Yup,the Wind in the Windstars are gone !!!
Yes, I am flying next week to NY to reserve an apt . And I will buy it in NY itself and then sell/donate the car off in NY itself. And I am waiting till May end when I shift to NY to purchase. And I decided on a compact/midsize sedan. No big SUV`s or m.vans there !! Just testing the waters the 4 days I am there next week. :shades:
Also , I often work late nights and so a car is almost essential. And I am looking for an apt in Queens that has parking so that it doesn`t cost me a fortune like in Manhattan-- parking rates were outrageous even considering night time parking !! :surprise:
And damn, I cant just rest and relax on the weekends. Lots of places to see in NY and Canada unlike west TX which is a desert and shuts down by 6.30pm. So no excuses can be offered to my wife..I am hoping the car breaks down after leaving NYC to Canada on the weekend and only on the weekends !!! LOL !!!
Also the car will have a TX registration as I am in NY only temporarily and it will have TX tags. A friend in TX can go to the DMV`s office to register it in TX. The car`s insurance will be added to my TX insurance policy on which I have a multicar discounted policy ..That`s what I am thinking .
And part of me --wants to really rip drive a car. I drive Toyo/Lexus and I am a very conservative driver. Never slam brakes, never floor the pedal,no rash lane changing and never rotate the steering wheel furiously and drive in an isolated, quiet cabin ! :shades:
So , I just want to slam the brakes, not worry about potholes, turn the wheel 360 from one end to the other.,not worry about any dents or dings and have a nice road noise feel with some rattles and squeaks !! Just a fun experience !! Just be a rough driver but always driving safely within speed limits !!
You can probably add it to your Texas policy but you have to state that it will be garaged in Queens, NY. Not to say that would be insurance fraud. Besides the fact that I'm sure as an upstanding citizen you would not want to do that - should anything happen to the car, while driving and/or garaged in NY, and the insurance company finds out that is where you were living, your claim could be denied and possibly they might even cancel the policy on your other cars back in Texas, if worse comes to worst.
So you might want to be very careful about all that. Just sayin'.

So what do you folks think??Can I suggest for the regular Toy/Hond/Ford/GM cars ?? Maybe Toy/Hon/Kia can use exotic Asian gals !! And all the tough Dodge Rams can have the caption-- Real trucks for real guys who like real gals !! Built Dodge real !! :P :shades:
You can bet that with these promotions--the affordable midsize "Family " sedan sales will shrink badly as there will be no female buyers !!
So I am not sure how it works then.I did not know that if it was garaged in another city--the claims will be denied. I have no problem in telling them that it will be garaged in Queens. So will it be added on to the existing policy with an exception for this car--being it will have NY requirements - or will I have to buy a totally new policy??
Thanks a lot for the info . I just did not know that the policy would differ for each state even though you have a permanent location with other cars and are staying temporarily in a different city with a single car ?? I would appreciate if you could provide me more info on this !!:confuse: :confuse:
I drive pretty carefully, even though I have a bimmer. But, I have a fantasy of buying a 10 year old beater and I wouldn't have to think about where I park in a lot.
Maybe a Crown Vic or Intrepid, an old Oldsmobile or Buick would work. Nice loose steering and bouncy shocks just for a change
I don't care if it gets washed, or if wheel discs are missing. Sounds like a lot of fun.

While you may be in NYC temporarily the State of New York might still require the car to be registered in New York. Since you will be buying it, driving it and disposing of it in New York they may want it registered there. Most states have laws requiring a vehicle to be registered in their state if it is "garaged" in that state for a specific period of time even if the owner/driver resides out of state (exceptions for the military do apply to these laws).

Here in Virginia, just outside D.C., we get lots of people transferring in for a few months to a few years and then moving on. Virginia law says if the car is in Virginia for more than 30 days, it has to be registered and insured here. New York law is probably something similar. (With, as snake said, exceptions for the military.)
Your insurance agent should know. You might want to give a call before you buy anything and get an estimate of how much it would cost.
I don’t like questions about my income at any time.
When I bought the Genny a year ago I was planning on writing a check and that would be the end of it. The salesman said “our finance guy would like to talk to you about financing and he can come over here if that’s alright with you”. I said, “why does he want to talk to me? I’m writing a check”. He’s says, “I’ll let him explain it to you”. The guy comes over and says, “if you finance a minimum of $10K with Hyundai you could get a $750 rebate if you qualify”. I’m thinking ‘now you’re talking’. He says, “let me get some info from you and I’ll check to see if you qualify”. You guessed it; the first question is, “about what is your monthly income”. I said I don’t want to give this type of information to anyone. He then says, “how can I help you if you can’t give me some information”? My response was, “I’ll give you our SS#’s and you can run a credit check with that but I’m not going to provide any income information”. He says reluctantly, “OK, I’ll try that but I’m not sure it will work”. He comes back about 10 minutes later, smiling and said, “you qualify alright but I never saw a husband and wife that had the same identical credit score (861)”. I said, “why is that so surprising? Both of our names are on all of our accounts and CC’s. We do everything together, even have kids”.
He goes on to say, “just finance it for 3 months then pay it off if you want to and you will save the full finance charge by doing that”. I knew that and I planned on doing that but it was nice of him to suggest it. I didn’t know at the time if he ran a credit check or not but I saved $750 (minus the 3 months finance charge) and that was the important part. The thing that has always puzzled me was that the score was 861 and not some increment of “5”. :confuse:
About 2 months ago I ran one of those free credit checks on myself and Mrs. j with the 3 credit bureaus. Sure enough, it showed that the dealer did run a credit check.
Getting a loan by providing only your SS# is all that is needed; at least it was for me.

The first rule of sales is finding what the customer wants and needs. Nothing can be sold if it does not fit that criteria. I never ask income until doing the credit application. At some point during the process (after finding out needs) I might ask what you do in the real world. That is more to establish common ground than anything else. Also may lead to more hidden desires. Also, "do you have a family" may help to establish needs. But without the right product, there is no deal.

Ha, that really bugs my wife. I'm retired but she's still in a high paying career. Our mortgage and credit cards are in joint names, as are our assets. Yet my credit score is about ten points higher than hers.
Makes no sense to me but I can live with it!

Thanks for your input. It appears that I dropped some unnecessary funds on the fuel service and tire balancing. We continue to live and learn. I won't make that mistake again. Explorer, if it makes my wife feel safer on her trip with her friends, then I don't feel too badly about doing it.
Jayrider, my full sized spare has never been used since I purchased the Explorer in 2003. Do I have reason for concern? Thanks.
Richard
I did put a claim in with the insurance. I sure hope they do something about things. They weren't optimistic and neither am I but they are sending out an appraiser. At this point totaling it would probably be the best possible outcome. Anyone need four nic new tires that fit a Celica?
Between the drowned Camry and the ripped up Celica roof, I'm a bit concerned that your insurance rates may creep up in the next renewal cycle.
richard - don't worry about the extra $$$'s you spent on the Explorer service. We've all done it at some point or another. I once took my (now departed) Saturn L300 to the dealer for service ... they told me I needed a new air filter, so I had them replace it.
Turns out it had just been replaced not 6 months earlier. My bad.
On a positive note, I got a couple of emails from my new "authorized Saturn service center" (local Chevy dealership) - they are offering a years' worth of oil changes, tire rotations and inspections for free, for both the ION and the VUE. Nice.
That said, I've passed on submitting a claim on the bumper on the Ody (high school parking lot with no one admitting to it) for exactly that reason.
Those loan abuses were much more prevelant on the home mortgage side. On the car side, the major banks doing indirect lendng (Chase, Wells Fargo, US Bank, etc.) were more conservative. Secondary finance, smaller banks, and some credit unions did have looser loan policies. But yes, loans have tightened up. The big difference now is A credit has gone from a 700 score to a 740 score. There was a period of time when there was no consistancy to loan calls - I had a 708 turned down. They had several rental properties and as a result, rather than looking at disposable income which was extremely comfortable, they looked at the debt to income ratio.
What, the bay just jumped in front of your daughter? I don't understand how that could be considered a "non-fault" event.
The roof on the Celica, I understand.
We did the same thing with the ION when someone backed into it while parked at a movie theater ... just easier to leave the gouge in the front bumper and not file a claim.
He negotiated the deal on the new truck for me and drove home the Explorer.
Unfortunately he died a couple of years later of cancer. His wife still drives the Explorer to this day and I really feel good that I overdid the maintenance on it. She knows that even without Jim, she can go years in that vehicle.

Next time, though you might want to ask BEFORE you spend the money.
Kinda like the people who go into the "Prices Paid" Forums AFTER thay have bought and they ask..."I paid XXX. Did I pay too much?"
Without fail, someone will always jump in and rain on their parade by telling them how much THEY paid for the same car.
Even if they don't tell the truth!.
I'm getting worried about Richard identifying with me. This may mean I should get another Sebring..... I will say the one I had didn't give me a lick of trouble.
More detailed answer:
While American driving conditions don't include the high-speed challenges of the German Autobahn, Chrysler and Ford Motor Company joined their European colleagues in 2005 by recommending that tires installed as Original Equipment be replaced after six years of service. (General Motors declined to offer a recommendation until a more scientific analysis of driving conditions and tire aging could be completed).
It is important to take into account Original Equipment tires are mounted on wheels and put into service right after being received by vehicle manufacturers, so their calendar age begins immediately. However the same cannot be said of tires properly stored in a tire manufacturers' warehouse or in Tire Rack distribution centers before they go into service. Properly stored tires that are protected from the elements and not mounted on a wheel age very slowly before they are mounted and put into service.
Our experience has been that when properly stored and cared for, most street tires have a useful life in service of between six to ten years. And while part of that time is spent as the tire travels from the manufacturing plant to the manufacturer's distribution center, to the retailer and to you, the remainder is the time it spends on your vehicle.

Jayrider, I think this idea is a good one. Also, there are companies that specialize in buying out leases or short term leases. Might get a better car and not have to worry about getting rid of it at the end.

Let me clarify something about this. I did tell him that I was officially retired but working as a consultant for the same company that I had retired from although I was employed by a consulting company and I gave him their name and told him how long I had been working with them. He said, “can you tell me if you make more than $50K a year”? I said, “yes and that’s all I’m going to say so don’t ask me anymore about my income”. I did not sign anything that showed my true income or what I had said. Maybe because the loan was for only $10K nobody got excited about it.
I also guess that since he said to wait 3 months before you pay it off that he got a flat fee that was not charge backed after 90 days.
To be fair about this loan thing I didn’t think it would be right to pay the loan off in full when the first bill was sent thereby denying the dealer some profit on the loan. After all, if he didn’t mention the rebate I wouldn’t have saved anything.
Also, it is quite unusual (do not know why) for even long time married couples to have the same score. It is usually very close, but not exact.
That’s the way it was when we refinanced our home a few years ago but this time he said it was exactly the same.
Captain Can you answer about the score being 861 vs. 860. I never knew they split hairs like that.

My wife worked with some Indian transplants for a while. Basically people sent over for ~1year + to "learn the business". Got appartments a few miles from the office.
But, no way to get around, other than long walks, and bumming rides.
So, the one guy did the same thing (investigated buying a car for a ST period, then selling it).
After looking at all the factors, it ended u pcheaper (and way easier) to get a long term rental (not sure from where). I don't know what the #s ended up being, but even at something like $600/mo, it was cheaper than buying with all the tax and fees, maintenance, repiars, and depreciation.
plus you get to drive a nicer car!

Congrats on your new ride. The car culture has always been of secondary interest to me compared to the cycling life, but the members and their stories on Edmunds forums are often entertaining. I've got 5 bicycles and ride them all (not a once), but the majority of my riding is confined to commuting until the summer when I start adding in a lot more road riding. I probably ride to work 70% of the time--even in the winter if it's not too icy or snowy. My wife isn't very impressed with my passion (read: addiction), but there are worse --and much more expensive--obsessions or at least that's my argument.
The wife has actually eased up on the bikes, but she always looks disdainfully at the four unicycles, especially the off-road and five-footer. Sheesh!
When I was in high school back in the 74 three of my schoolmates and took a three-week excursion and rode our bikes from Detroit to Portland, ME. We hauled all our gear: tents. sleeping bags, tools, clothes, etc, etc. Still can't believe that any of our folks let us do it. It was a lot of fun and not that painful until we got to upstate New York, then it got really hard in Vermont and worse still in New Hampshire. Nothing quite like reading signs on and off all day reminding truckers (and cyclists) to move into the right lane because ahead was an X % grade of X mileage! That was also an era of primitive or non existent cycling gear. We had no cycling, shorts, gloves, shoes, decent rain gear and the helmets were the old-school "hairnet" leather POSs that were only good for keeping one's cracked skull from falling into separate pieces on the pavement.

The other is when people say what they paid for the new car but don't bother mentioning a trade (where the dealer made up for the low price.) Others go nuts trying to match the new car price and can't figure out why they can't get the same deal.
I'll visit again when I'm in the market.
I have questioned a few of the ridiculous ones only to be chastised by a host.
And this causes us trouble because people read these and, of course, they believe them!
I'll hear..." Well, I KNOW that some people have paid much lower prices"
Not fair to the shoppers eitehr who will write down these numbers and go from store to store frustrated because nobody will do their deal.
don't you have goodyear triple treads? rotate them every 5k miles they should last a long time. more than long enough to decide what your next car will be.
just pointing out that volvo is a very popular brand locally.
those cars are just too nice for me.
last year someone ran into the back of my fusion.
i was the 3rd car in line stopped at a traffic light and saw them coming from at least 200 yards back. they noticed me about 1 second before they ran into the back of my car.
doesn't compare to the out of control driver who hit me on the interstate in 2002.
missed them the first time, but they made sure i got them the second time.
This is worse than junk mail and I can't believe there are enough responses to justify this kind of spam...
There are more ways than you could think of that the dealership makes money off of every sale
Wow, car dealers making money off every sale. :surprise: Who would have thought? For a second there I thought we were a charity.
