Thanks for looking that up for me. You nearly had it. I'm looking for the SECOND grade primer from that year. It was yellow. I have the blue one given to me by an old friend.
That is a very thorough safety inspection---done the way it should be done. North Carolina claims to have such an inspection, but I doubt it. With all of the cars that I have owned, never once have they questioned a thing. I find those odds highly unlikely. We pay $30 for the inspection. We did away with the stickers last year. You get your inspection before you go in for your new tags. The inspection is automatically logged into the DMV license tag sight. No inspection; no new tags. They claimed that this new method saved a ton of money. For once, they may be correct.
Oh, they never looked for a spare. Ever. Or check wiper blade condition.
anyway, they kept the emissions part, but you still have to go to the inspection station and drive through. Does not go any quicker. All they did was eliminate about 1 minute of the process, so it is hard to see how they are saving anything significant.
not that big a deal really. Many states don't do an inspection, and it is up to the police to notice broken/out lights, etc. and stop/ticket people.
not sure if anyone cares about brakes or bald tires though!
I'm looking for the SECOND grade primer from that year.
Oh, sorry. Just to be clear, is the one you are looking for the 1952 "New More Friends and Neighbors" book, which is the 2nd grade second half primer from this list? It was yellow I believe.
Three years ago NJ flunked me on worn wiper - one of the very few times I ever flunked. now they wouldn't even look.
Last week my daughter got pulled over for a burned out headlight. Unfortunately it also had a burned out registration! Someone in the house got the mail in the day that registration notice came in and I plain forgot. The cop was nice enough to her. Didn't write her for anything - but they did tow the car....

They towed the car for expired registration? Seems extreme.

Here in IL they do not inspect cars. But cars registered in urban areas do have to get emmissions checked every two years. Its free and if you don't have to wait in line takes a minute or two.
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
that must have been a wiper blade hanging off or something. I never saw them pull up a wiper arm to really look at the condition, but then again, I never had a car with wipers that bad!
actually, in NJ, for newer (OBDII) cars (1998+?) they don't actually check emissions either. They just plug in a scanner, and if there are no codes stored, you are good to go.
For older cars, they still stick a sniffer up the tailpipe.
I am still miffed that in 2004, when I bought my 2001 Miata, they failed it for emissions because the test facility did not have the correct connector, so since they couldn't check the codes, they flunked it!
just saw an item that nearly one in five homes in Florida are empty! We just have to find the right ones and move around......
Holy! This year and last year I have seen people with sandwich boards standing on traffic islands...their signs say home for sale etc etc.
Maybe we should just go down next year and occupy one of those empty homes....squatters rights or something.
I will say, in this particular survey there are 75 units, only 1 to 3 are for sale at any one time.
We want a place to stay where we will be part of a community, so it doesn't matter if only 1 home in 20 is occupied. I get the feeling most of the people in this community are owned by seniors who have a stake in their home.....I hope!
Good luck Driver, hope you get it !! Nice back yard !!
Thanks houdini! That is actually the common area pool, not our backyard. But, that is much better...it will be a meeting place and it is better if the complex looks after it.
Our bid is for under $100k, so these are incredible buys. At home, a house like that would probably sell for 4X that amount.
Thats what they do here in IL, just plug the car into their computer and read codes. But they do have the ability to sniff the exhaust on older cars or cars they cannot hook up.
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
I knew the wiper needed replacement but it looked outwardly fine. I think the guy flunked it because Parsons, the outfit that runs the inspection stations, gets paid every time someone drives up - whether for full inspection or just for one corrected item. Like so much else it is a scam.
Seeing all that Dick and Jane stuff I see they had the little sister as well. Her name was Sally. When she is Catholic, like Spot is, she gets named Judy.

Believe it or not PA at one time had 2 state inspections per year. It has to be over 20 years since they changed the law requiring only 1. I guess the dealers/garages lobbyists lost that battle. So I’ve lived with real PITA state inspections all my life except for 4 years in SC.
When I moved to SC in ’92 I had plenty of friends from the Burgh area that lived just across the border in the Augusta GA suburb areas and they liked the idea of no state inspections in GA. But, I moved to SC and they had state inspection for the first year I was there. After getting my cars registered I went to a gas station/garage that was an authorized state inspection place just like in PA.
The inspection went like this:
I pulled up in front of this old time gas station which had a big plate glass window and I went inside and said I wanted a state inspection. The guy at the desk said to go out to my car and turn on the lights then when he raised his arm I was to put on my high beams. Nothing else, not even turn signals. After I put on the high beams, he waved to me to come in. I thought I had a burned out light. Nope, he said, “OK, you passed”. Being from PA, I said, “HUH”? and he repeated that I passed. Paid about $15, he put a sticker on the car and I was on my way
Since that was such a farce, SC did away with state inspections in ’93. I’m pretty sure that was the year.

My fiancee's car was registered in Ohio before she moved to PA, and they had no state inspection but did have a required emissions check (e-check) every 2 years. You knew you were due because you weren't able to get your updated registration until it passed.
I like that approach better, compared to Pennsylvania's yearly state inspection and emissions program. It usually isn't cheap, either.

No, but that is a great web site for old books. The one that I want is "More Fun With Dick and Jane" in the yellow hard back...1951 or 1952. Thanks again for doing that research.
BTW, do you live near Woodbury? If so, have you heard of Millhouse Antiques and Gardens?
Seeing all that Dick and Jane stuff I see they had the little sister as well. Her name was Sally. When she is Catholic, like Spot is, she gets named Judy
If Spot became Catholic how come he didn't get a different name?
BTW, do you live near Woodbury? If so, have you heard of Millhouse Antiques and Gardens?
Woodbury is about 50 miles from me. I live in the Hartford area. Have not heard of Millhouse Antiques, but I'm not really into antiques. My furniture was mostly bought 40 some years ago, so it's antique to me.
Thanks for the offer. My furniture came from an company who's major attraction was the ability to add matching pieces from the same collection thru the years. My parents bought the same brand starting in the 40's, and taught me the value of paying a little extra for casegoods. The stuff lasts forever, is classic to my eyes, and still looks new.
Fortunately, my needs declined about the time the company switched to newer "collections" that no longer have the same appeal. Although I could use a nice couch that is scratch proof (thank you, kitty cat). Maybe she has a recommendation? :shades:
Naw, she's a sweetheart, except for her perverse attraction to the couch, and her shedding, and occasional upchucking, and her refusal to let anyone trim her hair or nails, or....hmmm.
Oh well, I was thinking about something made of ballistic cloth, or kevlar, or maybe carbon fiber..... :P Darn, I wish they would fix the emotorcons...
>, she's a sweetheart, except for her perverse attraction to the couch, and her shedding, and occasional upchucking, and her refusal to let anyone trim her hair or nails, or....hmmm.
Why does her name get changed to Judy? Is Sally some sort of demonic name?
Richard
I've never been able to figure that out. They changed the names of all the kids but left Spot and Puff with their names. Instead of Dick, Jane and Sally you had John, Jean and Judy. Don't know why they felt it necessary to have all the kids' names start with the same letter.

I love dogs, and have had many through the years. But they don't really fit in now, as I live alone and am prone to taking day trips (or several), and a dog needs more attention. Besides, this cat was a gift from my daughter 13 plus years ago.
And to keep this auto related, she absolutely hates to ride in the car, doesn't matter what make or model. This is the infamous Hershey......
We did once have a kitten who was great. Liked to hang out in the glove compartment (with the door open). Happy as the proverbial clam. He abandoned us for a neighbor. Finally popped by our house again with a new collar. We put one of our own on him and in short order he disappeared only to show up again with yet another collar. We told him if that's the way he felt go live with the neighbor and we got another cat. The new cat was a female. In short order our former cat got our then current cat pregnant.

"tongue in cheek"....but still a great home for under $100K.
I thought that was possible, but just in case, I didn't want to give the wrong impression....mainly that we would have an olympic size pool in our backyard.
Just read today in the ritzy Naples area 1 out of 3 homes are vacant! And, almost half the homes in Florida have mortgages that are larger than the value of the house. We are supposed to know if we won the bidding lottery Friday or Monday....if we win great, but if not prices might drop a bit more, so it is up to fate now.
In short order our former cat got our then current cat pregnant.
Out of curiosity, how did you know your former cat was the daddy? Maybe he is the alleged father, he is innocent until proven guilty. Was his name "Clinton"?
I am in Atlanta from today until Saturday. We took a taxi to the hotel....$55 but that you can't help. What I do hate are taxis that are vans. I try to work it so we end up in a sedan...in most city's a Ford Crown Vic, probably because they are pretty strong and fairly cheap to repair.
But, I hate vans. You step in, you have to put down armrests to slide across, door is usually on one side, the windows are small, seating is awkward.....and they aren't that safe with those thin steel sides.
What ever happened to Checker Taxi Cabs? There is probably a market for a good well made taxi.
Easy, go there and talk to the sales staff, tell them that you will pay their Edmunds dues for them if they come here and disrupt this forum about shaving, Dick and Jane books, furniture and other things with off topic car sales stories.

"Although I could use a nice couch that is scratch proof..."
I can recommend a very good sofa to solve your kitty problems. Buy a Herculon fabric sofa (also known as Olefin fabric). Sofas made of this material are practically indestructible. The fibers are very tightly woven with a super strong backing. Ink, blood, vomit, coffee, tea, etc. wipes off with a damp soapy rag. You can stab it, chew it (pets), pull at the fibers, twist it, etc. and it won't change a bit. Sofas made with this fabric were very popular in the mid-80's, but are still manufactured today. They work extremely well in rented beach and mountain cottages where you have a variety of adults and children using the sofas. Most of the sofas come in a plaid colored design...blue and tan plaid, red and green plaid, green and white plaid, brown and tan plaid, etc.
I think that J.C. Penney's still makes those sofas, as well as a few other large retailers. The prices are pretty moderate for these sofas. With a little research, I believe that you could find one. One word of caution: The fabric feels a little scratchy, but your cat will love it. You can put a sheet or blanket over it if you want to take a nap on it yourself. Visitors who sit on it won't notice that small disqualifying feature.
Compared to the usual $2k or $3k sofa, you should be able to get one for $1K or less. Don't dare purchase a used one unless you have it professionally cleaned. That fabric can hold some real soil and germs if it isn't cleaned ever so often. Still, it holds up to most any treatment.
Don't you know an actual couple with a herd of kids, all with names starting with the same letter?
Absolutely! Of course my parents named four out of five boys with anmes that began with J. I was the odd duck. I was the second kid. Now they had their logical reasons to a point. My older brother was named for my dad and the twins after me for grandfathers. That doesn't explain the last one and you;d figure they could see they were setting up an odd duck situation but no.....
