I haven’t stopped at a lot recently but not surprised. At least some dealers are sticking to MSRP but I’m sure have nice accessory packs. Leasing is still bad. Should be interesting.
Now if my father decided to give up driving in a few months problem would be solved.
Question for the Mass. crowd. Since I’m too lazy to research. How much do you get hit for buying a car up there for doc fees, taxes and DMV stuff? At least ballpark. In Boston sadly.
The princess held off for a year but can’t stand not having a car now. She’s moving to a new apartment in june outside of downtown that offers dedicated parking spot for “only” $150/month. Much cheaper rent plus she just got a nice raise so it makes sense.
That was for something used. But she pilly so I expect budget creep.
Sad that leasing stinks now. Being reduced to (an admittedly nice) 3 YO rogue sport (CPO which is pretty generous on those) is sad. Would be a good fit for her needs though.
I'm guessing the least price EV vehicle out there is either the Chevy Bolt or the Nissan Leaf. Just wondering if one can really get either for around the $30K price point? I'm still not comfortable spending much over that amount on anything honestly
NARRATOR - $30K in 2022 dollars is about $22K in 2010 dollars. FWIW.

There’s no limit by law in MA but I hear the average is about $350. That might not be valid any longer with the crazy market. You could have her buy in NY where the doc fee is capped at $75 and then reregister in MA. Sales tax in NY is 7-8% upstate but if I remember correctly they charged based on where the address of the buyer is located.
For a new car the dealer should be able to do the MA registration for her. One of my former coworkers also worked for a dealer chain and one of his duties was registering cars sold by the NY dealer for VT buyers. He would drive over to VT about once a week and stand in line with multiple titles.

If I was up by you already it could make sense. Just going to be much easier logistically to buy local.
So far I sent a bunch of affordable options. She did not perk up until got to a Tucson SEL with lots of goodies. Lease was not terrible. Minimal DAS and $390ish per month. Better than dumping a big DP into an older car probably.

Agree - sub $400 is the new sub $300 monthly payment.

Hi, Stick: Probably answered already, but: Car will be registered in MA, so 6.25% sales tax. MA does allow tax charged less trade-in value, if applicable Doc fees, ~$499. YMMV Registration/title, ~$135 Inspection: $35
And, of course, annual property/excise taxes! And, no, there is no blinker tax. So, to prove she's not a local, she may use them liberally without fear of financial consequence.

Makes sense with interest rates going up. I don’t know how anyone is leasing these days unless they are rolling huge positive equity forward. The deals just aren’t there.
I know not everyone chases leases the way we do here, but on some higher dollar vehicles the new payments (all things being equal) can be $250-300 a month higher.

Many folks who have leases that are ending are shocked at how much the payment has gone up for basically the same car.
Am working with a member on a Guilia lease; the lease on their 2019 Guilia is ending and they have over $7K in positive equity. However, the net payment is still going up roughly $50/mo.
I haven't seen a good lease deal in a few months. People are either sucking it up and paying more, or looking more closely into financing.

Thanks. Did not realize there was PPT too. Afraid to ask how much that is!
Also, do you know if she needs a MA DL to register it? I assume so. Currently still with a NJ DL at our address. She moved so often it never made sense to change it!

I was in that boat in 2008... Had a $400/month subsidized Audi A4 lease that was ending. And am now in the same boat with the Tundra. It's almost comical that has happened both of the two times I have leased.

The MA state excise mil rate is $25, based upon assessed value (which I believe is initially 60% of msrp; slides as the car ages to a minimum). I don't believe she would need a MA license to register, but she will need a valid DL and proof of insurance. It’s not a pretty picture with rent, car leases payments, house prices, interest rates, etc. all increasing beyond the means of many. I’m afraid a good number of folks will find they’ve over extended the ability to pay their financial obligations. Harsh reality.

It is .... Moonstone Grey with the grey interior and AWD.
Didn't the wife and stepdaughter want blue? Sounds like a setup for a breld-like ownership period.
Funny story about the color.
The demo vehicle at the dealer was blue over black, which was good because blue was indeed their first choice.
But, when she saw it in person, the stepdaughter thought the blue was "too bright", and didn't like it. She wanted the grey interior, and when she discovered she could get it with the moonstone exterior, she flipped her opinion.
I suspect her mind was clouded by the denim blue of the Volvo, which is a lovely shade. The VW blue reminded her too much of the bright blue '05 VUE we owned, I suspect.
No worries. Since we placed an order, we got exactly what we wanted.
The MINI celebrated its 8th birthday with us this month, so I suspect we'll keep the VW just as long.
I was talking with my sister about all of this today, and she presented me with an interesting idea - sell the MINI now, while prices are relatively high, and the girls can use the Outback as the interim vehicle until the VW arrives.
And what about me, you ask? She suggested I grab my mom's Sonata and drive it back to Colorado and use it as the spare vehicle. My sister currently has a fleet of 5 cars for 4 drivers (her oldest son is in Japan for the next year, teaching middle school English), and getting one out of the driveway would be a net benefit for her.
Something to consider. The Sonata has a whopping 45,000 miles on it, and my sister has taken care of a lot of the maintenance and repair items in the almost two years she's had it. When the VW shows up, we sell the Hyundai and I'd go back to driving the Subaru.
Well, I suspect the Mini is worth a whole lot more now than it will be in 12 months time, so that might make a lot of sense if you can get an essentially free occasional-use vehicle for yourself.
In terms of id.4 availability, up here in Canada it is only available currently in B.C., with supposed availability soon in Ontario, and for the rest of us the website says it won’t be available nationwide until the Chattanooga plant starts producing 2023 models.

That's my thinking, as well. Sell at the top of the market, and bank the money in the meantime.
Bummer that the ID.4 isn't available nationwide in Canada. I found that the same is true of the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid here in the US, which is available in only 6 states.

If you're not using it much anyway, it is just depreciating if you keep it. Plus, I like the idea of a visit to the sister and a short road trip in the Sonata.
