Does anyone know if the '06 & up Azeras can be programmed to automatically turn on the headlamps when the windshield wipers are in use? Headlights are required in some states whenever you use the wipers.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Unfortunately...no, the headlights can't be programmed to come on with the wipers. I wish they could be...it's something that makes complete and total sense to be honest. This was discussed a while back and some folks thought it simply lazy, however...when you see how many folks will drive with no lights on while it's raining, it would seem to be a very good safety measure.
  • rminorrminor Member Posts: 40
I had an '05 VW Jetta TDI that had this feature. If the wipers were on 5 seconds the lights came on. In fact, that car had a lot of features my luxury Azera doesn't have. Fortunately that includes reliability. That's why I traded it.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Well...it certainly needs to be an industry standard, that's for sure.

Do you have an '06 Azera and if so how many miles are on her??

I have an '06 also..Black on black Ultimate..only 14K miles on it...I haven't had any of the problems/concerns with the struts, etc.The car has only ben tothe dealer for a few courtesy oil changes....FE is ~29 on the highway...only problem that I'm having is the pinstriping is starting to peel on the 2 front quarters...Runs great and ride is very good...My BMW, Lexus and MB friends just shake their heads in amazement ....I think I'm going to have to replace the original battery soon...I have 3 Hyundai now and had to replace all the batteries at about 3 yrs of service...Florida heat is tough on them....Not impressed with the Genesis yet; haven't driven it.....Infiniti G37 with the 330 hp looks good...

What is the build date on your 2006? :confuse:

That will be found on a plate located on the pillar between the drivers door and the rear door.

    The reason for asking:
I'm trying to determine if Azeras built before Dec. 05, 2005 have different
and better quality factory shocks than those later built vehicles.
I suspect from your discription of your ride, that you may have an earlier built vehicle. :surprise:

    Thanks in advance.

    snag

See post 1002 under Azera 2007.....Appears strut mounting assembly replacement solved the problem there....
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Cool, cool...I JUST replaced my original battery and I'm beginning to think it was the culprit behind my lights dimming when the climate control system is on. With the new battery in place, the only time my lights dim now is when I play my music loud.

I hate the pinstriping because you never know what it will do. If you really want the pinstriping, take it back and have them replace it. If not...use a hair dryer, detailer's spray and a soft plastic blade to scrape it up.

The Azera is also my 3rd Hyundai and from the looks of things, the Genesis Coupe may be #4 in our garage. I would go with the sedan, but...we don't need two large sedans and the Azera is paid for.

Do yourself a favor and go test drive the Genesis before you pass judgement. As much as I love my Azera, the Genesis is definitely head & shoulders above it.

    Re: Azera Built b4 Dec. 05, 2005

I am the recent buyer (May 08) of a used 2006 Azera Limited, production date Nov. 2005; miles at purchase about 20K, it was traded in with about 17,500, but was driven for a while by the Financial Manager at the HONDA dealer where I puchased the traded-in Azera (traded for smaller Honda, not an Accord). Traded by a gentleman in his early 70's (I'm in early 60's); he was looking for better MPG for his road trips. I know who he is and have talked to him personally here in town.
I am new to the "forums" and have been educating myself concerning ALL aspects of the Azera. It appears the "hot issue" for 2006/2007/ and maybe part of 2008 Azera's is the suspension/front strut problems.
Yesterday I went to the local Hyundai dealer for some additional conversation (have already picked their brains on other minor issues/education efforts on other visits), regarding what was the "as built" configuration of this Azera, the "bill of material BOM" for the front stuts.
Low and behold the original part numbers for the "early" built 2006's is the current replacement part. That is the 54611 - 3L040. The TSB for this issue is/has replaced "tonking" struts (when accomplished) pulling out the 3L041's, and putting in the original part numbers. The parts manager also answered by question has to "what P/N" what be used for repair/replacement, if needed, on my Nov.2005 production date car, and it still would be the 3L040.
He researched is "purchased" data base (includes customer out of pocket, and warranty purchases), and NO struts have been transacted by this dealer for any Azera being serviced. In other words, no customer has either complained, or won their argument with them that would have lead to a "strut replacement outcome". The parts manager is/was aware of the "tonking/noise" complaint that out there in the world of Azera's. But again, has not had the need to issue "replacement stuts" for any reason.
I am aware that "Upper Strut Mount" P/N 54630 - 3L100 has been declared has a possible fix in this issue of "3L041" strut complaints. Possible that one or both components have been part of the problem.
OK, what about my early production Azera and its ride? No, it is not always the smooth ride over some of the rougher city streets, or repaired roads. I don't have the "tonk/clunk" that the later production cars have had. My research indicates this Azera ride will never be as mushy as say an old "boat Mercury or big Ford, or other big GM boat. My experience is the HONDA Accords right at times just as rough. Matter of fact, Consumer Report states that is their only finding on the Accord, and Odessey Vans, they both ride rough.
Regarding MPG on my Azera. I did a road test with newly full tank (auto shutoff), and reset computer MPG, and entered Interstate Highway for a 100 mile ride and did 27.9/28.0 MPG. My experience with city driving is yes only about 14MPG, maybe up to 17 if I add some "upper miles city driving" with it. So I'm looking at about 22 MPG average, not really that bad.
    Thanks, Retired Dad

Enjoy your new (used) car! My bought-new 2006 Limited (built June 2006) is going strong with nearly 30,000 miles on it and no problems save the occasional sympathetic vibration from the rear package shelf if I get too bass-happy. I switched away from Honda (owned 2 Accords, a '77 and a '90) because I wanted a larger car and the new Accord styling was too plain, but I didn't want to pay the Avalon or Acura or Lexus price, and I've been fully satisfied with the Azera... :shades:

My Azzie was also built in Nov. '05. Never had a problem. The problems with the Azera seem to be so random. Hope you got a good one. Mine sure was.

Took my '06 in yesterday to get the pinstriping replaced..took about an hour and they did a good job...the striping is silver to match the wheels....Also, drove a Genesis Premium..black on black..good power and the seats were more supportive that the Azera, but the sticker was $40k...I was thinking about tradng my '06 in, but they wouldn't deal...it only has 12k miles on it...I don't really need the large car, so I'm going to look at the G 37S coupe....Premium gas, but more fun....

I'm really happy to find this forum. Please forgive me....but, I am really not into cars. I fell in love with the Azera when I rented one in June 2006...and traded in my 2004 Maxima in August 2006 for one...without that rental, I never would have considered a Hyundai. I have about 19,000 miles on my Azera! My normal driving is just back and forth to work about 10 miles....Last month, while driving 70 miles per hour in 95 degree heat, my car started making a huge noise...couldn't hear the radio...sounded like a huge big thud....almost like I was in a wind tunnel. Immediately called the dealer and arranged to bring the car in...They couldn't reproduce the sound (I was in a 65 mile per hour zone and the dealer was about 20 miles from that in a 55 miles per hour zone.) All was well until I went back to my daughter's home this weekend and drove in the same conditions...On the super highway, hearing that noise again, it became increasingly worse and a panel fell from the right hand side of the underside of my car. My husband was able to take it off completely so we could continue on. Now, the panel is totally ruined from the scraping against the pavement. I had an appointment to bring the car into the dealer for this problem...Then yesterday, the panel indicator on the radio/CD no longer shows what is on....I have no idea what radio chanel is on....Has anyone else had either problem???? I love the AZera and these are the first issues that I have had.i

    Hey Nashna,
We bought new 2006 Azera and so far have 40,000+ miles. Last month the underside plastic panel fell down while driving. Made helluva racket. I tied it up with wire and the next day wife took it to dealer and they replaced it with no hassles. The plastic area around the 2 front screws holding it in place broke away.
The whole time at the dealer was less than an hour, no charges, all warranty work and parts.

First time I've heard or the radio problem though.

From our experience the Azera's warranty claims are alive and well, its a no hassle deal at Groppetti in Visalia, Calif.

We'll buy another when the time comes.

Good luck on the radio/cd ...Warranty is only 3yr/36k for this item
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Sorry to hear about your issue with the undercarriage panel and the radio. The good news, both should be covered by the warranty with no hassle.

I never had a problem with my radio, but my clock was messed up within the 1st week and of course, it was replaced with no fuss or muss.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
101649...glad to hear everything was taken care of with no hassle. That definitely makes things easier to deal with.

If you drove the Genesis that was $40K it had to be the 3.8 w/Tech Package. Personally, I would pony up the extra $2K and get the 4.6 w/Tech Package and get a whole lot more!!!

Be patient, they'll be dealing soon enough.

I recently had to take my Azera in to get looked at because my passenger side fog light was taking on water. I had replaced the bulb and went to a car wash, when I came out...the light was out. The next morning, upon inspection, I saw that the bulb had shattered inside the housing. I pulled it, replaced it and everything was fine until we got hit with a monstrous thunderstorm that I was out driving in. Once again, the same light was out and this time...water was seen built up inside the housing.

Well...the service department looked at it and found the seal around the fog light lens had failed. So...they ordered a new one and will be replacing it when it comes in.

I haven't seen this as an issue (meaning I haven't really seen anyone else post this problem), but just something to keep an eye on should you start realizing your fog lights seem to be going out on you for some strange reason.

Did you replace your driving lights with after market bulbs??? I think earlier that you were going Euro yellow....Also, do you pull the front wheel and remove the fender liner to access the driving lights??? I used the Luminex yellow film on the drivers ...same stuff that the ALMS cars use..Gives it a nice Euro look..I got 2 bulk sheets and it cost less that $20...very easy to apply...
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
101649....I did indeed replace them with the hyper yellow bulbs.

Actually...you don't have to pull the wheel off, whichever side you're working on, turn the front wheels the opposite way. Then you just pull the wheel well liner apart from under the lip of the fender to gain access behind the fog light.

    How durable is that Luminex?
  • 101649101649 Member Posts: 192
very thick and easy to apply....It is used on the American Lemans Series race cars..The GT 1 and GT 2 classes have to run "French Yellow" lights (Luminex yellow film)and the P 1 and P2 cars run the bright whites..All cars must have lights on whenever they are on the race track...The yellow and white lights let the drivers know the class of car behind or overtaking them...i am very pleased with the product...I think the drivers are 7"x 3 1/2 " and I just ordered 2 pieces that were 8X4"...They have an assortment of colors available...I'm pondering the "black out" smoke color for the taillights...
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Can you please provide a link to where I might be able to find this stuff? I'm interested in the blackout film for the tails as well.

Also, I would love to see some pics of how the lights look with the yellow film over them.

Has anyone had any experience with the after market dash wood kits?
  • cdmuilecdmuile Member Posts: 152
I installed a 31 piece "wood" kit on my '06. Check out my pictures on the other Azera forum. It was not too difficult. Be sure to line up the pieces carefully as there's no going back.

Is there a "Manual Mode" on the rearview mirror of the Azera 2008?

If you are driving during the day time, and someone behind you has their high beams on, the "Auto" dimmer does not work.

Is there a way to dim the rearview mirror in a "Manual" mode?
    Thanks, Jerry
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
There is no manual function for the rear view mirror. However, you are aware that the mirror doesn't really "dim", it takes on a greenish hue when the lights hit the sensor. You could have a faulty sensor (take it back and get it looked at) or the lights aren't hitting it correctly (try and adjust the mirror a bit), or...if you have tinted windows, that could affect how the sensor perceives the light as well.

Okay, just came from reading it online. Well...pretty much says what Hyundai has said all along...they've made a luxury sedan. Great highway cruiser, but far from being a sport sedan. The funny thing, folks are expecting it to be a sport sedan simply because of the RWD and the power output. No...Hyundai has never made the mistake that Nissan did by putting the sport sedan tag on their car and trying to live up to it. While the Genesis may get knocked for high speed cruising, I can almost guarantee you that for the average driving that most do on a daily basis, the Genesis more than delivers a compliant, comfortable ride that most won't complain about.

did you move forward on the yellow tint material for your driving lights ???
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Actually, I'm not moving forward with the yellow film at this time as I have the hyper yellow bulbs in now. Now that my fog light housing was replaced, there are no issues with bulb burn out due to moisture. However, I will be planning on the tinted film for my tail lights to give them more of a blacked out look. The plan is to lay it over the tail light and trim it, but not cover the back up lights as they go with the chrome trim nicely. I was also thinking about the smoked tint on my headlights.
  • 101649101649 Member Posts: 192
I'm thinking about the tail lights also...won't do the headlights...I'm not planning on doing much to the Azera since I plan to trade/sell it in Nov and get a G 37S coupe....Might give the Azera to my wife and trade/sell her Sonata....have to check the resale values....
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
I feel you. Me...I'm keeping mine till the wheels fall off, so sky's the limit for me. I know when I traded my '02 Sonata in after 4 years and 105K miles, they gave me $5K for it. My Azera (paid $26,100) for it just over 2.5 years ago, it has just over 56K miles on it and trade in value is about $15K. That's better than our Saturn Outlook we have...purchased it for $38K it's just over a year old and trade in value on it is only $22K.

I ordered and installed a dash kit from WOW. Boy, does it make the dash pop. I read the directions a few dozen times, then started with the small stuff. I left the big centre dash section for last. Peeled half the 3m backing off, then the rest to finish the job. There were some small problem spaces of alignment, cause baby when you touch a small piece down, it's down. But they're hardly noticeable to the eye (except for wives/girlfriends).Took about 2 1/2-3 hours. About $170 and I' m happy.
I ordered and installed the yellow plastic for the fog lights. Made a template, cut out the plastic, put it on like I would a window tint and it looks great plus protects the glass. Once again, I'm happy. BYE.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Congrats on everything you've done! The key to the whole thing is that YOU'RE happy with how everything turned out. Good luck with any future mods you may set out to do!
  • 144tap144tap Member Posts: 44
Thanks for the feedback Mike. This forum has provided me the basics for about all the mods I've done; the replaced front shocks, new 'H-less' grill, strut tower bar, 65w high beam bulbs, yellow plastic for the fog lights, and the wood dash kit. I'd already had the rear windows tinted at the time of purchase(Aug.06), Escondido,CA, plus a black dash mat to cut window glare. I really do plan on keeping this pearl white Zerra till "the wheels fall off". I must admit to a time when the Genesis caught my interest, but I wanted it to be about a foot longer and NOT look like a Sonata from the rear !!!!

    "I've done; the replaced front shocks . . . "

Have you indeed found some other than stock replacement front shocks for our Azeras? :confuse:

Or are you referring to TSB 07-50-007?

  • 144tap144tap Member Posts: 44
I indeed had the noise in the front struts, that hollow knocking sound. BUT, the rt. ft. strut still had the noise, even after the 3L040 replacement. So, I took the plastic beauty cover off the tower and leaned on the fender with my left hand over/on the shock tower and sort of bounced up/down a little. I could feel the sound in my hand. My SM at the dealer felt it too. They had it for a week before finally taking the top portion off a new strut and using that to solve the problem. Oh well, N/C and a free Elantra. Questions are:

How far have you been since the 040s were installed?

Do you have any of the porposing, wallowing, oscillating
and or galloping that many others are complaining about? :confuse:

Q# 1; Last March with 19k to now with 23k=4k.
Q# 2; It's rock solid, I enjoy taking it into triple digits, (right time, right place) the ride is so good. My neighborhood has a lot of weight transfer corners, but I haven't allowed myself to push it into an oversteer/understeer mode. I guess my desire to keep the shinny side up is to much. And a couple of other things please:
Let us all remember a great American racer was laid to rest this past weekend: Phil Hill. And:
Being a retired fireman I ask of you all reading this that you remember to put your flag out to honor those who died 9/11/01. Thanks.

I have a 2006 black Azera. What would you say are some mods that are inexpensive and easy to do that make a difference in either performance or appearance? I have on my list a rooftop BMW style antenna and possibly painting the brake calipers. Any other mods you would recommend that are easy and inexpensive?

Thanks in advance for your ideas.
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
The BMW style antenna is slick, I put one on my 'Zera when I first got it. I also painted my calipers (silver the first time) and I'm going to paint them either red or blue the next go 'round. Some other things that aren't too expensive, replacing the grille, maybe adding side vent visors, there's a few folks that have added the wood dash kit, there's a rear window spoiler, trunk lip spoiler, changing the headlights to HID's or upgrading the bulb, maybe changing the fog lights to yellow (euro look). Change the side view mirrors with the ones that have the turn signal lights, or add side marker lights on the front fender.

Performance-wise...well, the car already has a cold air intake system, but you might want to go with a shorter version, if you wanna work with the original system, maybe try a K&N filter. You can install a front strut brace to help with the handling, upgrade the brakes to ceramic pads (rockauto.com has Akebono ceramic pads for under $60/pr.)

A couple of websites (if you don't already know) are:

    Korean Auto Imports

    Seoulful Racing

I mean...sky is the limit, the question is...what do you consider to be too expensive and how much of a change are you looking for? Visit my page and you can see some of the things I've done with mine so far.

    Good luck!!!

Did you lower your '06 by cutting the coils??? If so, did it affect the tire positioning or alignment??? camber/caster/ etc...
  • allmet33allmet33 Member Posts: 3,557
Sorry...I'm not one of the ones that has lowered their Azera. Mine is still at the factory height. Only thing I did was put a 20" wheel & tire package on so it eats up some of that gap without lowering.
  • ricwhitericwhite Member Posts: 292
Thanks for the suggestions. I have the K&N filter. That was an easy and inexpensive mod. I also ordered some yellow film for the fog lights. I think I will paint the calipers red. I would upgrade the headlight bulbs, but the last time I did that (on my VW Passat) I ended up replacing them every 4-6 months. I hated driving and then "poof" a bulb goes out and I get pulled over by the police. Happened FAR too often. The life of those high performance bulbs were not good.

I saw a reference to the strut brace. It was only around $100, but I wonder if that really boosts handling enough to be worth the cost.

Has anybody done anything with lighting? Also, has anybody de-badged the Azera? I was thinking about removing the H from the back and the Hyundai and the limited from the back. I noticed, however, that under the "Hyundai" badge the paint was flat and not glossy. If I removed the badge, I'd have a 10 inch rectangle of flat black which would be noticeable. Oddly, under the "Limited" it was the normal glossy paint.
