    G'day

This has taken me some time to remember. Chrysler in Australia seemed to name each variation of their basic line with an entirely different name, including for auto or manual. This one is a Plymouth Belvedere Utility from about 1956. The sheetmetal is 1953/54 US Chrysler derived, but the engine was sourced from Canada and the whole assembled at Chrysler's factory in Keswick, suburban Adelaide.

There is an excellent write up on Shannons of the model, with one being ausctioned here in Melbourne, last year.

    Cheers

    Graham

Hi Graham, haven't heard from you in a while. Yup, that is a 1956 Plymouth Belvedere utility. It's interesting that the styling comes from the previous gen of MoPars.

I'll take the 60 Ford Galaxy on the left. I think it was called a Starliner. Several bugs and a Vette on the right

Might be a first Gen Corvair, hard to say. The Corvette on the right looks like a late C1 (61/62). Just behind it is a Willys All-Steel wagon that's probably a decade older.

The Willys rival for oldest vehicle would be the GM (Chevy or GMC) pickup heading towards the camera in the right lane near the sign that says "Parts Co." (left side towards the top).

I'll pick off the Rambler wagon in front of the ducktail Corvette, and the Lark wagon parked at the corner upper center. I also see a 62 big Ford in front of that Corvair heading away from the camera.

Newest cars seem to be 62s, there's at least a couple of them. I like all of the wide whites in the pic.

I believe that's a 1960 Plymouth crossing the intersection, a '61 Impala behind it and a '61 Olds below them facing the camera. I don't see anything newer than '62.

The car in front of the '60 Ford appears to be a Circa 1955-6 Mercury. Cars really grew in the five years between '55 and 60.

Station wagon dad looks like Christopher from The Sopranos. And the Country Squire looks like MY '63 but with the family crowding the center of the grill, I could be wrong. Looks like a Thunderbird 390 emblem on the fender. Behind the family across the street looks like a '55 Pontiac coupe. Star Chief?

I used the URL to get the pic. My dad's wagon was also red, but a 60, and he had it in the 90s. I was a teenager :)

That red 63 Squire looks pretty cool, must be highly optioned, even has skirts. I wonder what the engine badge denotes, I bet at least a 390.

A 60 Ford not rusted by the 90's - amazing. Most were long gone much earlier after tin worm infections. Ford wagons were very popular decades back. Never saw any red ones as I recall, other than a 59 and a 63 - and they both were Country Squire's which seemed even more odd.

This is the west coast, rust is slow here. The 60 had just a little rust, I think it had drainage issues, and the passenger floor was pretty much gone. The car also needed a heater core, it leaking may have also helped the floor go on that side. The rest of it was solid. In ca, 1991, there were no repro floor pans or similar as far as I know, so my dad got a sheet of steel and made it himself. But instead of welding, he fiberglassed it in - maybe not the best way to fix it. But it never leaked or did anything weird in the time he had the car.

It was red and white on red and white, with a 352. It was actually pretty reliable after a tune up, new coil, and getting the old fuel out of the system. It had sat outside for some time, and it took a huge amount of (my) labor to rub and buff the red paint from being oxidized to shiny. Maybe the best $300 purchase my dad made.

I think the car nearest the fence but not obscured by it is a Hillman Super Minx. Great variety of design in that lineup, from the modern Hillman to the prewar style Ford at far right, I assume a Pop that was made into the late 50s. There appears to be an actual prewar car to the left of the Ford Thames van.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
Yes - the Ford Pop was made until 1959 and I just checked the registration on that one - 670VMU was registered in Middlesex in June to December 1959, so literally it was one of the last.
The Hillman Super Minx is the most modern design there I think.

And that is a Ford Thames van. I am not sure about the pre WW2 car beyond it - it could be almost anything - yet it is next to the roof of a Mini which was pretty much the most modern design around then.

Good luck with the others - particularly the odd car through the railings - that would have been common enough then but rare now...

There's a couple of Morris Minors, the wagon estate next to the Super Minx and a black split window next to the Popular. Just to the Minor's right is a Ford that I can't recall the name of

    '58 mercury commuter wagon.

BAT calls it a '58 but seller listed as '57 but description states '58. Oh, now I see the note under the listing. He confirms '58

    Mk IV Sprite?

it does say Sprite on the dash. I'm thinking the lack of curves along bottom of dash is specific to mkIV.

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Oh crap, I was hoping someone would say "Austin-Healey Sprite" but the 1971 version of the MK IV was sold as an Austin Sprite, dropping the Healey name so that British-Leyland could avoid having to pay royalties to Healey.

Kinda cheesy considering '71 was the last year for the Sprite.

The car in front of the Ford Pop is a Rover P4 of some variety. To the left of the Pop looks like a Morris Oxford, a Ford perhaps Anglia 100E or Prefect beside that, then maybe a Ford Consul, then the Morris Minor. I can't tell what's behind the fence.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,234
    edited May 2017
Yes the Morris is an MO Oxford - just like the Dinky one, and the Ford beyond it is a Prefect - the grille is distinctive (also it would be a four door (the Anglia /Popular 100E was a two door). And it is MK II Consul. Also the Rover P4 and the Minor Traveller.

Just leaves the odd car through the bars. It isn't something you would have had over there...
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
The car behind the barred fence looks like a Sports roadster of some kind with it's top up.

Possibly a Daimler Dart/SP250? First year of production 1959.
