"... The banks real estate agent said there are two offers and they are over the asking price..."
If you have learned anything on this forum it is to not believe the sales person when they say they have a couple of other buyers in the wings.

I meant to reply but forgot and had to go back. I don't know which is worse, car salesmen or real estate agents. I doubt if the other agent is supposed to even disclose that information, so he is probably making it up.

When we told our agent that we were also working on a private sale he jumped in with "I can act as your agent in that sale if you want me to". Well, the reason she was selling the place privately was to save the 5% real estate commission, so I don't think so.

Real estate agents in Florida must be desparate these days, this Edmunds course has prepared me well. I used to be very trusting, however, I have learned there is a whole other world out there.

However… there are also many benefits to using electric razors, including:

    * Electric shavers can be used anywhere and anytime
    * It's extremely difficult to get nicked or cut with an electric razor.
    * They contain more features that can easily be used for sideburns and
    moustaches/beards.

That first one should be moved to the other column. Even batteries run down and if you are a camper you’ll look like Big Foot by the time you get home if you believe that. :confuse:

Number 3 I am not so sure about either....it is probably easier to use a blade to even things off.

And number 2 is questionable in that it is pretty hard to actually cut yourself with todays blades...unless you are in a real rush or half asleep when shaving.

So that makes it about 6 to 0 for blades!

    . . .and no guilt.

Surely you jest. My confirmation class put the fear of God (literally) in me for just thinking about stuff that was fairly common to think about at that age. Messed me up for a long time -- many would say permanently.

    8. Don't try your own plumbing or electrical work unless you are damn good at it---and you aren't ! You're like me. You're lucky if you can change a bulb.

That was a very comprehensive list you provided about doing work around a house. However, those are two things I WILL do myself. Some of the worst workmanship I have come across over the years has been done by the so called “pros” in those fields. The biggest farce is the “registered” handle these guys like to throw around.

FWIW, the best home building workmanship I have seen on a consistent level was in the South. The new home construction I saw when I moved to SC was far better than what I see in the Burgh area. I’m sure one of the benefits of home construction in the South is that you don’t have construction going on in cold weather. I have to laugh when I hear about winter home construction in the North when they say, “oh, these guys are used to it. They know how to work in the cold”. Yeah, they know how to hurry through a job to get in out of the cold but the poor workmanship shows it too. Not necessarily right away but it shows its ugly head a few years later. Our first house was a new house and I waited until it would be started in the Spring. It was finished in September and I’m convinced that the reason I didn’t have any problems is because of the good construction weather.

I actually thought of you when I made that list for Houdini. You're very good at doing things like that. Still, many people are not. For those, it is better to leave it to the experts. I will say this. I don't favor a general contractor. I rather sub-contract my work---choosing my own guys. I used the same plumber, electrician, and carpenter on 12 of our houses. They were good and could be trusted. When we moved here, I used a general contracotr. His guys were not up to par. I've had to have a few things re-done. His painters were awful and his carpenter couldn't level a pencil.

As for construction in the winter, there are actually some weeks that it can be done due to mild weather here. The last couple of years that hasn't been the case. As you know, we've had some harsh weather for us.

‘burner’…you might get a kick out of this.

Son #1 is getting his ’95 Trans Am track car ready for the season. He knows he has to put a clutch in it (has about 80K on it) but he feels what seems like a miss under certain conditions so he wanted me to go with him for a ride on Saturday. It was a great day for that and he brought his 9 year old along for the test ride too.

It could be an ignition problem but since he needs a clutch I told him to do that first then see if he has an ignition problem. The site he goes to for guys with this car all say the opti-spark is the culprit. Since that widget costs at least $250 and is a pain to change out and he knows that because he did the water pump last summer. Therefore, he knows what’s involved to get to that beast so he’s willing to take my advice before he leaps into that job.

Anyway, while we’re out testing the car he tells me how intentive his son is about how he goes about shifting and he asked a while back, “how do you know what gear you’re in since they are so close together”? He shows him what’s involved and he goes on to tell me that ‘grandson #1’ likes to do the shifting when he’s in the car. So, I get in the back and his son jumps up front and sure enough this kid can do the shifting while my son does the clutch work and he doesn’t lose a stroke doing it either.

Here comes another generation that’s going to the track in a few years. :)

I would consider taking photos of before, DURING and after to prove the work you did, the materials you used and the methods. This may give a purchaser peace of mind and may result in a higher sale price than a similar unit where there is no documentation provided. Just use your digital camera, take photos of anything and everything and then they can be edited into a small presentation binder to show potential purchasers.

I have used it in the past and it does seem to work. Good luck with the project.

I think you said (I could be wrong but I am trying to remember) the last time you used a blade was 30 years ago or something when you were in the military. The technology has changed. I think an electric is more agitating, you have to go over the same spot several times in different directions. A blade is once, and it takes off the outer layer of skin so you can grow some new skin...good exercise for the facial muscles. ;)

A rotary won't do a number on your face. It's the easiest on it. If you go from electric to blade or vice versa there will be an adjustment time.

Of course the funny thing there is you have to prepare exactly the opposite for one or the other. As has been discussed here you want your face absolutely dry for electrics. You want it wetter than wet for a blade. If you can manage it in the shower the blade will just glide and get everything. The whole shaving brush idea is the same thing - getting things insanely wet.

I have tried electrics and I can honestly say that you get a better shave with a blade. Now if you want a real close shave you can't beat a straight razor. Seriously, if you can find a barber that still does shaves with a straight razor try it, you will be amazed.

    "...consider taking photos..."

I agree 100%. If even for your own amusement it's fun to look back and see how things looked before you started and during the construction when everything was a mess and you thought you'd never finish.

I remember one of the first jobs we did was an apartment. In one room where we were covering up a wall with paneling we got silly and painted a number of scarey faces on the wall to amuse my wife's brother who was about 11 at the time. We took pictures and then covered everything up.

Now almost 40 years later I look at those pictures and wonder if anyone ever took down that paneling and became convinced that satanists once lived there. :)

Though unusual for this forum, and probably not appropriate, I have a car story. A good friend of mine who always drives big SUVs himself called me this afternoon. He has purchaed a new car for his wife.. It is a Mercury Grand Marquis! Imagine my shock. He told me that his wife's 2000 Town Car had reached the end of the road. Pun is intended. He tried out a new Town Car and the Grand Marquis. He said that they both drove the same, but the GM was half the price. I should mention that his wife has no interest in cars, and he buys her a new one when she needs it. When he called me, his wife had not returned home from a meeting. He was going to surprise her with her new car. We talked a bit longer, and I expressed my favorable opinion of the GM. I congratulated him and hung up the phone.

You're going to love this part. I mentioned it to my wife who was shocked. She said, "Roz will hate that car." I said, "Listen. Roz has always said that she doesn't know one car from another and could care less what Doug buys." My wife said, "Just wait and see." Later this evening the phone rang. It was Roz. She wanted to speak to my wife. The conversation went something like this:

My wife: Hi, Roz. I heard that you got a new car.

    Roz: I'm mad as hell!

My wife: Why? What's the matter?

Roz: Doug bought me a damn police car!

My wife (Trying to be diplomatic): Oh, I'm sure it's pretty. What color is it?

Roz: It's white. All it needs is a blue stripe and a light on top. I'm not driving that ugly piece of sh--. I told him that the car goes back to the dealer in the morning. If I drove that car to your house, your neighbors would think that you were being arrested. Can you believe that he did something that stupid?

My wife: What did Doug say when you told him that you didn't like it?

Roz: He stomped out of the kitchen and went to bed early.

My wife: I'm sure that things will work out.

Roz: You've got that right. He's taking that car back and I'm getting another Town Car. Thank goodness he parked it in the garage. i just hope that no one sees him leaving in it in the morning.

They both talked a little longer, but you have the bulk of the conversation. I can't wait to see how Doug unwinds this deal. If he doesn't call me tomorrow, I'll call him on Wednesday. I doubt that tomorrow will be a good day to call their house.

Moral of this story: Never believe women when they say that they don't care what they drive!

I think there are at least 2 other lessons to this story.

    1) Never make a major purchase for your spouse without their input.

    2) Not every one sees a GM in the same way.

    Great story though! :)

May have a long wait on that richard. Your friend paid and drove it off the lot... it's his. Don't think a dealership would unwind a deal on a car that has already been titled. Your friend can trade it in, but likely will lose thousands. May be cheaper to keep the car and get rid of the wife.

It's still here. There is Rutherford, New Jersey, 8 miles west of New York City. Then there is Rutherford Dance Shoe Company, Rutherford Electrical Supply Company, Rutherford School District, etc. Still, for a boy's name, you never hear it these days. The way that people shorten things these days, I hate to imagine what they would call a boy named Rutherford.

Moral of this story: Never believe women when they say that they don't care what they drive!

That is so true and I found out about that when I bought my first Hyundai in 2005.

We are at the table (Mrs. j and Son#1) finalizing (I thought) a deal on a Sonata V6 that we had test driven along with an XG350 V6. All of a sudden she chirps in:

Mrs. J: What car are we talking about here?

    Me: The Sonata.

Mrs. j: Is that the blue one with the cloth seats?

    Me: Yeah, why?

Mrs. j: I like the other one (doesn’t even know the model). The one with the leather seats. I think it was the gold one but I know it had the leather seats.

Me: I thought we agreed that neither of us cared if a car had leather seats or not when we started looking about 3 hours ago.

Mrs. j: Well, now that I’ve seen the one with leather, I like that one better.

We are dealing with an almost greenpea and he has this horrified look on his face and is not sure what to do now. His coach, that is walking back and forth, listening to what is going on says, “come with me and we’ll get the paper work for the XG350”.

We start the negotiating all over again. Well, not really, because I have a price in my notes for what I will pay for that car too but once again she spent more money (about 3 grand) than I was expecting.

I’ve always heard that they have that prerogative and she puts it to use…OFTEN. :surprise:

In the 80's, my Dad gave me a rotary electric razor (can't remember the brand) that you plugged into the cigarette lighter so you could shave while driving. This thing worked by grabbing each hair of your beard and ripping them out by by the roots...a very painful and uncomfortable experience.

Fast forward 20 years or so...we are having a garage sale...and the razor is in a box with many other "treasures" priced at two bucks each.

A guy about 60 or so asks me if the razor works. I told him to take it out to his car and try it first to see how he likes it. Out of curiosity. a watched him go out to his car...a BRAND NEW Mercedes S-Class...well over 100 large.

He spent at least 5 minutes working that baby over his face...came back to me and said it works fine...gave me the $2 and left. There has to be a moral from that story somewhere.

    Rule #3:
If your wife likes a car you have shown her, never, ever, show her a more expensive model. There is no way she will be satisfied with the first one.

Richard, I know the Panther platform cars pretty well. While I will agree that the TC and the GM do drive very similar there are differences. The number one thing being the GM has been stripped a little. Your friend has to be looking at used ones because they are both fleet only now AFAIK. The GM (in fleet version) no longer has the air suspension, the power passenger seat and a few other things.

Comparing a newer 09+ GM to a 2000 TC it will seem like a downgrade. The interior materials are better in the TC (both in 2000 and now) and there are many more amenities in the TC (better stereo, dual zone climate, parking sensors, auto open/close trunk....and more).

Trust me J, the Accent isn't a bad car...my kid really likes it & as a dd, & I got to drive it last week & it was just fine. The new model looks sorta like a "baby Sonata" which ain't too bad. We will check it out when it comes to market.

At this point, not sure what the wife'll choose for her next ride. She won't spend more than $17k plus her car I know. So we'll have to wait & see. Her Mazda3 is driving fine with no problems which is a good sign...we'll get it to 100k I believe.

Now Craig will hate this when he sees it, but - she probably wouldn't have hated the GM as much if it had been another color. The white one does scream police car (well, a fire chief might have one as well). Decades ago when my folks had one car that looked like a police car I kind of liked it. I'd watch people slow down when they saw me tooling around in it.
