Yes, the A/C is on when FULL AUTO is displayed in Honda auto climate controls. It is better for the system to be running than not (keeps coolant circulating, supposedly better than stagnating). It does burn more gas, though, which is why in the winter months, we had "A/C OFF" displayed most of the time in our data window of the ACC.
It varies from car to car--that is, in which position AC will recycle. The light has nothing to do with it---cars today are designed to de-humidify the air through the AC system even on the heat cycle.
Best way to test would be to look at your tachometer...flip the heat controls around until the tachometer either falls (AC on) or rises (AC off) and this will tell you at which heat position the AC is working.
As confirmed above, A/C will cycle when using auto mode regardless of temp/blower setting. The only way around it is to hold the A/C button until "A/C Off" is displyed. That is the only mode where A/C will not cycle. But it resets anytime you restart or change from auto/manual.
I bought 06 Odyssey LX 2 months ago and getting same noise from the beginning. I can't remember the exact level of shift but around 10 seconds after start up.
I had 00 Pontiac Montana but their ABS didn't have this noise at all.
I didn't go to dealer yet but it looked the problem is genetic...
Recently I have crinkling noise from the driver's side window. If anyone had same problem and got fixed, please let me know..
I have a deposit on a 06 Touring model..I'm now on the fence with the purchase. I honestly dont know what to do when I hear such problems with ABS Noise, vibrations, AC issues.. I am trading in my 2003 Chrylser Town & Country Limited for the Odyssey for the long-term reliability and the Honda reputation. My Chrysler is soon to be out of warranty and in the past it seems that everything breaks the day after the warranty has expired. Any recommendations as far as purchasing extended warranty? Is it worth the trade - going from the Chrylser that I have 2 years left to pay off to the 06 Odyssey? :confuse: Heeeeeeeeeelllllllppppppppppp!
I just bought a new 06 Odyssey EX-L. every time when I drive over coarse or bumpy surface I can hear this click click click sound from the front wheels. It sounds like metal to metal. I will take it to the dealer soon. Does anyone has this problem? I am so surprised and upset a brand new van has a problem. Please listen carefuly when you drive slow over coarse road.
I've now got 5,500 miles on my new Odyssey. Noticed a bunch of gas milage posts, I get 20mpg in overall driving which is a 70/30 highway and city mix (disappointing so far). On a trip to St. Louis, I averaged 24 in all highway driving at >65mph. My dad has an '04 Sienna that averages 25mpg in mixed driving.

Now to the main point of my post: Has anyone experienced any power steering noise? I am just now experiencing a fairly loud whining when the engine is hot and it is much more noticable when turning. I'm pretty sure it's the power steering as it even is noisy when sitting still and gets louder when turning. I've read on one other forum that one guy had his power steering in his '05 replaced 3 times. I'm taking it in tomorrow to get it looked at. Anyone with similar problems?
we have an 05 EX with DVD and 21000 miles. We drive from massachsuetts to NJ about once a month. BEST MPG around 27 with AC off, windows closed, and cruise control on at 68MPH. With AC on and keeping up with traffic, MPG drops to 25. In response to other posts, we have only had issue with grinding noise with front brake pads when they heat-up. But we have also noticed that after dealer service, they have often made software updates and other adjustments that do not get detailed. This includes putting some channel tabs on the front wiper blade arms to deal with noise and improve performance. But we have an excellent dealer in Hyannis Mass, which may be why we have not had addl problems. Paul Danesi
don't know if the same but, once upon a time there was a TSB for the Pilot I think re: strut tower welds. i had the problem with my '03 odyssey, going over small road imperfections i heard a ticking sound. dealer quickly diagnosed as a common issue with strut tower assembly and weld work. they disassembled the strut, ground down some welds, applied some grease, reassembled, and it's been problem free for 35K thus far.
Nothing wrong with your vehicle. This is a relatively heavy vehicle (4300 #), so you are lucky to get more than 22MPG in the winter with full load. But the city mileage is a bigger disapointment since 90% of us could not duplicate the EPA number. Check your tire pressure regularly. I have seen tire pressure drop 5 PSI within a month due to cold air. Also do not accelerate too fast from 0-60 since that is bad for Gas mileage also.
We have our 05 more than a year now. Our numbers are just like yours. In addition, my old GM minivan with less HP and less weight returns the similar numbers.
Our 2005 Ody has about 22,000 miles on it. I have nick named this minivan 'the volkswagen' much to my wife's dismay. Since we've had it, there have been dozens of bugs that I never would have associated with the Honda nameplate. The latest insult is a continual problem with the power sliding doors. It seems that when it gets below freezing (we live in NY) that the passenger slider decides not to work any more. We throw the switch on the dash to off and open and close it until it warms up again. That was something we coped with until this week when the power door no longer responded to any commands, no longer beeped, and now lights up the 'slide door' light on the dash. Back to the dealer again.
We also have brake grind on the car.. the dealer replaced her brakes and rotors @ about 15k miles yet it grinds today like it needs rotors again.
Another weird quirk are the mouldings around the power doors.. on the bottom specifically.. they have been glued on 2 times already by the dealer and yet they keep falling off. A poor design or bad glue? You decide.
And to comment on the gas mileage.. I agree with the other 90% of you that my Ody does not approach the EPA estimates in the real world. It gets about the same mileage as my old 97 2dr explorer. It's a joke.
I don't know if anyone has the same problem as I am. I bought EXL RES/NAV about two month ago and now ~3k miles on it. I do have the usual complaints, humming sounds and ABS noise after starting. I guess that I have no other choice but bear with them for now. However, I have a real annoying problem. Whenever I started it in cold weather, CD-player keep stopping, that is, in every 10 to 20 sec, music is stopped and then re-started (sometimes not at all). It appears worse in colder weather. I live in Minnesota. In fact weather has been mild in this winter. I mean near 32F, which is unusual at this time of the year. I am going to go go dealer this week. Has antone have the same problem? Thanks!
bought 2006 ODY 15 days back. It drives great however this thread is growing and that scares me. I got panicked so started paying more attentation and found weired noise from the car ABS. Here's how you can reproduce this.
A) Start car Put car in drive and press gas padal. C) The noise will come when shift changes to 2nd and about 13-15 mph speed. You will hear click (like shooting spring) and hear similar voice after about 10 seconds
I have a 2006 Odyssey EX-L and guess that I have noticed the same noise. It is funny, because I have two Mopars (99 Intrepid, 05 Pacifica) with the auto locking doors which lock at about 10 mph. The sound the Odyssey makes is very similar to this and happens at about the same speed. I just figured it was some system check that the van does once it gets going and did not even give it a second thought.
I agree with fred222, this is ONLY a system check/activation. How can this be a bother? It takes a fraction of a second and only after starting the motor. Golly folks, please get a grip. If you get so upset by this what happens when something really abnormal takes place in your life? Every vehicle has a noise like this of some sort or another. Why come on here and make a federal case over this very minor issue?
I am not sure anyone here is trying to make federal case. It is genuine complaint and even Honda dealer accept it but said nothing is wrong with car. I do care about my money and want every penny worth of it. I paid bug bucks for quiet car and that's what I expect.
fred222- This noise is from ABS. I was able to confirm this with dealer and driving 2 same model van. Dealer said some car makes this and some not and no worries.
Thanks user777. I have been paying attention on the clicking noise whenever i drive over coarse road. I have a acura vigor has exact the same problem. i took it to the acura dealer and they replaced the strut but never resolve the problem.they just told me to wait till the problem get worse and go back to them. I never went back there because I dont think they knew what was wrong. Now I am afraid the honda dealer will tell me the same.
Well, it is amazing how most people never notice or pay attention to what someone else thinks is a "problem".
Then these people with their minor "clicking noise" at a certain speed while going over a speed bump will come here and talk about this.
Then everyone will be looking and listening to their own cars in fear they, too, have the same dreaded problem.
artgpo, your post is a good one. Every vehicle on the road has it's own paticular sounds and nuances.
Part of this is the salesperson's fault. I always try to remember to tell my customers about the ABS self-test. I also tell them not to expect EPA mileage figures. I tell them that if they install crossbars that they might get a bit of wind noise etc.
the issue at 75 sounds more like a tire balance porblem. Are you sure that the balance is perfect (maybe do a road force balance)?
Every auto tranny car I have ever driven has had some vibration at idle (one of the things I don't like about a slushbox), since there is some load on the engine when you leave it in drive. In essence, it is "lugging" very slightly.
If it really bothers you, slip it into neutral if you are sitting still?
turning on the lights or running an accessory (like the windows) makes it go away because the extra drain causes the engine revs to increase slightly.
One problem is cars are set to idle pretty low these days (probably for MPG or emissions), which adds to the sensation.
The issue with this droning/moaning sound at low RPM/steady speed seems to be very owner specific. That is, it seems much more noticable (or important) to some people than others.
I am assuming, of course, that we are discussing the normal operation. It would be different if in a speciifc case there was a bigger problem (like a defective motor mount).
Anyway, if I really pay attention and look for it, I can ID the sensation. But, it just seems normal to me, since cars are designed to get into high gear as soon as possible, so you get some sort of lugging.
Ever car also has some natural harmonic balance oints where you can get a noise like this, due to some combination of intake noise, vibrations, etc. That's why you don't feel it at higher or lower speeds.
I suppose you could drop down a gear to get the revs up if it really bothered you. Or turn the radio up?
Either my van is smoother than others or I am just not as sensative to the feeling (or I lump it into my general distaste for how auto trannys operate), but it just doesn't bother me.
Noises in a car often are noticed relative to what cars the customer has had before. I've ridden with people in other brands of cars than the one I have and wondered how they stand the road noise, or tire noise, or rattles, or other things, but they don't note them.
Some people here and in Pilot discussion talk about certain things that possibly shouldn't be there such as noises at certain highway speeds. But they never say "I test drove a vehicle under the same conditions and it didn't do it." They usually didn't get a thorough test drive. Probably the vehicle for test drives did the same thing.
Best method is to rent a car for a weekend short trip or thorough use over a couple of days, if possible to do.
OTOH many cars have flaws that shouldn't be there and the company should have designed them out. Maybe that's not possible to do. But you just decide the flaws are overwhelmed by the things you do like and enjoy in the vehicle.
no, it's engine vibration, i can feel it. Dealer actually did a tire balance but the engine vibration is still there. by the way, i found a TSB for Acura TL (i.e. honda) for fixing the engine humming/vibration problem (http://www.alldata.com/tsb/Acura/1116572400000_1126076400000_05-017/171.html) . how come honda can't fix similar problem in ody? is it because there are more ody customers and will cost honda a lot of money to have the problem fixed? that will be really bad!!
Will over filling the crankcase by 1/4 to 1/2 inch on the dipstick affect the gas mileage? When you overfill crankcase two bad things can happen. 1) If you overfill it enough the crank counter weights will hit the oil. Normally the oil level is just below the rotation of the crank. The crank hitting the oil will develop friction which will probably reduce your mileage. 2) Worse is that the crank hitting the oil will cause the oil to foam. Your engine is designed to handle oil as a liquid and not as a foam. I would check the oil immediately after driving and if you see any foam, replace it at the correct level.
I was just reading through some of the posts and just wanted to say that we have had our 2005 Touring for eight months and almost 10,000 miles and have had no problems whatsoever. We got this van when our 2004 Nissan Quest SE was totaled and we love the Honda, it's a great minivan.
I just wanted to post something positive in this forum...
Does anyone know if odyssey has a cabin air filter? I could not find out in the manual. My 2002 camry has one. It realy helps reducing dust inside the car.
Yes! I have my Odyssey for almost a year now and since August o5 it has been whining almost every day, when the motor has been running for a while and especially when turning. I can also hear it slightly whining when driving straight and faster, plus it makes a bit of a purr sound with it. When we opened the motor cap to listen where the noise came from, it appeared to be from the belt area. It drives me especially nuts because the guys in the garage want to hear the noise to be able to figure it out but whenever I drive over there, it doesn't whine. It whines 4 out of five days on my way to work and back of course, but not then. I had not thought of the power steering at all.We had them check out the belt , nothing found. Thanks for posting!
My two week old EX-L R&N has a very noticeable steering wheel vibration when VCM is active (ECO light on) and RPM is between 1500 and 1900 RPM. Smooth as silk 2000 RPM and higher. I set the vehicle on cruise. It is smooth when going up a hill and ECO light is off. I got the reply from the dealer yesterday after a test drive that this is "normal". I wish that I had caught this during the test drive prior to purchase. Poor gas mileage has me bummed as well.
Never took my almost 2 yr Ody back to dealer for anything. It runs flawlessly and I do my own PM - been doing so for the past 30+ yrs to all the vehicles in my home.
We just got a loaded Ridgeline RTL 4 months ago. It too runs flawless and is fun to drive like the Ody. I just did the first oil change last week. No need to use ramps - just crawl under it. A piece of cake!
My new 06 Ody has front brakes that like to grind. It doesn't happen every single time they are applied but it does seem to happen more so after they have been firmly applied. Honda Customer Service says that as of Jan 06' they were only aware of the problem happeining in the 05' Odysseys. They told me thanks for bring it to there attention and that now they are aware of the problem happening with the 06's as well. No fix available at the present time. They went as far as telling me, "It's more of a nuesence and not a safety issue, so check back with us and we will let you know if we have come up with a solution." Until then, I guess i will have to keep explaning to everyone that hears the noise that it's normal with this van and NO! my new van doesn't need a break job! This sucks and I'm not happy about it!
I have a 2006 Honda Odyssey EX-L with DVD. When playing the DVD in back the Wireless and CORDED Headsets will stop playing the audio for seconds or minutes at a time. Honda so far has replaced the DVD Player as well as the Radio/CD/DVD/XM MAIN console. After that it worked fine for a few weeks, but recently the problem has started again. Any suggestions before heading back to the dealer??
Only in the front. Anyone else having the same problem? Any input from anybody would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. P.S. I have the 06 Odyssey EX-L RES
I have a 2005 LX, I don't hear yet the humming noise, I have problems with the sliding doors (the don't lock properly, they rattles at any speed, previous odyssey's had the same problem, the doors open when driving causing accidents, they have recalls about the problem.) Honda said that they fixed but negative, as soon you drive the rattles is there, they just tied the bolts, they said that is not a safety issue, how a door that don't lock well is not a safety issue.
The strut problem that start 6 months ago, you heard when you drives that something is popping or touching the wheels at slow speed better, yesterday finally after so many times they said that is the strut and they request the parts to be replaced.
The sound in the handle they just lubricate the wires, already twice.
My problems started out with whistling sounds and jingling sounds coming from the dash. After several visits to the dealer they finally admitted they were seeing more of the same and removed my windshield and glued it back in. Thewhistling sounds was gone, but the jingling continues. Then, at about 11,000 miles my power steering pump started making whining noises and humming. I took it in and was told it was normal. I brought it back and they admitted they were seeing others with the same problem and they ordered a new power steering pump. They put it in a week later, by which time I also reported to them that what seemed to be my transmission was now making strange noises and shifting funny, as well as giving me a sort of vibration in the gas pedal while accellerating or driving at speeds of 30-40 mph. Also seemed to downshift from time to time at those speeds. They claimed to check it out when replacing the power steering pump and said they found nothing unusual. I am going back next week because it definitely there, no matter what they say. Also, my brakes are now making grinding sounds and seem to bottom out from time to time. It is hard to stop the car without putting my foot through the floorboard. Will have them check this while checking transmission. From reading other e-mails, it looks like lots of people are having the same problems with their turkeys. I previously had a 2001 Sonata from Hyundai and never had these sorts of problems. Comments welcome.

My Odyssey has a vibration just before shifting to 6 cylinders from 3 cylinders. After 4 trips to two different dealers the dealers tells me the vibration is inherent in the car. Anyone experiencing this problem?
How do you know that the vehicle is switching to 3 cylinder mode : ECO light?
Anyway, many of us complained about the humming/booming sound at 2200- 2400RPM or about 40 MPH around town or ~60 MPH on highway on slightly inclined roads.
If that is what you talking about, then join the club. Some vehicles have it and some don't. One person already figured it out: a loose mesh in the A pipe (exhaust pipe). And he got hid vehicle repaired by his Honda dealer.
Your problem could be a new one and truely VCM related if it does not fit the symptom above.
