    At least one independent here

In Brentwood, the movie on the marquee is "Confidentially Connie", from 1953. The town has a very Hill Valley look to it.

Second car from right looks like a 53 Packard.

Wow, thanks @magnette - I would never have had ID’ed that as an Austin.

Aside from that Packard is another indie, a mid-50s Kaiser under the movie marque.

First on the right - 1951 Buick Special.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Looks like a Ford F-100 pickup next to the Kaiser, a pickup was a rare sight in a suburban setting back then, in fact they weren't all that common in rural areas. (I went to college in rural southwestern New York state.)

Approaching on the left - A 3 year body style '46, '47, or '48 Plymouth.
Turning into the parking space - A '52 Plymouth.

Disneyland in Anaheim, CA circa 1962 apparently. Very space-age. My thoughts looking at this for the first time were the usual "I'd like to have that... or maybe that.. or... OOOOOH!".

other than the tan MB SL convertible, and the mid-50s yellow Ford PU, not seeing anything else to move my

I was a child, but I just don't remember that many 4-door Corvairs, like we see in the pictures. I only seem to remember coupes and convertibles.

I drive by a house occasionally in the next time that has a gen 1 4 door in the driveway. Looks a bit tired but not horrible. Period like seafoam green color.

There is a 1st-gen 4-door up the street from me that comes out in the summer, dark blue, appears to have been restored a long time ago.

Not just an SL in Anaheim, but a 300SL roadster - once trailing far behind the gullwing in value, now a 7 figure car in its own right and would have been an exotic then. Nice Camelot Continental two cars in front of the MB, and a late model Rambler Cross Country between them.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
The roadster version of the 300SL replaced the Gullwing coupe entirely ca. 1958. It was a better car car, easier to get in and out of and didn't get the driver wet if he opened the door in the rain.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,565
Yep, 1958 would be the first official model year in the USDM, I think, existed until 1963, but the late ones are pretty rare. Would have cost around 12K new around 1962, so not a cheap car, but time treated it well.

No 60 Fords in that pic, fortunately the MB makes up for it.

That monorail looks like the one from Thunderbirds - although without the strings on the puppets
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
On the Brentwood picture I did pick out the Kaiser and that was why I posted it but only realised the Packard when I saw the rear light
What was the two tone old coupe immediately beyond the Packard? - my thought was a Studebaker for some reason but it looks more GM to me now
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Back in Disneyland is the large blue car under the bridge just beyond the roof of the Rambler another, but older (58) Lincoln? it is one car beyond the yellow pickup
Also another Lincoln - one you call a Camelot - next to the two tone blue Ford wagon below the bridge in the further row

I did think I could see a M-B Ponton - day colour - in the distance - it's below the R on the sign RICHFIELD obscured by a white station wagon

I'm glad you posted it - the car is so rare now - I think I've seen about two in ten years (at car shows) and even the subsequent A110 is virtually extinct now in Britain

They must have been really rare when new in Canada - did the British Embassy or Crown Commission or similar have a couple perhaps?

Andy's mystery car is the late and largely unlamented 2nd-gen Infiniti Q45. I liked the original Q45 quite a bit but this replacement version was generic foreign-car non-prestige luxo-sedan. It could have been a Rover, a Mitsu, a Toyota, you name it.

Perhaps it is to help with showing the corners of the wings when reversing - the new look cars like this might have been a bit hard to place on the road when reversing if people were used to upright previous generation cars like the pre 48 Fords?

Having said that even Mr Magoo might see the two trams / streetcars
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,565
that Infiniti has styling directly influenced by the MB W140 (and maybe to a lesser extent even the W126) IMO. Not as blatant as the XF30 Lexus LS though.

Good catch on the Ponton, magnette, I didn't notice it. I agree, appears to be a 4cyl model.

Stockholm, 1973 - something is different from the others:

The convertible appears to be a 50 Ford, probably Canadian, along with a 52/54 Canadian, probably a Meteor.

quite the mix of nationalities there. A few Volvos of course as expected. pair of 140s and a 120.

On the customized Ford ragtop, if you look close you can see the grind marks or the lead or bondo filler used to make the addition. Not sure what those pieces were from.

    At Stockholm Esso
White Opel Kapitan Wagon - I think that's a Caravan - nearest car parked to right of TransAm
And the dark wagon at the pumps is a German Ford Taunus - related to our Ford Cortina mk4

Tried posting pictures but its not working
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,565
Also in Stockholm - MB W110 and W114/115, Renault 12 at the pumps, on the other side of the pumps a small car I can't quite place right now.

    Another monorail-related view:

  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
I thought that small car in Stockholm might be a Simca 1000 but the angle and obstructions make a clear view difficult

    Your new monorail view...

I see another Hillman Minx (light blue) though it looks odd with whitewalls - its just beyond the rear of that blue /white Pontiac EDIT - 56 Chieftan?
I am beginning to think Hillman might have outsold VW after all !!
That two tone green streamlined car - I think that is a Packard Clipper - perhaps 46?

The Minx might have had a very hot period for perhaps a year or so here. There seem to be a number in period pics, especially in this region.

The streamlined/torpedo body is a GM, I believe, hard to tell what. With the fender shapes, likely a 46-48 something.

I saw this Minx several years ago at a local small town car show, nut and bolt restoration, like a new car. Owner said he had one as a teen and loved it, so when he found this one neglected, he embarked on a labor of love:

Fair enough on the streamlined car - I thought Packard based on no real clue !

I think the old Minx - this generation (the Audax model) was very successful here and it does show in lots of European shots too. It did get a bit tired looking after a few years which is why they launched the Super Minx family

My dad had a 1959 Sunbeam Rapier which was of course the two door version of this although was too early for me to get to drive it - I was nine when they sold it - and apart from the first year when it had a load of problems it ws generally a good car though I suspect like all of them the rust was not kind to it - not that it was a serious issue with our family - it was succeeded by a Vauxhall Victor.

The Minx family - right through to the Arrow (Hunter) models - had a right side handbrake (on RHD ) so the handbrake was between the seat and the drivers door. I did drive an Arrow Minx a few times when first driving and it was no problem getting used to hill starts with it

That restored Minx must be quite a rarity there now

    Hi Andy

The Chevrolet is a 51 - either a Styleline or a Fleetline although I have no idea what the difference would be, and there is a Volvo 544 across the street
