if I buy a car off the lot that has been sitting around for a while (and I know these have), should I ask the service dept. to flash the ECU before taking delivery or should I not worry about the power loss/gimp mode issue until/unless I have a problem?
IMO, this issue needs to be addressed even before signing on the dotted line. On your freeway testdrive, have the vehicle flashed first before testdriving.
Is decent 91 octane gas (I usually go for Chevron when I can find it) going to be sufficient for this car, or is it going to cause noticeable power loss or other issues if the computer thinks the gas is inferior?
* This vehicle is designed to use 93 octane (AKI) or higher gasoline for best performance. If 93 octane (AKI) is not available, 91 or 92 octane (AKI) gasoline can be used. In case 91 or 92 octane (AKI) is not available, gasoline as low as 87 octane (AKI) can be used temporarily for emergency purposes. Use of gasoline lower than 93 octane (AKI) can decrease performance during its use.
IMO, this issue needs to be addressed even before signing on the dotted line. On your freeway testdrive, have the vehicle flashed first before testdriving.
Given my tight timeline, I think the former suggestion is valid -- I'll make the flash a condition of sale. I'll probably test drive the floor model on the freeway and briefly test the actual vehicle I'm being before close the deal.
Per MazdaSpeed6 Features and Specifications
I've seen this official spec before, but I'm looking for some real-world experience here. I get the sense from most posts I've read from people have tried 91 and 93 in their MS6 that the difference isn't huge until you go below 91 (which is clearly a no-no). Any more input from experience here?
Hi. I've been reading this forum for awhile and finally decided to join in the fun. I've had my MS6 since late March and have over 5K on it. I have never had a lack of power issue. I use Premium that is available here in Oregon(91-92). I have driven hard, fully loaded through the Cascade gorge, etc. Never a problem. Will I take the vehicle in to have it flashed? Maybe. Being an electronics engineer, I typicaly don't do every "software upgrade" that comes along unless it fixes a problem that I've experienced. This has been an awsome car so far. The clutch is a bit touchy, but I've gotten used to it. Buy it and enjoy it! Zoomtoy
I been driving a Mazdaspeed6 for 7 months now, and have racked up over 10,000 miles of pure driving joy so far. I did have the powerloss problem on my car a handful of times, but it was fixed by the PCM reflash 2 months ago. I have not had any issues with engine performance since.
The powerloss issue has escalated into an official "recall" so I would imagine that the dealer should take care of it. You might just want to verify with the dealer that this has already been done or will be done prior to delivery.
The car runs just fine on 91 octane. Using 91 octane (vs. 93) doesn't cause an "problems" with the car, you just won't realize what you're missing out on. However, I did experiment once by adding a 1/2-tank of 100-octane race gas (available only at select fuel stations) (at $6.99/gallon!) and the power difference was phenomenal. When I refilled with 91, the car definitely felt less peppy.
That being said, the MS6 is fast! It really pulls in all gears, even in 6th gear at 80mph, it accelerates effortlessly.
As far as materials, I think they're pretty good for a non-luxury brand. I have a GT-trim model with white/black leather seats, and it's very comfortable to drive, although the sporty suspension lets you feel more of the road than, say, a Camry. There are a lot of nice features that you don't usually find on non-luxury brands: all 4 auto-up/down windows, when you're outside the car, the windows roll down when you hold down the unlock button on the remote (useful on hot days!), advanced keyless entry and start (GT trim only), HID headlamps with manual leveling feature, to name a few.
The last time I had an emotional connection with a car was 10 years ago, when I owned a 92 Sentra SE-R. The MS6 has definitely started to steal my heart!
Probably the only downside to owning the car is that it doesn't get the greatest fuel economy. I average only about 22mpg mixed city/highway, which offers a range of only 320 miles. At today's pump prices, it digs deeply into the wallet. But that's the price you pay for performance.
I have owned my Speed6 since April and have just under 6000miles. I love this car! Period! It's the most exciting car I have owned. 91 is all i use living in So Cal. That still puts plenty of power on the pavement.
I have found that it does have little rattles and that comes from the stiff suspension. The interior materials are up to par with the Japanese automakers.
Haven't experienced the loss of pwr issue, but since I have a dealer close to me, I will take it in anyway....hope this helps!
Maybe I'll get a GT after all - $24.1K . Sport would be $22.3K.
Thank God US drivers are so lame. I can hear the average BubbaJoe now: What do you mean it's a four cylinder? No automatic? Are you serious?? These seats are a little, ummm, tight....Ironically, the Speed6 was totally off my radar until I saw one in front of a SAM'S CLUB as part of their car buying service!
Looks like I'll have an '02 WRX wagon for sale soon. Are there any other Speed6 owners who are former WRX owners willing to share a comparison?
After much research, I bought an MS6 today. The best news: among the many MS6s my dealer had on the lot, one of the two platinum GTs I wanted has a VIN that falls outside of the recall range -- it must have been produced after April 2006 based on this Mazda document: http://forum.mazda6tech.com/viewtopic.php?p=46372#46372
I can definitely say this MS6 drives better than the original model I test drove earlier this week. It feels less jumpy, much smoother -- the power doesn't come on as alarmingly, but it's plenty fast.
In any event, I couldn't be happier. I got a *great* price for my R32 (a great car, but the resale values forced my hand) and a similarly excellent deal on the GT. If you live in SoCal, go see Bob Nameche at Star Mazda -- he's a real class act.
I've only driven the car ~20 miles and I've already adjusted to the hair-trigger clutch (errr...mostly). As much as I liked my R32 and it's razor-sharp responses, the harsh ride and freeway noise grew tiresome. Coming from the R32, the Mazda gives up a little in handling and immediacy, but it is much more comfortable -- better ride, better isolation, firmer chassis with better damping. To me, it feels much more like a European car than any Japanese car I've ever driven (kind of A4-ish). I've owned two turbocharged cars before and I forgot how easy it is to be caught off guard when trying to accelerate from 1,500-2,000 RPM. It's like one Mississippi, two Mississippi, whoooosh! The R32's strongest suit was its completely balanced engine that pulls evenly all through the range. Still, no regrets.
One last note on octane: the quick tips guide that comes with the car states: "To get maximum performance from your turbocharged engine, take note of the following: Use 91-93 octane premium unleaded gasoline ONLY, extra fuel additives are NOT recommended."
No mods planned since it's a 2-year lease. I'm having the windows tinnted today, but that's it! What are you doing / have you done with yours? Coming from the VW world, I'm familiar with the VW mods, but I don't know what people do to MS6s (aside from the obvious wheels, etc).
I leased mine to, 3yrs. But I think I will finally keep a car. I going to buy it at the end of the lease so mods will be done. One at a time though.
No rims, I like the stock wheels and the sleeper look. But I'm thinking of the Magnaflow Catback and they make a MAZDASPEED CAI(I here it's made by AEM. Maybe a tubotimer and a blowoff valve. That would be it for perfomance mods.
Appearance, I just want to change the yellow/orange side markers to clear ones. Those are somewhat hard to come by...
Hello all, I am thinking about purchasing a 06 MS6 Sport (titanium gray) for $22,800. Is this a good price? Also, how often do the tireswear out? This will be first car that I would own with 18" rims and I was wondering if anyone thinks that these rims are prone to damage and bridgestone r-rated tires might wear out under 20,000 miles or so (I've heard this is true on Subaru WRX STi BBS rims/tires). Also, how often do you guys change your oil? And is synthetic oil recommended? Or will it be okay with synthetic/dyno blend?
I know these are a lot of questions, but I just wanted make sure all questions are anwered before I jumped onto the deal. I was originally going to get a Mazda 6 V6 hatchback, but when I realised that I can pick uo this supercar for practically nothing, I changed mind! Thank you so much for all your input.
That is an excellent price especially if that is including dealer 'adds' already (like tinted windows and the like). I got mine for $21888 plus adds = $22750 and I think that's the lowest someone has posted getting so far. I've had quite a few things fixed so far but they've all been minor (headlight, golfball dent from course near dealership, etc.) and I had them do the ECM update for the recall "performance issue". Excellent car, not that good of gas mileage though. "corners like it's on rails"
Hey interesting observation, let me know if anyone else has noticed this. I drove my MS6 for a week "in-town" driving and got about 22mpg, I then got the ECM updated for the performance "issue" hoping not to be plagued in the future by any problems. I have now driven another week in the car on the freeway to and from work and am getting 20mpg (and yes that is keeping it at about 75mph to try to get better mileage). Am I going nuts? Quarter of a tank and 80 miles, that doesn't seem right. Anyone else have that issue?
Hey all, well I'm looking into getting out of my 3 and into an MS6 but I have questions, first real world mpg? what type of mileage are you all getting? I drive 40 miles over a twisting mountain highway (highway17 for those who know Nor Cal) good part is I have to drive back at night making it fun. My 3 only gets about 25 mpg or less so I figure I can take a small hit on mpg but nothing to big as the price of gas here in Calif is getting way high. I dont drive like a manic either and basically pretty conservative on how I drive hopefully this helps too. Last 2 questions fuel type is premuim required or recommended as the salesman told me regular is what is used, next the dashboard lights can they be changed I dont like the reddish orange look? please hurry too as I got the guy down to 22,000 on a sport model
Yes, premium (91) is required. You'll get lower fuel economy and lower performance with regular (87) or mid-grade (89).
If you're only getting 25mpg in your 3, you'll likely see fuel economy around 20mpg over Hwy17. I drive 75 miles a day between Los Gatos and San Mateo via 85/101 or 85/280, averaging about 22mpg with spirited driving. Hwy 17 begs the car to stretch its legs. If you drive agressively for most of the trip, expect 18-20mpg.
And as soon as you buy the car, start budgeting for tires (especially since you're driving over the hill). I've put a little under 11K miles on it since the end of January, and I'd say that the tires will have to be replaced prior to the rainy season.
Finally, the orange dash lighting cannot be cheaply changed to another color.
Thank you for the quick response, I drive about 75 miles a day too from Santa Cruz to Sunnyvale, I do have to drive a little slower with the traffic over 17 but late at night when I get off work the speed limit is......FUN!!! Is this your daily driver?
Well, I just filled up my first tank when it was 3/4 empty and it looks like I averaged ~19MPG. Not great, but no worse than my R32.
I've mostly driven mellow (mostly to and from work the first week), but I also took several opportunities to wind things out and learn the car in some local twisties. It also took some time to adjust to the clutch, so I'm sure that didn't help either.
My wife is taking the car to work tomorrow, so that might help! I predict 20MPG for my second tank. 4 cyclinder or not, we're talking 274 HP in a 3,600-3,700 pound car.
I am fixing to bite the bullet and buy the Mazdaspeed 6 today. I got the dealer down to $21,885 on a titanium gray MS6 Sport with no other options but wheel locks and cargo net. He is also throwing in a 12 year-125,000 mile powertrain warranty to sweeten the deal. However, he is offering 72mos. financing through Mazda America Credit at 8% annual interest! Can I do better than 8%? Will 7.2% possible through MAC?
Really? Barely 11K on the tires and already ready to replace tires? I can afford the gas mileage on MS6, but if tires have to be replaced around 20k, I should be looking at another ride...Has anyone here gotten a new set of tires here under 20,000K?
However, he is offering 72mos. financing through Mazda America Credit at 8% annual interest! Can I do better than 8%? Will 7.2% possible through MAC?
Mac's rates are higher than most banks...but if you go with an outside bank/finance source you will give up the $1000 mac rebate. Depending on how much you finance even 1-2% less might be a higher payment without the mac cash reabte.
run the numbers and see if going to an outside bank with a lower rate works.
You can and probably should get something more all-season once you wear out the original tires on the MS6 if you plan to drive any snow. There are some other good choices that are closer to $125 per tire if you check out something like Pirelli PZero Nero M&S in 215/45R18. Another trick is to move up to 225 as those are cheaper because they are more common. You will get one cm more width and about 0.45 cm of extra height...
Are you sure they are throwing in 125k/12year warranty for free and at sub $22k price? That sounds too good to be true!
FYI you can get 5.74% APR at penfed! That also includes refis!
Here's a quick question for you on the Rules of the Road. While reading the rule about Posts about dealers, I came across the rule about No "Email Me" or Email Addresses in Posts. I understand what it's getting at, but what if you want someone to contact you about a topic that is forbidden in the forums?
Everyone can make their email address public in their profiles. But understand that if you can't use the Forums to do certain things, you also can't use the Forums to ask people to email you for those things.
If you (or anyone) has any more questions, just drop me an email. I don't want to disrupt this discussion.
Yes, the MS6 is my daily driver. Much more fuel efficient than my 13mpg modified 4x4 SUV, which is reserved for off-road camping trips or Home Depot runs.
Really? Barely 11K on the tires and already ready to replace tires
Yeah, well this car begs to be driven hard, corner hard, and I almost always oblige. I'm sure if you put a more conservative driver behind the wheel, you could extend the life of tires. The OEM Bridgestone RE050A's are a pretty soft-rubber grippy summer performance tire, so yeah, they aren't expected to last too long, certainly not 30-40K miles. If you want to get a longer-lasting tire, expect lower performance (i.e. poorer cornerning and traction).
Well, I bit the bullet and bought a 2006 Titanium Gray Mazdaspeed 6 sport this Friday. I ended up getting final price of $22,000 plus TT&L as well as $850 more for my trade (and 7.45% MAC finaincg for 72 months)! This is absolutley the best performing car that I've ever owned. I'd like to thank everyone for their input in this forum. Also, service manger said that Bridgestone tires on MS6 could last up to 40K miles as long as they are balanced and rotated every 7500 miles or so. :shades: What are some good Mazdaspeed 6 enthusiasts websites out there? Can you get door moldings as an accessory through Mazda? I hate to get dings on my new car...
I was also offered $22K+TTL for a Liquid Platinum MS6 Sport on the first dealer offer. Seems like I can ask for more but the MAC financing rates seem to be high. I heard that the loan needs to be opened for about 90 days before paying off to keep the $1000 MAC incentive. It may be better to use a HELOC at these rates so that interest can be used as a possible tax deduction. That is, if rates do not keep going higher.
service manger said that Bridgestone tires on MS6 could last up to 40K miles as long as they are balanced and rotated every 7500 miles or so.
Hahaha, yeah, but that would also require that you drive your new 274HP sport sedan like a Kia Sportage. Why buy an MS6 if you're not going to drive it?
It's 7.6% at 72 months, $416 a month. No down payment, but my BMW 325i as a trade. The delaership in town also threw in a 12 year, 125,000 mile limited powertrain warranty!
Wow!! Great deal!! I love my car but it seems like I should have waited and would have saved 4k. Oh well, I got a great deal at the time so I can't complain. I'm looking for some new wheels and will add some all season tires. Just can't decide what kind of wheels to get.
It's World Car Mazda in San Antonio, TX. Price that I paid was near $22,800, but they did give me another $1000 towards my trade, so $22K for MS6 sport is very possible with these guys. The extended warranty is good on every car they sell. And it covers very extensive and comprehensive powertrain features such as all-wheel-drive components as well as factory installed turbochargers. Unfortunately, the warranty service is only available on any World car Mazda (the have three in San Antonio), but void at other Mazda dealerships nationwide. If you live in Texas, this warranty is absolutely a steal, since it is $0 deductible.
They have four other MS6 sprts sitting on the lot. Two silvers and a black, as well as Titanium gray and cherry red Grand Touring MS6 as well.
If you live anywhere near Texas, these guys are worth a try!
Has anyone had a problem with their MS6 backfiring? I have 5600 miles on mine and have had no issues at all. Today I decided to do a really hard launch, which I haven't tried before. DSC off, reved up to 2500-3000 rpm, then dropped the cluch and punched it. BANG! huge backfire then it took off. I aborted my "run" and drove around for a bit. Still had normal power (no slug mode). Any ideas?
Does anyone know the code to reset the auto up/down on the power windows. I had my dealer reset it once, but don't want to bother them with it again. Thanks in advance.
I've heard of cars backfiring, but what exactly is that? More of a description please. At times when I take off and I'm pushing over 4-5k rpm, it kinds feels like the MS6 jerks or kinds pops.
Is that what is happening to you? Thanks for the help.
traditionally, backfiring has been caused by an accumulation of unburned fuel in the exhaust system that ignites. On carbuerated cars, backfire may also happen through the intake system. Usually there is something majorly wrong with the tuning or mechanical function of the car (timing, carberation, missing, valve sticking or not seating, etc.).
I was curious to know what everyone used as shift points when they upshifted through the gears. I have found the best shift points for accerration to be around 3500 RPM. If you look in the owners manual it calls for:
1 to 2 19mph 2 to 3 29mph 3 to 4 37mph 4 to 5 42mph 5 to 6 50mph
I think the shift points for 5th and 6th look kinda low. The reason why is because in 6th on the highway everything is fine if I'm running 65mph or over in 6th. If it drops below 65mph I start getting a osculating vibration. This starts to happen the speed drops below 2500RPM or 65mph. I don't notice a movement in the RPM needle or anything vibration from the steering wheel or gear shift knob.
I have over 11,000 miles on my MS6, and it has backfired a handful of times throughout its life, under varying circumstances, sometimes between hard upshifts, sometimes after cruising for a while then downshifting and punching it. It has backfired through both the intake and exhaust. I haven't ever bothered to take it in, because it's not repeatable, and I don't know how the dealer would be able to fix a problem they cannot reproduce.
I would expect 10-15k miles out of 18s on a performance sedan. Had a few cars with 18s and I rarely see north of 12k miles on a set. Price of a performance sedan...
I guess I'm kind of glad to here someone else has experienced this on their MS6 as well. I am disappointed though. I don't know if it was through the intake or exhast, but it was one heck of a bang!! I tried the same thing today but reved up a itle higher. this time I got a nice tirechirp and no backfire. Won't be doing this anytime soon--to hard on a vehicle, but I had to try it. Got my official recall notice for the power-loss issue. I don't know if I want to do it. Has anyone noticed any downside to the update?
Well I finally took the plunge on a white sport MS6 and " I LIKE IT " it's hard to believe there's only a 4 banger in the engine compartment. But I'm doing the inital break-in period and will wait until the paving over the twistie's is done before the "FUN" really starts

Here's a quick question for you on the Rules of the Road. While reading the rule about Posts about dealers, I came across the rule about No "Email Me" or Email Addresses in Posts. I understand what it's getting at, but what if you want someone to contact you about a topic that is forbidden in the forums?
If you (or anyone) has any more questions, just drop me an email. I don't want to disrupt this discussion.
Hahaha, yeah, but that would also require that you drive your new 274HP sport sedan like a Kia Sportage. Why buy an MS6 if you're not going to drive it?
The delaership in town also threw in a 12 year, 125,000 mile limited powertrain warranty!
They have four other MS6 sprts sitting on the lot. Two silvers and a black, as well as Titanium gray and cherry red Grand Touring MS6 as well.
If you live anywhere near Texas, these guys are worth a try!
Thanks in advance.
Is that what is happening to you? Thanks for the help.
In this day and age, one rarely hears a backfire.

1 to 2 19mph
2 to 3 29mph
3 to 4 37mph
4 to 5 42mph
5 to 6 50mph
I think the shift points for 5th and 6th look kinda low. The reason why is because in 6th on the highway everything is fine if I'm running 65mph or over in 6th. If it drops below 65mph I start getting a osculating vibration. This starts to happen the speed drops below 2500RPM or 65mph. I don't notice a movement in the RPM needle or anything vibration from the steering wheel or gear shift knob.
Has anyone experienced this??
Got my official recall notice for the power-loss issue. I don't know if I want to do it. Has anyone noticed any downside to the update?
