Dealer willing to renegotiate lease -- help my father get a better deal

Hi there,

Here's what's happening. The dealer sold my father a car and said they couldn't find the original sticker. The dealer presented what they claimed was a copy of the original sticker, and made representations about the quality of the car. My father leased the car.

At home my father found the original sticker hidden in the car. It showed the the sticker he received had been changed to remove MOBILITY VEHICLE - NOT FOR RETAIL SALE.

This was a little concerning, to say the least.

The bottom line is that I think the dealer will renegotiate a bit to make this problem go away. I am attaching the lease deal he got.

If someone can tell me what the best deal he could get was -- with the dealer making $0 -- that would be helpful. (I'm not saying a dealer should make $0, I'm just saying it would be good to know what he's starting with).

Here are the pictures

Thank you in advance. I'd be happy to compensate you for your time -- directly or a donation to your favorite charity. I don't like feeling like as my parents age they may get taken advantage of, and I worry that's what has happened here.

Hi @asdf21343sas, I'm not a legal expert or a lawyer but from what you have shown me this could be a legal issue. You might want to contact your Department of Motor Vehicles or the State's Attorney General.

For the discount on the car, it's hard to estimate how much a dealer's bottom line is because every dealership is different. The main thing about leasing is to treat the negotiations like you are purchasing the car. The major factor in decreasing the payment is the Sales Price (Cap Cost). Focus on the "Agreed Upon Value" and that will take care of most of the negotiations.

We would recommend looking up the True Market Value (TMV) on our site. The TMV is the estimated average price a car is being sold for (not including tax, title, license, fees, etc.). You can use this to help negotiate on the sales price and make sure you are getting a fair deal. Take about 2-3% off the TMV and that's what you should aim for.

Below is the TMV for the car on the window sticker with that exact packaging in Los Angeles.

I think this was originally designated to the dealer as a loaner car but he then decided to sell it.

A mobility vehicle is usually for a disabled person. Car manufacturers often subsidize a large portion of the modification costs. It's done on a case-by-case basis, which is why those vehicles aren't eligible for general sale.

I'd worry about all sorts of issues, down the road, and I'd want to know what sorts of modifications were made.
