I think you need bullet points for this one:

Ah-one - BONUS point if you identify the owner

And ah-two - EXTRA bonus points if you identify the engine option

    Enough of a klew?

Lawrence Welk and a 59 Dodge - quite an exaggerated vehicle that year. Not sure what size engine was in it though.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
IIRC Dodge was one of Welk's sponsors (showing my age).

One of his shows (before both our times) was The Plymouth Show, renamed The Dodge Dancing Party for Saturday airings. (per Wiki).

GOLD STAR for lostwrench! Yes, Welk ordered up the D500 engine option. I'm not sure, but that might have been made up special for him for that model...the Mopar luminaries would have to verify that.

He was a sponsor for Dodge.

This photo came up in a recent article which is speculating the demise of the Dodge nameplate in the near future (I have no idea if that will happen or not).

VW Type 3 Notchback. Must have been sold in the US for a very short time if at all, as they seem to be 100x less common than a squareback or fastback.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
According to Wikipedia the notchback version of the Type 3 was never officially exported to the US. Given what we now know about the supposed American preference for three-box notchbacks over fastbacks and wagons this may have been a mistake on VW's part.

They were known in most markets as the Volkswagen 1500/1600, Squareback/Fastback nomenclature was strictly a VOA concotion.

The Type 3 was the last hurrah for rear-engined designs at Volkswagen, there was even a Karmann-Ghia version (also not sent to the USA).

And wasn't it (squareback/fastback) the first car in the US with EFI?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Yes, according to Wikipedia the 1.6 liter (1965) version of the Type 3 motor was the first to introduce an EFI system on a production car (Bosch D-Jetronic). Mechanical systems go back to the 1950s.

I've got all through my life until today without hearing about Lawrence Whelk, I must confess....

If you're curious, I bet there's plenty of youtube videos on him...just make sure you spell it "Welk", not:

    G'day

Fairly popular in Australia where I think they were assembled for a time. Volkswagens did remarkably well in some endurance rallies in the 1950s and are surprisingly good off road. (A serious 4wd enthusiast claims that at the end of every off road route he has driven, there has been a Kombi camping!).

The type 3 was strange with a boot (trunk to you) over the engine at rear as well as at the front.

The efi system is one thing, but the fuel pump was something else. It was driven by a lever against a cam on the crankshaft. From experience with a friends sqareback we found that when this wears, fuel flow is restricted meaning a maximum speed of about fifty. We suspected his father 'fixed it' that way.

    Cheers

    Graham

Extra points if you know the make of the truck, or if you've ever paid those prices for gas. :P

60 Merc and similar vintage (maybe 61) Dodge in front of it. I think the truck is a Divco. I'm old enough to have paid less than that for a gallon of gas
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Me too - 29.9 is the cheapest I remember.
  • stevedebistevedebi Member Posts: 4,098
Can't help with the cars, but I've paid 25 cents for a gallon, back just before the Oil Crisis in the early 70's. (Or rather, my dad paid for the gas).

I think the Dodge is a '60. Beyond that is, I think from the trunk emblem, an early '50s Olds but I can't quite make it out. Beyond the Olds(?) is a '58 or '59 Rambler wagon.

On the left a 54 Ford.
Gulf had three grades of gasoline, No Nox, Good Gulf, and Gulftane. In high school I used to buy the cheap stuff, Gulftane, at 19 cents a gallon. I once drove into a Texaco station and the pump price for regular was 22 cents! I drove out. I wasn't going to pay that much.

I can remember my mother paying in the $0.20s, back in the '60s..

I started driving in 1974, and definitely paid below $0.40/gallon in my early driving days....

Driving trip to Daytona in 1977.... gas was about $0.57/gal at home... and, we were shocked to see $0.67/gal. on I-75 on the way down.... :surprise:

Looks like a '54 to me too, mainly because of the extra squarish chrome trim piece just in front of the rear wheel (of course i would prefer to see the front!). Behind the '60 Dodge is a '53 Buick.

And back in the mid 60s I worked at Reinauer's Phillips 66 Truckstop in Mahwah NJ regular gas was 27.9 - minus my .03/gal employee discount!!
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
The 53 and 54 Mainlines are similar but because of the lack of brightwork on the speedometer I'll stick with its being a 54.

It has kind of a Peugeot vibe, but it looks like there is a Union Jack in the grille area.

The hint is in the rear flank which echoes a Citroen ID/DS

A British designed and built Citroen Bijou built off 2CV chassis and mechanicals.

The designer was invoked with Lotus in some way

    Cheers

Early maybe 61 or 62 Buick Special Skylark convertible and 66 Ford Wagon.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
Yep, it's a 1962 Buick Skylark. The wagon's a little blurry on my monitor but it is likely a '66 Ford (or a '65?).

You can see the tail end of a black sports car on the left, I think it's a Jaguar XK-120 or XK-140.

Rather rare car, that one. A DS21 Henri Chapron Citroen.

I think the correct name is Le Caddy Décapotable, but I'm not sure.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
Being a coupe, I think it is a "Le Dandy".
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I didn't even notice it wasn't fabric! Looks a bit home-made. From what I've read, the build quality on these special coachbuilt Citroens wasn't very good.

They actually used the front doors from the sedans and lengthened them! :surprise:
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,507
The proportions are weird for the coupe or the cabrio with top up. Looks striking with top down, though. They seem to bring pretty good money too.
