I've picked out a new 2013 Honda CR-V EXL w/ nav and will most likely close the deal tomorrow. The price is tentatively set and trade evaluated. I'll miss the 'lil '07 CR-V (67,000 miles) but they have made some nice improvements on the 2013. I like the spring-loaded fold down rear seats. With just a pull of a lever, the seats will fold down and lay almost flat. I noticed the power steering is softer and the car is quieter (typical of a new car, right?).
I'm picking the Alabaster Silver with black leather. Since we use this vehicle to be towed behind the motorhome, I needed a fairly light color and there aren't that many offered by Honda. Really, just the white or silver are the 'light' colors. Since we have 3 white cars already, I thought something different would be better even though it's not the perfect match behind the motorhome. Our gold Honda (Borrego Beige) was a better match but gold is not offered in the new line-up.
I also wanted a darker interior as our gold Honda had beige leather. I really use the vehicle as a 'truck' carrying my bike, traveling with luggage, throwing stuff in the back so I wanted dark this time.
So, there is a 99% chance my CCBA card will be punched tomorrow unless there are some misunderstandings that I'm not aware of. Our young salesman is super nice so I hope everything goes smoothly.

Oldfarmer, Honda CR-V's are towable four down without and special modifications to the drive train. I will have to have a base plate installed on the front and an emergency braking system.
I'll have the M & G braking system installed (same as I have on the '07) which allows the car to automatically brake if it were to ever 'get loose' from the motorhome. This system attaches to the master brake cylinder and allows the air brakes on the coach to activate the tow vehicles brakes at the same pressure. So, the Honda will never push me in an emergency stop.
Not all Honda's are towable four down. I know the Fit is OK.
To set the Honda for towing, you start the car, move the lever from P, R, N, D, 2, 1 (stopping a few seconds in each gear) then back up to N and stop. If I were to go to R, I would have to start the sequence over again. Then turn the key back to the accessory position and it's ready to go. The miles do not add up when towing.
The car manual states (if I remember correctly) to start the Honda after every 6 hrs. of towing and 800 miles. I never tow more than 400 miles in a day and I'll start the car and run through the gears at our lunch stop. So, I'm usually well within the limits of lubing the transmission for towing.
I will probably need to have a switch installed to disconnect the Navigation/Radio fuse like I did on the '07. When the key is in the accessory position, the Nav/Radio is still 'on' and will run down the battery. Trying to remove the fuse is very difficult as it is tiny and hard to get to.

PS. The '07 Honda has almost 67,000 (of driving) and an additional 56,000 miles of towing (123,000 miles on the chassis).

Yeah, ideally, I could sell it to someone in Philly, Jersey or NYC... and, drop it off on the way...
This would be about an $11K-$12K upgrade in price, but I'd get a 3-year newer car, with 60K less miles.. and 65 HP more.. :surprise:
Plus, it's pretty much optioned exactly as I would want one (color, leather color and sport, stick, heated seats).. I have to admit, though.... I generally only look at the 128i, because of lower cost, higher MPG, and lower repair/maintenance costs going forward... but, this one sure seems nice.. More power is better, right?
I'm not really worried about Sandy, unless those pictures are old... Don't think you could get a car cleaned up that quickly... Refreshing to see a car from NYC that doesn't have the caveat, "Parked on streets of NYC, so expect the usual damage".
My schedule wouldn't allow me to fly up there until after New Years, though...
The relationship between a teen girl and her car is quite a bit different than a teen boy's. I had only sons and they barely care what kind of car they drive. They treat them as tools to get them places. I never heard of a boy naming a car.
My son's friend the car scrapper asked if he could park one of his junks at the farm over the weekend as the crusher was closed. It was a 2000 Saturn SL1.
I was looking at it and I noticed that the headliner was covered with I'm guessing "girl" comments in magic-marker. Stuff like "I love Goolie 4 ever" and "Justin is hott". Hundreds of notations. This was evidently the car of someone's little princess.
Found the gender difference interesting. When I was a teen our cars might be missing a fender and burned more oil than gas but if you marked it up there would be a fist fight.

just showed my daughter a picture of the cabrio (mentioned it to her before). she said it was a "cutie". Might have to call about it tomorrow if the rain stops.
When my brother was in college[mid 60's], he had an old Studebaker to drive from Greensburg to Phillipe W.V. The beast used a quart of oil every 50 miles so he kept the trunk full of gallon jugs of who knows what. He took a bunch of leftover paint spray cans and house paint and turned it into a rainbow mobile which made our Dad furious. Mission accomplished.
The Sierra had a pass side low beam go out so I figured why not replace both low beams with some new silver stars. Yeah, 3 hours later, one trip to the dealer for a broken bolt that cost $10, a scraped up finger, some not nice words to the truck, and I was seriously questioning my decision.
The pass side wasn't too horrible, a little tough due to a short harness. The driver's side.....I'd like to smack whoever decided on that design. We had to take out the battery, the battery plate, unbolt the windshield washer bottle, and it was still all I could do to get my small hands in there to pull the old bulb out and replace it.
While putting everything back together had a special bolt on the neg battery cable break, of course it's not available aftermarket. Got lucky that one GM parts dept was open and had one in stock.
High beams or DRLs better not even THINK about going out!!!
Now to install a block heater in the Yaris, which I'm sure will be much easier.
Yeah, I remember the DRL's in my Suburban being a pain to change, particularly on the battery side. Plus they seemed to burn out every 3 mos. I think on the Suburban, I could turn a latch which allowed the whole light assembly to be removed, then I could reach the DRL bulb.
I guess you should have changed all of the bulbs while you were in there;)
I guess you should have changed all of the bulbs while you were in there;)
I thought about it but hubby convinced me not to. The high beams look like they might be doable without dismantling 1/2 the truck. I haven't seen where the DRL bulbs are yet.
I can say that installing the block heater on the Yaris was faster and easier than replacing headlight bulbs on the Sierra.
The relationship between a teen girl and her car is quite a bit different than a teen boy's. I had only sons and they barely care what kind of car they drive. They treat them as tools to get them places. I never heard of a boy naming a car.
That's the truth! My son was perfectly happy with the 95 Escort, he took care of it, didn't trash it, and in return it got him around reliably. He could care less that it was a $1000 car. My daughter wouldn't hear of driving that car. So, we bought her the light blue '11 Toyota Yaris which she has named Smurfette.
I think you need to go and look at the Volvo wagon. It won't last long at that price if it is as described.
Love the old school pop-up NAV. Nice conversation piece, 11 year old maps in our area won't get you far. My 2012 can't find places that have been there for 3 years!
I won't even consider a car that a wanna-be pimp or drug dealer has owned, so those wheels take it out of contention. I also take a pass if an owner advertises that his BMW has a V6.

That "Vovlo" Cross Country wagon with the "V6" engine is cheap if it's truly in good condition. I'm assuming it's really a 2.4/2.5 liter turbo five cylinder. Considering its age, it probably needs a timing belt kit.
They have the price listed on Autotrader; I believe it is $15,000. EA is always high, but they get hard to find low mileage cars. A friend was helping a guy find a low mileage E39 M5. One popped up on Autotrader in PA and my friend called less than six hours after it was first posted. EA had already bought it... :surprise:

I have learned that you do GET what you pay for, but just don't want to get ripped off either. Better to buy that car for $15,000 than on for $7500 that needs $3K - $4K worth of work to get it back to reliable DD status!
2001 Prelude Type SH, 2022 Highlander XLE AWD, 2025 Camry SE AWD
Exactly; EA's prices on E36 M3s are above average, but if you read the ad you will usually find that they are 1 or 2 owner cars and that EA has replaced the major failure-prone parts of the suspension and cooling system. You can pay 50% of EA's price but in most cases you will get a car with over 140K on the clock, and little to no service history. Ya' pays yer money...

In certain cases you are probably better off just paying the premium for a car that has ultra low miles and been gone over. IMHO its a pay me now or pay me later sort of thing.
it is the 2.4l LPT in that car. I never assume the owner has a clue about those details. And Fintail, the nav is factory old school.
price does seem cheap, but the ad bothers me for some reason. Though does claim to be original owner. I wonder if the issue is they learned that the tranny or AWD system are on the way out, and are looking to bail? Still, for a 1 owner loaded model with 83K on it, $3,100 is cheap.
I feel bad though, since the poor owner works 7 days a week, and has to take time of to show it!
around here, everything takes it share of potholes. Roads are horrid. One reason I stay away from low profile tires, and actually tried to avoid a SP car when I was looking at BMWs.
today was day 1 of the actual plan (to recap, my daughter got her license last Friday on her 2nd try, and can now drive solo). Over the weekend, she was able to go out a few places on her own, and it was nice that I did not have to drive over to her boyfriend's house at 11:00 to pick her up. But, no real impact since the Volvo was around and I was mostly out with my wife in her car.
today though, I am "stranded" at home, since the kid took the Volvo to school and the wife went into the office. I feel so naked without a car here (not that I really have anyplace to go, but still, what if I wanted to?). And they both realized me not having a car can be a drag.
my wife especially is seeing this be an inconvenience to her (and we all know, that is not likely to end well ). So she was commenting today that I really need to get another car for me or the kid, something cheap so we can asign her to that for insurance purposes.
So I guess I hae my marching orders! I think we can probably make it through the end of the year though, but after that it could be an issue. I really wish I had off street parking for another car that did not block the garage. That is a real hassle.
because you can get a pretty good deal on a Buick of grand marquis.
I just cracked up because I have one of each! :surprise:
Did you ever think about Swap-a-Lease or Lease trader? Maybe snatch something up with a year or two left? It wouldn't require much (if any) cash outlay and maybe find something a bit over-miles that may have a seller incentive. With the little you drive it would even-out.
I always wondered how that swap lease really works. On that car, other than the shorter term, not sure what I would be gaining. It looks to be about the same price/month I could do on a brand new one. Plus I wonder if that unit is going to get hit with turn-in costs (key scratch, bumper damage, etc.). And are there costs to do the swap?
so if I was to lease something along those lines, why not just go brand spanking new for the same price, and have it to enjoy for an extra 20 months?
though could be a good deal to buy at the end depending on the residual.
I just assumed that this process only really made sense if you were saving money (say, the seller put a lot of cash down).
and if I did get one of these, pretty sure it would not be bright red!
though hey, it gives me an excuse to stop and drive one this week...
I just assumed that this process only really made sense if you were saving money
Well, as a CCB, you ARE saving money because your commitment is only, say, 16 months (for that Fiat), instead of 36! Honestly, after sixteen months, you'd be ready for something different anyway. :P
2018 Subaru Crosstrek, 2014 Audi Q7 TDI, 2013 Subaru Forester, 2013 Ford F250 Lariat D, 1976 Ford F250, 1969 Chevrolet C20, 1969 Ford Econoline 100
I just assumed that this process only really made sense if you were saving money (say, the seller put a lot of cash down).
This! Before I leased the LaCrosse someone had a fully loaded MKS near 50K sticker and the lease payment was $450/month. He just wanted out and said he put 7K down (why, I will never know). It was swiped up quickly, before I had time to react.
I don't think there are fees to the buyer unless the seller states so.
We all knew you were going to get a car at some point. What's your budget? We'll scour the web looking for some low mileage, one owner, OCD maintained gems for you to look at;)
2001 Prelude Type SH, 2022 Highlander XLE AWD, 2025 Camry SE AWD
Budget? well, lets see. figure out what those OCD gems are going to cost, then take about 20% of that, round down, and I think we are there!
seriously, I don't have a strict budget. As low as possible, and I am really trying to find something that, unless it is purely a fun toy, is cheap enough to not need comp/collision insurance (so I can assign my daughter to it).
Figure, roughly, 3K or below. But I may have to wait until after the holidays to see how much is actually available, since that will also cover our final tuition payment for my son.
I figured by know Qbrozen would have been begging me to take his S70 off his hands, though it sounds more likely he wants to pawn off an aging benz instead!
I can't motivate myself to go to a town 30 minutes away to look at a car, and you want me to go down to Tampa for one? You know how far it is from Philly?
Now, if you want to go pick something up, drive it here, then pick me up for the last leg up to amsterdam, we might be able to work some thing out!
Or maybe I should just make an offer on your Vette? That baby would probably freak my wife out. not as much as the Vandura though.
"Figure, roughly, 3K or below. But I may have to wait until after the holidays to see how much is actually available, since that will also cover our final tuition payment for my son. "
Earth to Stickguy: Buy your car now, now, now. From a private owner, you'll have a little extra time in January, maybe, but the dealers all have their high holy days starting, basically, with Christmas.
Tax season is coming, that's whene America gets their income tax returns, aka the only time when most low-income people have cash in their pockets.
And $3k cars become $4 cars in the blink of an eye. I learned this from a local car dealer, and have had it corroborated many times, most vocally by Steven Lang over on ttac dot com.
You want a cheap car, late fall is the time, maybe up to Christmas, when nobody's buying.

Well, as a CCB, you ARE saving money because your commitment is only, say, 16 months (for that Fiat), instead of 36! Honestly, after sixteen months, you'd be ready for something different anyway. :P
This! Before I leased the LaCrosse someone had a fully loaded MKS near 50K sticker and the lease payment was $450/month. He just wanted out and said he put 7K down (why, I will never know). It was swiped up quickly, before I had time to react.
I don't think there are fees to the buyer unless the seller states so.

seriously, I don't have a strict budget.

Or maybe I should just make an offer on your Vette? That baby would probably freak my wife out. not as much as the Vandura though.

Yeah, head gasket problems I'm told. Too bad the seller doesn't say. I hate it when CL ads don't give important info.

Ha ha if you want to give me $3k for that rust bucket, you've got a deal.
It's about 20 hours driving time to Tampa from upstate so from Philly you could do it in 15. Short hop.

Shop like the wind.
