Even though some shops bake paint, they cannot do it as well as the factory. For one thing, shops are limited in the temperatures and times they can apply to a built car, which has lots of parts not able to be heated (trim, glass, fabric, etc). In the factory, they are only painting and baking the metal body, which makes a big difference. All else equal, the factory paint/cure process is the best you can get.
I spoke with Liberty - Subaru auctioned the Tribecas to dealers . They come with full factory warantees, even for rust through! The only catch is that they are considered" Used Cars" and are not eligible for rebates ,subaru financing OR leasing Their pricing IMO is not low enough unless you can pay cash. Base 5 cloth is 26K - a loaded 7 LTD is at about 32k.
I'm about to take the plunge into a 7Ltd.
FYI - I'll looking for a 24 month lease @ 18K miles per year - The residual is 67% for that car with a MF 0f .00135.
I would like to thank the Subaru crew and every one else on these threads for all the help and Info. I welcome the opportunity to return the favor.
While Fitz Subaru did a fantastic job on our Legacy bumper, the work done on my Miata (twice, different shops) left much to be desired. It can be good, but often isn't, put it that way.
Charlie - thanks for the info. $26k is tempting, but I'd still want to spend the $32k and can't afford that right now with the condo payments.
filed a complaint today when they replaced my cracked fog lights. said that I heard it was a known issue and just wanted it in writing in case the replacement struts come after my initial factory warranty for minor issues runs out ...
We are both assuming facts not in evidence - I do not think it unusual to discount damaged vehicles & basically wholesale them. Insurance will pay only what their adjuster say to pay - the option of writeoff is certainly an option - but not a good financial one.
Rather than wondering about all - Call SOA and ask them how the process works.
Auto factories do not paint fully assembled cars. Raw bodies are put on the line (body, doors hoods etc. They are painted - then the doors etc are removed from the body and the body, doors etc go to assembly areas where all the goodies are added to them. Once built up, those very same assemblies meet up again on the final assembly line and are mated back up to the body they started with.
You can not get an completed vehicle re-painted on an auto assembly line.
You can not get an completed vehicle re-painted on an auto assembly line.
I realize that but I wouldn't be suprised to find they have a repair area/paint shop to take care of minor issues found.
But you're right - we are both make huge presumptions.
What bothers me is that many Subaru owners like to tout the greatness of the brand and the product but they are perfectly accepting of them selling "seconds". What would the reaction be if Honda or Toyota were doing the same?
No chance of having it run through the system so the Sirius/XM information shows up on the NAV screen? I am still investigating and will post with any answers.
the radio is a pain in the butt or should say peice of junk. i have the 7 seater with nav but no rear seat entertainment, i have been dealing with the dealership for awhile because my goal is to add satelite radio, rear dvd/tv, and back up camera. i finally got all the wiring specs from the dealership because no shop will touch it without info. I also finally got the dealership to order me the wiring harness which was only 100.00. that is what plugs into the radio front monitor so i can add the rear dvd/tv- hopefully with that i can have it modified at a shop for everything i need. i will take pictures of it and post for anyone who is interested because that was a pain to get. should be here by tuesday :confuse: also anyone wanting the wiring specs just let me know and i will post. if anyone has any info for me to make things easier for me please let me know ASAP- Thanks
the navigation isn't really an older model- i talked to kenwood and it is a new model based off the 4100 but it was custom built for subaru- it does have all the new functions minus some things subaru didnt want on it, it even uses the new dvd map system
Would like to see those specs. Thanks. When I went to my dealership and asked about the Sirius and IPOD hookup and he looked at me like I had two heads. I then go to the local Tweeter store and the resident "expert" tech said no harnesses have been made, wait six months and check back. I also asked to see if I could upgrade the speakers and add an amp, again, won't touch it because of the "supposed" spaghetti behind the dash. This is really frustrating.
its next on my to do list over the holidays along with removing the Tribeca badge on the back
now that they fixed the squeak and I know I wont have to look for a lemon exchange :lemon: car because they fixed the problem finally
if you jumper the ground sensor in the back I doubt it will bypass the ability to have full NAV entry functionality while driving. I think it will ONLY allow you to view the DVD on the front screen while driving.
If applying the emergency brake while driving is the same as jumpering the thr ground on the E brake - then I can tell you it does not permit using Nav input.
I tried it while driving on a highway today, I applied the emergency brake and it made no difference to the nav. It appears the nav is looking at tire rotation.
That's the color we have. It seems to hide the dirt pretty well, but I imagine silver does that equally as well. I just washed our new Tribeca for the first time using that Mr. Clean system. It does a great job and eliminates the need to wipe off the rinse water. Also, no bucket is needed. BTW, for those of you with garages, I had a plumber run a hot water line next to the cold water line, inside the garage. It allows me to use warm water to wash the car.

Not sure if that was a prototype, but those are clearly computer generated 3D models laid on top of "stock" background settings. May have been part of a marketing or product planning excercise.
How can you tell they are CG's - the landscape seen through the car is detailed. It fooled me. The wheels and roof rails look fake - Isn't it possible that they started with a real car and photo and then made changes on the computer to evolve the design??
The front is too truckish ( for lack of a better word), but I like the rear end on this better than the current model. This also appears to be shorter. This does confirm that new front theme was proposed before they hired what's his name from Alfa.
Look at the shadows on the ground and some of the shiny/spectral highlights on the vehicle -- they are good, but not quite right/realistic for the settings. Also, they are similar in all the settings!
Just got one myself and noticed the same thing- you can go to an auto parts store and get an "ashtray" that fits into the cupholder that can serve well as a coin holder (I don't smoke)- so far, so good- they are about 7 dollars...
I hereby grant you Lifetime Membership Privileges in the OCD Club.
I'm so proud of you. *sniff*
Those photochops are not improvements.
In fact, to me the car they are trying to show looks a lot smaller, perhaps the intent it to show what the Impreza-based people mover that might be coming might look like.
reuben2: congrats and welcome. Join us also in the Subaru Crew threads under Owners Clubs.
I recently found this dealer who has several tribecas, all styles and he is selling them for thousands less than all other dealers. All cars are referred to as used despite most of them having under 25 miles. I am going to visit them is a few days and find out where they came from and visually inspect them. But I must say I am not to sure if I will buy one if I find out that it is one of the cars from Indiana. What would you do? http://www.billkolbjrsubaru.com/preowned/index.cfm?&so=0&sort=0&CFID=5912824&CFT- OKEN=55128538
Yup, hot water. There was an existing cold water line, coming from the basement, that ran along a wall in my garage to the faucet. I asked a plumber to run a hot water line next to it, and there's a 'Y' connector at the faucet so I can have warm water.
I live in the NYC area so it gets pretty cold here, and the warm water keeps my teeth from chattering when I wash the car in the winter.
took a look at the unit NAV display. it took 15 mins to pull out. following the directions given earlier posted... was a quick pull out. It is a Kenwood unit. I have pictures I will have to find a place to post them and can link to...
anyway there is an open Video (RCA type) plug in the back and a open plug that is a 4 wire connector not being used (wonder if that is where you connect a microphone).
too tough to figure out which connector is which to jumper the emergency brake signal to trigger the video to play on the front screen always.
did find a contact switch at the emergency brake foot pedal. when you push in the emergency brake it pushes in this contact switch. so I was thinking its easier to just fool the switch. BUT !!! I realized just manually pushing the switch causes the red warning light to come on on the dash and the daytime running lights turn off! headlights still work, but the daytime lights go off. they are linked to the switch @#$@#$#@ because when you are parked with the EBrake on the car turns off the daytime lights.
The E-brake switch may also affect ABS and a bunch of other stuff. The output from that switch most likely feeds into the body integrated unit, from which it goes out to control numerous other functions, including the front screen DVD lockout. If you download (from techinfo.subaru.com) or find the tech service docs for the Tribeca, it will have wiring diagrams you can use to find the correct wire coming out of the body integrated unit and going to the DVD system. It should also describe whether it's a ground, +12V, etc... at that point (my guess would be ground).
Must be, those prices are amazing. Let us know what you find? Check out the paint closely, see if you observe any orange peel on the finish or any wavy body lines. Ask about the warranty and what is *not* covered.
There could also have been glass damage, and since the windshield contributes to the safety of the passengers in various ways, it'd be nice to have the factory installed glass as long as possible (link).
I have the pdf wiring diagrams but what I need is a physical diagram showing me where the connector actually is located. there is a TV Monitor shown and a Multi Function Monitor. this is separate from the Rear TV monitor or Rear Video system diagrams.
I see the EBrake ground switch shown on the drawing coming into the TV Monitor. but can figure out where that connector is physically in the car. is it the back of the Navigation screen that I pulled out or is there another box somewhere behind the dash?
I guess I just need a diagram that shows where each of the units are physically located so I know where to look for that connector.
I doubt the E-Brake switch affects the ABS at all... why would you think it would affect the ABS?
Many auto accessory suppliers sell a brake light that plugs into the hitch receiver and connects to the trailer wiring. These lights are available with various truck logos (Ford, Chevy, GMC, etc.) but no Subaru logo. It should be possible to create a custom light with a message like DRIVER IS WATCHING TV for those who are trying to modify their DVD systems to play on the front screen when the vehicle is in motion.
Because a well-known old-school Subaru rally trick to disengage ABS (and thus enable brake-skid turns) involves pulling up the e-brake lever one click! I checked this in my 02 Outback (4EAT) and it did not seem to affect ABS on that vehicle, but did in other models at the same time.
The main point is that the brake switch feeds into body integrated unit and potentially can impact a lot of things, as you noticed.
Do your diagrams show wire color codes? (they should) If you don't physically know what unit you're looking for, you can usually take the number of wires in a bundle, along with their connectors, and figure it out that way. I would focus on the body integrated unit and look at it's various outputs on the wiring diagram; there is most likely one output that goes to the DVD system and that's what needs to be intercepted.
yeah I tried looking at the color codes and the number of wires but nothing matched up easily... so I dont think I have the rear wire diagram for the NAV display screen.
If you search the net for: "Kenwood KNA-VC300" you will find pictures of the microphone and talk switch with what appears to be a plug that would connect into the 4100. It's available for about $99. However, there have been comments on this board that the 4100 is custom built for SOA - so it may not work.
Plus, I found this at a place that sells it - "Optional Unit Required" would probably stop me from buying the microphone to try it out:
With the Kenwood KNA-VC300 Microphone & Talk Switch just talk, and enjoy high precision voice recognition of navigation operations. The "voice control" system (optional unit required), together with touch-panel control, offers control which is like having a conversation. Etc.
The Kenwood KNA-VC300 works with both KNA-DV3100 and KNA-DV4100 Kenwood Navigation Systems.

7 Ltd Wht/grey int. got it from Flemington Subaru. pleasant experience but the best was the drive home - about 35 miles - this car is great and I averaged 20.4 mpg. in a fair amount of traffic too.
Slightly more than half of owners report mileage averages above 20mpg. For a while there I was collecting reports and that's how it panned out.
The good news is the engines are all still green. Mileage tends to improve with age, and I mean 15k miles, not 1k break-in miles. My Forester didn't reach peak efficiency until about the 2nd year of ownership.
Congrats again. White, eh? Did you get NAV or DVD? If not are you thinking about adding aftermarket equipment to it?

Even if it is repaired by a factory - it is still a second - to use your term.
From an earlier post on the subject it sounds like the dealers involved make full disclosure and I ASSUME
Laws differ from state to state but there are threshold amounts that once crossed, any repaired damage must be disclosed to the buyer.
Just read subienewbie's post and we used the same language...
They can't hide it if it was sold as a used car. I think carfax would show that.

I am new to the forum. I just bought a 7-passenger Tribeca Limited, and love it so far!
One thing I have noticed (which I did not notice when shopping) is there is no coin holder.
Has anyone found a creative solution to this?
Thanks!

At most it was sheet metal damage that has been repaired. Or possibly just paint damage. These units were not under water.
If they have a factory warranty (maybe no paint warranty) and they look good, why wouldn't you want to save thousands of dollars?
Still lovin' the warm water idea. Brilliant.
