I'd hate to be a buyer right now. Dozens of offers on the first day, one for 20% over list and waived inspection, pending in under 48 hours - and it isn't in the cheapest area. Crazy days.

Well, selling is the right side of the equation now, so kudos to your family for that!

Indeed. I enjoyed being a seller (three days on market, 6 offers, best and final= above asking and expectation, all cash & no contingencies), But, tempered by buying new (but the last build was $42k less! Stupid supply/demand...).

Snow wheels off, regular wheels on - it was fun playing faux-butch with black wheels and thick tires, but I think these look more refined, suits the car:

I think they are both a nice match for it. Variety works, too.
They are very similar to the wheels on my S60.
Damn impulsive buy (which I've never done before!); perhaps I should have checked out the S60 T8. Nice looking wheels, you got there.

    @laurasdada,
I can only adjust the nav speaking level while it is actually speaking using the radio volume knob.

I believe same here; a low tech solution in a high tech system.

on the acuras, changing volume level while talking worked. But there is also a volume setting in one of the Navi menus. My Hyundai Sonata worked the same way.

also works for bluetooth when on a phone call I think, to dial up or down the speaker.

I have to wonder how long it will last. Even a slight rate increase might slow things down a lot - I think a lot of people are spending their max as it is.

In my area, opportunist flippers and corporate rental groups are also making a mess of the lower end of the market.

My 18 year old and I finished up a very complete set of test drives today. Over the last week, he and I have looked at the CR-V, RDX (2018 CPO), Tiguan, CX-5, RAV4, Tucson, Santa Fe and the new Rogue.

The finalists came down to the Rogue, RDX and Tiguan. And today, with second test drives of those, he declared confidently the Tiguan as the best choice. Without necessarily being able to articulate it, I gathered he preferred the turbo 4 cylinders over the N/A ones, and didn’t like the feel of the CVTs. The RDX of course had the best drivetrain, but it was antiquated when it came to infotainment and interior design.

He thought the Tiguan had a premium feel in the way it drives, combined with a nice interior and feature set.

We considered the SE, SE R-line and SEL. The SEL would have been a bit over our budget, but we may have considered it for the right deal. But as it turned out, he prioritized exterior and interior color, and enthusiastically chose a mid-trim SE w/pano roof in Atlantic Blue with the gray leatherette.

It had just come in, so we won’t pick it up until Monday, but finalized the deal and paperwork today. It was fun going through the shopping process with him - he’s very excited about his new ride.

So ... you’re net even for the year?

so what is the kid going to get in 6 months to replace it?

just curious, what was the downside to the CX5? I have been researching the CX30 lately. Sounds like a nice vehicle. smaller and sportier than a CX5. My son is even looking at them, since the turbo is pretty quick, and he is considering some sort of hatch/utility to make doing stuff around the new house easier (and a lot cheaper than buying a PU too).

2 live in my neighborhood. white, and a darker silver/gray that looks really sharp.

I’m not entirely sure on the CX-5 - I actually saved it for last that day, after the RDX, CR-V and Tiguan. I thought he would find it a more refined option, but he just wasn’t impressed, and I have to admit it didn’t set itself apart from the other test drives.

This was the n/a 4 cylinder, as the turbo models are pricey, so it may have been a different story with the turbo option.

It is a ridiculous market right now in general, but people pushing themselves to the edge isn't going to help them in the future.... especially if the housing market moderates, which it likely will, at least periodically. People now seem to be very much into the swapping houses every several years mode rather than settling down for the long haul, and that just doesn't tend to work out well if you push yourself to the max.

That’s been true since before the last housing bubble collapse. I don’t know if it’s thinking that you can always find a greater fool or if it’s similar to folks who take their stimulus/refund check and buy a car they can’t afford.

A little, but not enough to buy that fintail blue G or a house or anything. However, my mom's house has 30 years of deferred maintenance to the point where she's going to just buy another house and let someone else deal with it, so she needs it more anyway, glad she'll be set.

House sale has been pretty wild, too - market is crazier than I expected.

It's not just houses either. I watched a few minutes of the B-J auction last night (about as much of it as I could stand) and it was just nuts. A bunch of $300K Chevelle SS 396s, the usual 7-figure charitable VIN #1 cars, and too many crapwagon restomods still getting 6 figures or close to it. There's a lot of money floating around right now looking for a home.

not in my bank account! I can certainly squeeze in a used Jetta without a 2nd thought, but dropping nearly 6 figures on some toy car, that ain't in the budget. Well, I guess if I wanted to just keep pushing out retirement another year to buy something I have zero need for it could be!

I wonder how many people are buying these because they just always wanted one, and have money from someplace to do it, versus jumping onto the tulip bulb train and hoping they aren't getting on at the last stop?

Houses at least you can live in, and if it is younger families trying to get someplace to raise their kids in (long term residence) it makes more sense. Plus, the housing stock really is not going to be increasing very much so if population booms at all (and any kind of baby boom) price pressure on that will just get worse.

was next to a prior gen (or 2) Murano yesterday, towing a U Haul trailer. That sucker was way wider than I thought, and really looked oversized for that Nissan. It was the bigger cargo enclosed trailer (double axle) which turned out to be 6x12. Driver was not very good about keeping it in their lane.

looked it up. That one weighs just about 2,000 pounds empty. So not something for a low capacity tow vehicle, especially if you are putting a fair amount of stuff in it. Even if my RDX had the hitch required, I wouldn't put something that big behind it. Also got laugh, since on their specs page, U haul says the max speed is 55!

The single axle 5x8 looks a lot more manageable. That is only 900#s empty. Anything should be able to tow that.

Probably easier to drive a cargo van instead. A Transit normal wheelbase looks big, but turns out is smaller than most new 1/2 ton PUs. About 219" long, so only 2-10 more than a Tacoma or Ridgeline, and probably the same as a short bed, short cab F150. And at 82" wide, probably about the same width. So I guess can park anyplace that handles a normal PU now. But zero chance I am trying to take one of those into a city parking garage! I assume Hertz rents the short WB, normal roof height models. They come in XL wheelbase (so about 239" length) and low, medium and high roof.

Finding a place to stash it in the city, that is going to be interesting.

My wife and I would love to move out of a neighborhood and to a larger piece of property that isn't too remote where she can do her organic gardening and I have room for a 'toy'. We could easily downsize from 2800 sq/ft. Houses are selling quickly and at top price like other areas of the country. The issue is we can't find what we're looking for or they are asking the sky for it. In addition most need some type of work and we have done all the upgrades, flooring, roof, hvac , water heater, landscaping., painting in our current house which we really don't want to do or afford again. On a car note the Acura is dripping oil. About 2 years ago we had the oil pump resealed. Not sure what is up now. However it isn't bad, in 2k the dipstick is still showing full. It is making a mess of the driveway. Runs and drives fine. No smell of burning oil off the engine. Perhaps the time has come to find something newer for my daughter? My Passat perhaps?? Not sure what the wife will think about that.

True, but it gets parked in different spots. I did a bag of oil absorber (looks like gray kitty litter) that I sprinkle over the drops and leave it in place for a while. That has helped.

I find that the owner’s manual that comes with cars today have very little useful information. It’s mainly overweighted with CYA legal warnings.

I had to call the dealer to figure out how to reset the clock on one car. I shouldn’t have to wade through a hundred pages of legalise to find that.

We had a number of drivers who took the 8’4” high top transit vans into the 8’2” parking garage at the airport. Fortunately the sign was on a pivot so they only scratched the roof.

For some reason they don’t give those to us any more. I wonder why. Normal height vans fit no problem.

the U Haul transit is just the normal height roof, standard length van. As long as that is what I get from Hertz (renting from them to go to Boston) no worries about clearance for height. Even the mid height roof (there are 3 options, low, medium and high) should be fine.

I may have mentioned this here before, but I know a couple where the wife had the same objection. Both the husband and wife have project cars that they work on and occasionally need to tow. At first, they compromised with a used GL450, towing near its maximum capacity. They now have an F-250.

I had my local fence and deck guy out yesterday to provide a bid on repairing my existing deck. It turns out that replacing some boards, pressure washing, and putting down a solid stain on everything (using a resurfacing product on all horizontal surfaces) is less than 1/10 the cost of a new Trex deck.

Happy Passover to all of us that celebrate. Just the two of us since the kids are pretty spread out now, but we're so happy they're all working and happy with their lives. Looks like we did a decent job rasing them!
Our pharmacist daughter said I could take some over the counter meds to help with the sore arm after both Pfizer shots. I did, and it helped!
Home prices down in South Florida are as crazy as the rest of the country it seems, places get snapped up over asking within hours! Right now, we've decided to just stay put until at least 2024 but start looking some time in 2023 just to see if we find the perfect place. I know our current place will go quickly a it's really the perfect place for a small growing family. In the back of our development on a cul-de-sac, a 4/2 with a garage. Needs work but since it's so old, the new owners will want to bring it into the current century. But for now, it works for us and since we've owed nothing on it or for over 25 years, our overhead ain't that bad. I think if we did get a killer offer on it, $450K or so, think I could convince the other half to vacate earlier that planned.
Breld, think your kid will love the VW. I know I still do. Wanted the SEL but got the SE and happy overall. But, thinking about the Chevy Bolt as it's replacement if the government rebates are still happening. Perfect size for my needs and having the Chevy store right outside our development is a nice perk. They also have a Mazda store there, as I've looked at the new CX-30 numerous times lately.

If it has to be a Mustang, I can’t imagine why anyone would NOT get an ‘05+. It was such a massive upgrade in every way.
Including price. Not a lot of 05+ GTs out there with lower mileage for a reasonable cost. I’ve been looking at 05’-09’ convertibles with a stick but they’re not the bargains that I crave. Most are V6 models.

Of course what car is a bargain these days. I bought a 2010 Fusion in June of 2020 and just saw a listing for a 2006 with triple the miles for the same price I paid last year.

    This might work.

Actually I’m just fantasizing about possible replacements for the old Chrysler convertible and maybe adding a stick shift at the same time. It wouldn’t have to be a Mustang but the alternatives that meet my personal criteria are even scarcer than Mustangs.

My wife can’t stand trucks for some reason and therefore we’ve never really looked at one so I don’t think she understands how nice the cabins are these days.

I may have mentioned this here before, but I know a couple where the wife had the same objection. Both the husband and wife have project cars that they work on and occasionally need to tow. At first, they compromised with a used GL450, towing near its maximum capacity. They now have an F-250.

I don’t have a problem with the automatic and the wheels are an easy fix. Awesome color and waaay low miles. Would be a great weekend cruiser.

I wouldn’t mind having that but I’d worry about expensive repairs. A woman I knew bought a 95’ 3 series convertible and the CEL came on the next day.

I’d question why 3 owners in 39k miles. I wonder what that will go for?

Don’t go by mileage. Clearly a car that was owned by folks who treated it like a collector car, so exchanged hands accordingly.

In any case, my take on most of these cars is they’re meant to be driven. I’m not saying driven as in abused, but appreciated. The cars I have were limited in production but have been loved and appreciated. I don’t feel bad driving them.

Always a concern with any German car, particularly a performance model. As @28firefighter mentions, they really like being driven. Sitting on them and ‘preserving’ can do more harm than good.

Just a good excuse for the old Italian tune-up.

I've admittedly been looking at convertibles as well. Mostly S2000s, which are fetching a premium if low miles, but an occasional Mustang and a few E90 era cars as well. So far nothing has motivated me to start moving things around though.

I was looking at S2000s about 7 years ago before they started their price climb. Even back then I couldn’t really justify the price. Now, I just guess I’ll have to admire from afar.

It wasn’t long ago that this would go for around $10k. Too bad, it’s near me.

I am bummed I didn't get the chance to buy my BILs S2000. total creampuff, very low miles, 1st year car. Probably worth way more than what he sold it for too.

I like the red seats. I am very familiar with the HVAC and center console as they are the same in our Q5.

(mine is a mechanical foot brake w/ release lever, which I love, because it reminds me of my old trucks!)
That's what I like about my TJ; it reminds me of the big trucks I drove on my summer job at the KY Highway Department; purpose built with no concessions to style. Even the manual floor shift has a similar throw and weighting.

Yes, the wheels were installed by a brain-dead moron. As for the autobox, I'll pass- I didn't fall in love with modern automatics until ZF introduced the 8HP.
