Beautiful country though & it sure beats the flatness of South Florida...will always love the time that I lived up north even though the snow got to me as well as that relentless cold, miss the changing of the seasons most of all!

OK, I checked the system on the ride home today. To stay on topic, I was on the PA Turnpike and I used my E-ZPass.
The car was fully warmed up (that wasn’t hard to do, it was 58 F today at around 2:30). I set the temp to 75 F and I had warm air at the top front vent and when I manually selected the rear temp control to max it got pretty warm at the outlet back there.
With that experiment done, I’d say your system is not working properly if you can’t get warm air at the top front vents when you set the system for heat. Like I said before, I can’t remember the last time I set the system for heat to come out of the top front vents. It is so easy to just select “Auto” and let it do what it has to do to get to the temperature that you select. I’ve even got Mrs. jmonroe doing it like that now in her XG 350. Up until I convinced her to do that she didn’t like how the system worked. I think they designed that “Auto” thingy to eliminate confusion for some drivers. She’s happy so I’m happy.
I hope this helped.
Again, healthy and Happy New Year to all my poster buddies here at Edmunds. May everyone buy the car of their choice and get the “feel of the road”.

I also don't like air blasting me. And I abhor having the temperature changing all the time, going from hot to cold.
I like the old fashioned way of using levers/knobs to select where I want the air, fan speed, AC only when I push a button, and a fixed temp. If I get hot, I turn it off. Drives me nuts when the car decides to just send cold air out. Oh, I also like to be able to set the vents to outside fresh air with no blower, but that hasn't existed since the 80s!
OK, rant off.

The MassPike always had sponsorship of Fast Lane - right now it's Citizen's Bank Fast Lane. The Pike would get about $100K a year for the sponsorship. Recently the Mass Pike Authority was rolled into the state highway department which uses federal highway dollars. The Feds don't like selling naming rights to public highways so Fast Lane is gone as of tomorrow and it's going to be called - wait for it - EZ Pass!!!
The biggest issue with calling it Fast Lane is that people without transponders would often take the name literally and pull up to the empty toll booth - well it was the Fast Lane!!
NH added tolling at speed on Rt. 95 in Hampton. 95 is about 13 miles long in NH but if you want to go to Maine or White Mountains, you gotta pay your $2.
Those bridges have had their issues over the years. I can't remember which one "sunk" several years ago. That sure messed up traffic. Kind of like the Hood Canal floating bridge when it went down in a storm.
I find it odd that they are putting a toll on it before they rebuild it.
I agree with the AC on all the time issue. However, once I figured out how to use the auto climate control on my Accord without the AC on, I'm a happy camper. It doesn't help in hot weather (rare where I live) but I love setting the temp and then not worrying about it.
And...
Happy 2011 to all my Edmunds buddies! Just remember to say "Twenty-Eleven" and not two thousand, eleven.
Happy New Year to all!

I was with you on this, however my current car has a pretty dang slick auto feature, it never blasts and keeps the temp exactly where I like, plus with the AC on as part of the deal I am cool in the summer and never have steamed windows in the winter.
I car/pool and/or vanpool frequently and several of the other drivers are always fooling around with their controls - which results in 10 minutes of defrost blasting, then the heat on way to high, then turn it down, then windows fog up, then fan up, then down....etc, only a 30 minute drive but feels like a sauna after.
I think it is a pacific NW thing, but through out the winter about half the cars are driving around with all windows steamed up. Can't believe they can see, and can't believe that stuff does not start growing in their cars!

Yeh, I saw that, and there are people who think crows are smarter than dolphins. They hang out in Murders because they are very social and possibly talk to each other.
WE got to a movie last night and The Tourist is a good movie starring Angelina Jollie. Especially for seniors, it is like an old fashioned mystery...low key, lots of great scenery in Venice, a train ride, a unique chase scene, Angelina Jollie, and a great trick ending....oh, and did I mention Angelina Jolie. Also, your significant other will love it because it is a romantic mystery and also stars Brad Pitt!

Also, when you turn the whole thing off (as in, push the off button and the screen goes blank), you get the same temp air through the vents. That I have yet to understand.
on the TL especially, it figures (in auto mode) that you must want to warm up ASAP, so not only does it blast the hottest air it can, it blasts it as hard as it can.

"...take a picture of your license plate..."
That's how the beast sucks you in. Before you know it they will be tracking you in your own driveway. Wasn't one of the new taxing ideas to put a transponder on every car so they could track how many miles you drove and tax you per mile? The fact that they could then track all your movements wasn't mentioned.
BTW, if you need any tinfoil hats I buy them by the gross.
Oh, a HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all.

The old people don't bother me like they did years ago (wonder why?) but I would miss the hills in upstate NY. We're thinking of being sunbirds, that is living in Florida most of the time and coming back to NY for the summer. I think trading the hills for warm weather might be ok. :shades:
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
If you are going to do that, you better start looking for an older Cadillac or Lincoln, the bigger the better, and cloth roof and wire wheels will help you to fit right in.
On a more serious note, think this plan through carefully. We started with one week in Florida for February and got up to four. But we got bored out of our minds after 3 or 4 weeks. This year it is back to 2 weeks, just enough time to thaw out, get some sun, see the Manatees (who are freezing this year), wear lighter clothes, get a break from snow etc.
But, there are so many more activities and events, and family and friends and/or work things that it is actually better to be at home. Not to mention a much more comfortable home to live in, where we know where everything is.
I think being in Florida for 4, 5 or 6 months of the year sounds better in theory, then what it really is in real life.

Don't need a transponder to do that. If your state has annual auto inspections, they get the information every year anyway.

That’s exactly why I will stay with the “Auto” setting. I used to override it but then I decided to try the “Auto” setting towards the end of last winter and liked how it worked in my cars, so I’ll continue with it. I have been in some cars where it doesn’t work so well and it is better not to use it. I’m lucky, “Auto” works just fine in both of my cars.

You must have missed my gripping story of my purchase of the 1993 Deville for $1200. My son drives it but he allows me to pay for gas and repairs.
We've been working into the St. Petersburg area the last few years. BIL has a condo we use for free.
I think you are right that once you live someplace long term the luster wears off but the northeast winters are starting to get to me.

I understand. The older we get the more we enjoy the sunshine, and the less we enjoy ice and snow.
Some people love being in Florida for 4 or 5 months of the year, and I understand that. I think though it is a good idea to try it for a long time, or to really think it over before you commit to something. We looked at buying near Bradenton, new 3 bedroom homes for about $140,000. By the time you add taxes, upkeep, insurance, maintenance, etc, you can rent a place and if you don't want to go one year...or decide to go to Portugal instead, you aren't compelled to go to Florida.
I just say, think it over carefully. At least you got the right idea with the DeVille, not so sure about the Dodge Vandura.

No kidding. It's crazy what they can get away with in naming movie these days. Remember the movie, I think about a high school teacher, "Mr. Woodc@#k"? Unbeliveable.
How was the movie by the way? Reviews weren't that great here. The first movie of the "Fockers" series was pretty good.
Then what would you guys have done without me?
We'd probably try to recruit mrs. jmonroe... to post on your behalf. She'd do that, wouldn't she?
Personally, I think naming a movie like that is just low class.
There were 8 of us who felt it was OK but not good. However, it was much better than last New Years Eve when we went to see UP In the Air, only one couple liked that one and it wasn’t us.

Well she doesn’t give a hoot about cars but if you guys wouldn’t mind getting off topic and told her where there are some good furniture sales, I’m sure she’d stick around for a little while.

On both of my cars, once you’re in Auto, that’s it. The system is in full control and you can’t turn anything off. But since it works well, that’s OK with me.

$140k for a 3 bedroom? Don't forget to add for the chinese drywall and fly by night builders.
In the good old days you could rent the house out in the Canadian off season.
Make enough bacon to buy a new car.
Yes, but before I drove 2 Jeeps and an AWD X3...still not crazy about snow.
I do like playing tennis in the bubble at home....except truding through snow to get into the bubble.

Forgot about that - that could be a big problem. I think a lot of the houses are built pretty well, as long as they aren't hit by a tornado.

It is definitely quieter in Florida these days. However, rates have not gone down.

the latest one is a 7000SF mini-mansion (maybe not so mini) that went to foreclosure. Looked like it was a nice house, but the prior owners took everything they could. Cabinets, fixtures (light and plumbing), countertops, doorknobs (actually, I think they took doors too). pretty much stripped everything you could possibly reuse or resell. Truly amazing to see what people do to something they can't even pay for!

Once this friend bought a resale house. The previous owners took every light bulb and toilet paper roll with them, basically everything that wasn't attached. Talk about cheap!

My BIL is trying to do that....it is a bit of a process, and then you might not get it. Has had his name in for 2 houses, 3 bedrooms, pretty new, needs a lot of work which he will like doing, about $70,000 each. His bid goes in, takes awhile, then he gets declined, maybe a higher bid comes in.
I heard one fellow got a really nice house that way. The only problem is he has no neighbors, he is the only inhabitant on the street!

Who pays for foreclosures....guess?
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
Just checking in and noticed the discussion about FL houses. Just returned from the Ft Lauderdale area. Very definitely lots of housing there that is in foreclosure....lots of nice houses in nice neighborhoods, too.
Folks there drive some very nice cars (Lambos, Bentley's, Masserati's, etc). But, I saw a couple pull into homes that had "Auction" signs out in front of the driveway.
Feel badly about that. Except, I would think that their cars would be an easier and quicker sale than their homes would be if their finances are that tight.
That amount of footage makes it a FULL mansion. My neighbor is quite wealthy and has a 10,000SF home. It makes my place look like the gardener's shed. His garage is bigger than my house.
One more thing about Florida is the need to spray for bugs on a regular basis. I understand there are some big enough to saddle and play polo on.
Still, with all the possible negatives, I keep coming back to visions of all those rust free cars and I smile. I think I could make a real hobby of buying every hooptie in sight.

That's disgusting! But most Americans would fall asleep halfway through that presentation because there was nobody named "Snookie" getting drunk.
We're doomed!
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Yes, the presentation is a little dry. "Snookie" would be a great idea, or even a car chase, or a reality show seeing which financial guy can scam the most money.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
The car is part of the reason those people got into trouble with their houses in the first place. The car, they can still drive, but if the house has lost over half of it's value, then it is much cheaper to just rent a similar place....probably half the cost.
The first wave of baby boomers will be 65 this year....I wonder if that could cause a boom in real estate in Florida?
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
If they are driving cars that have sticker prices in the 6 digits and go broke they are the only ones to blame.
If I had a Bently in the garage I would sell it and pay off the house.
