On the nose Hudson. Of course the '64 Plymouth wasn't nearly as long and low as that art suggests. ;)

What car was as long and low and good looking as the art suggested?

That's right, the car hasn't been restored yet.

2009 Honda European Accord (Acura TSX) Estate Wagon -- the car I'd love to buy but cannot since Honda won't bring it to the US.

That looks awfully tall for a TSX wagon.. :confuse:

I think it's one of the myriad of other-market tall wagons made by Honda as well as other Asian brands.

No hideous shield grille or dumb ad campaign...any car looks better without those.

You're a little bit off, it isn't an Accord, JDM Odyssey or a TSX.

Ya know, I just realized something. Because Edmunds doesn't allow uploading of pics, if someone links to a pic on another site, you just need to right-click the pic and view the properties.

I didn't figure out the Stream that way, but I was looking to post a new pic and it occurred to me. So, sure enough, I right-clicked andys pic and it says Honda Stream right in the address. Could have saved me some investigating if I just did that. :(

    not quite.

hmmmm... but the judges may feel close enough.
Or I may be wrong. Never heard "alfetta" attached to a 1985 GTV6.

Ah... Wiki confirms. Alfetta name was dropped by '81. :P

In any case ... that was solved quickly. Guess I gotta try harder.

In the '70s, the vent was body colored, not a black insert.

What car was as long and low and good looking as the art suggested?

Y'know, that might be one reason a lot of people think those old cars were so big...because they look at that old brochure art, which makes the cars look a lot bigger and longer than they really are. I'm not sure how long a '64 Belvedere is overall. It was on a 116" wheelbase. I think the sedans and hardtops were about 202" long, wagons might have been a bit longer. 202" isn't much, though. I think my Intrepid is 204"!

Even when they started using real pictures in their advertising, they'd still use little tricks like stretching out the car, or using small actors standing around. Like when VW used to put Dustin Hoffman in their ads to make their cars look big!

maybe too small ... or too easy ... or a little of both.

I remember seeing an ad for a 1956 Cadillac Sedan DeVille that made the car look as long as the width of the hotel it was parked in front of. Another trick was making the drivers look tiny in comparison to the car. I saw an ad for a 1952 Studebaker that made the woman driver look so small it looked as if it was being driven by a 6 year-old girl.

Not a '65 and not a Fleetwood. Hint: quite rare model.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,035
this one's a bit more trunkcated than your typical 60's domestic luxury car.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,602
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It's the short deck version, I think it's called the 'Park Avenue. I'll say '64. I know the '65s had stacked headlights, but I can't remember the '63 well enough to eliminate it.

Close. It's the 1963 Cadillac DeVille Park Avenue - a short-deck car marketed to urban drivers. It had a Series 62 companion the Town Sedan. It wasn't very popular. I guess Cadillac owners wanted their cars to be as long as possible whether or not they lived in the city.

I just don't think it looks right, with that stubby rear deck. I think part of what gave a Cadillac its presence back then WAS the long overall length, a major part of which was that sleek rear-end. I forget now how much shorter the Park Ave was from the regular Caddies. Maybe something like 8"? Probably around 216" versus 224"? When you're dealing with cars that big, I don't think 8" makes much difference in maneuverability. Especially since other things like wheelbase, width, etc are still the same.

Wasn't there also a short-deck version of the '61-62 Caddy?

Yes there was. Remember the stubby-looking '62 Cadillac Park Ave we saw at Macungie last week? It looked weird!

It appears to be a '58 Plymouth, BUT is sure looks like it says Dodge on the trunk. OK, what did they call Canadian Plymouths??? Mayfair?????
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
That's what it is - 1958 Dodge Mayfair - the top-of-the-line Canadian Dodge. These cars were often called "Plodges" because they were Plymouth bodies with Dodge front-end clips.
