Just dropped in to say hello! I haven't contributed here since I left about 6-8 months ago as I took on a new position at a Nissan dealership as an Assistant Sales Manager. Been doing it for 3 months and I love it and it's interesting to view things from a manager's perspective.

When I have some time I'll be sure to drop in and chat more. All the best to everyone in 2011!

    >My problem has been that when I return to the posting, there is nothing there to paste.

There must be some variations from different operating systems (OS) and versions of IE. I have had an empty box a couple of times out of perhaps 50 when I use the back arrows, wait for the browser to reload all the ancillary pieces for the previous page, and then return to the page using the forward arrow.

In support of Edmunds on this being a problem with Microsoft's IE browser, I have had at least one quirk happen while typing into a posting box on another website since Christmas. I do believe there's something funny about Microsoft's implementation of the posting boxes. I may be wrong, but I suspect the boxes are Java applets, if I'm using the right terminology.

So let's hope this is part of the January 6 updates. Please remember that changing one or more things may cause additional problems. I'm expecting a new problem to surface if things are updated. Having built and managed a website in my previous life, I understand all there is to go wrong.

The Edmunds site works so much faster and consistently well, other than the posting box for some of us still using the archaic Microsoft browser, that I applaud them for the change.

Nice to hear from you boomcheck. How is the baby doing?

Always nice to from someone in the business, especially when they were a frequent poster with good info and insight....and glad you are upwardly mobile - sounds like a good professional move.

Once in awhile we even hear from Greenpea too! Check in when you can, we don't have many actual sales people left around any more (Isell counts as half since he is retired).

Quick question. How many here have a high definition monitor and do you like it? Can you simply replace your old monitor with a HD monitor or does the cpu have to be HD capable? Thanks guys, any info would be appreciated.

I am thinking of a new car. Of course I always am !!

Boomchek, Glad to see you again. Congrats on the move up.

Hey, Perhaps you could explain the Leaf to folks considering an Electric Car.

Not sure how it stacks up against the Volt, etc, but a quick tutorial would be nice along with some cost factors. Thanks.

Your orange dial Mako is really nice looking. You and I may have missed out on a great deal. When I ordered my watch, I forgot to fill out the form for a surprise gift bag from Orient. The form said that it "may" include a second watch for free. Still, I can't complain. My watch was 40% off plus the T-shirt was a nice bonus. There is also a nice black face watch with a black band that I would like to own. Perhaps I'll give that one to myself for my birthday.

When I questioned her, she claimed that I still had entered a SunPass booth. Go figure that one. I wonder what they would do if I never mailed in the $5?

That’s cheap. Not too long after they started E-Zpass on the PA Turnpike a guy I knew told me that he got into the E-Zpass line and couldn’t back up because there were cars behind him. So he goes through then pulls over and goes back to one of the toll booths (says he was almost run over 3 times) and tells the guy what happened and the guy says, “you’re not the first one to do that”. That didn’t make him feel any better but he pays the toll and asks for a receipt. The guy says, “don’t worry about it you’re paid up. I’ll fill out this form to get it taken care of. The state is prepared for when this happens so you don’t need a receipt”. Really? About a week later he gets a $38 ticket in the mail because the camera got his license number. He calls to explain the situation and is told, “without a receipt”, he has to pay the ticket.

You could try not paying the ticket but I understand it is very easy for states to get their payments today with the computer systems in place by yanking you’re license and it’s just as easy to get more money for being late with the payment. For 5 bucks I’d chalk it up to experience.

I was looking at a Craigslist listing for a 2005 Chevy Malibu. Asking price was only $1500. The down side was that it had 197,000 miles. The ad went on to say that the milage was from being towed behind a motor home all it's life. The seller implied that because of this there was very little wear and tear on the car.

What would you people think of such a car?

This may not help, but i recently purchased a 25" Hannspree LCD multi-functional widescreen monitor. As you may recall, I destroyed my cpu trying to install the monitor. At any rate, my new monitor is great. I am really enjoying it.

As for my pension, that free health care could disappear if the state budget crisis continues.

Ain't that the truth! Our governor is trying to do everything he can to knock the stuffing out of our pension and health care. Fortunately he suddenly has had his "Katrina" bu going on vacation and letting the lieutenant governor go at the same time just in time for our blizzard. The president of our State Senate had to run things. They had just created a $141K a year lt. Governor's post exactly for times like this. Oops.

The thing that the blizzard fiasco has accomplished is it showed the emperor has no clothes and he'll have a harder time pushing his agenda further.

A black Orient watch as a birthday present? You did know that my birthday is a week from today....

Oldfarmer, If you (your son) can live with driving a Malibu, go for it.

The mileage is irrelevant if the price is good. With that said there is one thing I'd be cautious of. Drive wheels run the odometer through the transmission.
Is it FWD or RWD? If I remember that's the one with servo steering motor.

If the vehicle was towed with the drive wheels turning thru the trans without the use of the trans oil pump supplying oil, you may have a trans rebuild coming your way. But, hey for $1500 and you like the car, think of it as a $3000 car with a brand new trans. Just don't plan to sell it any time soon.

I really dig the Speed Yellow! What year is that? I think you have to go for an '09+ as they have a newer engine design that doesn't have the IMA problem that has plagued quite a few Boxster/Cayman & even a few 911 owners.

Definitely take it for a ride. I think it will be good enough for you to at least be tempted to cheat on BMW.

mako, richard....glad you like your watches. Orient makes some really nice, well built, reliable ones for not a lot of money.

Unfortunately, I wasn't in Key West long. We were only docked there for about 5 hours. So, we kind of rushed our way through getting on and off the trolley at places that looked interesting. Definitely looking to go there to spend a few days with the significant other at some point, though.

We had so much fun on the Christmas cruise, we're already planning to do the same thing this upcoming December, only this time in the Mediterranean.

"...if you (your son) can live with driving a Malibu..."

Ha ha. This wouldn't be for me (3 cars) or my son (drives the Caddy) it would be for my nephew, if I can tear him away from his new girlfriend.

You make a good point, why were they towing it with the drive train connected? I'm no expert but aren't you supose to disconnect that for long tows? 2005 Malibu is FWD so maybe that's not possible. I agree towing an auto trans across country with the drive train connected could destroy the tranny. I was just thinking about wheel bearings and struts.

    Good catch.

    Sounds fishy.

If I'm not mistaken, that Malibu is FWD and you can't flat tow that car without damaging the transmission and damage would have happened very quickly.

So, if they towed it with the front wheels on a dolly that would mean the rear wheels ran the speedometer.

Don't think so but I could be wrong?

It always used to amaze me how some customers would be turned off by (to me) the dumbest things.

They didn't like the way the dash lights looked or they thought the tailights were ugly etc.

I was reminded of that yesterday when I was getting out of our 2003 CRV in a parking lot.

A woman asked me what year it was. she was looking for a good used one.

I told her it was a 2003 and she siad.." I can't stand where the shifter is located so I may have to buy something else"

For those who don't know, it pokes out of the dash.

So I said..." It it really THAT big of a deal?"

" Yes it is...why would Honda put it there?"

" Well, you'll get used to it in a day or so but if it's THAT big of a deal you should probably buy something different"

Then there were the people who hated the spare tire hanging off the rear door and other people who thought we spoiled the looks of the new CRV's because we moved the spare inside!

    Amazing...

It's a 2007 with only 20K on the clock- with the CPO warranty it would be covered for another 2.5 years or 80K miles.

Actually, it is not the CPU that you have to worry about. It is the GPU (otherwise known as a graphics card or in laptops something other than the Intel graphics processor) You can go to a 24" monitor on any computer built in the last 2 or 3 years, for older computers only if they have an upgraded GPU.

To use a monitor over 24", you need a GPU that has a different type of connection, either a dual linked DVI port, a Display Port (DP) or HDMI.

This morning, I was buying some gas at the self serve Esso station. I walked in to pay and I saw a delivery man bringing in a big box of something on his shoulder. So, I held the door open for him. I missed that a lady was coming in behind him so I let the door go and she had to open it herself. I felt badly, so I said, why don't you go ahead of me and pay for your gas first.

Well, she had about 6 lottery tickets she wanted checked, then she told the clerk about how she has a blue light that came on 3 days ago and she doesn't know what it is for, and how her teenage daughter had the car out the night before and thought she caused the light to come on. Then she bought 6 more lottery tickets.

She left without a thank you or even a nod. I paid for my gas in cash and left within 20 seconds!

I'll just send in the $5. It just irritates me because I tried to make sure that I was in the cash line.

When they put tolls on the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge, many people complained because you have to exit the highway to get to the toll booths. People with transponders can just drive straight through. Since tolls are very rare around here, that system caught a lot of people off guard.

Many said that they didn't notice the signs to exit and then went through the roof when they got a $52.00 ticket in the mail weeks later.

The DOT put up much better signage along the route to help ease the confusion.

So $5 ain't all that bad. ;) It is still a pain when you aren't used to something though.

    lol... that's the one.

Well, actually that one (Galloping Gertie) is at the bottom of the Narrows. The tolls were removed on the one that replaced it when I was a kid. Now the new one stands alongside.

Both of the newer bridges have a slightly better design. ;)

"You did know that my birthday is a week from today..."

You want me to remember your birthday after you jumped my bones last night? Regardless of what health plan we have, I would vote for it if it would make you well and not cost you a bunch of money. I'm just worried about how it will effect people from all walks of life. I think that perhaps my post didn't reflect what I meant to say. I didn't mean to sound "silly" or shallow. You know me better than that.

I do admire your wonderful sense of humor in the face of your physical problems. No amount of money in the world can buy that level of character and bravery.

You little devil you. Why didn't you jump in and explain her blue light situation so that she wouldn't worry? I know. You were irritated because she bought the winning ticket, right? Actually, I can identify. I hate waiting in line to pay for gas while a customer in front of me buys 10 lottery tickets of various types. Perhaps there should be a separate "toll booth" to purchase those tickets. :D

All right smart [non-permissible content removed]. Mind your manners or I'll send you a list of those movie titles that you think are in poor taste...along with some of the quotes from those movies.

BTW, why does it surprise you that people have different tastes in car designs? Don't tell me that you are as indifferent to design as you are to color. I can see the lady's point. When Honda went from the boxy design in the CRV to a more aerodynamic style, it turned me off totally. I like the Pilot much better because of the boxy lines.

Also, what color is your CRV and why did you select that color? What about the color of your old Explorer? Does your wife select the colors?

That was my point. What one person loves another one hates.

I was talking more about the petty things that 99% of the people don't care about such as the placement of a shift lever. That was that lady's only complaint. A dumb thing in my opinion.

The 2003 CRV is white and the 2011 is Glacier Blue and, yes, m wife wanted Glacier Blue but she would have been happy with some otehr colors too. The Explorer is green and when we bought it, the color was the LAST thing I cared about.

When they changed the looks of the CRV, I would say that the vast majority of people really liked the changes but there were a few, a very few, like yourself who liked the old style better.

Of course, the same thing happened every time a model changed.
  • sterlingdogsterlingdog Member Posts: 6,984
Now that you are retired, you may be able to answer this question more objectively. Why do you prefer to own the CRV over the Pilot?

I can understand something on a car driving you crazy enough that you wouldn't buy it but so far the ones I'm hearing don't qualify - like that shifter. I can see where there would be a color so hideous that you wouldn't touch the vehicle nut I'm pretty easy about it.

I like the earlier CRV myself but I'd be happy to take a current one.

Funny thing on the cat food front. If you try to give my cat the good stuff (canned) she won't touch it. Likes plain old Meow Mix and nothing else. I suppose she'd eat the dog's dry food in a pinch.

The dog, OTOH will devour a can of food in nothing flat.

I'm still trying to figure out the logic of the slow snow removal around here. They cut the number of people who plow snow way back. Now the logic is the cause is employee slacking. You would think they'd figure out that more snow and fewer people to plow would make slower snow removal. Maybe I'm just not mathematically inclined.

We've been trying a new method of removal - it's called melting.

I think this falls into the "no good deed goes unpunished" file.

Once in 20 times I'll get behind someone in the TSA line who has their, well, let's say stuff, together. They already have their bag open so the laptop can go in the tote immediately, if they have a jacket or coat it's in another tote, they put their shoes & 3 oz bottle bag into a separate tote and nothing slows down at all.

Then there are the other 19 times.

Stores are much the same. What, have exact change ready? Surely you jest. Have the cheque nearly entirely written until the final total appears -- why bother? Oh, and let's drag out those coupons in the express lane.

Avoid these opportunities at all costs. Certainly drives commerce, doesn't it?

I was in what is laughingly referred to as the express line of a local supermarket the other day, & a woman in front of me paid with a check. She wrote it out, copied the pertinent info into the checkbook register & then handed to the cashier with her store-issued ID, while those of us in line behind her got older.

We're in the 21st century, so why is she paying for groceries with a check? If she has a checking account, she also has either a debit or an ATM card. Swipe that through the little terminal right by her elbow, punch in her PIN, take her receipt & go. But pay with a paper check? That's so 70s.

Thanks for letting me vent. I'm feeling better now.

Actually, they still use "Esso" in Canada. Speaking of such, we still have a few PURE OIL stations in this country. When I was a child, my father owned one of them. It was built like a little house with a peaked roof. What a clever marketing idea from PURE OIL. He also sold fuel oil for heating homes. His trucks were blue and white. He had a nice business until he lost it. He began drinking and gambling and running around with other women. He lost the business in a poker game to the husband of his mistress. He owned several businesses over the years, mostly funded by gambling money when he was lucky. One by one he would lose them. It was an interesting life for us. Some years we ate peanut butter and some years we ate steak. He was a good guy who just never found himself. Mother stuck it out through thick and thin. My sister and I just tried to stay focused and get educated. It all worked out.

I intended it as a temporary vehicle while awaiting the new Mustang, but am now reluctant to give it up. It fits perfectly in the garage and the color (red) is so nice and shiny. Plus it has 4WD, the larger engine (V-6) and goes in snow.

I looked at replacing it with a brand new one, but after 2007 they replaced the console hand brake with a foot operated one. That, to me, is a no sale. I like console hand brakes. To each his own!

Perhaps there should be a separate "toll booth" to purchase those tickets.

There is, it's called swiping your credit card at the pump. I can't remember the last time I went into the store to pay for gas. I use my credit card for everything and have since the mid 90's, it's just too convenient to do it any other way.

I think this is what 'jimbres' was talking about when he was getting older at the supermarket line.

C'mon join the rest of us, at your age you can't afford to lose time doing things the old way. :P
