For a rather reasonable assessment of your vehical safety see:
http://www.informedforlife.org/
From his rather rigourious analysis the safest is:
Acura RL 4-DR. w/Side Airbags + w/ESC
#1 of 247 (lower risk)
The closest to a Audi Q7 might be the VW Toureg:
Volkswagen Touareg 4-Dr. w/Side Airbags (SUV)+ w/ESC
#132 of 247 (med. risk)
BMW X5 4-DR. w/Side Airbags + w/ESC (SUV)
#116 of 247 (med. risk)
Its my guess the Q7 will be the new number 1!

Currently have a BMW X5 3.0 sport petrol, the Q7 is far superior both in looks and drive. The air suspension gives a good ride, rear camera is a great feature.
My vehicle is due in late June.
Vault on 4 wheels. It's incredibly solid feeling. The interior feels like an A6, or A8. very comfortable. The quality of the gauges and dials are in a league of their own. [no surprise there]
It is a heavy vehicle, equipped with the 4.2 FSI v8 it still was a tad sluggish. I'm sure it would get better after the initial break in period. The V6 will come later in the year according to the sales lady. It will be the 3.6 in the Passat. With the heft of this vehicle I would imagine it would feel much like the Touareg when it came out. Snail like. While I didn't take any curves fast their didn't seem to be much body roll. The color was the Lava quartz grey [I think it's called] Very attractive. The floor carpet looks like bad shag carpet from Austin Powers bedroom. This was a little dissapointing. I remember thinking the same thing at the Houston auto show and saying to myself, "I sure hope that doesn't make it to production" The stereo seemed descent as well [bose] and there was plenty of room to rest my arms while driving. On the left they could go 2 places. The window sill if sitting high enough,[it's very thick] and as well the normal spot just below it by the door handle. The seats are adjustable in almost every way possible. No dead spots that I could tell due to no narrow b pillars down the back.
The most unfortunate news was that [Mark please close your ears] She said there would be no diesel option. I hope she's wrong as I've heard otherwise, but she said she had just gotten back from training in Dallas and that's what they had told her. If I can think of anything else I'll post later. This will hopefully be my wife's next car if she doesn't like the new redesign of the X5 better.
It is useful, and I do hope that Mercedes-Benz offers it on the E-Class sedan! (I might as well go to that forum...)

The Q7 feels incredibly solid. We drove one with the air suspension, and in dynamic mode, it feels more like a sports car than a 5200 lb SUV. And even with the 20 inch tires, the ride quality was very good.
The lines on the Q7 are quite beautifull in person. The huge grill looks great and everything is chiseled in good proportion. I think this is one of the best looking SUV's on the market.
Some have quibbled about performance, but I thought the V8 was plenty powerfull. The throttle is very precise and I didn't notice any hint of lag.
The back-up cameras and side assist work quite good as well.
The only things that I see as small drawbacks is that the huge 3 glass panorama sunroof does take up a bit of rear headroom, but it's not too bad. And you can't totally close off the roof just like the A3, so it might get hot in the peak summertime.
Also, the choice of carpet in the Q7 struck me a as bit weird. It has a multi-colored "berber" type look, and at first glance it's a bit strange. But I guess for clean up and hiding dirt in an SUV, it'll hold up over time. Just buy some all rubber mats and you'll be OK.
Overall, I give the Q7 a 9.5 on a 10 scale. This is an awesome vehicle for Audi.
Some observations -
Spectacular aesthetics. Silver/black.
Solid feel. Very stable on the road.
4.2 pulls well, and sounds great. Not sure about 3.6 (not driven)
I don't think there is a bad color exterior from the samples.
The limestone grey interior (based on a swatch) is not as light as it looks in cyberspace (good thing).
Side mirrors a good size.
The backup camera is cool, as is the side assist, but from where I sat watching the wife drive, not used. Still no substitute for turning your head.
Plenty of second row space for tall folks.
3rd row for "wee folk" only - at least for extended trips.
Only thing missing for the kiddies are the rear seat tv monitors. I know, I know, but the kids require transportation too sometimes, right? Life is what it is.
Anyone selling under MSRP?
The thing from my perspective is HUGE.
Reminded me, inside, of an A6 and seemed very well made.
From the outside and I know I'll get a whippin' -- gulp, well the dang thing looks like a Chrysler Pacifica.
Maybe, maybe, it will grow on me.
The Q7 does have a certain menacing and agressive look to it, and I think that's what sets it apart from the whole crowded SUV market.
I saw an Oyster Grey Metallic Q7 4.2 at the Chicago Auto Show, and I think it's one of the best-looking SUVs ever; for sure better looking than the Cayenne (the Cayenne has terrible standard wheels on all but the Turbo S version).
Also, the interior is quite nice because of its relationship with the A6- but that's what we expect from Audi these days! There is not one model in their lineup with an unattractive interior, and they cannot be compared to any car (except maybe the Range Rover) under $100,000. There is no company that has such consistency- under $100,000 or not.
I look forward to Audi catching up with BMW- and fast. Their goal is to sell 1.4 million vehicles by 2010, BMW wants to sell 1.6 million the same year. In proportion to today, that's a small margin!
I've seen many a spy-shot of the next X5, and it looks very similar to the current version, but Bangle has ruined the rear (the trunk window appears to be sloping), and the rear light clusters, although they're not actually in the picture (the shape of them), looks unappealing. Can't wait for the Q7 to remain the sportiest SUV!

Feels very solid, yet powerful with the smooth V8. Slipping the transmission into the Sport mode made the driving experience feel almost sport-car like, which says a lot considering the size and weight of this vehicle.
At first, I wanted the luxury 6-seater configuration, but after experiencing the third row seats, I'm going to go with the second-row bench for more flexibility. At this point, I am confident that a Q7 is in my near future. I have a 2006 A6 now and love it, and my past cars have been two different A4's prior to the Lexus RX300, which sadly has never satisfied me. Audi truly is a step above the rest in my opinion.
Now, it's just choosing colors. Has any one seen the Cobalt Blue or Condor Gray metallic on a Q7 yet? Also, what about the Espresso Brown/Tamo Brown interior? Choices, choices, choices . . .
Oh, by the way, an Audi executive at the Chicago Streets of Tomorrow driving experience told us that they have added the option to order an alcantara headliner on the Q7. This is suppose to be available now as an option. Apparently, it's a hand-stitched?, suede-like headliner that is darker than the normal headliner. He raved about how awesome it looks.
Can any dealer confirm that it is now available, and may if fact be installed on some shipped vehicles?
Also, I have been unable to confirm, but is this ACC the latest generation, that brings a car to a full stop in traffic?
I think the Q7 looks best in lighter colors. It's a big vehicle and I don't think the darker colors do it justice.
I can't wait to see a Quartz Gray car w/ the Espresso interior.

Only negative comments about the car concerned the rails that the second row seats ride on. When the seats are all the way back (needed for people six feet and above) the rails for the second row seats are exposed (tripping hazard). Berber carpet was not appealing. Also, with the second row seats all the way back left a limited cargo area.
Front seating area and instrumentation was excellent. Not sure about front grill (very large in person). Rear view camera would be a must have for this SUV.
Can anyone tell me why Audi decided against these two options???
We have an inexpensive portable dual DVD system that we only use for long trips so DVD option was not even something we wanted. The dealer did have an DVD option (aftermarket) that looked nice.
Contrary to previous readers we thought the 'berber' carpet was nice. As usual Audi did a great job creating a sophisticated and quality interior.
The best feature on the Q7.
I just don't think I need an SUV as big as the Q7. My son is in college and my daughter is in law school, and so we only have my 13-year old son at home. We're still going to drive it, and my son has seen three in person and loved it (he's a gearhead like me).
I love Audis. They make interiors that no one under $100,000 can match, have impeccable German engineering, and their style is elegant, aero and understated. They truly are fabulous cars. And yet, my wife would like something different- we don't want three Audis in the house. Would that not be a bit odd?
The reason we're getting rid of our 2004 RX330 so soon (in January) is because she had a '98 RX300 before and is tired of the same car. We have some good choices lined up:
2007 Mercedes E350 4Matic Sport
Range Rover Sport HSE
Porsche Cayenne S (very unlikely)
2007 (or 2008) BMW X5
Mercedes CLK350 convertible (more unlikely than the Cayenne; it would be stupid to have two convertibles even if this is her dream car)
Jaguar XJ (also unlikely because of its vast size and pricetag)
As you can see, we have some odd choices there. You can pretty much cross the Cayenne, CLK and XJ off the list. If I wanted a Porsche, I'd buy one for myself-- and I'd get a REAL Porsche! I also already have a convertible, so there's no need for a CLK. The E is our Mercedes on that list. XJ is not only too big and too expensive, but Jaguar has wavering quality and image issues.
So that leaves some nice cars. My son wants the Range Rover Sport, I want the E-Class, my wife wants both. I don't know what we're going to end up with.
I've seen the beautiful Alcantara headliner on the A8. If you're getting the Q7, you must get that!
Ordered my own Q7 today. Got the Premium, and then splurged by getting all the extras, except the Alcantara headliner. It just seemed over-the-top after adding the adaptive cruise control, adaptive air suspension, 20" wheels, etc. Never spent this much on a "vehicle" before, but figured, what the heck!
Struggled in choosing the color, though. I am a silver kind of guy, but the silver Q7 at the "Audi Streets of Tomorrow" event just didn't do the Q7-style justice. Went back and forth between dark and light colors. The light colors make the grill and the lower "air scoops" stand out more, while the dark colors brought out the lights more and gave the front a more aggressive look. Thought about the Condor Gray, but without seeing it in person, I hesitated. The dealer had one already in the Lava Gray - pearl effect, and it looked great, and I think I like that aggressive look better, anyway. So, ordered mine with that paint color.
A little concerned though because initially Audi says it won't be made now until mid-September, while dealer's other recent orders show production in less than a month. The dealer is going to call and check. I don't think I can wait until a late October or November delivery. I'm not that patient!
If it happened only once, it may even have been the pavement on that road. Don't let this affect your Q7 decision either way.
I'm looking at purchasing a Q7 Premium and was wondering if, with the bluetooth option, I can connect my cell phone to the car and have control of the phone via the steering wheel. I am basically just looking for a way to answer an incoming call or end a call by using the steering wheel.
Thanks
