It's the FJ Cruiser all right, and as far as "Just another 4Runner underneath anyway." that's not quit true. It's built on the Land Cruiser Prado, found mostly in Europe and Australia. I've driven it, and it's quit a machine.

It's a Dodge of some kind, MY about 1961. I think I can make out "D-O-D-G-E" on rear the flank of the car. It looks very Chrysler-like so it's probably the top-of-the-line model but the name escapes me... Andre?

Not sure of the year, late 60's early 70's, but it's a Volvo P1800es. :confuse:
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,465
I think the black Dodge is a 62, no fins. Maybe an 880?

    Right on the Volvo
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Actually the name is simply 1800ES (no P in front), the P1800 was the earlier fastback coupe,
    See here.

    I know, "picky, picky".

Close, 1964 Dodge Custom 880. In essence, the last Desoto.
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
As unbelievable as it might seem now, I'm sure at least one person looked at a Camry and said, "No I'd rather have this."

They would have been better to buy this:

Wasn't the last DeSoto made in 1961?
  • johno111johno111 Member Posts: 114
#1 is a Chevy Corsica from the early 90's, famous rust bucket, it needed a tray all around it to catch the parts as they fell off.
#2 is an early 50's Packard, with his gray Lincoln 4 door friend next to him, about a 62 or 63.
  • johno111johno111 Member Posts: 114
Yes 61 was the last Desoto, from what I can find on the internet Desoto was merged in with Plymouth. Dodge didn't have a big ride so what was suppose to be the 62 Desoto became the 62 Dodge 880. That the best I can figure out from skimming over some of what I found. :D
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,465
The Packard is a 49 or 50....I can't remember the difference. The Continental is more upright than the real classic ones, maybe a 66 or so. Still kinda classy, but fussier than the 61-63.

I still see those Corsicas around a bit...always looking pretty ratty, and the 6cyls sure sound coarse

The last Desoto was a '61. Chysler kept saying they were not going to cancel the Desoto, and kept saying the next generation model was under developement. It never arrived, instead Dodge recieved the "Custom" series slotted where Desoto had previously been (62-64).
  • ubbermotorubbermotor Member Posts: 307
The Packard is a twenty-third series eight. Packard never adopted the model year*, but the 23rd series was offered in late '49 and 50.

*Actually, after 26 consecutive series, they jumped to the 54, 55, 56, 57 and 58 series, which just happened to coinside with the years they were made.

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Right on all counts Jack. It is a '54 Century which was the first year for Buick V8s (and wrap arounds). The Kelsey-Hayes wires were optional.

  • johno111johno111 Member Posts: 114
Looks French with those chevrons on the wheels and nose. Citroen maybe ??, got a little of that Audi look to it, definately European. I'll go with Citroen.
  • gsemikegsemike Member Posts: 2,417
I can read Citroen on the license plate and my eyes aren't even that good.
  • johno111johno111 Member Posts: 114
Good eye, I missed that... Looked it up on the Citroen website. It's a c5. Like we'll ever see a Citroen here in North America....
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Congratulations Juice, you've come the closest, the 2007 Citroen C-Triomphe is essentially a C4 with a trunk and was designed that way specifically for the Chinese market which, like the USA, prefers three box sedans to hatchbacks.

It's the first generation Passat (mid-70s), as evidenced by the euro headlights. It's was the much-maligned Dasher in the USA.

Looks to have British plates, N suffix makes it around 1975. Can't recall the last time I saw one on the road, been 10 years at least.

OK, I'm nit-picking, and it is an older used car, but could that headlight be any more crooked?

I had an 80s Mustang, the chassis flexed so much that when I jacked one wheel up off the ground, it would never get another wheel off the ground, no matter how high I went.

Since then I've owned all unibodies, and I can get both sides of the car off the ground easily.

I owned an '86 GT Convertible and I thought it was reasonably solid for a ragtop of the era. If you wanna talk about chassis flex try an old Triumph sports car. :surprise:

My freind had an IROC convertible of the same era. That thing would creak just pulling in to a driveway.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,035
back in the 80's for body integrity was the K-car. With the exception of the first year, which was 1982 I believe, the convertibles were built on the Chrysler assembly line to be convertibles, as opposed to a closed coupe that was then farmed out and chopped up, as with the Mustang and Camaro.

Now the Eldorado/Toronado/Riviera convertibles in the early 80's might have been fairly solid, as they were body-on-frame. The Camaro and Mustang, and K-cars were unitized. Years ago I found a 1982 or so Dodge Mirada that had been turned into a convertible. It was horrible with the top up, as there were no quarter windows in back, just a very big blind spot. But it was a looker with the top down, especially in its midnight blue with midnight blue leather interior. It was a real shaker, though!
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
I imagine that Mirada was a looker, but it probably twisted like a pipe cleaner. I recall a fad where they made convertible pickups out of Toyota and Nissan trucks in the late 1980s.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Andre, I am going to have to take you out to the woodshed and have you punished severely if you persist in comparing Mustangs and Camaros to the likes of K-Cars and Miradas. :lemon:
