Trailer weight is 2850 lbs plus two horses at ~1100 lbs apiece plus gear so we're talking max of 5500-5700 lbs. Fits within the 7000 max for the Tundra with the towing package doesn't it? I just wish the wheelbase was a bit longer and the width a bit more for stability. I live in relatively flat country so I'm not doing a lot of towing up and down mountains. I haul maybe 10-12 times a year to shows and whatnot so it's not a lot of stress on the transmission and mostly relatively short distances. Wonder if you can get heavy duty cooling system/alternater/etc like on the Ford? Would also like to have the limited slip option so I wouldn't have to go to 4WD. Who would one contact at Toyota to let them know these options would be nice? Thanks for your help.
as long as distances were fairly short, and no mountain or steep hills, the Tundra should be fine. Its smaller footprint definitely gives it a stability disadvantage over the Ford or other big 3, so consider that if you were ever to take a long trip.
If Toyota starts trying to increase on heavy duty options that are needed for real towing. The price tag is gonna go up to you might be pushing low to mid 30's.Sorry but I'd rather have a superduty or one of the new Chevy superduty's for less money.Hell you could probably get an F350 that will pull your house off its foundation for less.
You guys are high. Ford's SOHC v-6 is best V-6 out there bar none. virtually as powerful as the 5.0 v-8. as for realiability, I haven't heard one bad thing about them. only 1 word to describe its power: smoooooooooooooth!
From the description of your towing needs - I would say that a 1/2 ton pickup would be fine. Both Ford and Toyota make good 1/2 ton pickups.
As you may guess by my sign-on, I am biased towards Tundras. I drove both before buying my truck. They are both nice trucks, but I preferred the Tundra. You should drive both before making a decision.
There was an article in Trailer Life magazine a few months ago in which they used a Tundra to tow a 6000 pound trailer through the Sierra Nevadas. They were impressed with its towing ability. You should read the article.
Either the Ford or the Toyota 1/2 ton trucks work much better than the 3/4 tons when not towing. 3/4 tons have a harsher ride, and don't get as good gas mileage. Don't get more truck than you need.
If you decide you really need a 3/4 ton - by all means get the Ford. Toyota cannot compete with 3/4 ton pickups.
Thanks for all of your input. I really don't want to go to the 3/4 ton truck because this would be my primary vehicle. I also have to drive 35 miles each way to work and the poor mileage on a larger truck would kill me in gas costs. BUT, I also would never jeopardize the safety of my horses so if the Tundra could not do the job adequately, I would definitely get another Ford truck. (I have seen people towing horses with their Explorers and Grand Cherokees and it is SCARY!)
My 4Runner has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. Totally reliable, have only made maintenance repairs, and 195K miles and going strong. My husband also is concerned about the higher initial cost of the Toyota but my reasoning is if it'll last me as long as the 4Runner, then the cost evens out over the long run. How many vehicles today top 200K miles without major repairs? I am the kind that likes to keep a vehicle pretty much 'til it dies.
Interesting discussion. Thanks for all of your insights.
Actually, the Tundra will outhaul a Chevy 1/2 ton. It has more front seat leg room. It is much more capable off-road. To out-tow a Tundra with a Chevy, you would need to go with 4.1 gears - not something you would want to have on a daily driver. Chevy lies about their tow ratings. Also, there are big quality problems with the Chevy. There is really no comparison. The Chevy is also more expensive for a comparably equipped pickup. Oh yeah - we are supposed to be talking about Tundra vs F150.
The Tundra is right in there with other 1/2 ton pickups. If you want to go with a different 1/2 ton than the Toyota - the Ford is the best choice. That is what this topic is about. Sorry to digress, but I felt that the bash about Tundra not competing needed to be addressed.
Man you are a Chevy hater! How can they lie about their towing capabilities? Dont you think they'd be sued if they did?
You also say "The Chevy is also more expensive for a comparably equipped pickup."
Compared to the toyota? no way. What about gas mileage for the bigger Chevy? Its much better than the smaller toyota even though the toyota is equipped with a smaller engine. That toyota is smaller and uses more fuel, way to go.
If youre happy with your tundra, fine but dont lie about its capabilities.
The EPA rates new vehicles for gas mileage and the tundra is a gas hog. And I can guarantee you there are other government agencies that test trucks to see if they can carry what they claim they can and tow what they claim they can.
Sure a V8 tundra will outhaul a V6 Silverado, but is that really a fair comparison?
Want to put the toyota V6 against the 5.3? Or 6.0?
Bama aint got the knowin on a truck, ceptin which one got more "shine" too it. He is just a yuppie, runnin off on things he got no knowin on. Funny how them yuppies be buyin them little trucks and now be thinkin they "workin" em and such. Them pee-wee trucks aint got no haul in em, and bama be knowin the truth on it. Good luck on this one now!
Yeah I know, I think he's a kid who cant even drive yet.....I've run across him before.
He makes up stuff all the time. Even when presented with facts he moves on and tells everyone how wonderful his truck is. His gas guzzling not up to par V8 toyota.
I mean comparing the Chevy to hyundai or saying that Chevy is somehow involved with hyundai?
Sounds like what you say when you have nothing else to say. Start telling lies just like the dealer that sold you the new and improved t100======tundra.
a Toyota salesman losing the deal and trying to bad mouth the competition. dressagerider already stated that she would go with the Ford and yet he comes back to bash Chevy...don't understand that one.
I guess that you didn't look at post #387. A chevy owner with a raging case of Tundra envy posts "The Tundra can't compete with 1/2 ton pickups." This bash was totally unprovoked. I responded to this post with some facts. I'm sorry that you Silverado owners got your feelings hurt. I'm tired of all your whining and crying - you have to face facts.
1. The Tundra WILL outhaul the Silverado. The Tundra Access Cab V8 will haul 1530 pounds, the Silverado LS extended cab V8 will haul 1480 pounds.
2. The Tundra DOES have more front seat legroom.
3. The Tundra IS more capable off-road.
4. Chevy DOES lie about their tow ratings. Go to their website. In the 2000 brochure they rate the max tow rating of the extended cab 4X4 as 9400 lbs. In the fine print of the same table at the bottom they state that the tow rating of the extended cab will be reduced by the additional weight of the extended cab. This to me is lying. YMMV.
The Silverado Extended cab V8 owners manual states the max trailer weight of the truck with 3.7 gears as 7500. The brochure states 8500. Which do you believe?
5. There are very large quality problems with Chevy. Consumer reports rates them -90% in predicted reliability. That is off their charts. They predicted 4X4 reliability as being worse. These ratings are based on surveys filled out by the owners of Silverados. I personally lend a lot of credence to their ratings.
J.D Powers ranks Chevy at #26 amongst manufacturers in initial quality. Toyota ranked a tie for 4th with BMW.
You guys need get your heads out of the sand and face facts.
Some other differences between the Ford and the Tundra really show up when comparing two wheel drives. I have a '00 F150 XLT SC w/the 4.6L engine, 3.55 limited slip rear end (limited slips are not available on the Tundra), tow package which includes a class III hitch, wiring, trans. cooler, oil cooler, and 72 amp. battery. The truck also came with some cosmetic goodies (larger tires, two tone paint, appearance pkg., etc.). The truck will be able to pull the load you've described above without any trouble. All of the above mentioned are nearly impossible to come by on a 2wd Tundra. The price was right at about $22,200. Maybe not the best price but you won't get a comparably equipped Tundra for that price. I've been getting 16 mpg around town and about 19.5 on the highway. The Tundra is not getting that kind of mileage consistently. I pull my boat and other boats for friends. The limited slip is great for the traction on boat ramps and slick roads. I have not had any problems at all but the truck only had 4k miles so reliability can not be judged. My '87 F150 had 150,000 miles when I sold it and only minor repairs were necessary mainly because of age.
I don't think you can go wrong with the Ford. It is still the best selling vehicle and most people are happy with them. Oh yeah, one more point about the Tundra. I'm 6'4", 200 lbs. The Tundra was way to small for my liking. If someone you know will be driving/riding in the truck and they have some size to them, they may not be happy with the smaller Tundra.
It sounds like you are happy with your new truck. I agree that there are some circumstances when limited slip is a nice feature to have on a 2WD truck.
I am puzzled by your statement that the Tundra was "way too small". I rode in both and did not find any significant difference in the front seat and the rear seat was only marginally bigger in the Ford. The dimensions for the front headroom in the Tundra is 0.5" less, but the front legroom is 0.6" more.
The Tundra is not for everyone. You drove one and preferred the Ford. Enjoy your new truck.
re: post 387 there is a difference between a bash and the truth...If I had to choose, I'd take the Tacoma for $6K less knowing that the rearend was designed for it...
That factory be blowin that smoke now, and it be in ya eyes for sure. The fact is the fact, and ya be knowin that truth on it for sure. Twistin and pullin that truth is what ya do now, and folks be on too it for sure. Good luck on this one now!
I know where trucksrme is getting his numbers on cab volume - Motor trend May 2000 issue - the 4x4 pickup shootout. But anyone who is not blind can see how much larger the Big 3 trucks are. Just sit in them all and it will be obvious. You may not need the extra room and that is fine but facts are facts. The one thing I really noticed in cab size (besides the worthless Tundra back seat) is how much wider the Silverado is than the Tundra. I can reach over from the drivers side and adjust the A/C vent on the Tundra just like I could on my Nissan PU. I can't do this on the Silverado. I am not saying this makes the Tundra a bad midsized truck - It just has a cramped cab.
Bamma - Do you consider the T-100 to be a full size truck? How much larger is the Tundra than the T-100?
Thanks for the source of the cab volumes. I asked hicksrme but he can't seem to give a straight answer to any question - just blows more smoke. Do you think he really is a yuppie?
You said the source was Motortrend. I guess this is the same motortrend that awarded the Tundra truck of the year for 2000. They seemed to think that it was a full size pickup. I guess that they are just more yuppies. They are showing up everywhere.
Twist that truth anyway ya want too now. But the fact is the fact. Them big3 ones be from 1/4 too 1/3 bigger than them litter sized tundras now. They call this size the "full size". Just cuz that factory cant build one that be "full size" aint no fault of mine now. Facts is facts, twist all ya want, but the fact is that tundra aint no "full size" one. Use your eyes on this one now. Good luck on this one now!
I JUST BOUGHT A TUNDRA TRD. I WAS A F150 OWNER. WOULD NEVER BUY A GM. IF YOUR ARE LOOKING AT THE TUNDRA DO NOT BE FOOLED BY ALL THIS HIPE. ALL THESE TRUCKS ARE GOOD STUFF JUST A MATTER OF WHAT YOUR GOING TO DO. WHEN IT COMES TO OFFROAD THE HEAVY, LARGER CABS DONT CUT IT. THE MINI TRUCKS ARE JUST TO SMALL. AS FAR AS POWER ONCE AGAIN ALL BEING EQUAL IN OPTIONS THE TUNDRA WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN. OUT HERE IN THE WEST THERE ARE TURBO OPTIONS AVAILABLE AND YOU WILL FIND JUST BEFORE LIGHTNING STRIKES - YOU WILL SEE TUNDRA. WHILE YOUR UP ON THE MOUNTAIN YOU WILL LOOK DOWN AND SEE ALL THE COWBOYS AT WORK HERDING COWS WITH GM'S AND 150'S.
You are correct about Tundra being Motor Trends Truck of the year - But we all know that Motor Trend only considers trucks that are new or complete redesigns in the contest. My guess is next year it will be the Ford supercrew that will win. It is the first full size with 4 real doors and is getting a lot of attention. Last year Silverado won truck of the year honors and I think even Doge won one year (94?) when they came out with the new Ram body style. So as far as Truck of the year goes it really means little.
It may interest you that Motor Trend (and the EPA) do not consider the Tundra to be a full size truck. It is listed as EPA SIZE CLASS - STANDARD PICKUP. This is the same as Dodge and Ford. GM is the only truck listed as EPA SIZE CLASS - FULL SIZE. I know this is not that big of a deal to most people (myself included) but all the bickering about is it full size or not and who decides what is full size can finally come to an end - Silverado (Sierra) are the only 1/2 ton trucks listed as full size.
For all you potential F150 buyers,I read at the blue oval site that the 2001 4.6 will be bumped up 20 HP to 240 HP,Probably because the 2003 5.4 will become a 3 valve 310 HP engine.
This quote is directly from the Motor Trend 2000 Truck of the Year article.
"The notion that only the domestic "Big Three" can build a proper full-size pickup has finally been eclipsed. In making good in on its longstanding promise to directly challenge U.S. producers of full-size V-8 pickups, Toyota has delivered an exceptional new offering: the 2000 Tundra."
That quote carefully states that they "directly challenge" the big three. It says that is ans "exceptional new offering", but it never says that it is full size. They would have a tough time saying it was full sized if they tried getting into and out of the back seat. Quite frankly, I think that they would have been better off not offering that joke of a back seat.
Bama just likes too strech that truth a litte. Kinda like that factory strechin that truth when they call that tundra "full size". Them yuppies see no trouble in truth strechin when tryin too make them useless points. They just aint gettin that fact that the workin man needs em a "full size" rig, not some little pee-wee tundra sized yuppie truck now. Good luck on this one now!
What part of the word "eclipsed" don't you understand? Oh yeah - I'm talking to a hick.
You only used the word "yuppie" twice this time.
Those yuppies are EVIL. You have to keep an eye on them. They are always spreading rumors, blowing smoke, they don't know any facts, they always are chasing the latest fad. I'll bet a yuppie might be dating your sister (or your mother).
Its a good thing that neither of us know any yuppies. They are EVIL. Everyone knows that yuppies don't buy Chevies. Only hicks like you buy chevies. I hear that Chevy dealers make Chevy buyers take a test, and if they have better than a second grade education - they refuse to sell them the truck!
I think that all yuppies should be rounded up and put into concentration camps. Thats where those no-goods belong. Or maybe they should be sold into slavery. It would serve them right. Those yuppies are EVIL.
Its a shame that yuppies designed the Chevy. They should fire them all and let hicks design them. It would be a much better truck.
Wait a minute! You blow smoke all the time! You twist the facts! You don't know the facts! You chase the latest fad! Hicksrme, you are a yuppie! (A yuppie with low self-esteem). Better stop smoking that bottom leaf - its bad for you.
EPA classifies the Tundra as a "standard truck", (the 1/2 ton Ram and F-150 too). EPA classifies the Silverado and Sierra as "Full size trucks". This is per Motor Trend article (May 2000 issue) pages 59,61,63 &66. If you don't believe me I could care less, look it up for yourself. But I know how much trouble you have with numbers (especially division LOL) so just look for the pictures of each truck and read the part that says EPA SIZE CLASS. I honestly don't know how EPA determines the difference between "standard" and "full" size but I would guess is the same as sub-compact and compact classification in cars. Most likely wheel base and interior room. Many have ask who sets the standard for what a full size is and the answer is - the EPA- Now won't we all sleep better tonight knowing our tax $$ are at work keeping the world safe from misclassified trucks.
Hey- I dont understand why so many stupid people buy that domestic crap over and over again. With the Fords and the Chevys and the Dodges. When will you people except the concept that domestic doesnt cut it these days? They are always in the shops, always at the gas station and are the worst depreciating vehicles on the road. Not to mention the ride quality is horrible and they lack refinement and raw excitement. Imported brands(especially Toyota and Lexus) offer the highest level of quality, ride beautifully, never are in the shops and most importantly; hold their value. My family was once "domestic". We had all the junk, the F-150, the Ranger, Winstar, Aerostar. You name it, we had it. But after the minivan lost half its value in 1 and a half years and returned 14 miles per gallon, and when the Rangers transmission went after 50k miles and the frame was rusted and falling apart, we had about enough. My dad then bought a Toyota T-100 Xtracab V6 4WD 5-speed. Never a squeek, rattle, or problem what so ever. Got 22 mpg, towed a boat 1500lbs over its limit and always did more than what it was asked of. When we purchased it new it was $23,005. When we went to buy the Tundra(The Truck of The Year) we still got $16,000 five years later. Now we own a Camry, gets 28 mpg, hits 60 in about 9.5 secs and rides better than any car on the market. A comapable 4-cyl. mid-sized domestic wold get 22 mpg, get 60 in 14 sec and ride like it was on its rims. Not to mention we got the car for under $20K, which was invoice. No way you can get a domestic clunker for that and the quality, refinement and dependability that goes with it. The Tundra on the other hand rides like a car, has the power of a sports sedan, is basically flawless and doesnt get 13 mpg that every other truck gets. And why are you in here bragging about the Chevy when this is a Tundra vs. F-150 debate? Go tell all the hicks in the other rooms about how much your Chevy cost and how many times its been in the shop. What do all dentist, doctors and lawyers drive? Not a Silverado or a Ford Taurus. They drive a Lexus or a Toyota or a Infinity. Why you ask? Cause they have half a brain. Common sense tells them "why should I buy a domestic and be in the shop every other day or at the gas station when I can have the most pleasant riding, smooth, comfortable, powerful and flawless vehicle in the world?" I think they can make better decisions on an automobile brand than someone that is a farmer and drives a Ram and make $10K a year and is missing half his teeth compared to a highly respestable, well educated lawyer than makes in upwards of 100,000 a year. Like they always say, "drive one and you'll understand".
Your post says- "What do all dentist, doctors and lawyers drive? Not a Silverado or a Ford Taurus. They drive a Lexus or a Toyota or a Infinity. Why you ask? Cause they have half a brain."
So what you are saying is anyone with half a brain drives a Toyota? You should work in marketing for Toyota - target market people with incomes of $100,000 so they can afford our high prices and only half a brain so we can get them to buy our cars and trucks. Maybe that would explain why Toyota will only sell 100,000 Tundras per year. Not that many people with incomes of $100K have half a brain. My truck (Silverado)is in the shop right now - because a rock hit my windshield. I guess if I had a Tundra the rocks would just bounce off -
I admit you all have superior judgement and have purchased a far superior vehicle. Your respective trucks; have more haul, are larger, have better engines and transmissions, get better mileage, look better, are far more reliable, and are union built(employing more true Americans).
So how about humoring a simple minded Tundra owner and just leave us Tubndra owners alone to wallow in our mistake!!
Ya said: ... than someone that is a farmer and drives a Ram and make $10K ... compared to a highly respestable, well educated lawyer than makes in upwards of 100,000 a year.
Ya best do that research on what them farmers be makin, give ya that hint, it be lots more than most of them lawyers for sure. As for them lawyers bein "respectable", ya livin under a rock now? Yuppies kids, they sure aint gettin it now. Good luck on this one now!
We are doing you a favor by posting on these sites. If all posts were from Tundra owners it would read something like - Love my truck its great no problems; love my Tundra,Engine is sweet no problems; My Tundra looks great, no problems; After about 50 of these posts you would get sick and stop coming here.
Differences of opinion are normal - taking a little jab at the other guys truck in fun -well that is normal too. If someones posts bug you just skip them. Its not like someone is saying your wife is fat and ugly, or your kids are stupid and worthless. Life is to short to let some jerk get under your skin. Or do what I do post back at them and have some fun - after all that is 1/2 the reason most are here (other reason is to learn about trucks).
I agree - if the title is Tundra vs. (anything else) this is an invitation to a flame war and bashing of all vehicles involved is to be expected.
IMHO all Chevy owners that go into Tundra only sites to bash Tundras have Tundra envy big time. I don't see Tundra owners posting in Silverado sites telling their owners what a POS they are. To me it is common courtesy.

The doctors with both lobes intact drive Mercedes or BMWs.
And without the sugar beet, the dentist doesn't have a job!

Ya best do that research on what them farmers be makin, give ya that hint, it be lots more than most of them lawyers for sure. As for them lawyers bein "respectable", ya livin under a rock now? Yuppies kids, they sure aint gettin it now. Good luck on this one now!
IMHO all Chevy owners that go into Tundra only sites to bash Tundras have Tundra envy big time. I don't see Tundra owners posting in Silverado sites telling their owners what a POS they are. To me it is common courtesy.
