My Moms 2015.5 V60 CC is sitting at the Volvo dealer. Was smoking and lost 2.5 quarts of oil in less than 1000 miles.

Car has a blown piston seal/ring. At 42k miles. Some quick googling shows this is a known issue on these cars. It is covered by warranty but would otherwise be north of $5000.

Can anyone more mechanically inclined tell me what the odds are of damage to the cylinder walls as a result?

Service Advisor at 42K miles writes up: "Customer states car was smoking." "Service technician could not replicate smoking." "Technician noted car was low on oil. Added 2.5 Quarts of oil and noted this is perfectly within specification."

Service Advisor at 50,100 miles writes up: "Customer states car was smoking." Service technician noted engine was dangerously low on oil (over 2 1/2 quarts). Service technician advises vehicle needs a new engine."
Frankly that’s exactly what we were expecting. I’m surprised they ran it to ground now.

Yikes. So that is the turbo 4, right?

Odds? Eh, tough to say. All depends on how it went about it. I would think it is more likely it scored the wall than not.

Thanks. Don’t know what problems he is talking about, though. All the RWD 5.7 years are reliable from what I know.

Theres a very good chance that a broken ring would damage the cylinder wall; I don't keep up with Volvos, but if the cylinder wall is a coating rather than iron or an iron sleeve I'd wager the motor is Tango Uniform.

That's brutal on a low mileage higher end car.

I'm glad I'm leasing my Volvo. I think I'd be scared out of warranty.

That was the early drive E issue. I know along the way they Changed oil recommended. But definitely a known issue and design flaw. I don’t recall if they but different rings in too. Just be glad it got handled under warranty without a fight.

Also why I let the dealer do all the oil changes during warranty period!

Definitely heard less than good things about the Drive-E engines, especially the early ones. Made me really narrow my Volvo focus when last I shopped, and I still had some worries about the bevel gear issues on the AWD models, which helped push me out of the rest of the line.

Stick with FWD 5 banger turbo. Crude but effective, and durable with basic maintenance.

    That's gold, Jerry, gold!

Car looks great on the outside but the front seats especially look like the foam/padding has given out under the upholstery. I don't think they looked quite so flat and featureless originally. So that is a few $ to put right. If it was me buying it I would need to replace the catalog air cleaner and valve covers with originals too. But still a neat car.

That's what my V70 was... great car but after 12 years and 192K miles it was going to need too much stuff to remain viable as a DD. Thing is, I'm pretty sure the 2.5T and FWD combo was long gone from the wagons.

I did test drive a XC60 with the old-school T6, but didn't love it. Everything I was looking at was going to be a compromise.

That Camaro doesn't seem insanely priced given recent interest in cars of that period. Definitely needs some business in the front and party in the back. Also good for fans of this:

Kind of tempted by this. It is obviously not the fastest SUV, but it is cheap (overpriced as is, believe it or not). There is another ML AMG I found and actually sent to the wife. But then I think to myself "would I even want to drive the Charger when my SUV goes 0-60 in 4.5?" So maybe I should get a slower, cheaper R500. LOL.

That one looks really clean. What is the 0-60 like in that? It must be 6 ish which is still pretty quick for a vehicle of that size.

I didn't think so, although I always referred to the R as the "Mercedes minivan."

Does anyone else get the mental image of Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski saying "you're entering a world of pain" every time qb posts these 10-15 year old high-performance German SUVs?

R-class (W251) does not share anything with the Pacifica that I recall, other than similar styling. IIRC it is based on the contemporary ML.

I always somewhat liked the look of them - and they could be had in some nice colors, but not from MB's finest hour, so like with all old German cars, caution and PPIs are good. R63s still bring good money and due to rarity probably always will. Oddly enough, I am pretty sure the R is still available in China, or was until recently.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,345

Yes, oddly enough, the R and Pac were totally different platforms. We leased a Pac and really liked it. Only reason we didn’t buy it out was because it had the dreaded Chrysler 4-spd self-destructomatic.

Yes, I have a minivan, but it does not have a v8 and handles far far worse than the R. It is a v8 station wagon, not a minivan.

0-60 is 6.5. That big engine is only 302 hp, unfortunately.
