I still want my "Dick and Jane" book with the original yellow cover! I've given you over a year and you stil haven't produced. (Cry)
You are right! I have to start working on that again. When I checked a year ago I couldn't find the one you wanted....not to mention even most of those were going to cost a few $100.
I think it had to be Dick and Jane and yellow, but it also had to include Spot.
fezo (Mar 22, 2011 5:42 pm) You and Sandman amaze me. You're both so strong in dealing with the cards that you have been dealt. My troubles pale by comparison when I think of you two. You're both an inspiration to others.
I was going to comment on you two guys too, but Richard said it for me. So, I'll 2nd that!
Mine was an on the job injury back in April of 2005 and yes, it did change our lives dramatically.
About 5 years a go Mrs. j was getting tired of putting up with the pain in her back. She said it started from lugging the 2 boys around like all mothers do. It used to be an on and off thing but by then it was pretty much steady on. I’m sure yours is much worse from how you describe your condition. Anyway, she was about to undergo the typical disc surgery but she talked to a doctor friend of ours who recommended a doctor that she should go see before getting the surgery. I believe this doctor was a neurologist and he put her on a regimen of steroids for a short time (that’s all I had to hear, her on steroids, yikes ). Thankfully it worked and she is as good as new.
Have you seen a doctor who has thought of this? I’m sure you have probably seen them all by now but it might be worth a shot.
You and ‘fez’ are the toughest guys on this forum, don’t give up.
Good luck.

If the pain is caused by inflammation, and loads of pain is, steroids do wonders. You can't use them really long term unless there is no alternative because they have loads of side effects (in my case they make me grouchy and I eat anything in sight! - I've had to be on them for the toxoplasmosis in my eyes and when the arthritis was a bigger issue than it is now).

Simpler times. God, I'm getting old, but I guess it's all relative.
When we went to Lost Wages Las Vegas last year we took a trip to the Grand Canyon. We decided not to take the interstate and took Rt 66 out of Kingman AZ. They had Burman Shave signs on Rt 66 in three places. My wife got a big kick out of that, didn't have those where she is from.
An hour drive south of me oh IL State highway 53 (Rt 66) There used to be one, I need to go down that way to see if it is still there.

I was going to have my snow tires changed to summer tires at the end of February...it almost never snows here in March.
Really? Aren't you in Canada? Here in Chicago we can get several inches of snow as late as early April. I have actually seen it snow in June, but just snow mixed with rain nothing on the ground.
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
That's really too early.... You don't have to worry about just snow, but near freezing temperatures, as well...
You do live in Canada, right?
Yes, near Toronto. We don't get snow too often in April. Most years we get maybe 3 or 4 real snowfalls. Last year we had our driveway plowed twice, this year 12 times.
I don't want to be driving around with the top down....with snow tires still on.
Here in Chicago we can get several inches of snow as late as early April. I have actually seen it snow in June,
I actually think Chicago gets more snow than we do......because you are on the windy side of the lake....similar to Buffalo near us. Sometimes we get a little snow and Buffalo can be closed down.
In a way, I don't mind having snows on longer...it helps save the regular tires so they will last longer.
Sandman....so sorry to hear of your trials....both physically and mentally. I know it's tough to vent your frustrations in a public forum, so they must be very troubling for you. All I can offer is....tomorrow's a new day. And, no single person can make you miserable unless you allow them to. Hang in there.
My son said he had someone approach him in while he was gassing up the Accord the other day. My son had just washed and waxed it, so it did look good. The guy was older (although I tried to get my son qualify what the term "older" meant to him with no success). He said the guy was looking for a leather, 4 cyl, automatic, Nav Accord and they were tough to come by. I find that difficult to believe.
In any event, the guy gave him a business card to follow up with if we (me) decided to sell it.
If it was a classic car, or a rare car, I'd understand someone's interest. But, a 3 year old Accord? Go figure!
Here's my problem. This is why I gave up last time and thought if I waited I would try again. Spot doesn't appear in the title (maybe dogs weren't as important in the 40s and 50s) and although he is shown on the cover on some titles...they are blue. If you go to abebooks.com and write in Dick and Jane under the title you will get over 20 pages of newer reprinted editions from about $1 to $5, plus $6 shipping. I'll be glad to buy one for you and send it to you if you tell me which one you like.
If you want an original printed in the 40s or 50s you go to the advanced search and put in the years min 1940 to 1960 edition. You will get 2 pages of books, from $40 to $640!!!!! Here is the link to the Dick and Jane pages: Dick and Jane Here is a nice yellow one for $1 and $6 shipping;

Just an update on the Florida Villa Condo. For one week it is offered to people who could buy it with assistance from public housing. For another week it is offered to residents who are renting. Then it goes on the market.
After 3 weeks the bank says they have several bids....you have until Friday to increase your bid. These guys aren't dumb, they are trickier than car sales people (just joking isell).
I think they know, after waiting 3 weeks you are getting more excited and are already making plans to buy it. So, we increased our bid substantially but it could be a waste of time and money,....who knows what the other bids are or the conditions.
At first I was going to take our chances, but I think it is the best unit for us...it is in a good location, has big windows where we want them to let in the light, and it is the best floor plan. No appliances or furniture is probably better because we can buy what we want. Replacing all the closet doors is a hassle, I think they were mirror doors so they took them. B-----ds!
In NJ you can have burned out headlights, no wipers, no spare and a flat tire and as long as you pass the emissions test they will pass you. This just started this year. Used to be it was a safety inspection. Then they added the emissions. Now they've removed the safety part. Idiots.
We didn't get Dick and Jane books in Catholic school. We had the same books but the kids were John and Jean and they had a little sister named Judy. The dog was still named Spot (I guess the dog was Catholic) and the cat was Puff.

I do see your dilemma. I want the 1952 edition "Fun With Dick and Jane" with the yellow cover in hardback. I thought that I had found it, but it was the Catholic edition where they changed the names of the children. Don't know why they did that. Keep looking. There's one out there some where. Thanks for trying.
Richard, I've been watching for the "Fun With Dick and Jane" book, and saw one at a tag sale recently, but it was blue, not yellow. It looked like this one:
I had no idea there were so many different books and editions out there, going back to the '30s. I remember reading these books in grammer school, but would have been in the first grade in the late 40's, and can't remember what color they were. Hope you find what you're looking for.
I am two hours - maybe 90 miles as the crow flies - from where I grew up. Today here we have rain. Where I grew up there's half a foot of snow and more coming!

I agree. Safety should be the number one priority.
PA has a real safety inspection. Brakes, lights, exhaust system integrity, body integrity, glass, emission, TIRES, seat covers, you name it, they check it.
The inspection for Mrs. j’s 05’ XG350 is due by the end of this month so I did a pre-check on it on Saturday and although the rear brakes were still OK, I decided to change them anyway to avoid any problems when she would be taking it in for inspection on Tuesday (yesterday). The car has 40,238 miles on it. It turns out that it needed TIRES. I wondered about this when I did the pre-check because they were almost at the wear indicator bar but I figured I’ll get the car inspected now then get tires in a week or two. It turns out this wear indicator is up for interpretation. Some garages say if it isn’t down to the wear indicator it’s OK. Others say if it looks like you don’t have 5K miles left, they should be replaced now. The garage I go to says NOW.
As I write this post she is having tires put on, then she will go back to the inspection garage for the stickers (one for the safety inspection and one for the emission inspection). This car will not need an emission inspection because, in PA if you have less than 5k miles since your last inspection, you are exempt. This car will have about 4875 miles on it since the last inspection so I’m exempt (save about $25) but I have to pay $12 (I think) for the emission exempt sticker. They get you one way or another, it’s just a matter of how much.
I have a tale about the replacement tires that wore out prematurely but I’ll tell about that latter when I cool down.

That's the sort of inspection we had until a few months ago. When I first bought the Celica a few years ago it flunked for worn wiper blades. They don't even look at that anymore.
