While in a mall in Va Bch I went to a fancy burger place. All the way thru the line I was asked if I wanted mushrooms, fried onions, tomatoes, etc. By the time I got to the register my 3.50 burger came to almost 7 bucks.
Next time I went there it was without customers so me being the wise guy I am I went to the register and paid for a burger, then went thru the preparation line expecting to hear about the stuff I could add. Not a word, not even a "do you want mustard". The checkout girl obviously signaled the burger maker that it was to be a plain jane.
Now they have even 1 less customer than before. I guess I'm a buffet guy. I like one price that doesn't change no matter what you add or don't add. Cars too!
As far as floor mats, I would rather trash the old ones and install nice new ones for 20 bucks a set yearly than 1 expensive set from a dealer that I would have to clean and reuse.
My next reaction is that here we separate our garbage into 5 groups - what a pain. 1)regular garbage 2) compost type stuff including food, paper towels and tissues, 3) plastic bags 4) glass and plastics 5) newspaper and cardboard. This makes more sense to me so you won't be killed by food poisoning.
I am shocked that in Florida all garbage goes into one bin. I think separating the garbage beforehand will have the same effect for saving the environment, and will keep many people from becoming ill from contaminated bags.
kids dressed up like hockey players riding their bikes I wonder how we ever survived. I do ride the Hrley alot without a helmet
I had to go back and address this post lrguy. As the safety administrator that makes no sense at all. Every year there are people who have brain injuries or die when they could have lived...if they had been wearing a helmet. Life is too short and it is too easy to make a mistake that you cannot reverse.
Helmets are mandatory here on bikes and motorcycles, but there are lots of morans who die or have serious injuries, when a simple helmet would have saved them.
Spelling patrol here: If you keep spelling it "moran" instead of "moron," well, um - you might be putting yourself into a group which you would rather not be in.... ;-)
As for the substance of it - totally agree. My best friend from childhood was killed the day after college graduation, when she hit a pothole or piece of debris or something on her bike (not a motorbike, just a plain ol' bike), and fell. Her head hit the curb and she was killed instantly. It was tragic and didn't have to happen.
Isell, are you seriously saying that all of Mexico is like a crime-infested neighborhood? Come on now. I've wandered around in Guadalajara and other major cities for shopping, going to restaurants, sight-seeing, and so forth. Never a bit of a problem.
Would I drive into the countryside at night, not knowing where I'm going? No, of course not. But in a major city, in the major areas, keep your wits about you and don't flash your cash, you're not going to have any more problems than you would anyplace.
And I choose to live until I die. Not die so I can live. I do not expect you to understand, but I am an old salt who chooses to enjoy to the max what I have left. Many states have helmet laws but thank goodness I can enjoy the open road without the encumbrance here. I do wear one if my trip is more than county roads or old highways. We all have priorities and values, views etc. I do not agree with some of yours and I do not expect you to agree with some of mine. That difference in people is what makes this world wonderful and interesting.
Spelling patrol here: If you keep spelling it "moran" instead of "moron," well, um - you might be putting yourself into a group which you would rather not be in....
And, more importantly, it ruins the comedic irony in the image I posted earlier if one isn't aware of the difference.

I have seen the ice in the urinals before but never understood why it was there. It is water, right?
I'll bet that restaurant was charging for ice because they hate to give away free tap water and want to charge you for something. Whenever I see a dumb charge on my bill I just pay it and subtract it from the tip. If they can have a policy for making dumb charges, I can have a policy for lowering my tip.
How about a maroon? A Mr. B. Bunny was fond of the saying, "he's such a maroon."

The odds of crashing your bike are remote unless you 1. drink and drive 2. drive too fast for conditions and 3. drive aggressively. Once you take those factors out, it's actually a pretty safe experience unless you have less than 6 months experience behind the wheel. I always wore a full face helmet and figured those who didn't were a bit reckless. Still never figured making helmets mandatory was likely in states with effective bike lobbys. Discussions about religion, politics and helmet laws is a waste of time for the most part. . People believe what they want to believe. Why knock heads. The helmet laws are a non-issue for me. Would rather talk about the weather and auto sales stuff.
I don't even want a new car unless it comes with the manufacturer's mats. If I don't see them in the car during the test drive, I ask about them. They were missing in my convertible. My salesman immediately went to another convertible with the same interior color and pulled them out for me. It seems ridiculous not to buy them. It's like purchasing an oriental rug without the pad to go under it to protect the floor and the rug. Why would you do that?
Please promise us that you won't go wandering around in Mexico by yourself or even with a friend or relative. It is now much too dangerous,..drug thugs, gangs, thieves, rapists, etc. The resort areas are pretty safe overall, but do NOT go into the towns and cities unless you're in a group. Also, Americans are not the most welcomed visitors at this time. We want you to enjoy the puppies, the new car, and the vacation trips. You're a smart lady. Use that good brain when traveling to Mexico.
Cliff, I have always admired you for driving a Harley. I've even seen your picture where you are sitting on it. What impressed me was that you are a bright guy who drives a Harley. It destroys the old stereotype of bikers being dumb and mean. Also, I realize that you are a free spirit of sorts. That's a great thing. I'm saying all of this to point out that it's the country roads and old highways where you really need the helmet. You could really get hurt through no lack of skill on your part. As biancar said, you could hit a hole in the road. Think about this---wear a helmet, not to please the world, to please your family who loves you. Is it fair to them to put your life in such danger? I know that you won't agree with me; that's ok. Still, I had to say something about this for your sake.
I have noticed that as well. I pick on him so much that I just let this one pass. He's so "foggy" at times, I'm afraid that he may have taken that picture to heart. :P I'll have to say, "Bless his heart." Here in the South, we think that as long as we say that, we can continue to pick on a person.
"...to expose and proclaim the ignorance of another person."
Kirstie, That was a VERY profound post. I strongly agree with you. I pick on the guys at times about their spelling. My intent is to be humorous, but maybe point out something that will be helpful. Did you see this picture of a guy who hit a truck while driving his motorcycle. It was lucky he was wearing a helmet. I heard he did survive, probably because of the helmet.
By the way, you can be the best motorcycle driver in the world, but a lot of car drivers don't watch for bikes. You can be badly injured or be killed, and it might not even be your fault.
My guess from the picture he didn't survive. There is an ambulance there and if he were alive the medics would be there working on him and he wouldn't be in that position.
Either that or the picture is staged.

One more local story about a poor young lady riding a motorcycle who was slowing down to turn off the highway. Her stepfather was in front of her. The driver of the van didn't slow down, her bike was imbedded into the front of the van and now she is paralyzed, probably forever.
Here is part of the story: On Tuesday about 3:25 p.m., she and her stepfather, William, also a motorcyclist, were riding in tandem northbound on Highway 6 when they slowed to turn into a private drive. Her stepfather made the turn but Jackson’s Harley Davidson was slammed from behind by a northbound Pontiac minivan driven by 32-year-old James Armstrong of Waterloo. The van hit her bike with such force that it was embedded in the van’s front end and skid marks from the bike marked the road for more than 50 metres before both vehicles came to rest, said Const. Graham Williamson of the Burlington OPP detachment.
Jackson was thrown from her bike and her head smashed into the van’s windshield. She landed in the centre northbound lane of the highway.
I don't give advice, just facts so you can make an informed decision about what you want to do.
Dying is one thing but being paralyzed or a vegetable dependent on family members for 40 years is another story.
Couldn't have said it better myself. That's a great point. If you're not worried about your own life, think about your loved ones and the one's who may have to look after you.

I ride a bike and I am a believer in ATTGATT(All The Gear All The Time). That said, I think helmet and seat belt laws are an unwarranted interference with the law of natural selection. As for the dangers of riding, risk mitigation is 100% the responsibility of the rider. For example, when I stop at a sign or light, I keep the bike in gear and watch my rear mirror until the vehicle behind comes to a complete stop. I roll off the throttle and cover the brake whenever I'm approaching a driveway or cross street and I see is a car that may pull out or turn in front of me. I keep a twelve second sight distance in all but the densest city traffic. I could provide more examples, but you get the idea. Anyway, the riding statistics actually aren't all that grim once you filter out the drunk/drugged/unlicensed riders along with those who think they magically possess Ricky Hayden's riding skills. In that case, you had better wash all of the jars, cans, and packages that you purchase at the grocery store. There is no escaping bacteria.
I don't have a phobia about germs but I wash off the tops of cans with soap and water before injecting into the can opener. After seeing a roll of sausage fall from the refrigerator case in a store and roll 15/20 feet (about 10 years ago) then be picked up and put back on the shelf, I wash the roll of sausage too before slicing through it. I wash apples before eating them but I just peel my bananas and eat them; just like a monkey.
Now having said that, I'm the one that does the grilling at our house and when 'you know who' saw me ready to grill last week she said, "do you expect me to eat from that thing"? I said, "what's wrong with that, the heat will kill all the bad things". She says, "the grates are BLACK they weren't that color when we bought that grill" (she's wrong again, they were black just not that black). Not to lose control of the situation, "I said "that's where the flavor comes from; you in or are you out." She wanted to eat just a salad but was too hungry to do that so she ate what I cooked and it was delicious".

We don't know what we do eat in some cases. We were at a Boston Chicken store years ago and watched the fellow bring a tray of several chickens out to put in. One fell onto the floor. He picked it up and put it back on the tray with the other 5 or 6. We mentioned it to the manager... who really didn't seem to care that we thought it unsanitary.
The county health department did have interest. That store was closed before too much longer and became a doctor's office. :P
I think the chest impact killed your guy. Driver, there are many ways to die. Like roadburner, I drive very defensively on the bike. My neighbor is a very high ranking law inforcement officer and his observation is that as bikers get younger with less experience the accident rate climbs dramatically. Driving can be dangerous. You shelter your life and I will live mine. Let it go and let us get back to cars and the car biz.
The local hyundai dealer mailed me a flyer today. Actually got 2, 1 in my wife's name also (since we have cars registered in both names that they service at the Honda store).
anyway, big tent sale!
I was real excited to open it up, hoping for some nice enticement to show up. But no, just a couple of lease offers.
Not even mention of a BBQ, or a free trinket. Nor was their a secret number to check on the big board.
So, IOW, even though I am the type that would show up for damn near any meaningless freebie, nada. straight to the recycle pile with them.
That said, I think helmet and seat belt laws are an unwarranted interference with the law of natural selection.
What a great way to put it.
As for the dangers of riding, risk mitigation is 100% the responsibility of the rider.
Also, an excellent point. Defensive driving is probably the best way to stay out of trouble on a bike or in a car.
My concern is the guy in the car that doesn't stop at the stop sign. The guy half a sleep who runs into you. No matter how careful you are or how good a driver, there is the unknown factor of the other driver. All I am saying is the helmet could make a difference. Hitting your head against a tree at 60 mph or even 10 mph could have bad consequences with or without a helmet, possibly less with the helmet.
the grates are BLACK they weren't that color when we bought that grill" (she's wrong again, they were black just not that black). Not to lose control of the situation, "I said "that's where the flavor comes from; you in or are you out."
We bought our barbeque at a store that only sells barbeques. The salesguy (sales story) said to leave the junk on...it gives the food flavor. Just use a wire brush to get big chunks off when you are done. Turn the heat up and scrape away.
Your sausage inceident reminds me of when I was a kid. Coke would be in bottles and was delivered in red trucks. The delivery guy set a case of Coke down on the ground while he closed the door. A dog came along and peed on the bottles - they were near a tree. Those bottles probably went into the cooler!
. Driving can be dangerous. You shelter your life and I will live mine.
No problem. Just one question though. Do you wear seatbelts in your car?
Don't worry everyone. I am not going to go there again. Just wondering if the same rules would apply. I won't comment, just would like to know the answer if you don't mind.
Youse guys (I include me) really take hold of an issue and run with it. I may as well pile on.
When my son was born, he urinated on me, barfed on me. I used to go camping a lot. Sanitation was pretty far down the list (OK, dead last) of things I protected while camping.
As a college student, with little in the way of common sense, I ate some pretty unsanitary things (two day old pizza....left over from a weekend party), in some pretty unsanitary places places (namely dorm cafeterias).
I've shaken enough disgusting and sweaty hands, hugged enough relatives who I'd say had questionable hygiene, been kissed by enough members of the opposite sex (either voluntarily or unvoluntarily), and I've survived to say I'm not too worried about bacteria.
I'm still here. While I do believe generally you shouldn't do something purposely stupid regarding sanitation, I'm with Kirstie. This obsession with bacteria killing products and activities have gone way over the top.
Just think of all the sweaty palms that touched the steering wheel of that brand new car? All the disgusting shoes that planted themselves on the carpet of that new car. All the sticky kiddy hands that messed with the knobs of the radio in that new car. You'd probably never buy one if you knew.

>"do you expect me to eat from that thing"?
We don't know what we do eat in some cases. We were at a Boston Chicken store years ago and watched the fellow bring a tray of several chickens out to put in. One fell onto the floor. He picked it up and put it back on the tray with the other 5 or 6. We mentioned it to the manager... who really didn't seem to care that we thought it unsanitary.
The county health department did have interest. That store was closed before too much longer and became a doctor's office. :P
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
The local hyundai dealer mailed me a flyer today.

No problem. Just one question though. Do you wear seatbelts in your car?
Don't worry everyone. I am not going to go there again. Just wondering if the same rules would apply. I won't comment, just would like to know the answer if you don't mind.
