I have a 2001 Dodge Neon

While taking my son to school the heater stopped working blowing only cold air. Got to work and then drove to get some lunch on the way back it started dinging and thermostat went to H. I got it home took a half day and taking it to a mechanic tomorrow. Any thoughts of what it could be?

If you lose all your coolant due to overheating or a leak, you won't get any heat out of the heater--since it requires hot coolant to be circulating throughout the system. So I would say you sprung a leak or maybe a head gasket, and once the coolant was drained, there was nothing to circulate but steam, which...doesn't very well. Also might have been a stuck thermostat--which will also cut off coolant circulation and cause an overheat as well.

Hopefully, no serious damage. Next time, when the gauge goes to Hot, shut the car off and call a tow truck.
