This seems like a rip off. Is it necessary to update the maps every year ?

Most people only update their maps, when they start noticing that they are out of date.

Tailgating on the subject... With all agreement to rip-off opinion, my Navi is of 2015 and I am weighting the options to upgrade or skip for one more year - have anyone already bought the 2018 maps upgrade, and could comment about difference, are there any other good/bad changes?

I have the 2017, and map updates are free from Garmin for 5 years - thanks Honda.
