egghead got her financial aid info from the last school we were waiting for.
they are all different, so i told her to review them with her guidance counselor, for an independent evaluation.
I do a lot of commuting with my bike, but rarely during the winter. With me there are 4 people that routinely commute to work where I work at. Two of them actually bile to the train station and carry their bike on the train then bike when they get off to get to work. Plus there are plenty of nice good bike paths around the Chicago area (most unpaved but I still have the hybrid for that).

Yes, I know, there should be a "report post" option. I already asked. :shades:
That's what I'm doing right now about twice a week (want to do more often). My ride is 16 miles and I'm not in good enough shape to ride both ways.
This year I am planning on two or three century rides.

I was watching CNN this morning while doing my new exercise program and they said California has introduced new laws against text messaging or talking on a hand held cell phone while bicycling! Just a friendly warning about what might be coming to your area too one day.

Back in the Dark Ages, I wrote a letter to Alchoa Aluminum just because I heard that they had scholarship money. They sent me a check for $1k. That was quite a bit of money then. I never had to pay back my federal student loan. They deducted 10% each year that I worked. After the first ten years, I was all done. There is still money out there. You just have to be persistent.

My commute is a paltry 12 mile round trip. In my defense part of it is quite hilly and there is always wind--usually 20mph or more. I"m sure you remember the "wind comes sweeping down the plain" refrain from the musical Oklahoma.
Have you seen the new Shimano Di2 electronic shifting? I wonder if another Japanese giant corporation will have to worry about outside interference causing unexpected deceleration, when the chain accidentally jumps from a lower to a higher gear--probably when traveling under a power line up a really steep hill. I have heard from the owners of my local bike shop that the front shifter is incredibly easy, smooth and precise--much better than even the conventional Dura Ace. It's all meaningless to me unless it can be shown to hold up well in adverse conditions, has long battery life and comes in at a much lower price point like the Ultegra level.
On my commute today there was a young (father?) with one or two kids in the backseat of his small 4-door sedan stopped next to me at a busy intersection. He was busily typing away at a "very important" text message that required all his dexterity and focus--so much so that he failed to see the light change then felt the need to really gun it through the intersection. I think for cyclists the use of any technology that exacerbate driver distraction--even if it is covered by current laws--has made the road a less fun and less safe place. After all what does it matter if we obey the law? If some distracted jackass hits you on your 15-30 lb bicycle with their 2500-5000 lb vehicle we all know who comes out on top.

Driver--
I wouldn't try in on any of my bicycles, but I'm sure I could do it on my unicycle, if I knew how to "text", but I'm not likely to learn. I can't understand why texting is better than talking anyway. When I ask my college students they say that they need text when their friends are in class so as not to disturb the instructor. Huh? No wonder they're distracted while driving, they're distracted while learning--they were probably texting while the topic of distracted driving was being covered in driver's ed. They text while sitting across from friends/dates at restaurants. They probably text during sex letting some unspecified others know how well it's going. I just don't get it.
About two weeks ago, on I-35 in OK, a young woman was killed and several kids who were in the car with her were seriously injured. She had just taken a phone call and lost control of her SUV.

It's understandable, but a bit ironic that in many jurisdictions cyclists are not allowed to wear headsets. Obviously, an iPod really will limit what you can hear coming from behind (also limited by wind rush), plus my hearing isn't what it used to be. I actually like to listen to the various natural roadside noises--something one virtually never hears in a car.
My question is why wouldn't any municipality want to regulate those thumping car stereos--the ones in cars that cause a small seismic event when they pass. Isn't that equally dangerous? Isn't sound fidelity more important than volume? Isn't there a reasonable db limit that still allows for loud music? What's the cliche...Sense is wasted on the senseless? In this case that would be hearing sense-less.

Better fabrics that wick moisture efficiently, a personal office, a change of clothes, a fan and getting to work before the sun gets too high also help. That can be a real challenge in the OK heat in mid-August. Most of my students roll out of bed for morning classes without bathing or showering so it's a toss-up as to who really smells the most. Brushing teeth is also viewed as optional. Plus I always have a few of those anachronistic hippies and "arty" bohemians who never (or seldom) bathe. That is a real treat!

I'm impressed that you can ride a unicycle. Even more so that given such ability you haven't learned how to text! I like that.
You commute 12 miles to work on a bike? You must use a really good deodorant.
We have a gym at work. If I ever were to bike in the morning (I take bike on train in the morning), I'd just take a shower. :shades:
Plus I can wash up at work.

But, many here seem to think if he wasn't texting he would be doing some other stupid thing, like shaving, or reading a race form, or playing with a cube.

I know what you mean, I am glad I came through the world before texting became an integral part of life. If I had to text all the time, I would probably move to some remote island. I don't even care whether I ever learn to text....I probably make an average of 2 cell phone calls a month, and that is more than I want to do.
They showed on TV how emailing is so important in todays living. These 2 workaholics were actually in bed with their laptops and they were emailing each other, not enough time to talk during the day?????? :confuse:

There are several downhill trails that range from hardcore to "easy going" and also several cross country trail loops. I don't plan on doing hardcore so I don't need a serious bike. Even a hardtail would suffice, but a dual would sure smooth out the rougher spots. Ideally I would like a bike that I can lock out the rear shock... So far I have struck out on my attempts to locate a bike in my price range so I am thinking I will have to save a bit more and up my price range some to get want I need, but still have some of the things I want... So the looking continues.
In the meantime I will continue to use my current hardtail, but it is barely adequate. But it does the job reasonably well and actually, tomorrow is overhaul day for it. Wheel(s) rebuild, new crankset and bottom bracket, maybe a new fork with more travel, quite possibly some better tires (it still has the stock tires which don't bite the dirt very well) and a thorough cleaning and she'll be ready to hit the trail again. It still has rim brakes and the frame will allow for discs, but the hubs aren't disc hubs so that's another time... However the rim brakes work well enough and have kept me on the trail safely enough so I don't see a terrible need for them. (the main reason for bike shopping is this bike is actually my wife's bike. She isn't too fond of me "tearing it up", so the upgrades are to make it more durable on the trails until I find a bike I want... Plus it'll make it a little more enjoyable for her when she rides it)
This summer a buddy and I plan on hitting as many trails as we can. It's fun, doesn't cost a whole lot of money and the only thing you burn is calories. Well, okay some gas getting to the different locations, but there are still a few trails around locally that could probably be biked to, ridden, then bike back home. Although, I really don't think I want to be riding 15-20 miles with mountain bike gearing... any faster than 20 MPH and you're really working to keep that pace. Even 20 MPH is tough to maintain on a flat stretch...
When I was a personnel director, I averaged receiving 75 emails per day. In addition, I averaged 40+ telephone calls from principals, teachers, etc. and about a dozen clients/teachers came to my office. I responded to all emails and telephone calls. After working 12-14 hour days, I refused to answer the phone or do emails at home. As for texting on the cell phone, never in this life time.
When I retired, my successor deleted emails and erased telephone messages. He left after 18 months. My former superintendent asked me to come out of retirement. After 40 years what do you think my answer was to him?

Being the technical wizard that I am, I’m sure that I could learn how to text. If the air heads I’ve seen doing it have figured it out I know it’s within my capabilities but like you I don’t care to do it.
After putting up with emails all day long at work and even there I draw the line, I won't do it at home. People at work know if they want a quick response from me they have to call. My sons have stopped emailing me because they know I don’t answer emails at home. When they need help with things they call, so I know they know how to talk.
Now we’re into this Instant Messaging (IM) thing. That gizmo ain’t got a prayer with me being a participant.

Richard.....what if the only way into heaven is to text the "secret password"? :P
I have no use at all for IM and only do enough texts to answer family members who are nuts about it. We have four cell phones in our plan. Mine would be better served as a doorstop.
I've already sent mine in by the old method. It should be "on file."
Richard perhaps has done the same thing?

Quick answer since I know I'm off topic. You can only take it at the front and rear of each car. No more than 4 bikes are allowed per car. In Sacramento, the light rail (like a tram) is not very busy. I do a reverse commute so it's never been a problem.
I lived in Connecticut for 8 years. I remember seeing bikes once in a while on Metro North to/from Manhattan. I don't remember seeing bikes in the subway though.
Cyclist Peeves
Drivers who fail to provide sufficient lane space (where there isn't a bike lane available), especially where road construction takes place. This is limited to roads where cyclists are allowed by law to travel.
Really loud, obnoxious mufflers/exhausts including noisy city buses. Blaring car stereos.
Drivers who pull around and then immediately turn right cutting off the cyclist. Can't wait an additional 5 seconds?
The @$$holes who scream obscenities, threaten, tell me to get on the sidewalk, and hurl objects (pizza, cans, ice, etc.). They are a small, but persistent group mostly made up of groups of 3-4 young men 16-25 years of age, rednecks, road-ragers and drunks (really scary).
Driver's who fail to signal their intention (I'm not a mind reader).
Other cyclists who antagonize drivers. Those drivers may then may take it out on me.
Auto Driver Peeves
Cyclists riding two abreast who don't move to a single file until I pass. When I ride in a group we try not to antagonize drivers and only ride two or three-abreast if there is a designated lane or shoulder.
Cyclists who don't obey or understand state cycling laws including, but not limited to: cycling against traffic, failing to obey street signs, ignoring traffic lights. I will say that most bicycles will not trip those in-ground sensors so I will stop, and when traffic clears travel through a red light if no cars are coming up behind me to set off the sensors).
Distracted cyclists who are a danger to themselves. Cyclists who drive at night without lights, reflectors, reflective gear. Can you spell r-o-a-d--k-i-l-l?
Cyclist's who fail to signal their intention (I'm not a mind reader). Cyclists can, and do, know how to use hand signals.
There are other peeves like unleashed dogs, stinging insects, heat, humidity, sun in the eyes, head wind that brings me to tears, but they have nothing to to with driver/cyclist interaction. Maybe my fellow forum driver/cyclist chums have others. Or maybe those of you than only drive have others.
I guess my real point in creating this list is that most drivers seem to have no clue as to how their actions and distractions impact (hopefully not literally) those of us on two wheels, whereas those of us who cycle almost always drive so we do understand both sides.

The league of illinois bicyclists has a website and people can track mileage there. Some claim 10K+ miles.
will most likely end up buying a used bike that is in good shape.
Be careful and really look it over. I was considering that and went to look at a used bike that was only "a year old" and ridden only a few hundred miles. One of the first things I did was measure a 12 link section a chain (should be 12 inches when new) and it was stretched out to 12.25 inches. That indicates at least 2-3K miles on the chain and is stretched enough to wear out the back gears. So we were looking at $75 to 100 for replacement parts. That and a few other things would have put the total cost close to what I could find a similar bike on sale new.
I really don't think I want to be riding 15-20 miles with mountain bike gearing... any faster than 20 MPH and you're really working to keep that pace. Even 20 MPH is tough to maintain on a flat stretch
I would say that 20 MPH on a mountain bike would be hard to keep up for more than 30 seconds. On a mountain bike you may be able to keep a 11-12 MPH pace on flat land on a smooth hard pavement. Mountain bikes really aren't built for speed. Now what you are mentioning sounds like speeds one might expect from a hybrid (they look a bit like mountain bikes).

This morning, I was off to the detail shop. They removed it all from the car, no trace thank goodness. The carpet dealer picks up the rug Monday morning and told us not to worry.
What did I say to my wife when all of this transpired? What CAN you say when the tears are flowing? When problems have solutions, you just go with the flow. At least when she leaves for the beach next week, she and the girls will be in the Explorer. There are some blessings in life.
