This is true...I never considered a non-U.S. buyer. Of course there are differences between intended markets including standard features, options..colors, both interior and exterior...engine and drivetrain choices to a lesser degree (for the Sonata a choice of a few different sized 4 cylinder engines in Korea but only one V-6). Diesel engines which are not available in the U.S. can be had in the Santa Fe, Tucson, Elantra, (but as far as I know not the Sonata), and possibly other Hyundai vehicles in Europe, Middle East, etc.

this is my first hyundai so a couple of questions i have is
does the lx model have overdrive? i've looked in the manuel and cant find anything on hilly terain
my previous cars i would take the car out of overdrive for more power going up hills how do you do this on the sonata
also i never did get an answer on the auto climate control anyone else notice you cant disable auto and just have the fan on
    any answers will be appreciated
oh and by the way i simply love this car good solid fun to drive automobile
  • "overdrive" was just the top gear of the transmission (4th gear on a 4-speed auto, for instance), and by taking it out of overdrive, you were forcing the transmission to ignore that top gear.

You can do something similar with the Sonata using the manual gear selector next to the "D" selector. Just bump the automatic shifter from "D" to the right, and then bump it down to the "-" (minus) sign to downshift.

I've found the Sonata's transmission to be so intuitive that you don't need to force it into lower gears for acceleration or passing. Just keep it in "D", press the gas, and let the transmission do its thing. The only time I use the manual gear selector is when gearing down for downhill descents and trying to control speed.

I keep a close eye on the Chinese motor companies.
About two or three companies may have the ability to enter US 5 or 8 years later. Including(Chery, Geely and JAC??)
Chery is what Bricklin(the Yugo guy) plans to sell in 2007.
I don't think Bricklin will suceed this time.
There are many small problems in the chery cars. And Bricklin plans to sell the cars as cheap premium. However,in China, chery is famous for selling cars at the lowest prices. Different strategy from Bricklin in US.

JAC is a truck company there, it keeps steady growing rate about 50%/year for more than 15 years. The quality of the truck and vans are the best in the Chinese makers. And it has plans to build cars in recent years.

Geely is a company which can build really low price cars however the cars are a little bit out dated. This company struggled several years and becomes strong now.

Chery and JAC are quite close(less than 200miles). They can keep the cost enen lower if they can share some parts.

All these three companies have exported cars or trucks to Africa, middle east and some other countries. 5 years later, these companies may become very competitive even in US market.

I will definitely buy stocks of chery and JAC if available in US and maybe several cars from them 5 years later. :P

"Overdrive" is the top gear shift (4th) for cruising at a steady speed (over 40-45mph), on a flat freeway/highway terrain for fuel economy.
The 3rd gear is the one you need to get more power going up a hill, or heavy load of people or pulling a trailer/boat.(for speed above 25-30 mph)
To get to 3rd gear : Go from D to the right and Minus --> will down-shift to 3rd.
To get back to D move the stick back to D.
By the way, even "Shiftronics (4 AT)" have 4 Gears Forward and One Reverse.

    thanks you answered my question
do you happen to know anything about the auto climate control system
im trying to find out if i have a defect in my 2006 sonota or it is intended to work this way
im just trying to get the best gas mileage by just turning on the fan without the a.c.
but if the temp reading is below the outside temp evan with the auto off the a.c. kicks on
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
"...do you happen to know anything about the auto climate control system..."
One thing I will never get is AUTO CLIMATE system, because usually it is set to work automatically using "Comfort Zones", with no manual adjustment.
However the owner manual may explain how to override it... and use it manually!

No doubt China will make cheap cars, maybe even lux cars such as SSangYong they boutght from Korea. For now, it's still like whether you like to buy a car from Wal-Mart. I will look at crash tests before making any decision.

BTW, I think Cambodia will make cheap cars as well. If car building is nothing more than mounting a foreign engine to a steal box ( simplified but pretty true ). Chery uses Mitsubishi engines on its high-end lineups:)

And India makes cars too, pretty cheap. They now export its production line to China.

prg909--The LX comes with a 5-speed automatic Shiftronic (that's 5 forward gears) with 5th gear being a .73:1 reduction overdrive. If your mountain area is like the Western slope of the Sierras where I live, for most uphill driving you'd want to just leave the selector in D and let the computer and the tranny do the gear selection. For steep down hills you can put the selector in 2nd or 3rd to use the engine as a brake. If you "lock" it into a lower gear for uphill travel, you'll probably be running at an unnecessarily high RPM for those stretches of road that level out.
  • desertguydesertguy Member Posts: 730
OTOH - leaving the Coachella Valley in California you have a 10 mile climb. If you don't shift into 4th gear, the transmission will constantly hunt back and forth from 4th to 5th. I just leave it in 4th for the climb.

Now if only Sonata interior can be upgraded, re-designed dash center stack, addition of seek controls on steering wheel, break-away mirrors, tweak suspension and include the following on options wish list such as: factory installed NAV, pwr pass seat, dark interior color, satellite radio and full-size spare.
  • averigejoeaverigejoe Member Posts: 559
Maybe an Azera would be more to your liking?
  • delta4delta4 Member Posts: 138
Actually, I'm looking at how much better the Sonata's interior could be (should be). These are suggested tweaks, not entire re-design. Also those aforementioned wish list options are in keeping with what the competition already is offering.

As for the Azera, well that is a nice car for them and may prove to be the image booster that reinforces Hyundai as a quality automaker.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The XM radio is a given for 2006. Navi is available in other countries, and with more competitors offering it I think it will show up on Sonatas in the U.S. very soon. The new Santa Fe has a seek button on the steering wheel, so maybe Hyundai will addd it to the Sonata soon. The black interior is offered elsewhere--can easily be brought here if there is demand. As for a new dash, I think that's unlikely until the mid-gen refresh, but you never know.

Keep in mind that Hyundai is probably intentionally simplifying the Sonata for the U.S. right now to make it easier for the new factory in Alabama to ramp up while maintaining quality. Now that they have added the 4-cylinder models in Alabama, they can focus on adding more options and other features. I've found Hyundai is pretty responsive about making changes based on owner input, based on the experience with my Elantras. Between my '01 and '04 Elantras, they tweaked a lot of little things that were annoyances or nice-to-haves. So new Sonata owners should be sure to mention what they would like to see on the car in the new-car survey they get from Hyundai.

Yes we had an early snowstorm here in the Toronto area. I have the GLS (six cyl engine, ESC etc)with extra options (LX -per se not packaged here in Canada - but this is the close equivalent).

I drove on snowy roads with maybe an inch of new snow - no salt yet - and in a parking lot. I tried to push it a bit when safe to do so to check out the ESC. The ESC light comes on on the dash (The top half of the ESC OFF light). From the manual and promo I thought it would somehow sense direction and skids and bring me back into line by selective application of the brakes on individual wheels using the ABS system. That didn't happen on skids that were not powered. In forward motion with power the ESC light came on a lot and there is a loss of power as brakes are applied. What is happening I think is that the sensor knows that one powered wheel is slipping and slows it down by braking - if both wheels are alternarely slipping, it seems to slow both. If there is a bit of a skid under powered turn then the ESC light comes on and seems to allow keeping the turn under control. I didn't try all this with ESC off to compare but will do that soon.
  • johnjjjohnjj Member Posts: 81
engineer941, forget this parking lot stuff. Go out on the interstate highway and give it a real life test. If you don't report back, we'll conclude the ESC isn't effective.

You're kidding, right. He "played" with the ESC (tested it out) in a safe environment. :P

Have my new Sonata less than a week and already someone banged into my rear bumper leaving two marks from his license plate screws. I should have put on some bumper guards. Have any of you put on any rubber guards? Any suggestions?

Presently, the Sonata GLS V6 has 3 rebates for November. The first is the $1,000 rebate for everyone. The second is the $1,000 rebate for financing. The third is the $1,000 rebate for owner loyalty. I would like to know what everyone thinks what the rebates will be for December. Will Hyundai discontinue any or all of them or will all the rebates continue as is for one more month?
  • haefrhaefr Member Posts: 600
Look for an additional December $10,000.00 rebate if your birth certificate lists your name as, "Santa Clause".
  • engineer941engineer941 Member Posts: 10
Hey thanks for the advice -but what's an "Interstate" - we don't have those here.

Anyone find a nice clean way to add satellite radio to a 2006 sonata. I really want to add sirius and went and bought the sportser tuner. Well you end up with wires all over the place and it does not look very nice. I just got this nice new car, I want to keep it looking that way. Due to the way the radio is setup in the new sonata it does not look like there is any easy way to do it. Anyone else tried this??
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
I have a Honda Pilot and it is a pretty good vehicle I must admit. I bought it in summer 2003 so paid about 300 under MSRP because they were so hot then.

I was looking to buy an Accord but bought the Sonata 2006 GLS instead and I real happy with it. I got it for 16,000 way under invoice and way less than Accord with alot more options. Honda is so snotty and arrogant it turns me off.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Start with the invoice price, add the delivery fee then subtract out the rebates they have 1K for the 6 cyl, 1K to finance with them (finance with then then pay it off immediately or refinance with the bank of your choice), 500 for the 4 cyl, 1K for trading in a Hyundai (buy a crappy one for 50 bucks and push it in there ;0), 500 for military peoplle. If you want they may even go 300 - 500 lower than this. (I wish I went alittle lower) They are desperate to sell these cars and run their sales numbers up. I bought my 2006 GLS 4 cyl for 16K! It was way under the Edmunds TMV price!
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
One last thing the 4 cyl Sonata 2006 are still made in the Asan, Korea plant. The 6 cyl are made in the new plant in Alabama - but it is an unproven plant yet. The Accord had some problems when it was first made in the states. Later in the year the 6 cyl will be made here too. Just food for thought.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Agree with almost every thing. Full size spare doesn't matter to me you use it just to get to the gas station. I remember though that was one of Hyundai's big selling points back in the late 80's - they had a full size spare ooh-aah!
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
They want to move these cars big time. They will have the rebates continue. Buy it at or below invoice then subtract out the rebates - not a penny more.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
As of October, all Sonatas sold in the U.S. are made in Alabama. Before then, the 4-cylinder models were made in Korea. There are probably still some Korean-assembled Sonatas on dealer lots.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Finance with them and pay it off immediately with cash or a loan from bank of your choice and get that 1,000 rebate. Buy a 40 dollar :surprise: piece of crap Elantra and push it in there to get another 1,000 rebate. Got to think smart!
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Thanks. I guess I just made it. I was alittle surprised when the salesman told me it was made in Korea but the price sticker confirms it. :)
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
No you can pay off immediately. They are betting you won't, and alot of people won't, they will still make lots of money. Also there is not limit to how much you can loan and still get the 1000 rebate. You can borrow 500 from HMFC and 17500 from your bank or pay the rest in cash.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
You speak the truth! Thank you.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
The Accord had some initial problems when it first was being built in the states. There can be all kinds of different variables in the US plants. I hope the quality is as good or exeeds the Korean plant - we will see.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
What makes you think a Korean assembled Sonata is better than a USA asembled Sonata?

$1 billion plant with much robotics, extensive employee training and the 6 cyls (GLS & LX top of the line) being built in USA from day one.

Hyundai is banking on this car big time. Do you think they would risk everything on building their top model-trims at an inferior facility and keep their lower model-trims in Korea?

For whatever logistical reason Hyundai wanted to keep the Alabama plant limited to 6 cyl engines for the first months of production. The build quality shouldn't be any different. Your VIN will verify where the car was built.

Remember when Detroit ruled? At that time, it didn't matter which plant a car was built in, they were the best at that time. The only thing to be concerned about was a "monday" or "Friday" car.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Yes the K at the beginning of the VIN signifies Korean built. As to which one is better only time will tell.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Lets also face it. The work ethic is much stronger in Asia no matter how much robotics and machines you have it comes down to people. I think it will take some time to work out the bugs in the new facility. I can tell you one thing they REALLY want to sell you this car the push for sales is enormous!

    Go to a Radio Installer.
Have them mount a short post on the center hump (passenger side). Make sure the post has adjustable sections.
Use the car mount kit (have the installer put it in).

DO NOT get a separate in-line FM modulator. I did and it wiped out my AM frequencies due to the high power output.

Just buy a sattelite radio that has an internal FM modulator and tune your FM radio to the proper frequency.

It's really not too expensive to do. Parts and labor are less than $200 plus the cost of whatever type of Sat radio you buy.

    Good luck.

On another 600 mile trip, I did cross-check the trip
computer manually, calculating by hand. The trip
computer gave me a result of 26.0, but actual was
25.5, or about a 2% error. Accurate enough for me.
I haven't been able to get near the sticker's
quoted 30 mpg, and the GLS V6 has almost 2k miles
now, so it is broken in.

As far as the seat comfort, this trip wasn't quite
as bad as the first. I got a 2" cushion, and also found that my right leg doesn't hurt as bad if I sit to the
extreme right of the seat. It seems that the accelerator is positioned more right than most cars. Has anyone else had leg problems from the GLS non-power seats?
  • michaelomichaelo Member Posts: 3
I am thinking about purchasing a 06 Sonata. Are the seats really that bad that you need a cushion? Do you have leather or cloth? Is there a comfort difference between the two?

That seems like good mileage for a V6.

    Thanks for any help!
    :)
  • haefrhaefr Member Posts: 600
You might try a search using "front seat" as your key words on the '06s. A number of people have complained that the new Sonata's manual seat rakes down toward the front - trying to "spill" the occupant forward, and additionally has little to no front thigh support because of the lower seat cushion's shallow depth. As to mileage, well broken-in '06 V6 engines (5,000 miles and over) are returning over 30 mpg highway. At only 2,000 miles, zen2's engine is not fully broken-in by any means.

I've owned my 06 LX Sonata now for 2 months, we have 2200 miles on it, leather drivers power seat. I have to admit the seat is probably the one thing that I have heard the most complaining about since researching the car. I and my daughter are both 6' tall, I have not heard her complain about the seat, she loves the car, so do I. It is the best car I have ever purchased. My wife is 4'6", she does not complain about seat at all, she too loves the car. We bought the car for our daughter to commute to college. We all fight over who is to drive it next, I can see myself buying another Sonata soon. When Hyundai started running the Sonata advertisement, I told my son, we need to look at that vehicle, the warranty caught my attention as did the curves of the vehicle, simple put, we love the car. We have been on two 400 mile trips, both times we averaged 31 miles per gallon. Around town here I average 25-26. If you are serious about buying any vehicle, get your research & invioce price from Edmunds.com, if you remember anything I've said, remember Edmunds.com & invoice price. That is your best chance of getting the best price for any vehicle. Have a great day!

I agree with haefr on the breaking your car in period. However, it is very complicated for one to accurately gauge gas mileage. It all depends on the road, weather, speed traveled and condition of the car (tires etc). From my perspective the 6 cylinder gets excellent gas mileage in both the city and on the highway. Recently I averaged 25.8 miles to a gallon on a trip of 334 miles one way non-stop driving trip. That was pretty good when you look at an avg. speed of 70+. Current mileage is 7,800 miles plus..

After having my LX for two weeks and really enjoying it, I've come up with my list of changes that I feel would make this car even better.

Seat belt chime is annoying - Enough said.
Automatic headlights on feature needs tweaked - As compared to our Trailblazer, the automatic headlights features needs to be a bit more aggressive. It doesn't kick on as early in the early evening as I would like or compared to the Trailblazer. Also, pet peeve here, but all manufacturers should wire the headlights to the wipers. In most states, if your wipers on on, state law indicates your headlights should be on as well. Nothing is crazier than people with DRLs on in a heavy rain with no tail lights on.
Fog Lamps on with marker lights - The fogs only work with full headlights on. They should work with your marker lights on as well.
Cruise/Brights/Fog dashlights need to be based on backlight setting - The dashboard indicators for those features are bright, even when you have the dash lights down. A little distracting to me.
Center console could be a little sturdier - Seems to move to the side when you place your elbows on it.

Anyone else care to add any of their suggested tweaks?
  • johnjjjohnjj Member Posts: 81
I hope Hyundai is reading this.
I have the 2006 Sonata LX with package 3 and love it.
    My pet peeves are:
    1. Seat belt chime.
    2. Doesn't have delayed door locks.
    3. I had the auto door lock activatedby the dealer so now when I drive, all the doors lock automatically. But when I stop and park the car the doors don't unlock automatically like my previous car did. Hard to get use to.
    4. Only one heat setting for the heated seats which gets too hot.
    5. The power steering is stiff when turning while drive slowly, like in paralell parking. Variable power assist would be nice.
    6. No light in the glove box, and at night the interior lights don't come on automatically when you stop, put the car in park, and turn the key off.
    7. No power passenger seat option.

I believe it is illegal in many states to drive
with only your parking lights on.
  • zen2zen2 Member Posts: 226
How in the world did you attain this mileage?
Mine was with AC off, driving at speeds 70 to
    80. Do you have some secret? I can not imagine
getting that kind of mileage. Around town I get less
than 20 mpg. Is the trip computer telling you
this, or have you actually measured it.

Oh, and if I was 4'6", I'm sure the seats would
    be fine. :)
  • zen2zen2 Member Posts: 226
Steering is variable power assist, in the USA.
I fail to see the value of #6, why not turn
on one of the lights, if you need a light,
    or just open the door?
