Many people have mentioned to me I should vary speed/rpm for the first 1000 miles, but I am not entirely sure why this is good for the engine. Any particular reason?

Another question. the mileage I am getting out of one gallon is miserable now, around 23 with mixed highway and local. Is it because of the break-in period? Should I expect to get more MPG after the first 1000 miles?

As oil is fluid it is subject to centrifugal forces as such
it is desirable to have all parts of a bearing surface
well lubricated. If a steady speed is held the oil would
mainly be on one part of the bearing so by varying the speed the oil moves around all over the surface. If you
can damage an engine by reving it too soon I wander about
fun cars such as the tC when a hot rodder kid takes it for
a test drive but doesn't buy it then some unsuspecting
person buys it.I guess that is why they only warranty
    them a short time.

Did you ever resolve this? I've got a rattle too matching the same description in a 2006 tC

Going back to the shop Monday for the second stereo replacement since I got the car in July 2004. CD player will not eject CD and makes a loud noise. Dealership said it was a bad unit.

Not surprised, I had to have a couple replaced as well, same exact problem. Pioneer isn't that great of quality when it comes to CD mechanisms. Hope you get a good one now! :)

    Hi all,

I just recently bought a 2006 Scion tC. The car has been driven for about a month and it has been making clunking noise. I brought the car in. I test drove it with them and they concluded that the noise was made by the defective steering shaft. They ordered the part and will be in by next week.

So my concern is that if anyone has experienced this before?? It's a brand new car and only has 1k miles on it. Any other noise should I be aware of??? It also makes some noise that the dealer said is from the brakes and they said is normal. Any ideas/advice would be good :)

Am I crazy or am I missing how to turn off that light that's in the center console. You know, the one in that little center compartment. It's always on and it drives me nuts! Any help?
  • kylemkylem Member Posts: 1
Yeah, how exactly did your car drive when you were experiencing this problem. I have a 2005 Scion TC. I'm experiencing very heavy steering. I have heard a clicking noise too though when I accelerate. Did yours also have heavy steering???
  • mark19mark19 Member Posts: 123
let me help you out here.. the 05 Scion tC has a service bulletin for a new steering rack and new power steering pump. This could be why you're experiencing the heavy steering. You might want to go to your Toyota or Scion dealer (both have this) and get a copy of the technical service bulletin for the steering. If you're also hearing clicking when steering, then yes definitely it has a problem. Hope that helps..

Hi all, I'm getting ready to buy my first new car (finally getting rid of my clunker '93 Escort) and I'm looking at one of three cars. I'm particularly interested in the Scion tC because of the overall look of the car and all of the features that are included with the price. I am also looking at the Chevy Cobalt and the Saturn Ion. After having to pay for constant repairs on my Escort I want something that isn't really high maintenance and is a reliable car. I do realize that most people are quicker to report problems than they are with compliments and that there are at least some problems with every kind of car, but the list of problems with the Scion tC is kind of daunting. My main question is this: are there still consistent problems with the Scion? I'm reading all of these problems and wondering what percentage of owners experience these problems (from the forum it seems like many). Also, does anyone out there have any opinions regarding the "best buy" out of these three cars?
  • mark19mark19 Member Posts: 123
hey jabber.. the best buy in my opinion would be the tC. and the 06 owners don't have anymore problems with it. It was really first year production problems. they are all fixed now. Even the rattles. Friend of mine picked up an 06 a month ago, and he's not had anything wrong with it, no rattles, nothing.

For what you get, the tC would be the most reliable, and the "best buy".. I like to say "bang for the buck" now that all the first year production problems are corrected.

so the only thing you'd have to do is wait like a month to delivery.. my buddy waited 6 weeks for it to get there. That's how high of a demand there is for them. Hope that helps you..

Thanks for the info! That's what I was hoping to hear (and kind of what I suspected). I appreciate it!

with all resepect man you need to go back to the dealer and ask them what they were talking about, brakes should not make noise. maybe a slight scrapping noise that barely should be audible. you need to get them off there butt if your brakes are making a clunking noise. its a new car, it should not make any noises. if my customers told me the brakes were clunking you bet your [non-permissible content removed] i would go over that car and find it. brakes should not clunk in anyway

I am buying a tc, the dealership is trying to convinve me to get LoJack, is it worth it? Are there better options?
  • mark19mark19 Member Posts: 123
LoJack is pretty good, but why is your dealer trying to convince you to get it? Do you live in a theft-prone area? Sure theft can occur anywhere, but some places are worse than others.. Better Options? lock your doors, don't leave anything out in the open for the thief to see.. Most thefts occur as a "moment of opportunity".. If a pro wants your car, not even LoJack will stop him, plus you'd never see your car again..

When you get your car definitely get GAP insurance.. That will help a lot if your car got stolen or totalled..

Anything better than LoJack you asked? Probably a GPS-based system that could track in realtime.. Most likely your dealer is just trying to make money off of you.. as a dealer installed option. try yoursciontc.com or scionlife.com for more help on security systems (forums)

I said my Mazda3 came stock with Goodyear RS-A - not the TC - included this as a reference only - I know this is a TC board. BTW - they were completely worthless on anything but a dry smooth road - which is about 25% of the miles I drive.

I wanted something that was more of a daily driver - soak up the bumps - good overall traction even on wet roads - last more that 15K miles - a real all season tire - that would also handle some hard cornering when I felt like having some fun.

I do understand some people think that their 4 banger 160 HP vehicles are high performance race cars and they MUST have ultra-high performance rubber - so they can push their car to the edge (nothing wrong with that) - but some want more of a balance - because most of the miles they drive are in heavy traffic on crappy roads - and they don't want to buy new tires every year.

When I was about 16 years old I figured out how to adjust the PSI of my tires to get the combination of ride and handling that was "best" for me.

If someone claims the ASX is mushy (I have read this before) it tells me they know nothing about the basics of tuning a car. Based on your post I assume you don't know much about it either.

For example - if I run Mazda's recommendation of 32 PSI (Kumho ASX) the ride is a little soft - but if I bump the PSI up to only 35 it makes the ride firm and the handling sharp. The ASX is rated to 51 PSI - which gives you the ability to adjust the tire to whatever driving feel you want. I know a guy who likes to run 45 PSI (Mazda3 hatch - Kumho ASX - which is closer in weigh to the portly TC). He wants to feel every bump and have no lag in turning response. I have ridden in and driven his car many times - sure does not feel mushy to me.

Is the lack of a rear wiper a real problem for tC owners? Does anyone know if the 2007 models will have them?
  • mark19mark19 Member Posts: 123
nope its not a real problem at all not having the rear wiper. But the tc will never come with a rear wiper, toyota won't be re-designing it like that..

i am currently experincing this same problem. just like you said, after i drive for 15 minutes the light comes on again. i havent taken the car to the dealership just yet. but i am curious how to fix it without taking it in....

I am thinking about a Scion TC or Mazda 3 for my daughter. I love the idea of buying a Toyota(own a Lexus), however, I continue to see people posting issues with the rattle(back hatch I assume). I am amazed after over 2 years Toyota hasn't fixed this. Do people agree this is a problem, It looks like It still is. Thanks
  • mark19mark19 Member Posts: 123
the 06's made this year and the 07's were fine, looks like toyota finally caught the hatch rattle. Yes you're right the first year production, which was 05 did have a lot of rattles which were taken care of later in 06. The people complaining if they have an 06 are EARLY 06 models which is pretty much the same parts as 05 anyway.. later in the 06 production run, the rattles disappeared. Toyota finally caught up with it.. You should test drive an 07 and see for yourself if the rattles are gone.. that will show it to yourself

The mazda 3 has also had it's problems too, a/c units that don't work, and some other things I can't recall what it was.. the tc may have had a rattle here or there fixed with foam tape, at least the heater or a/c didn't go out like the mazda3..
  • sdm69sdm69 Member Posts: 5
Good luck with that .. . The rattles don't show up until 5K - 7K miles or so. But they are still there. The real problem it the ridiculous warranty policy of Toyota / Scion. If you ever have a problem with an “Accessory”, which is how you must equip over 90% of your Scion, you will run into the most bizarre warranty issue I ever saw. After complaining to Scion Corp about it I got the following official response. -- "Dealerships are independently owned franchises who will warrant Scion supplied accessories that become necessary due to a manufacturers defect. However, they are not required to warrant another dealerships work. If you are experiencing concerns on your dealership installed alarm, I would recommend taking your vehicle to the dealership where you had the alarm installed.. ." Unlike a Toyota where you get factory options delivered with your new car, Scion makes you have a lame dealer install them. Then you can end up arguing with the dealer service manager about who did what if you have another dealer install any accessories. The rattle I had was caused by a bad install job by a Scion Dealer. I suggest you read the Mazda 3 brochure. It specifically stated dealer installed accessories installed at the time of delivery of your car are covered by the same 4 year warranty as the rest of the car. – Wake up Scion! – I’ve sold my Sion if you didn’t guess.

I am going to be getting a TC soon -
    1. Since all the car dealers have the same price - should I buy at the closet dealer?
    2. The Wheel wells seem to be a dirt colector ... has anyone had any concerns about that?
    3. The Ipod offered - is it worth it?
    4. The floor mats - all weather with carpet on them ... are they worth it /
    5. The lip spoiler - seems to me no a clean fit plus over hangs a bit - any concerns here?
    6. Does anyone have the amber light kit offered - how is that.../
sorry for all the questions - new here --thanks for your help
  • karportkarport Member Posts: 13
    1. Buy from the dealer that is known for the best service.
    2. All wheels have that problem, spray cleaner from auto store works.
    3. My opinion on Ipod option- not worth it. Radio plays MP3 files. Rip a CD of MP3 files or use the aux jack that is located in the arm rest.
    4. Floor mats are worth it, a bit expensive but quality.
    5. Not keen on the lip spoiler but again personal taste.
    6. Can't help you with the amber light kit.

I have a 2007 TC. The sunroof and rear hatch problems have been fixed ( I did my home work)

Also fixed were the seat fabric issues and a new design for the radio cover.

I have experienced no problems and have owned quite a number of cars in my life. It is a safe purchase and am old enough not to refer to purchasing any car as an investment.

Any thoughts out there about the tc's fog lights ...
I am thinking of getting them ,.... do they work well
and do you think they look cool?
  • lylylyly Member Posts: 1
WOULD TINTING THE WINDOWS, GIVE IT A BAD LOOK? I AM JUST SO USED TO HAVING MY WINDOWS TINTED THAT IT FEELS SO WEIRD THAT PEOPLE CAN LOOK STRAIGHT AT ME.
    :)
  • karportkarport Member Posts: 13
Any fog light works well when mounted closer to the ground.

If they look cool is a matter of opinion

I am new to this forum, so I wanted to see if anybody that owns a tC 2006 model had this issue or not.

I have owned this car since September 05 and like it very much. But in end of August 06, when I was driving my car I noticed that my AC was not working. So, I took it in to the dealership and to get it checked. The service manager from the dealership called back to say that the condenser was punctured because a rock apparently flew in through the grill and did the damage. I was shocked to find this out! The car is not even a year old and I had to shell out $1000 on getting it fixed!!!

I asked the service manager if this was a manufacturing defect or what, and he said "that this is a freak accident that can happen to anyone" and that if I had issues with it I should call the Scion customer service and complain to them. I had to go thru my insurance company to get it fixed. I have contacted Scion's customer service regarding this issue but have yet to hear back from them. I also researched the Edmunds website and found that some xB owners had this same issue, which means this could be a manufacturing defect from Toyota.

Has anybody else experienced this issue?
  • rowlandjrowlandj Member Posts: 254
I have not personally had this happen to me. However, I also have an Audi A4 and I have heard of anoher person also having that happen to their A4 via another messge forum. It is an odd occurence, but not unheard of for it to happen.

Another 'big ticket' item that can fall prey to this is expensive headlights on some vehicles. Apparently they get shattered by flying debris often enough for there to be after-market protection 'film' to be a big seller.

it's a road hazard, not a defect I don't think. You may want to think about some kind of grille guard material. Your insurance should cover this.

I have a 2006 with 13,000 miles. I sit in stop/go traffic morning and afternoon. The brakes get hot and they squeal when I start putting them on and when full pressure is applied it stops. Dealer says everything is fine. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Appreciate any suggestions or comments.
  • scooby4scooby4 Member Posts: 1
I would love to talk to you or anyone else that has had this problem. We bought my daughter a TC in May '06 and the condenser developed a small hole from a pebble. She took to a dealer and they repaired on a "goodwill" repair. Now we have the same problem again, so even after you get it fixed, it can happen again. I have called Scion headquarters and they denied the second fix and told me that they would not take my calls anymore.

I have found out in the last 2 days that Toyota has had the same problem with Corolla's and they will install a mesh covering under the condenser to protect it from road debris. I'm not super crazy about spending $800 for a repair that might happen over again and having Scion say tough luck.

But what I wonder is how many of us are out there. If this happens in 3% of the cars they will do a fix.

As a host, I see this problem occurring with a wide variety of cars. I just read one on a Nissan Murano yesterday.

New 07 TC owner here. Love the car so far but found one nuiance. I find that even with the A/C or Heat is off when I'm on the hwy a tremendous amount of air comes out of the vents. Is there a way to stop this?
  • baldwin3baldwin3 Member Posts: 121
I posted on Murano in reply to several instances of this happening to our models..basically, debris from cars in front of you...pebble, nail... hits the thin A/C grille which by necessity is exposed to frontal airflow. ANY auto can have this, just as that same missle could break your windshield. I purchased a segment of aluminum grille/grid used for keeping leaves out of gutters, cut it to slip into the grille opening, and it sits, without any screws or support in front of the A/C. Simple, effective and prevents the 1:1000 hit that can occur, without blocking air flow. John B from Murano Problems and Fixes

Hi, my name is Chris and I am writing you to see if you got your problem fixed on the tC. I just bought the 07 tC and I have the same problems. What did you do to fix it or did you get it fixed. Please email me back asap so that I may find out whether I need to take it in for service. Thank you.
  • mark19mark19 Member Posts: 123
mojo712.. how many miles do you have on it now? if it's under 1000 then i'd say let the car learn how you drive. the computer that controls the engine and transmission will learn how you drive. There is "grandma mode" where if you have to "get on the gas" quickly the car will act like it doesn't know what you want.. Then there is "sport mode" where it will aggressive select the gears. How do you get it in either of these modes? well.. if you drive aggressively the computer will always enable (once it sees on average how you're driving) the "sport mode" as i call it.
The "grandma mode" can give the sensation that the car has lost its mind and isn't responding to your inputs. Sorry to put grandma down like that ;)

Only 2 ways to clear "grandma mode".. One is if the car is past break in, then drive a little more aggressively, the computer within about 2-3 days of driving (about 300-400miles) will catch up with what you're doing. The second way is take it to the dealer and have them clear the ECU memory of what the car has learned for the transmission. And then you can re-teach it how you drive. Hope the helps..
