trying to apply an Einstein rule that if you're traveling faster, you become smaller proportionately

Nice try! Unfortunately, the contraction is only along the direction of travel so the cross section remains the same. Moreover, at speeds large enough for the contraction to be significant, the bugs hitting your windshield will behave more like small artillery shells. :P

Too bad that the HP doesn't take "overall average speed" into consideration when they stop you.

Years ago, there was a comedian by the name of Stephen Wright who had a joke along those lines:

"I got pulled over by a cop who said I was doing 65 miles per hour. I told him I wasn't going to be out that long."

My wife was playing with the Garmin after a trip I took. She found where it listed highest speed. She said "says here were you going 93 MPH?"

    Oops....Busted!

That’s nothing compared to the time Mrs. jmonroe saw a post here when we were off topic talking about dishwashers. We were talking about the noise some of them make and I believe I said something to Richard about there are two dishwashers in our house; one makes noise and the other is pretty quiet.

Man, I still get some noise about that one.

The Salvation Army is your favorite charity?

    Really?

The same Salvation Army that occupies what is probably the most expensive piece of property in So. Calif in Palos Verdes overlooking the ocean?

The same Salvation Army that nitpicks everything that is offered to them as donations?

They should sell that property, move their headquarters to a poorer community and donate the difference instead of ringing their stupid little bells at Christmas time!

    Rant off...

My murano is my first car with tpm. Drove over some scrap wood today and my wife said --- "Didn't you see that?" I said I thought it was cardboard and when she replied --"probably had a nail in it" I said nahhh. Went home for an hour and when I started the car the indicator was on. Took my gauge and checked all the tires and the right front was down a couple of pounds. Got out my 110 volt pump and added the air but just in case got the soapy water and had my wife pour it on the tire while I turned slowly. BINGO. Off to Mr. Ed's fix o flat and all is well. First tire issue in years. My jeep is still unarmed --- fingers crossed. The punctures seem to come in threes.

Well, I certainly put a fire under you when I said that the Salvation Army was my favorite charity. Indulge me a moment while I explain.

Our town (at that time) was hit by a tornado in 1983. We had damage along with thousands of others. Power was out for a week; looters were rampant; fly by night contractors were knocking on doors; etc. The tornado hit around 8 PM. If we had been in our upstairs bedroom, we would have been killed---roof caved in on top of it. Outside of the National Guard, the Salvation Army was the first on the scene. They stayed in our town for two weeks---feeding us, offering us shelter, providing phones, etc. I never forgot their many kindnesses and support.

During the Vietnam era, when the Red Cross was SELLING cigarettes to the guys on the front lines, the Salvation Army was providing them free---in addition to giving many other things.

When Katrina hit, the Salvation Army was the first charity to arrive on the scene.

We have a friend who was a Salvation Army director here in North Carolina for many years. His salary was less than that of a school teacher. If his wife hadn't been a good real estate salesperson, they would have had very little.

I understand your frustration with the location of their headquarters, but I do believe that the organization does many good things.

Thanks. We just returned from the local fireworks display. It was pretty spectacular. With all of our country's problems, it is still great to live in America. As I watched the fireworks, I was reminded that 3/4 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence lost either their property or their lives so that we might enjoy freedom. I am also reminded of those young people who are fighting for democracy today, and of those who have given their lives and service over the years so that I can sit here tonight and post these remarks. God bless America, as well as our good neighbors.

I actually had a nightmare about Oxmoron Mazda last night. I dreamed that I took my MS3 to those dimwits for an oil change(I must have suffered a closed-head injury in the dream as well). Anyway, in the dream the idiots ripped out my cold air intake so that they could show me that I needed my intake and throttle body cleaned. It made me so furious that I'm sure I would have suffered a stroke if I had not woken up in a cold sweat.
    Seriously.

I have heard similar stories and I'm sure the Salvation Army does a lot of good.

My experience is based on when my mother died and we sold the house, we had to get rid of things FAST! They came through the house and they were so picky and snotty even though everything was spotless. Old perhaps but clean and usable.

" Oh, we will take that but not that" etc. I threw them out and I called other charities who were happy to take whatever I wanted them to take.

And, yes, their National Headquarters sits high on a hill in Palos Verdes CA one of the most lavish and most expensive properties anywhere. They should sell it and move to a industrial area somewhere.

Just my take on them, that's all.

Sorry you had a bad experience with the Salvation Army. We have donated money to the Salvation Army every year. My wife and I both came from families that believe they do real more good for people, than a lot of other charities. I don't know what religion it is based on or what religious beliefs Salvation Army people believe in, but I do believe they really help people who need it. I did look up the headquarters and found it is an accredited college.

In addition to mobile programs such as disaster relief, and homeless soup lines, the Salvation Army U.S.A. Western Territory currently operates hundreds of permanent facilities including 307 Corps community centers, 31 Adult Rehabilitation Centers, 13 summer camps, 36 Silvercrest Residences, and 6 adult day care centers. The territory runs its own accredited, two-year college in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.

The only negative I know of the Salvation Army is the excellent George Bernard story and play called Major Barbara. It had a big influence in my life I think.
Major Barbara is a Salvation Army Major and she needs money to keep things going. She doesn't have much luck in rehabilitating people either. Her father will donate lots of money, but she is reluctant to accept it. He owns a munitions factory as well as a liquor company. His employees have nice homes, good lives, and are thankful for their jobs. Is it ethical for Major Barbara to accept this money?
Maybe, a good story to think about on Independence Day!

***I decided to add, just to avoid confusion, I would side with the father. He is making a product that is necessary, and he is employing people and making the economy work. Charity is good, but the money has to come from somewhere, which a lot of people don't seem to understand.

I was only staing my personal opinion.

We lived in Rancho Palos Verdes and evey tme I would drive by that beautiful location overlooking Catalina Island I just thought something was "wrong".

They will stand in front of stores rining their little bells for petty donations and yet they have that facility.

    Maybe it's just me..

BTW, Goodwill was very happy to take anything I would give them!

Isell, you are probably right in your example. I am not taking sides. Just my experience. The problem I have with Goodwill is they take your stuff and then resell it. It is really a for profit organization.

At least the Salvation Army came out to look, they aren't so fancy that they have an unlisted phone number in that swanky California neighborhood. :P

Actually, the Salvation Army is headquartered in Alexandria, VA.

I don't know what's up with the California deal. It certainly does not reflect how they operate in this part of teh country.

Well, I'm back. I just missed Richard's story about his wife and the ice tea party in the Sebring..... See? If you weren't tea partying that would have been just water and no problem....

I also caught the Nova Scotia comments. We honeymooned there back in 85. We loved it. Would not have minded doing that for the anniversary but have no complaints about the trip we just got back from.

We indeed took in a couple of the taverns while in Williamsburg. The one for the "common folk" was the more entertaining of the two but both were great experiences. I've never seen so many people play instruments that haven't been made in a few hundred years in all my life. Glass armonica (invented by Ben Franklin) and such.

We went down to the Outer Banks one long day. We'd always wanted to do that but never had and decided it was only a couple of hours away so let's give it a shot. Long day and lots of driving but loved every bit of it. I could almost live there. The only thing that might keep me away is that I've lived my whole life within 50 miles of a big city (NYC and Philadelphia) with all the benefits of that. What is it from Kitty Hawk to, say, the research triangle? 3 hours?

Anyway, we are back and I'll try to fake it if you're talking about what happened in my absence....

While the Camry is still not my cup of tea it is a very good distance car. Quiet, comfy, stngy and will an excellent stereo. If it only had a bit of road feel...

Thanks for straightening that out. The college is right on the Pacific and you can even watch whales from the grounds. Makes me want to sign up!

Let's face it, you got to do what you got to do to get new recruits so you can raise even more money.

Just because the Salvation Army helps others doesn't mean they have to suffer.

If you want more "feel of the road" move up to a Kia Optima....it actually has more road feel than a Camry.

I don't know if anyone has an answer for me but the question is "Is it necessary to put a sealant on your driveway?"

Yesterday 2 young guys came along with a cart and they are doing driveways in the neighborhood. I thought, who knows what they are actually putting on my driveway, and if it goes wrong how will I ever find them again?

I told them I did some research and some people believe in sealing a driveway and some don't. That is partially true. I remember one guy saying he had neighbors and one seals his drive every 3 years for 12 years, the other one never seals it. After 12 years the two drives look the same.

If I did get it sealed I would find a company that has been in business for about 25 years. But, I am thinking I will just take my chances and get it repaved one day.
If it ain't broken don't fix it kind of thing.

Resealing blacktop driveways is a frequent scam in this region. It's always someone coming unsolicited to do the work because they happen to be in the neighborhood or they have leftover stuff from another job and they're going to give you a great break on price.

The quality of the material is often the problem. The TV and BBB are always running articles about people being scammed.

I'd do it myself or call a reputable company that will be there if it doesn't look right in 2 months.

Occasionally people will stop in trucks, sometimes with no company name painted on or with just a magnetic sign on, wanting to trim one or more of the trees in the front yard. I just wave them away telling them I'll call a local company if I want tree pruning done that I don't do. They always look disappointed because they seem to think gray hair means no brains; they prey on older people.

I also mention our city's no soliciting law for someone who gives me a terse response. I live a two tenths of a mile from the police chief and his wife, both police. We get great response times in our small city.

Don't have anyone stopping to seal our driveway because it is concrete. :P

Glad that you enjoyed your anniversary trip to Williamsburg. Like the Outer Banks, it's a lovely place to visit. Kitty Hawk to Raleigh is a three and a half hour drive. When I hear people speak of living permanently in a vacation area, I always suggest a two week stay during the off season. For example, December, January and February can be pretty dismal on the Outer Banks---cold, lonely, isolated, etc. If you are an artist or writer, those months are a great time to work without interruption. The Pinehurst area, where I live, is pretty quiet during the winter months. The PGA guys and other golfers have moved on to warmer climates. That just leaves us old folks to enjoy the peace and quiet. We do have some local die hards who play golf in 30 degree weather. All in all, it's a life style choice. It works for some and not others.

I am now a driveway expert---or should be. As mentioned earlier, we just did a new walkway, curbing and driveway project. It was a three stage project coordinated with three different businesses. We replaced the old wood timbers which bordered the drive with concrete curbing in a color selected by us. They now have many colors from which to choose. You do this BEFORE the drive is installed. Cost was $1K. We replaced the old brick walkway with stamped concrete in a design and pattern that was drawn by yours truly. You can't tell the difference between it and real stone. Real stone estimates were $8K. New brick estimates were $6K. The stamped concrete in our color and design choice was $2K. Our visitors claim that it is beautiful.

Now for the old asphalt driveway. Some said seal; some said resurface; some said colored rock. Sealing a driveway depends on the severity of the cracks and the number of tree trunks whose roots are under your driveway. I could have sealed (more of a quick paint job) for $500. Our cracks and roots were pretty bad. It MIGHT have lasted 3 to 5 years. I moved on to the complete resurface possibility. Estimates ranged from $5K to $7K---included tearing up old drive, removing roots, and putting down new drive. Estimates were high due to the price of oil these days. I then moved on to the colored rock possibility. Estimates were between $3k and $5K. We found a reputable company which drove us around to see their completed projects. We were impressed. We gave them the job for $4K. They left the old asphalt, but dug up all roots showing humps and major cracks. They then put down a rock sealer before spreading the rock. We chose bluestone rock in the larger sized pieces. We did do a 12 foot asphalt ribbon at the bottom of the drive to allow for the turning of the car wheels at a 45 degree angle. This keeps your rock from being disturbed.

Why did we choose rock for the drive? In case of tree roots in the future, the rock area can be repaired and will never show any difference in looks or color. If you repair an asphalt drive, you will be able to see the repair area. After it was all done, I noticed an unexpected benefit. Pine straw falls all of the time on our drive. On an asphalt drive, the straw really shows up and has to be blown off constantly. With the rock drive, you hardly see the straw until you get quite a bit on it. I don't have to use the blower nearly as often.

Total cost of curbing, walkway, and driveway was $7k. It gave the house a new look, coordinated with the brick and house trim, and made us very happy. I did tons of research and estimates, but I believe that the results and cost were worth the effort.

I don't know if anyone has an answer for me but the question is "Is it necessary to put a sealant on your driveway?"

Yes it is necessary to seal a driveway. For asphalt driveways it helps prevent the asphalt from deteriorating due to exposure to the sun and weather. If an asphalt driveway is never sealed it will start to turn a gray color. This means that the bonding agent (the asphalt) has deteriorated and the driveway can start to break up. Sealing also prevents water from seeping in and freezing (breaking up the asphalt) and protects it from stains and salt and other deicing agents. (these reasons are the same reason for sealing a concert driveway).

So yes you need to seal your driveway, however this is something just about everyone can do for less than having someone else (however sealing asphalt driveways can be messy). A driveway should be sealed every 2-8 years (depending on the quality of the sealer being used).

So that's what they do there! Train officers.

44 acres of some of the most expensive real estate in the United States!

Sorry, but I keep thinking of that place when I see them ringing their little bells.

44 acres! I hate to guess what they could sell that land for!

I was a couple of miles from there last Saturday for a mini HS reunion. It takes a VERY clear day to see Catalina like that! They had to wait a long time to get that shot!

"...they seem to think that gray hair means no brains;..."

You are SO correct. We have experienced this since moving to a retirement area. I had a landscape guy who actually blurted out that I certainly knew what I wanted and what price I would pay. I responded with, "There may be snow on top of the mountain, but there is still fire in the furnace." ;)

We bought our first house in Orange County when I was 23 and there was little extra money to do anything. I sealed our diveway and I thought it looked pretty good. Some guys came by with a truck and they told our next door neighbor that they had just finished another job and they had "just enough" material left to do his driveway at a "bargain" price.

They did the work and it looked good. Our neighbor gloated that he had paid less than I had for the material alone.

A week later it hadn't hardened. It was black tar or something and he had to pay through the nose to get it removed and redone.

    I didn't say a word...

Aaaaarrrrrggghhhh! Now you'll have me checking out how that piece of real estate fell into their hands..... I'll bet they have an answer of some sort as to why they train folks in that plush an environment. Not today, however. We are going to my SIL's to hang out in the pool.

richard - we live in vacation area - the Jersey shore - but it is only a bit more than an hour to Philadelphia and under two to NYC. Until a gazillion people decided to follow us is was deadly quiet in here in winter. While I didn't like that so much I like the fact that they tore up so much in the way of woods around here to build houses even less.

At least now they've gotten of leveled off so we know what to expect. There was a time when the population here doubled in just a few years.

I wonder if there's a Salvation Army/McDonalds connection. The Ray and Jean Kroc building in Dayton was just built on a prime set of acres adjacent to I75 which had been an estate that fell in disrepair. The house on the estate is being refurbished for use, luckily.

click through the picture on the home page to get a feel for the size of the building.

It's very possible it was donated to them.

Many years ago, a few families owned much of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

I suppose if this is the case, a restrictive clause could habve been written into it.

It just sends a wrong message. At least to me.

Thank you for taking the time to explain so clearly. I have seen that stamped concrete and it is amazing....looks like stones but is just made to look that way.

I have saved your reply in MY Documents and will check it when the day comes that the driveway needs replacing. Sounds like a great way to do it, for a lot less cost.

Yes it is necessary to seal a driveway.

Thank you for your very instructive reply. I haven't decided to get the driveway done or to wait and just replace with the formed concrete one day. The house is only 2 years old so I understand there isn't a rush to do it, in fact you should wait awhile, I think. Although the drive looks pretty gray right now. If it can last 8 years it might be worth getting it done, possibly next year.

That was a good story. The two young guys who came around with a cart were pretty good sales guys. Very persistant, and seemed like ambitious kids, so on one hand I was tempted to give them a chance.

On the other hand, if they don't do it right how will I ever find them again, and what guaranty do I have the job will be done properly - none?

Your story was a good one about what can go wrong, so I don't want to even give it a try. I would rather find the guy who has been doing it for 50 years.

or to wait and just replace with the formed concrete one day

From that I would presume you have an asphalt driveway. If that is true you should seal it after the first summer season. So if it is two years old and never been sealed you should seal it.

If you want it to last 8 years without resealing it use a high grade sealant.

You spiked my curiosity. I am working on this Crestmore College (Salvation Army) location in California. Over twenty websites yielded no history on the college---only current information. I finally gave up and called the campus---no answer, no switch board, and no voice mail. I'll try tomorrow if my feeble brain can remember. The college is a two year seminary associate's degree with a $10K+ price tag per year. Admissions does not require the SAT or other standardized tests---just high school transcripts ,three letter of reference, and a personal essay. They claim to have graduate work, but I couldn't find a program for it. I'll keep you posted.
