I think 5-speed coupes are probably the easiest 5-speeds to find, though. At least from my searching, they seem to be far more plentiful than 5-speed verts or sedans.
I know in years to come I'm going to regret not buying that blue one I drove a couple of months back. The $3500 price is looking better and better all the time.

I figured you'd say that about the AWD. BUT, would you really rather compromise on the automatic?
I decided to look that coupe up in my little book. I don't know if Galves can be trusted in a situation such as this because it penalizes so harshly for miles, and that car has SO MANY miles, it is actually an $8k deduct!! So, all in all, Galves hits that coupe at all of $2500 trade-in value.
The wagon looks to be ~$4500-$5k.

I have the same model BMW, and the light should shut off when the engine is running, and the engine is running. Could be due for a service as well. Any route I would not buy it with that light on. Could be any number of things.
Here's an outrageously priced oddball. The guy adverts it like its collectible, but when you see what he did to the interior, you realize he's just a jerk.
But it is just a service light. It is not a check engine light. The check engine light means something is broke. The service light is nothing but a timer to get you to go to the dealer. So, yes, it is due for service.

You can't straight deduct for the miles on a car like that. Don't the Galves book still have the little help guide in the back about deducting for very high miles or adding for very low miles? I never use a real book anymore so I don't remember you have to divide by a certain factor plus use your own judgment then then look at what house the moon is in plus the direction of the breeze to figure out a value on a car like that. :P
The computer version of Galves says deduct 5,300 for miles so if that car has premium and I think it does then Galves puts it between $4,700 and $5,800
You know how long I looked for that exact wagon? I think they made some nice tweaks for 2001 (or maybe that was just the 5 series).
anyway, I personally love that green color (and dark blue), so it works for me.
Dang, I really wish I was actually supposed to be getting a car right now. That, and Limerick was a lot closer to me (alhtough my aughter has been bugging to go to the philoadelphis premium outlets which are, let me see, in Limerick!)
The biggest problem though is I would have to be prepared to use it for a possible heavy duty (500miles/week) commute + local duty, and I don't think this is the best car to start jamming 25-30K/year on.
Somehow, I expect that car just might hang around the lot for a while. RWD in winter, plus not sure how big a market there is for 5 speed wagons.
yeah, i figured there has to be some sort of loophole.
No, they don't explain much in the book. Now they basically say "see our online evaluator." Bastards!
In the newer car book, it has slightly better instructions, but in the '98-'03 book, they really leave you hangin. Heck, there are even footnote symbols throughout and NO legend to explain what they mean!

I am not sue yet about the commute change, plus I would have to do something with my Accord.
I actually have thought about getting something in good shape that is know to be durable (usually a S60) and just rolling up the Odo on it.
When you are doding semis on the Surekill (Lemko knows what that means) for 2-3 hours/day, you put a premium on comfort and safety. It was also the impetus for the switch to an AT.
Of course, I could use my "spare" car (at least while my son is away at school and it is just sitting here), but I am not sure piling more miles on a TL with 150K on the original tranny i sthe way to go either!
Also don't think I can possibly get a 4th car past my wife, and since my son doesn't drive stick (hmm, maybe I should just try to teach him again?), keeping the accord and ditching the TL ain't an option.
If that green one is clean though, I do want it bad. Might have to plan a trip to the outlets on saturday, of course without telling my wife the real reason.
Offer them 7K cash on the spot, and whats the worst that happens? They say no!
Actually, the worst that happens is my wife hits me with a fry pan, put that's the price you pay.
actually, if it is in good shape, if you can buy that one cheap (say, $7,500), and other 50K on it won't lead to much depreiciation. Maybe 4K in 2 years?
buy something new, and it will drop way more than that rolling up 50K on it!
probably way offsets the expected repair costs. Every car has routine maintenance, and unless the clutch goes, all I need to do is budget for the new radiator/t-stat/water pump when I buy it, and cross my fingers!
Damn, I want this car, and bad.
maybe I could keep the accord just for the winter?
I actually have thought about getting something in good shape that is know to be durable (usually a S60) and just rolling up the Odo on it.
I'd rather take my chances on rolling up an E46 odo than a S60. Newer Volvos don't inspire a ton of long-term confidence, from what I've read. Not that I'm trying to be an enabler...
If I was going to put that kind of mileage on a S60 I would stick with a 2.5T FWD. I just don't know if I trust the AWD for that kind of miles a year as they just haven't been as durable as the FWD models. That and the AWD eats up tires and brakes faster especially in the older S60s.
And, yes, it would be FAR cheaper to mile up a car like this than something newer and more expensive. Heck, if you drove it right into the ground in 3 years, that's only $7500. That's not bad as far as 30k/yr depreciation goes. :shades:
Lookit my Benz. That only has to last a year and the $1500 would have been well spent.

I'd rather find a low mileage 850 or even S70 than an S60. I'm not sure why, though. I guess I just feel volvo has gone too far with all the electronics and sensors that are all tied together and rely on one another (not that volvo is the only one doing that, of course).

What about something like this? Nice low miles. Cheap to maintain and operate. Good resale. And its only priced $1k over Galves. (which actually gives me pause and warrants a run through carfax.)

yeah, with the S60, it was the 2.5T FWD I would get. I am staying away from Volvo QWD (BMW too for that matter).
Like the Si, but not the color. also a bit of a buzz box on the highway. Almost got one of these back when they were clearing them out for a ridiculous price like 14K new.
Of all these, the green wagon is easily my favorite. Plus, a stick 3 series actually has less to go wrong with it! They seem pretty durable I guess, at least the engines, if you keep on top of them (and I am big on preventive maintenance).
So, what would be a good price to offer and walk away at?
The S60 really isn't that different then a S70 but you have more safety features and a basically modern radio. Get a non-turbo S60 and they are very, very similar cars.
More then one of our techs and service writers say the S60 is the most reliable car, leaving out the AWD models of course, Volvo has ever mad
Even more reliable then the 240s as the S60s don't really rust and require far less regular preventive maintenance. The later S60s have timing belt changes at 105,000 miles compared to 50,000 or less on the older Volvos.
OK. well, here is the Galves rundown on that wagon.
4900-5850 w/88k miles. deduct w/o AT $400 add Sport $300 (I think that seat means sport)
I'm not real sure what to deduct on miles, since this is where Galves sees fit to give me a footnote and no explanation of what it means. If we assume $100/1k, as on the '04 bimmers, then its a $700 knock.
So that means, on the top end, $5k trade value. That's for one that is market ready. If the dealer fell all over themselves to buy it and paid $5k, they say local trade, so no transport to speak of, then detailed it. Let's say a this and a that put into it and MAYBE they are into it for $5500 in the end. I think $7k is quite fair. $7500 is the absolute limit if you fall completely in love with it and it needs nothing.
That's all my nonprofessional assessment. Take it for what its worth.

...about a new ride for stick means that we've not been able to pester andre about the Altima.
Did the 'Trep get picked up today, as planned? Do you have check in hand? Are you going to at least drive the Altima and share with us your thoughts?
I guess I'm just surprised that someone who loves cars as much as you hasn't been at the dealer, test driving just about anything that sneaks onto the radar. And, unlike stick, you don't even have a wife to hide it from.
So you want this car bad? If you haven't taken a test drive, you really don't know for sure. Costs nothing. 90% of the cars I thought I really wanted got cut after the reality of a test ride and thorough walkaround. And if you still want it your wife won't ok the deal anyway. When the time comes to buy something else will look just as good.
I think we are all getting weak around here. Andre is still thinking, Stick is a little hesitant on this wagon. And this weekend, my wife agreed to look at car at a local dealer, and I put it off and didn't end up going at all.
I must have bumped my head and forgotten about it...
No Sport package on AWD wagons of that age. You could only get it on the rwd wagons. That wagon does have the premium package though cause it has dual power seats. Sport package BMWs have the adjustable thigh support and large wheels.
Galves says 4,800 to 5,800 with 5,800 being market ready. If they paid $5,800 for it, which is a big if, then I don't think $7,000 gets it done maybe $7,500 does. I would still offer $7,000 and see what happens.

"It's the economy, stupid!"
Maybe, and maybe it's just cold and Christmas is coming and we're all busy doing other things and ...
How in the world did you not go to the dealer, specifically after you were able to get the wife to agree to go with you?
Geez, tough crowd around here! I only learned about this one a couple of hours ago. And it is at least 60+ miles from here, on the other side of Philadelphia, so not an easy thing to check out on the fly.
And to answer the other points:
I don't actually have to ask the wifee. I have done dumber things than this and gotten away with it. The only thing I can't try again is buying a new car for her (that did not go over well, but c'est la vie!).
And no, I have not driven this particular car, but I have driven a number of varients of this series (E29? 46? Hike!). Sedan, wagon and vert, sport and non-sport. So, I already know that I really like them, especially with the fancy seats.
And yeah, this is a sport package (+ premium) car, so pretty much fully loaded. Besides the seats with the neat adjustable thigh support, I will pay extra for the 3-spole steering wheel (I never really liked the standard wheel design). The wagon is heavy enough that the sport suspension and 45 series tires aren't too rough (did not work nearly as well on the convertible I tried).
If this sucker was local to me, I would have stopped by today, "just to browse".
If it was clean, good sneaks, etc., yeah I would pay 7K for it.
as long as whatever I get is less than what I can get out of my 2005 Accord (yes in this case), and my wife isn't embarrassed to be seen in it (or plain doesn't fit, again OK here), I can pretty much do whatever I want.
Heck, she was the one pushing me to get the new 525 back in 2001, when I cheaped out and refused to drop 39K +TTL on it!
Hmmm, maybe I should disappear for a while and take a ride tomorrow?
Too bad it wasn't last week. I was about 10 minutes from there at lunch time last Friday! I may have to go back before X Mas, and if it is still there, will make a small detour.
I think you are looking at the wrong one. The one he wants now is the green one with 95k miles and without AWD. It does have the adjustable thigh support, so its sport, but it does not have a wood dash, so i'm not sure on the premium.

Yeah, you'd have to learn that pretty quickly or else you'd wrap the thing around a tree. It'd be nice if you could flip a switch and detune the thing, especially for street driving (kind of like M mode on the M5).
My SES or service engine soon light came on when a sensor when out in the radiator. On a BMW you dont replace the sensor, you replace the entire radiator! On my E 46 the SES is the check engine light. When you start the car you have a count down timer that comes on for the service side of things.
say it's boring and such but I am really loving my Camry right now. The suspension is great! So far I have put 200 miles on it and am still at half a tank of gas. It is quiet on the highway and comfortable. I wouldve preferred the 6MT but this Atlanta commute was getting to me in manuals so I appreciate the smooth shifting 6-speed auto with auto/manual option.
That green wagon is nice. After Gee finishes tinkering with his Prelude, I wouldn't mind picking up a nice old 3-series convertible as a fun weekend car.
Guess you really are feeling better! Does the new one have the "computer screen" gauges? Or the multiple parking cameras? I saw those on the latest episode of Top Gear.
No, it doesn't have the corner camera's which seemed odd when they were described to me. One camera is on each side view mirror facing down and the front camera's are at the corners of the front bumper. It seems the front camera's would be dirty most of the time. The bumper sensors seem the best to me for sensing an obstacle.
I DO have the rear camera which is nice.... I have that in the Honda CR-V and the Bentley. I'm not sure what you mean about the computer gauges but in between the tach and speedometer, there is a computer screen that controls a lot of functions.
I like the 'motorized' tilt wheel vs. the manual type like before. I always left my other steering wheel in the top position but will move this one more as it's very easy.

Believe me, I'd be a chronic car buyer if I could....love 'em.
But even though I'm not, I'm guessing that you who ARE car buyers might know the answer to this simple question.
My mechanic says December is the best time to buy a car because the dealers have to pay taxes on their inventory that's on the lot at the end of the year.
a) is that true? b) does that include their pre-owned stock?
I'm asking because I'm looking to buy a secondhand car from a dealer this week and if the tax-thing is true, then maybe dragging my feet a bit...say for a week more...might make my offer look a little better to them as December plays out? This car is at a Florida Honda dealership if that makes a difference.
Basically, I'd like to say "Hey. I see right here that this car's been on the lot since October 1st and if you don't sell it this month..." without them laughing me out of the showroom. Better find out if it's true first!

I might just swing over to look at it if it was not AWD. The BMW system doesn't have the best reputation IIRC, and I am just fine with RWD.

More then one of our techs and service writers say the S60 is the most reliable car, leaving out the AWD models of course, Volvo has ever mad
Even more reliable then the 240s as the S60s don't really rust and require far less regular preventive maintenance. The later S60s have timing belt changes at 105,000 miles compared to 50,000 or less on the older Volvos.

4900-5850 w/88k miles.
deduct w/o AT $400
add Sport $300 (I think that seat means sport)

:P

Galves says 4,800 to 5,800 with 5,800 being market ready. If they paid $5,800 for it, which is a big if, then I don't think $7,000 gets it done maybe $7,500 does. I would still offer $7,000 and see what happens.
"It's the economy, stupid!"
Maybe, and maybe it's just cold and Christmas is coming and we're all busy doing other things and ...
How in the world did you not go to the dealer, specifically after you were able to get the wife to agree to go with you?

I do have little desire to try an sell my Accord right now. No idea how hard that would be.
Guess that's why they invented trade ins!

I picked up a new 2010 Land Rover LR4 HSE LUX today (Black with Almond leather).
Traded in the '06 LR3 with only 32,700 miles. It was a good Rover! Hopefully the new one will be too!
I like the upgraded electronics, additional interior lighting, heated steering wheel and the 'ice box' in the console!
The HP went from 300 on the '06 to 375 on the '10. Gas mileage is the same.
I bought the same color so nobody would notice I bought a new car...

That green wagon is nice. After Gee finishes tinkering with his Prelude, I wouldn't mind picking up a nice old 3-series convertible as a fun weekend car.
We needed the boost...

Thanks!
