This is kind of a heads up.

If you folks are having your brake pads replaced prematurely, and your dealer is turning down your rotors (which should be done anytime the pads are replaced), then, in all likelihood, you will need to REPLACE your rotors the next time your pads need changing.

I speak from first-hand experience with 93 Accord that I finally traded after 130K+ miles. The rotors basically lasted for only two sets of pads then needed to be replaced. This was a recurring pattern over the life of this vehicle. I don't know why it would be any different with the Odyssey.

BTW, I have a neighbor down the street that also had to have their brakes replaced after less than 6 months on their '06 Odyssey. I'm watching my wife's 4 week old Odyssey for similar issues.

Mine does NOT grind when wet though. If your brakes are making noise first thing when you drive it, that MAY be normal as rotors will get corroded from sitting. Very noticable if you don't drive your vehicle regularly. Nothing wrong at all with this, once the corrosion is cleaned off by the pads, they'll be fine.

TRUE. Our 2000 Odyssey, 2003 Accord, 2005 Accord, and 2006 Accord all do this (make noise after being wet or sitting for a while), with no problems.

1- 115 added? Not by Honda, Touring has different wiring harness. Buy a $30 DC to AC converter as the integration in our Touring gets you no other bennies.

2- 12 VDC is working as designed. Generalization is that American brand autos have unswitched outlets. Far Eastern brands have ignition switched outlets and it varies on those from Europe but most have switched. You can overcome this by moving one wire once you ID an unswitched terminal.

I prefer unswitched, that way my car isn't charging my cell phone for many hours and it won't drain the battery...radar detectors will do this too (drain the batt.)

Also, I bought an AC-DC converter at Wal-Mart for $20 (don't pay the $70 for a 140 Watt if you don't need it, mine is 75 Watts, and powers my Dell laptop). It's also handy if you lose your car-charger (or don't have one) for your phone, you can plug the wall-charger into the AC/DC converter and charge your cell that way. It looks more bulky, but it works, and is actually cheaper than the car charger ($30 for my Nokia phone car-charger).

The new 2007 EX-L has automatic door lock, but unfortunately they took out the lazy susan and added to the touring instead. I just purchased a 2007 Ody EX-L Nav & DVD.

I just noticed that. They actually have a real coin holder as well. Perhaps Honda does listen when owners complain, which should silence the "Honda is perfect and there's a perfectly good reason they omitted that option" crowd.

    It's funny you say that...

The sales manager who we always buy our Hondas from told us a story a few years ago, I think it was when the first CR-V came out...

Someone who had bought the new CR-V brought the car back to the dealer because the Hs didn't line up!!!!

No kidding, I promise! We still joke about that today. Our Odyssey had that problem too, as a matter of fact...

I'll talk to y'all later, I'm gonna go call my lawyer about this... :P

    Very close to buying a '06 Touring w/Nav + RES DVD ...

For the temperature display on the air conditioning unit and the speed and distance display on the navigation unit, is it possible to switch both to metric units (Km/h, Km, Celcius)?

    Hi,
I'm a newbies of a new 2006 Odyssey EX-L, and I have couple questions that I hope someone can help:

    1. I follow the steps below to program my garage door opener (12-year old Sears/Craftsman garage door opener model # 139.53225SRT)and it did not seem to work. First I unplugged the garage door opener from the outlet. Pressed and hold both the remote garage door opener and the one of the home link buttons at the same time. The red indicator NEVER flash and stay solid at all time. Is this because I have an old garage door opener and it does not know how to communicate to the home link? or my steps are not correct? Is there an alternative solution?

    2. I noticed when driving during the day (with headlight OFF), my instrument panel light stays ON at all time. Is this normal (by default)? Is there an option to turn it off if headlight not turn on?

Thanks in advance... and love the Odyssey !

    What's up guys:

Went out yesterday with the wife to determine which minivan (Odyssey Touring loaded or Quest SE loaded) we were going to end up getting.

After sitting in both, checking out all the features, and test driving both, the clear cut winner for our family is going to be the Odyssey. In our opinion it drove better, had nicer features, and overall was just a better van.

So I've been breifly going over the logs on this forum and it seems like everyone is happy with their purchase.

    Question for you guys are:

    1. Not sure if I should get an 06' or 07'. Are there any difference between the two model years? Any improvements or upgrades with the 07'. I know I will get a better deal if I go with an 06', but I really would not mind paying an extra premium ($1500-$2000) for an 07' if Honda made some nice changes or improvements to the van. Resale value is not a concern for me between an 06 & 07 as I plan on keeping this van for a long time and not selling it.

    2. Any major things (TSB's, recalls, etc.) that I should be aware about with the Odyssey.

    3. What should I expect to pay. Loaded 06 or 07 Touring. How much over invoice for either one? Or are people paying sticker or premiums over sticker?

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.....

I am one of the many people that would have gone with a touring, but went with the EX with leather because of the run-flat tires. I have heard from several different sources, one of which being the salesman that sold me my car, that touring owners should plan to spend roughly 1000 dollars a year on new tires, plus a minimum of 300 dollars each time there is a flat tire after two years. He told me this once when I was in for servicing, so I was no longer a potential buyer and he was a lot more honest with me. So basically we came to the conclusion that Honda Odyssey Touring is a great vehicle to have get on a two year lease, but it is guaranteed to create expensive problems later on. Now you could take a risk, and get it, because I think that Honda must have a contract with Michelin, and once that is up, a lot more tire options will become available to the Touring owners. If this happens, it is still a long way away. The reason that makes the tires so expensive is that they cannot be plugged if you get a flat. Also, it is not only the tire that makes it expensive, but it is also the rim. You must purchase a whole new rim and tire each time it is replaced, and all four wheels and tire wear quickly, and should be replaced approximatly every 15000 miles. That is where the 1000 dollars a year comes in. These tires also cannot be switched with other aftermarket wheels, because the warranty may void.
Anyway, I have gone over the entire brochure and it does appear that there are changes, but not really that many to the Touring. There is a coin holder and a telescopic steering wheel. Unless you want the colors, Redrock Pearl, Sage Brush Pearl, or a black interior in the Ocean Mist Metallic, you could go with either. When I bought my Odyssey in March of 2006, I got a price quote on every single model. The lowest price I got for a "loaded" Touring was 35107 dollars. I bought my EX with leather below sticker price. Later, the salesman said it himself that the there really is not too much of a difference between the EX-With Leather, and the Touring that makes it worth the difference.
    I hope this helps.

Read the threads here on the PAX tires and the one on prices paid, etc.

I would like to hear the logic of those going with the PAX tires.

I bought an 06 EX-L last week because I did not want the run flat tires. The EX-L has everything I wanted except auto lock and auto headlights. I love the car and I am not sorry I bought this model vs. the Tourer.

The homelink can be touchy. There are a few different ways to program it (I think they are all in the manual) depending on what type of opener you have. Actually, the old ones should be easier, it's usually the newer, rolling code ones that casue extra work!

Make sure to push/hold both end buttons to clear the codes 1st, then put the opener right up by the homelink button when you push and hold. It really can take a while (30 seconds+).

My only thought is to check the opener (batteries Ok?) to make sure it works. I also have no idea why you would unplug the unit (probably just a safety precaution), since it isn't part of the lerning process.

Anyway, keep tyring. I have the same basic unit as you, and also a 1 YO model, so I know it works with the old style units (I don't think it is rolling code, although it might be)/

As to your dash, the lights are always on since it is electroluminescent of some kind. You will notice that the light dims when you turn on the headlights. It is normal, but does take some getting used to, which is why you often see cars with this type of dash lighting driving in the dark with no headlights!

I recently bought my Ody and thought that the doors locked automatically when you reached a certain speed (10mph) or shifted out of Park. My 1994 Accord did this and I guess I just assumed this would be the same on my 2006 Honda. Well, I can't find directions in the manual to set this and the car salesman thought the locks did the same thing. (maybe he got confused with 2007 model) Anyway, if anybody knows how to set this up please post. It's really getting on my nerves... :confuse:
  • fred222fred222 Member Posts: 200
These doors do not lock automatically. The salesman told you what you wanted to hear. I do not think that he got confused.
I forget what it was now, but when I purchased my 2006 Odyssey EX-L one year ago the salesman told me something the Odyssey did that it does not after I asked about it.
I also like the automatic locking doors. We have two other vehicles which have that feature and it is difficult to get used to driving one vs. the other with small kids.
On the other two vehicles (both Chryslers) you can open a locked front door simply by pulling the handle. I also prefer this to the Odyssey where you must first unlock the doors (all of them) to open a front door. This also allows the rear doors to be opened. I know that the Odyssey has some other lock-out features on the rear doors. Also be ware. If you unlock the doors of the Odyssey using the remote and do not open one of the doors within a short time the doors will lock again due to the alarm feature. This can be annoying and disturbing. Still a pretty good van.

I took my 2006 Odyssey EX-L to the dealer in for its first oil change at about 9 months and 6000 miles. Shortly there after I noticed a pinging from the engine when it is first started and cold. The ping goes away within about 2-3 minutes as the engine warms but it is real. Also after the first oil change the external temperature gage stopped working in a way that I considered reliable.
I have had this vehicle in to the dealer just the one time with an entire page of things that I wanted fixed. They did a good job in my opinion, but I should not have had to do that. Every door and window rattled including the sunroof. One of the front cigarette lighter covers broke the first day I purchased the vehicle. This has not yet been fixed. One of the windshield washer nozzles did not work. I am concerned about what they did to address the rattles and that they will return with age. For the sunroof they just put some very light pieces of foam on the top of the wind deflector. Now there is a ping and the temp gage is not reliable. Again, this vehicle is one year old with just over 6000 all highway miles on it. When the vehicle was about three months old I noticed a very slight whine under light acceleration which I associate with the transmission. This whine was not there when the vehicle was new and there now. Just like the pinging.
I paid more that I think that I should have for this vehicle because I did not want to deal with quality issues like this because it was a Honda. My wife purchased a 2005 Pacifica two years ago and her vehicle is much tighter than the Odyssey is now with twice the years and three times the miles and has had many fewer issues!

I would be very hard pressed to justify buying another Honda over a Chrysler with this experience and I am seriously concerned what the Odyssey will be like when the warranty expires. More engine pinging and rattles and whines and stupid little broken stuff! I hope that I am wrong. I have noticed low mileage 2004 Odyssey EX-Ls for sale below $20K, even certified vehicles. I think that this says something.

Was quoted a price of $700 over invoice, about $36500 + tax, tags, etc...

Is this a good price? What are other people paying for the same vehicle? I live in NJ, not sure if this makes any difference.

Thanks in advance for any responses.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
$700 over doesn't sound bad right now. Reported NJ prices tend to be pretty competitive.

I am trying to decide b/w Sienna and Odyssey but it's really close. My deciding is that the Sienna has bluetooth but Odyssey does not. However, I like the Odyssey's navi better.

Is there anyway to add bluetooth to the Odyssey? or some type of hands feee kit?

I have been a long time GM owner since the mid 1960's. My wife and I are retired and this will be our third winter that we are going south for several months. Last year as I shipped two large cartons home and stuffed a Bonneville to the window sills, I made up my mind to buy a van. At the complex where I wintered I was able to talk to owners of virtually every make van. With out an exception the Toyota and Honda owners were passionate about their vehicles. The others were honest and pointed out their issues.
I did drive a 2007 Buick Terrazza that had every option and standard features that I am used too. I was not happy with the ride and it"drove long" my perception. Also the salesman gave me a price and then said this is only good until 5 PM tonight. I had driven the Toyota and finally the Honda I bought. I liked the ride and feel immediately. When the salesman gave me the price I asked how long it was good for and he said until you buy it or we sell it to someone else. I went back later that day after checking the deal on the internet and bought the car. It is a 2006 EXL. Over the first 400 miles of 80% town driving and 20% highway of 65 to 80 mph I have averaged 20.3 mpg. I am happy with that. The car was a courtesy car for the Honda sponsored womens pro US Open in Newport RI and had 1065 miles on it when I bought it.Thus far I am very pleased with the car. I miss auto door locks, sentinnel headlights, remote start, adjustable petals and telescope steering wheel which were all standard on my Malibu Maxx that I traded. I have detected the hum at 2100 rpm and it does not bother me. I will mention it to the service manager when it goes in for an oil change. As long as it does not affect the car I won't let it irritate me. I can tell when the cylinders deactivate as I feel the car shudder. There are no rattles.
I picked the Honda over the Toyota for two reasons , first the ride felt more solid and second the Honda dealer is close to where I live. Also they promised a Honda loaner as long as I own the car. I did buy the extended warranty to 120,000 miles. I plan on running this for 10 years.

Sorry if I rambled on, but buying a Honda was a big change for me.

I agree with you whole heartedly on the driving experience with a Honda versus a Toyota. I test drove several Toyotas in the past and mostly sedans and I get the impression of numbness in the steering wheel. You can not feel the road with driving a Toyota, with that said, I don't want a BMW with sport package either because it would be too harsh of a drive, but Hondas strike it just right for me, personally, comfort and financial wise. :D

Yesterday I received a call from someone at Honda Motor Company. After we got passed the questions concerning the dealer and the salesman, I told him I had comments regarding the Odyssey EXL. I began by telling him every omission from the following amenities were standard on the relatively inexpensive Malibu Maxx that I traded. I also stressed that the salesman kept telling me how safe I would be in this vehicle. Here goes.

Auto lock on the doors when shifting into gear. This should be a no brainer as I have noticed that the car will re-lock the doors if I don't open them soon enough. It should be a matter of adding code to the program or enabling the code. Sentennel highlights at dusk and when the wipers are activated. Finally I am used to unlocking the doors with the module from a distance and having the headlights stay on until I open a door. That I view as a saftey feature.

Cargo cover accessory is available from Honda or to save money, try http://www.handa-accessories.com/odyssey05.html I just bought a 2006 EX-L yesterday, and got the dealer to throw in the roof rack crossbars in the deal. :) Without them, the rack is pretty useless. I am not sure why carmakers no longer include them. I saw the crossbars at this site so I knew I could ask for them.

    fred222,

I agreee that the problems are unacceptable, but 9 months and 6000 miles until the FIRST oil change is a bit too long too wait. That first oil change is usually done earlier than most, since the initial oil used in the engine can collect many minute dirt materials from the manufacturing process. As a first-time Honda owner, I may be wrong on this, and if so I stand corrected. (sitting back down).

We bought an 06 EXL yesterday, and the one thing that bothered us is that sometimes the rear doors didn't open all the way. I finally figured it out this morning (rear window down more than 3 inches keeps door from opening all the way and maybe tearing a persons arm off if hanging out the window..) :confuse: Salesman didn't know this. After I figured it out, I found it in the manual. Of all the mundane items covered by the salesman in their post-deal talks, mentioning this case would have really helped! The stupid thing about this safety feature is that even in manual mode, you cannot open the door all the way with the window down more than 3 inches. Maybe Honda can fix this sometime.
  • davantdavant Member Posts: 294
It's not likely that Honda will fix the sliding doors won't fully open with the window down feature as it isn’t broken. It was as you mentioned, to keep from creating the world’s slowest guillotine.

Here's another lesson so I'll save the headache; the left slider won't open if the gas filler door is open. Amaze your salesman!

If you think you have a tough time figuring all the EX-L gizmos, you should try a Touring as there are more 'quirks'.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
As noted above, keeping the door from opening all the way with the window down is a safety feature.

It's keeps young child or dog or drunk adult from getting their head caught in the door frame should their head be sticking out the window while the door is opening.

It's a CYA thing for Honda because we all know personal responsibility is thing of the past.

I agreed with you on this especially when everyone likes to sue everyone else and their family for own negligence.
  • skyhawkskyhawk Member Posts: 126
I am surprised that Honda still has auto up on the drivers window. GM dropped this because someone in the back seat stuck their fingers in the way as the drivers window was almost up. At least that was what I was told as to the reason GM dropped that feature.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
IIRC, the auto up has pinch protection.

People are clamoring for auto up and down. IMHO, GM may have dropped it due to cost.
  • johnddentjohnddent Member Posts: 13
I felt the same way. Odyssey nav won't accept a bluetooth addon, and therefore you have to have another LCD sitting on your dash. I have decided to go with after-market nav from Pioneer AVIC Z1, and include bluetooth integrated into the nav screen and the audio system.

It looks like a factory install because it goes in the same spot, but is a much better system including 30Gb harddrive to store your cds.

You obviously do not have the same Honda Dealer that I have. Downtown Honda of Spokane. They specifically said that I should not bring the vehicle for its first oil change before before the vehicle requested it. The initial oil is special and they want it in there for the entire break in period. These vans show how much oil life remains and I believe that mine was at 30%-40% remaining even with 6000 miles when I brought it in. Of course this was all highway miles. Because the Honda dealer said that it probably was not broken in yet they suggested that I not switch to synthetic oil, but continue with the dino oil for at least one more oil change which I did. I cannot wait to get Mobil 1 in it on the next oil change.
I have realized since writing my post that the pinging occurs in the closed loop engine mode before the oxygen sensors are warm enough (ca 600 F) to work. During this mode at initial start up the engine must operate only on pre-programmed commands since there is no data from the oxygen sensors. I will take it in for its next oil change as soon as possible and see if Honda has some re-programming available for the closed loop mode. Pinging is never good for an engine. I am warming the engine up now prior to driving which either eliminates or significantly reduces the length that the engine pings. Remember this is a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L with less than 7000 miles on it and it pings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, Spokane is at about 2200 ft which should reduce the tendency to ping!
I hope this does not happen to your van.

Someone else posted about salesmen. Their only job is to sell you the vehicle. They are not there to help you or do anything else but close the sale. If there is the slightest chance that something they say may stop a sale they will not say it and they will say ANYTHING to make a sale.
  • thegraduatethegraduate Member Posts: 9,731
If you unlock the doors of the Odyssey using the remote and do not open one of the doors within a short time the doors will lock again due to the alarm feature. This can be annoying and disturbing.

Not sure what you mean by "alarm feature" but, whatever...

Several automakers do this. It is a safety feature... if you accidentally unlock the doors (Say the key is in your purse and the button gets pressed - or a child finds and plays with your keys, etc...) they'll lock back 30 seconds later. I wouldn't want it any other way. It gives you 30 seconds to open a door/hatch before locking back, which should be MORE than enough time to get in the car.

    Hello,

I bought a Honda odyssey EX 2 weeks back. I recently noticed that the interior roof cloth just hangs out near the rear view mirror and the front glass, it doesnt get tucked inside to give a good finishing. I dont whether it is only in my vehcile or it is all the vehicles.

Please can anybody check and let me know. And what can be done about that

    Thanks

When I purchased my EXL four weeks ago, my salesman introduced me to the service manager. I was told 5000 miles for first change. I told them I would change just before I go south for the winter regardless of the miles so I don't have to change down there. They were ok with that. I do not have any pinging sounds from the engine. The fit of the interior is perfect. The only little thing I found was the rug above and to the right of the accelerator was not tucked properly into the panel. I noticed this while vacuming the rugs. I am pleased with the vehicle and the smoothness of the transmission. I can feel a slight shudder when the engine changes to 3 cylinders. This is more noticeable at lower speeds.

Hey all - I'm looking into getting an 06 or 07 Odyssey and need to store a wheelchair in the back with the 3rd row seats folded down. I need to be able to secure the wheelchair using some ratcheting tiedowns and was wondering if there is anywhere in the floor I can attach these?

In my old Caravan I took out the 3rd row bench and used the existing mount points which worked perfectly for the tiedowns.

Any advice or comments are appreciated!
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
No, there really isn't any anything in the third row area to tie to when the seat is down (although there is a hinge on each side they aren't suitable for your intended use). However, if you removed a seat in the second row you could use the seat mounting brackets in the floor.

If the wheelchair folds up, it could fit in the well behind the third seat (with the seat up) although, again, there really isn't anything to secure it to.

I do know from personal experience that the plastic interior sides in the third row area can be VERY easily marred when carrying an unsecured wheelchair.
  • robbygrobbyg Member Posts: 61
Thanks for the reply cccompson, I was afraid that there wasn't going to be a good mounting point for the tiedowns with the seat folded into the floor. Unfortunately I can't fold up the wheelchair easily, so I was hoping to be able to put it in the back laying down, which is what I had been doing in the Caravan. I also need both 2nd row seats so I won't be able to remove one for the mounting point.

I was really looking forward to having that folding 3rd row seat, guess I'll have to see what else is out there that will work with the tiedowns.
  • fx35awdfx35awd Member Posts: 218
If you don't mind driving an SUV, the Nissan Xterra has tie downs in the back of the second row seatings. I know this for a fact because my co-worker just purchase one recently. I guess the only obvious disadvantage is the Xterra is slightly higher than all the minivan on the market so you might have to wrestle to put in the wheel chair.
  • robbygrobbyg Member Posts: 61
Thanks for the suggestion fx35awd, I am currently driving an Explorer (sold the Caravan) and am having a hard time lifting the wheelchair into the back so I was looking to go back to a minivan so I wouldn't have to struggle so much. I could also use a few more mpg since the Explorer likes to drink lots of gasoline!
  • dsrtrat2dsrtrat2 Member Posts: 223
My '06 EX-L has tether points at the back of the 2nd row seats, and next to the tailgate latch. I should think that one could use the third seat latching points in the floor also. Not exactly sure what all you have to have, but I would think one could throw a cargo net over most anything with the 3rd row seats folded and have it tied in the front and tie/untie at the tailgate sill. I never knew that was there, till I read your post and went looking.

BTW, we really like these vans, as this is our 4th one.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,702
What if you take out the mini seat in the 2nd row (the middle one)? That has the floor kooks which should work for what you are trying to do.

Just test-drove an 06 EX. Nice around town, but rather loud engine noise and uncertain, jumpy transmission on the highway. Is the 07 better in these respects?
  • master1master1 Member Posts: 340
I don't know, but the 07 most likely has some minor changes. Don't ask your dealer if there's a difference because he will just lie and tell you there the exact same vehicles, just insist on test driving a 07. It may be the same, may be different.

But I never found the Odyssey to have a loud engine or rough transmission, and proffesional automotive reviewers say that it has a smooth engine and transmission.

Having owned quite a few luxury cars...the Ody engine is right there with the best of them in my book. Very smooth and quiet even into the higher revs. Transmission on the highway is smooth as can be, although it rarely has a need to downshift at those speeds. I think your test driver has some sort of issues.

The negatives I notice: Around town, the tranny does downshift when braking hard or descending hills which some folks read as "jumpy". I like the shifting for performance reasons, but it does give you the feeling of roughness at times. It also has alot of tire noise on certain road surfaces, namely concrete. Asphault roads are fairly quiet. Some better tires would help I think.

I wrote the post about engine pinging.
I did a test yesterday by filling up with 92 octane in place of 87 octane that I usually use. Drove the van this morning and no ping at start up. Nothing. Just the way it used to be. I would say that is a conclusive test for pinging and my 2006 EX-L has has it with regular gas and less than 7000 miles.

Bet it won't ping with mid-grade, around 89 octane either. Almost pining is good. The Ody engine doesn't require anything but regular and shouldn't ping. Try a different brand of 87; BP, Chevron, and Shell although usually a few cents more than 'quicky-mart' tend to ping less in our '06 O-Touring. At least now prices have returned to stupid levels versus insane.
