldn't be included in the final price like in KS. If you happen to get this and haven't already bought one, let me know if you have anymore questions.
Thanks,
Mark
The lowest price I can get now is $21100.
If anyone get price lower than that in bay area, would you please email me your dealer at your earliest conveinet time?
Thanks

I am looking into buying a new Civic Hybrid. I contacted the closest 4 dealers and the best price I was able to get was $21,205. I don't recall the exact invoice number but this seems to be close to it (the MSRP was $23,195). Can I do better?
Before I pursue this, I have some questions and was hoping I could get some help.
I drive about 25,000 miles per year, 80%-85% of which is pure highway and mostly flat. What can I expect for fuel efficiency?
I bought a Ford Fusion SEL V6 at the end of February and driven it 10,500 miles and have averaged 28.2 MPG overall - right around EPA estimates. I keep the cruise at 60 MPH with the A/C on nearly all the time and drive with an egg under my foot to obtain these numbers. If I did the same with the Civic hybrid, can I get 50 MPG?
I am concerned about battery life. How long will these batteries last and what is their replacement cost? I know they're warrantied 80,000 miles but that is only 3 years for me at my current driving pace.
Putting aside the fact that I am going to get killed on my trade and be stepping down in class, I calculated a $100 per month in fuel savings at $3 per gallon. If I get the federal tax credit of $2,100 the price paid for the hybrid is effectively $19,105 as it stands. I'm hoping to get around $17.5k for my trade (taking a $5k hit). This means I'd recover the difference not including the loss on the Fusion ($1,600) in 16 months of driving and fuel savings at $3 per gallon of fuel.
In addition, my insurance costs will decrease (don't recall the amount) somewhat.
Do you believe I should keep what I have? Buy the hybrid? Or go for the EX Sedan model for $18,800?
Thanks for any insight and assistance, I really appreciate it. I wish I had considered the hybrid before I bought the Fusion (which I really like BTW).
Thanks,
Eric
Plus, you are taking a big hit on depreciation.. because, you are selling a six-month old car..
If you won't break even for 16 months, why not keep driving the car you have? It seems like you really like it. Re-evaluate the situation in another year. You may find that you are better off, or that trading at that time may make more sense.

For the previous posters asking about price, are you asking about out-the-door price or sale price?
Also, any advice on the extended warranty?
I live in Dallas. I called ~20+ dealers in Texas to get price-quotes and have dealers compete against each other, without ever having to step into a dealer.
I saw the Edmunds TMV for this car was $21533 (just car price, without destination) for our area when we bought it, and I just checked, and it looks like it's now $21754.
We actually whittled down some dealers. We found 2 in the San Antonio area that would get it for invoice price, and we found 2 in Dallas for invoice.
They added $150 HDAG (Honda Dealer Advertising Group), which "i think" was pretty normal, considering other people said they were paying 1% of sale price. So the price of the car we paid for was $20789, plus TTL, tax, and advertising fee.
The dealership experience was fairly good, since I pretty much had an agreed price by the time we walked in.
Would you be able to post your dealer up? You got an awesome deal. Thanks in advance,
VK
Just wondering which MD/VA dealer gave you such a great deal? Thanks,
VK
Could you please email me the name of the dealership and sales person name in the BayArea. I am in San Jose. I am looking to buy a 2007 HCH within the next few days. Thanks!

$399.00 Customer Service Fee
$649.10 NC State Tax (3%)
$69.00 New Tags (NCDMV)
$22354.82 Total Price
Did I do well?
One concern is the great variety of additional fees -- apparently in addition to destination fees, state sales tax and tags/license -- that people on this forum have been charged. The wide range of them makes me suspicious that they may be trumped up & padded fees (sort of like junk fees on a mortgage) - customer service fees (post #439); Honda Dealer Advertising Group; document fees; etc. Are any of them standard and valid (contrary to my suspicions), or should I refuse to pay any of these if they suddenly appear on a sales contract I'm about to sign?
Thanks, and I welcome any suggestions.

Thanks.

I would appreciate any advice on getting the best price possible and any info on holdbacks/givebacks on this model.
I bought an 07 without Navi at the Flagstaff Honda dealership Saturday 9/29...last day of the month, close-out model year, and they STILL wouldn't go below $23,000 inclusive (tax, license, delivery, etc.) The sticker on it was over $25 - $25,350-ish I think.
The car had been shipped up from Phoenix, and had options of the integrated mud flaps (these look nice, I had no truck with them) and the door and finger guards, which are little clear pieces of plastic to protect from scratches that they have the audacity to sticker at $549 (we went round and round on that one).
I traded an '86 Dodge v-8 camping conversion van which has been sitting around unlicensed since 2003 (frankly at $500 trade-in they did me a favor getting it out of the yard. I put down $1,000 up front, plus paid cash for the 5-year, 100,000 miles bumper to bumper for $800. (They listed this at $1,500+, so there is definitely negotiating room on the extended warranty). I didn't go longer because frankly, I only intend to keep the car about 5 years - once it's paid off and out of warranty I'll be ready to trade or sell it anyhow as I expect hybrid technology to get better during that time.
Buying experience? Well, let's just say it was entertaining. They really went overboard in acting like they were giving me an incredible deal, which we both know they weren't. Bottom line was that I wanted the car before heading on a road trip later this week, and I'm OK with the price. But next time I'll go back to my previous new-car strategy: using a Valley dealership and ordering the car instead of buying off of the lot.
A couple of additional details that might help you:
As of the end of September there was $500 dealer cash available. Don't know about October and beyond.
I let Honda carry the paper, but then refinanced first thing Monday morning. They are giving me a ration of you-know-what about that. They are saying that they sent the paperwork in and I will have to deal with Honda Financial. Honda Financial says they haven't received either the credit app or the loan paperwork yet, and that the dealer can request a retraction. The dealer is saying this will cost them $ to cancel and they won't do it. We're still fighting this one out. When I walk in tomorrow with a $22,000 check, I bet they will find a way to resolve it.
Good luck!

After my initial post, I did a little deeper digging on Edmunds regarding final price of this car (including tax, license, etc.) and found that for my area, overall I got a better deal than I originally thought. Edmunds came up with a final, inclusive price about $25,000 (I don't have the figure in front of me). I STILL think the dealership personnel were overacting a bit about how great the deal was, but I now know there was more truth behind it than I originally thought.
Second, they were able to work out the Honda Financial issue, which was really bothering me when I wrote my first post. In retospect, I think the financial manager overreacted a bit - Honda Financial tells me that their fee to cancel the loan would have been about $50. But they were able to stop the process before incurring any costs to the dealership.
Final thoughts on the transaction - this was my first time doing business with a "small town" dealership, and I walked in pretty defensive and skeptical. It is a different buying experience than in a large, competitive market, but not necessarily a worse experience (like many people, I'm not fond of car dealerships - it's a little like going to a casino, the odds are stacked in the House's favor). But overall, I'm pleased with the outcome, and I WOULD do business with Flagstaff Honda again, and will share this information with anyone who asks.
Since my original post, I've taken the car on a 150 mile trip down to the Phoenix area and was quite pleased to average 45 mpg. Since its first mile, the car is averaging 33 mpg. Considering that my other car is a Jeep Wrangler X that gets maybe 24 mpg on the same drive, I am more than happy with the car performance so far. It's comfortable, holds the road nicely, and is fun to drive.

can you give me the name of the dealer in norcal.
We paid $22,600 before T&L, which included splash guards and a 6 year/120k HondaCare warranty (zero deductible). We overpaid for the warranty by $65 over the Sarducci deal, but I figured that getting it all wrapped up in the deal (leaving nothing more for me to do with it) was worth it.
Also snagged the 4.9 interest rate and got a better trade on our Odyssey than the dealer up the street wanted to give.
Last but not least, I (modestly!) would think of myself as a pretty savvy car buyer. Edmunds recent piece on the inside experiences of being a car salesman was VERY helpful. As we went back & forth between the two dealers, it was as if I was reading the script before the actors were reciting their lines. What a riot! For those who haven't read it, look here: Confessions of a Car Salesman
FWIW, I ended up going with the dealer we were referred to by Costco, but we ended up getting an even better deal (through that same dealer). The Costco referral made the starting point much closer to the final deal.
The only negatives were the long waits (again, seemingly part of the script) and hunting for the remote control in the customer lounge while we were waiting our turn for the finance guy. Small price to pay for a car we already love!
Thanks
Paid $21,800 out of the door with Goodwin Honda in SC.
Saleslady and manager were very nice. If you call them, you can say that Carlos has recommended.
First tank lasted 547 miles and the 3rd has 474 miles so far.
He'll go as low as $22,395 for an '08 w/o NAV. That's only $840 off MSRP but is better than local and also $500 less than TMV as per Edmunds for '08's in my Zip.
Any thoughts? I need to buy within a month.
Eric
I'm interested so please email me your details alexmk74@hotmail.com
Thanks
According to the Honda website, the "certified used" designation affords "powertrain coverage for seven years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) from the vehicle's original in-service date and non-powertrain coverage for 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first) from the original warranty expiration date or, if the original warranty has expired, from the Honda Certified Used Cars purchase date." Thus, I am perplexed as to why the buyer's guide is checked "as is" and yet the car is supposedly "certified used" which should provide warranty coverage. The sales associate indicated that the buyer's guide sheet must be checked "as is" by state law, which makes no sense to me since the "certified used" designation supposedly provides warranty coverage.
I'm concerned that something underhanded may be occuring here or perhaps the buyer's guide is incorrectly marked "as is" or the sales associate may not be well informed. Can anyone explain this to me?
Thank you for your consideration.
If you feel something is fishy or the deal is too good o be true IT PROBABLY IS.
Also make sure you are getting a decent deal for the older 2003 - 2005 model design. The redesigned, as of 2006, Civic hybrid is very much improved in terms of safety, styling, and reliability. You may be able to find a similar priced 2006 from a private party. Try craigslist.org.
GoodLuck.
Could someone let me know if this is a good deal in Southern Cal for a 2008 Civic EX-L, No Navigation package..
$347 month
$642 "down" includes 1st month and some fees(bank) but no cap reduction
12k/year, 36 month lease.
I know there are not a lot of details here, just wanted a general sense if this is a good deal.
Thanks...
As advised by some of the gurus on this forum, I requested internet quotes from all the Honda dealers in Southern Cali. I want to buy a 2008 Civic Hybrid Sedan with Navigation.
The lowest quote I have received so far is $23,250. Do you think this is a good price or should I try to bring the dealer down further? And if so, by how much do you think the dealer may come down?
I am in desperate need of a car and have to buy it in 3-4 days :-(((

paid about $21K, no navi but great service, also took my jeep liberty trade in and gave me fair value, not high-not low, but more than going back to Creep-Chrysler.
anyone got a good source for the nice dash covers?
An">yone with the interior/exterior stain protection package?
Here is some info about me.
* I live in the Kentucky/Indiana area. We don’t have cold northern winters, but we are not a true southern climate either.
* I am a value oriented type of person. That is why the HCH appeals to me. I don’t like to drive off the lot with a new car due to the steep decline in depreciation.
* I tend to be a bit hard on the exterior and interior of the car. I don’t keep things tidy, and I can be a little careless sometimes.
* I am a fairly conservative driver.
* I drive about 1,500 to 2,000 miles a month. Almost entirely highway, and most of that is interstate.
I don’t know if I should look for an “07 with low miles, buy an ’06, or save the money and get and get an ’05. I like the low prices on the ’05s, and I assume they are quite a bit lower than the ’06 due to the change in body style. I don’t know if there are other things that are different about the ’05 as compared to the later models. I don’t know if the engine technology got better, kinks got ironed out or what not in the later models. Can people PLEASE weigh in on this? It would help me make a decision. I want to get the new car bought soon because I think it will be harder to find HCHs on the market when summer arrives and gas goes up (again)
