Why did this guy beat around the bush. If he didn't like the B9 why didn't he just say so:-)

    Karen,

Your fix on silencing the seat belt chime worked like a charm.

You next challenge, should you accept it, is to get the passenger airbag on/off light to go out after the car is in gear.

OK, I love a challenge....How about duct tape? Sticky note? 3x5 photo of your favorite someone? Mount an iPod in front of it? Chalkboard paint? (I've really got ot stop watching all those DYI shows!)

PS: glad everyone is getter the de-chime thing to work...don't forget to ALWAYS buckle up, though!

I'm with Juice on this one. Unless I have left the passenger side to some extreme setting, I don't even notice it when driving alone. Besides. it'd just cost us some outrageous amount and add to the price of the car. I'm OK without it...just my 2-cents' worth.

Actually, I am always annoyed when I get in a GM car and the damn doors lock once the car is put in gear and/or gets over a certain speed.

My parents have a Park Avenue, and it UNLOCKS itself when you take it out of gear...NOT a safe idea in the metro areas of the country, especially. Since my mom drives around by herself a lot, I just grabbed their manual and found the de-programming instructions for that "feature". I think you can also override the 'LOCK" feature in a GM car in similar fashion.

Also the calibration of the temp setting are why off the mark. In my B9 setting the temp to 74 you are freezing. It may control the temp but what the temp in car is and what the display setting is - seem to have no correlation.

If I remember reading correctly from the manual (OK, I admit it, I did read some of it), the temp settings are controlled by the solar sensor in the front passenger side dash...near the windshield, in combination with an air temp sensor near the driver's knees. I find that in bright sunlight (which is most of the time out here) the car freezes me out at even 82 sometimes, but if the sun disappears behind a cloud or after the sun sets, all of a sudden I get a blast of warmer air at the same temp. I may experiment with covering the solar sensor just to see what happens.

We had an old Mustang when I was high school, those doors would unlock when you pulled the door handle. But I'm not sure that's entirely safe.

My BMW unlocks the door with a pull of the handle also, but will take a second pull to open the door for safety reasons. I kind of like this two step approach instead of hitting the unlock switch if I forget. I also had the dealer program the remote key at delivery to disengage the automatic locking feature. When is Subaru going to get away from the separate key fob and just build this into the key like others have done?

There's a lot of copy-catting going on in this article...I have read many of these one-liners in previous reviews, and this might even border on plagiarism. I don't mind the negativity of the review -- we all need to form our own opinions, and the more we read, the more educated we become, generally speaking. However I found nothing in this review that was remotely original or educational, and not worth including on my web site (my own opinion, formed of my own volition). There are other negative reviews out there which are much more intelligently written (not that I agreed with them, but they had value).

    Just my 2-cent's worth :-)

Front Bug Guard - it looks like there is NO screws holding it on. Is this true? looks like all clips are used to hold the guard to the front of the hood lip.

I installed mine. Yes screws are used to attach but they do not touch the hood. The clips however are secured to the underside of the hood with plastic blocks and screws. They give you clear 3M bandaids for a lack of a better word to protect your hood where you place the clips.

    Hope that helps.

.....the end of a story too long (and probably boring to anyone but me) which if it is told, I would have to break into chapters. Tonight, in spite of a dealer who apparently had no desire to actually sell a car, I took delivery of my Seacrest Green 7 passenger Tribeca with Nav. And even though I had to make a couple of compromises (including buying a 7 so I could get Nav...and now see that as of yesterday you reportedly can get it on a 5, I am pretty jazzed. I plan on driving a lot this weekend and enjoy. And speaking of compromises, anyone know if there is a way to get puddle lights added after purchase? The dealer isn't sure.

    Don
  • kmartinkmartin Member Posts: 427
Don, congrats on your long journey!

As for puddle lights, the general consensus seems to be "no", this is a factory-installed item.

Who cares? You got a great vehicle! Enjoy!

  • cptpltcptplt Member Posts: 1,075
so I went to the dealer and looked at 3 Tribecas in their lot and they all had black fasteners while my car has pink ones! obviously someone in lafayette knew it would be my wife's favorite color! at least I wasn't missing a piece of trim like I thought initially! or maybe this was a 'special edition" or worse, a prototype!
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Those pink fasteners are probably GM bits left over from building Mary Kay Cadillacs. :)

And congrats, Don! I thought the puddle lights were port-installed, not factory-installed, which would mean it may be feasible to have done somewhere down the road (probably not at the dealer) once the brave start to tinker with their new cars. *shrug*
  • kmartinkmartin Member Posts: 427
Maybe this is the 5000th Tribeca to be made and you win some sort of prize!!!! Like finding that special-colored M&M!

Actually, I like the Mary Kay theory better :-)

Anyone know of a way to change the setup so when I take the key out the headlights do not turn off immediately, maybe stay one for 30 seconds or something. Most of the cars I've driven do this and I find I really like the extra light for awhile.
  • manammanam Member Posts: 8
I got my atlantic blue tribeca thursday. Ordered the puddle lights with a bunch of other accessory but when the car came, puddle lights was missing :confuse: . Dealer told me they'll install the light once they get the authorization and part from Subaru. I called Subaru to find out whether this 'port install only' options can be installed by the dealer as he claimed. Subaru said they have to properly train the mechanics before allowing dealer installation....

Dealers advised that splash guards are not available in New England at this point, but they could order them from New York. Price $99 installation @ 1 1/2 hours $ 100 or so. Seems high to me. Anyone know if splash guards can be purchased directly from another source and if they can be installed by autobody or independent shop ...
Love the Tribeca 17- 18 MPG around town, will do 1st oil change @1k or so and convert to Mobil 1 and change every 5k-6 thereafter.

Go to www.allsubaru.com and get the guards discounted and your dealer should install in 1/2 hour max! I paid $45 to have mine installed.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Since you're in New England, try Liberty Subaru in NJ for the splash guards -- they are about 1 day away from you with UPS ground (versus AllSubaru which is on the West Coast!) which means cheaper and quicker shipping. Their website is www.libertysubaru.com. I normally e-mail the parts guy directly at "parts at libertysubaru.com" (replace the at with @) for the quickest service. These guys are great, and the prices are excellent too.

I have also ordered from Belknap Subaru in New Hampshire, which would be even closer to you. Their website is at: http://www.subaruxtras.com/ or call at 1-800-358-4029 . They also have great prices and service in my experience.

Also, here's a place in CT that has them for $79:

    http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partdetail.php?partid=3323

You can probably install the splash guards yourself -- it's normally an easy job and they come with instructions. You can turn the front wheels to get easy access to the fronts, and either use a stubby screwdriver or remove the rear wheels for those if space is tight (may not be required however). I have put flaps on all our cars and would definitley not pay dealer rates for such a trivial job. Plus it's kind of fun.

    Good luck,
    Craig
  • kmartinkmartin Member Posts: 427
Jerry, I was told 45 minutes to install but it took more like an hour and a half, mostly because of the complications of the wiring from the puddle lights. My dealer wasn't sure where the wiring went, so the tech removed part of the fenders to look for the the wires. If you have puddle lights, make sure you advise them to watch for this.

Also, if I remember correctly, the invoice price on the splash guards was around $75. You should be able to find prices close to this at some of the online discount parts places others have mentioned.

They really aren't that big once they are on the vehicle, but it makes a world of difference as soon as you hit that first muddy pothole :-)

Anyone know if I order a trailer hitch now without the cooler (for my bike rack), can I order just the tranny cooler later as an add-on if I decide I need it for towing?

Also, what's the install time on each of these items?

    -Karen in AZ-
  • robotb9robotb9 Member Posts: 82
Our dealer installed the hitch w/out tranny cooler. The salesperson advised against the added labor expense of installing the cooler unless we expected to tow something heavy. He said we could add the cooler later if we wanted it.

My 05 Eddie Bauer Edition has a punctured tire. Will I have to replace with 4 new tires or just replace the one tire.Car has 14000 miles. Any suggestions on replacement tires. I do not care for original Potenza92a. Looking for Michelins.

tire cannot have more than a 1/4 in difference in circumference or the AWD can get messed up.how is the tread wear so far??

the Bridgestonme Turanza LS is a great tire, they get rave reviews at Tirerack and are higher rated than the comparable Michelin touring tires. They are pricey though.

I see where the screws screw the bug guard on to the plastic clips and how the screws don't touch the hood. What I did not see is how the clips are secured to the hood beside being slid over the edge of the hood. I will have to look under the hood to find the plastic blocks and screws. I did see the 3M clear protective tape under each of the rubber bumpers and the clips.

I wonder how secure it is when I run the B9 thru a touchless car wash (actually touchless is a misnomer) just brushless.
  • subienewbie2subienewbie2 Member Posts: 458
You should replace at least 2 tires on the same axle, so they are the same diameter. Also for best handling and control it would be good if they were the same make & model..
  • cluelesspacluelesspa Member Posts: 648
splash guards are not simple (like most cars). the subaru splash guards require drilling! not like most, just remove existing screws install flap and reattach screws. they have a template you use to mark the location and then drill (hence Karen's experience with the wiring). I was told the wiring was not an issue and when I got the car back the puddle lights still worked :D
  • foxbat121foxbat121 Member Posts: 211
Never replace less than 4 tires unless all youe tires are new. A screwed up AWD system or differentials on either axle is much more expensive than 3 additional tires.
  • cptpltcptplt Member Posts: 1,075
I just ordered a set, has anyone put them on themselves?? looks like it should be easy enough. getting them symmetrical will probably the main problem. any neat tricks for doing that??

Will also get a sonar system, a local radio place is going to do them, will be about $350-400 depending on how much labor. the dealer wanted 700 for the system they have someone put in. These guys do all the sonar installs for the local Caddy (and BMW/MB/ Porsche/Infinti/Lexus) dealer but this will be the first Tribeca they have done. will have to ask them if the bumper guards may interfere with the sensors they will be putting near the corners.

Just returned from a labor day jaunt and my CD changer is all jammed up. Giving me a "mechan error" message with any attempt to eject or play. I dread tearing up the dash to fix. Any suggestion or experience with this? Thanks.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Did the CD have a stick-on label by chance?? If so, you might need to send the radio in to have it removed if it got jammed in there. If not, I would try removing the negative terminal from the battery so that it kills power to the radio. Wait a few seconds, then power back up and see if you can eject the CD. On most cars, the only thing that totally resets the CD changer is a power cycle like that. You ought to hear the load/eject mechanism do a few hums and ka-chunks when you power back up.

You also could try removing fuses, but the radio has at least two power leads (main and memory) and it's not clear to me which, if not both, would trigger the reset. And normally the fuse for the memory circuit is not clearly identified (may even be tied to an underhood fuse). So the battery trick is often the easiest thing to do. The downside is that it will reset a bunch of other stuff too (clocks, etc).

  • subienewbie2subienewbie2 Member Posts: 458
Other than trying to recycle it I would not recommend you trying to open it up.

I'm sure it would void the warranty. It has a bumper to bumper bring it to the dealer and hope it is not a stick on label.

Pretty brutal review, some funny parts, though.

Not too much substance, though. It's like he read the press materials, drove it around the block, then wrote that blog entry.

    Fuji’s planes bombed Pearl Harbor

Hmm, wasn't the Zero actually made by Mitsubishi?

Subaru claims there are 17 thousand of them

No way, that was the sales goal for calendar year 2005.

I was thinking about writing a rebuttal, perhaps entitled Kojak gets a Crew Cut, but I'll stick to writing about things I actually know a little about. :P

debadged? sounds like you just took off the lettering not the Subaru badge on the rear which would be much harder. As it is an unlettered badge and a nice symbol of stars on a cool carbon fibre blue background I'm fine with it. I also took off the Subaru lettering but like the B9 Tribeca lettering though I might think of taking off the Tribeca and just leave as a B9 the X5 3.0 killer.

I also found a site online where i could order an Alfa Romeo badge and Alfa Romeo lettering from Italy that I though of putting in the empty area I took the Subaru lettering off from.

only other mod i'm doing probably is getting the chrome center caps for my wheel rims as i already have front windows tinted to match the back which looks uniform and nice and all the accessories I wanted. Nothing left to do but enjoy it.

I'm still happy with beca and I've been saying lately if it was a hybrid with a faster tourquier engine with more hp like the Lexus RX 400h or Toyota Highlander Hybrid both of which have more tourque and hp then the Tribeca are genearlly faster believe it or not and might both use the same hybrid engine.

The Lexus RX 400h is too expensive for me and my mom traded her old RX 300 (not the newer 330) and my dad traded his old HIghlander for the new hybrid version so I didn't want the same car as him plus I don't particular like the plain boring styling of the Highlander.

Again if the Tribeca had an engine anything near the mpg and power that those in the afore mentioned produce it would be the ultimate car to me.

Of course now with gas prices hitting over $3.50 and well on their way to $4/gallon after we thought they wouldn't hit or break $3 I feel like I should have given up a little style for the better gas mileage of the Highlander.

Oh well i still love my Beca and could just trade with one of them I guess if i have to go on a long gas guzzling road trip or something.

And I should report after all my complaining about the mpg results i was getting. With the combination of reaching over 2k miles and probably most of all softer driving I have now got as high as 25mpg as some had reported that I did not believe as well as just above and below 20mpg so it has gotten better but the small gas tank kind of sucks as you cringe at the prices when you have to refill and even if it works out to be the same amount of money the less you have to deal with it the better not to mention the pain of having to stop for gas more often with the smaller tank.

And with the recent spike in gas over night it would have been nice to be able to wait till they dropped back down again as they are supposed to in the next few days as i got gass right before the major increase adn though they went down like a cent yesterday I have to get it today which is still way higher (like 50 cents or more per/gallon) then when i got it middle of the week last week which was already higher then beginining of week while my mom on the other hand in teh RX 400h only has to get gas like once a month if that and by the time she needs it again prices will be down from end of last weeks early this weeks Katrina/Labor day record highs.

In its class, Tribeca does quite well. I think only the Murano gets very slightly higher ratings, and it isn't as big nor does it offer a 3rd row.

Hybrids cost a whole bunch more, you'd save money in the long run buying the regular gas versions. You don't buy them to save money.

order an Alfa Romeo badge and Alfa Romeo lettering

If you did that people would universally call it the best looking SUV ever. LOL

Noone mentioned it to me either as option or offer. Mine just came that way as a total surprise which the guy said could be taken off if I didnt like it. I loved it however and it looks great matching the desert beige interior. I saw a white Murano with a dual pinstripe of one in tan/beige and one in silver which is also cool but there is other silver accents on the tribeca and i like the dual beige on the satin white again matching the interior desert beige leather.

I saw another post of someone getting a 5 seat ltd with NAV. So it looks like this is available sooner then expected. Kind of sucks for many of us that had to get the 7 seater just for NAV like myself but there are other benefits like the rear air vent etc. and I didn't mind much considering I figured better to have it then not as when its down its no different other then then supposed extra weight. plus mine came with the rear cargo net instead of rear seat cargo net as that would then be in front of the third row seat when up and i got stuck with the small cargo tray which i never bothered switching with the larger as the dealer wouldnt' take it back.

My only other question is to this new availability of the 5seater ltd with leather i'm assuming and NAV previously unavailable is... is DVD an option and better yet though I like having it and it is a cool conversation piece especially with the ability to play on the front nav screen when in park which is great for tailgating my main question would be will they offer the rear audio inputs wihtout the dvd because that i actuallly use every day and though i wouldnt' have it any other way it prob isn't worth the 1800 dvd option i rarely use for those inputs but currently that is the only way to get them and i'm assuming that will stay the same if the dvd is even an option on teh 5 seat ltd with nav which i also dont see why not.

so while i would therefore still keep the dvd option especially for the audio inputs I guess i dont really need the thirdrow/7 seater if there is no remaing reason to have it. the rear vent though worth it wont be enough and while pleasing ppl that want the 5 seater and the NAV this will piss off ppl who bought early and had to get the 7 pass to get NAV and that is not smart to alienate or betray ppl who bought early as they wouldn't be able to sell any more at all if it were for the early adapters.

Other carr manufac. make you take all the options with their premium model. Ie. the Lexus 400h being the hybrid and top end of that model automatically comes wiht everthing including nav with no option to remove it.

Same should have been done with the Tribeca though options are great this should have been available from teh start and not later to cater to the whiners and alienate the early adaptors.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Constant improvement is a must in this segment, in the whole industry also.

I don't think this creates buyer's remorse, if so noone would ever buy a 2nd computer, much less a new one every 3 years or so.

I noticed that too on a lot of reviews just copying the exact same incorrect in accurate thing that another article says showing they not only are stupid but copy things that that they dont check to be correct.

To me the only real review will be Consumer Reports.

I got email today from subaruofamerica@iceology.com, inviting me to take an online survey. OK, I can do that, so I followed the link. I was first asked to confirm the model (B9 Tribeca), and the model year. The choices were 2003, 2004, 2005. I sent email asking for enlightenment before proceeding.

Well after almost 4 months the xm radio apparently is on the way...sure I could have chosen the trailer hitch...but that was too easy!! Hopefully it will be the right model. my only disappointment about the Tribeca is the lack of an ipod integration, and having to drag cables to make an xm radio work is really a drag
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
40k MSRP maybe, but you can get a 7 pass LTD with NAV and DVD for closer to $35k. List price is pure fantasy nowadays, it almost doesn't matter which SUV you're talking about.

Well, I've officially betrayed Becky (the Tribeca's NAV system), and went ahead and got a Garmin portable, I'm calling her Ginger. The voice is not as sweet as Becky's, though, so I still miss her.

The integrated one does have a bigger screen, plus it lowers the radio volume when it gives commands, portable ones can't. But it does work just as well otherwise, plus I've used it in 2 different vehicles already.

I think we will be watching your comments on this closely. I know I will be. I'm especially interested in your comments of a transportable unit vs. the integrated in-dash units, as you've now experienced both. Things like the radio volume dropping may not sound like a big deal to some, but it may be a bigger deal to others. The size difference of the viewing screen is pretty obvious, but I bet there are a whole lot of other details in which one type of unit is better than the other kind. You can only find that out by living with both types for a while.

I guess the bottom line is: after time, will you have regretted buying it, or will you recommend this type over a factory unit that is nicely integrated into the vehicle (and it's various systems, like the radio). We know the factory unit will be more expensive, and probably better designed. The question is: Is it worth the price difference?

Question: I'm assuming it plugs into a dash power outlet, correct? If so is that a problem? Is it using a power outlet that your cell phone or radar detector might be using, therefore not leaving you a place to plug those items in? If your car has only one or two power outlets, that could be a problem.

I'm putting my comments in the NAV thread, since it will benefit the highest number of people.

FYI, here are my reasoning for buying it (pre-purchase):

    ateixeira, "Navigation / GPS Systems" #259, 4 Aug 2005 4:08 pm

And here are my observations since using the portable unit, so far:

    ateixeira, "Navigation / GPS Systems" #331, 7 Sep 2005 10:23 am
    ateixeira, "Navigation / GPS Systems" #333, 7 Sep 2005 1:18 pm
    ateixeira, "Navigation / GPS Systems" #336, 8 Sep 2005 9:24 am

As you can see I have a lot to say (when is that *not* the case, LOL) so instead of repeating everything here, I'd suggest anyone interested follow those links and subscribe to that discussion.

In summary, so far I'm happy, under $500 is a lot cheaper than buying 3 new cars with NAV. Is it as good? Of course not, but it's still very useful.

You started the thread off right: silly feature- auto locking door locks are more of a hindrance than anything more. First of all- doing a quick search for incidents of "car jacking" on the net took me nowhere. Fact of the matter is there are more ingenious design elements in the B9 that can't be seen during a test drive but you realize as you drive your car every day. I saw a post earlier where someone talked about how his Chevy had temperature controls for the front and the rear and didn't understand why the B9 has Dual Zone for the front passengers- the Chevy is a great car/truck- there's a reason why someone drives a chevy truck vs a B9. Or another where someone thought the A/C system was working against itself because passenger left his/her temperature at say 80 and driver had his temperature at 65- I assure you that you risk no damage to the HVAC system.

There are so many more things to me that define the value quality proposition of a car: fit and finish, serviceability, ride, operations of controls and switches, quality of plastics used- all that the B9 passed with flying colors.

The real problem that lies within this car is the dependability of first model year vehicles- most of the components in this vehicle are manufactured in Japan, including Engine (most all components), Transmission, HVAC, Navigation (Kenwood), Rear Seat Entertainment (Kenwood), Information Display unit including Speedometer and Tachometer- so component wise, I don't foresee parts failing on their own, I see issues with the assembly of the subsystem. The auto workers in Lafayette Indiana are probably just getting used to putting these vehicles together, so as the months pass, I see less and less trouble.

When I bought my B9 ( 7psgr LTD Nav and DVD Beige Interior) I purchased the extended warranty total 8 Years 80,000miles from SofA I would recommend it ($650) to first year owners.

Out of curiosity I paid 35200 +tax for my B9, options include (above mentioned 7psgr limited, pearl white, beige leather, Navigation, DVD) puddle lights, auto dimming rear view mirror, cargo tray and net... What have you paid? I think this may help those with negotiating a price on theirs...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I wouldn't use that against the B9, CR rated Subaru as the most reliable car brand for MY2004 (just 8 defects per 100 vehicles), ahead of Lexus and everyone else that builds cars in Japan.

Most Subarus are made in Lafeyette, Indiana (Outback, Legacy, Baja, and B9 Tribeca). Hoosiers should be proud.

Roto Subaru in ArlingtonHeights, IL is discounting the B9's from $3000-3500. If they ever put a larger, more powerful engin in it, I will buy one. I loves my Limited GT and Outback Limited, just not enough power.
