Driver, what's a 'truthy'? I haven't heard that one before.
Actually, the term doesn't seem to be used generally and it was hard to find a real definition. I have heard people who say things like; *The astronauts didn't really land on the moon - it was all video taped, or *The twin towers were destroyed by the U.S. government, and buildings don't really fall the way they did unless explosives are used, *The government controls all the media and you only hear what they want you to, *during the G20 conference in Toronto there were police cars that were set on fire, the truthy's would say the police did that themselves to give them more power.
It took awhile to get a definition. But, I heard the term used on radio and TV when they interviewed some of these (and I use the term loosely) people. They referred to themselves as truthers or truthys.
I am glad there aren't any on this site, but I don't think they would buy their own cars. They don't trust big corporations and they don't like to actually pay for stuff. They seem to like to get government handouts, and feel that is alright. From what I have read they seem to think the system is rigged against them and that is why they can't get ahead. The people I see on the site are the exact opposite of that.
Hope that helps and I have no idea why a term that has been used often doesn't have a meaning printed.
I did find this one, which isn't the best but may help, What does "Truthy" mean? A truthy meme relies on deceptive tactics to represent misinformation as fact. The Truthy system uses 'truthy' (a term coined by Stephen Colbert) to refer to activities such as political smear campaigns, astroturfing, and other social pollution.
I know, I am replying to myself...but this book might explain more.
The book is written by a Canadian and is number 4656 in the ranking on amazon.ca and gets 4 out of 5 stars. It is National Post jounalist Jonathan Kay. Here is part of a review that explains what the book is about:
Millions of people around the world have convinced themselves that the actual perpetrators of 9/11 were not al-Qaeda terrorists but elements within the U.S. government seeking a pretext to launch wars abroad and enact draconian laws at home. These "9/11 Truthers" are not alone. They are part of a vast conspiracist subculture that is spreading like wildfire and beginning to influence mainstream politics.
You'd think with all the books he's been involved with he'd have read a couple of the words in few of them at least.
I have no idea what has happened to my spelling. In public school spelling was probably my best subject. When I was in teachers college they taught us to not make a big deal out of spelling, it made the kids lose their creativity.
Let them write the story without losing marks for spelling errors....it isn't a big deal. So, maybe that is when I decided that spelling just isn't that important, as long as I can communicate my thoughts.
I could use spell check but I don't want to lose all these genius thoughts.
That's OK....as we get older we start mixing up names like Mac24 and Driver. It could happen to any one.
But, since you are talking about me...yes, I feel very fortunate. Someone has to be looking out for me, getting canned from 3 jobs in a row (I like to say fired, sounds more dramatic) and then starting a company that literally went from 0 (zero - goose egg) to a few $million in sales in a year.
There was hard work and risk taking, and my wife helping, and a lot of luck and devine intervention. We could have just tried to live on my unemployment checks, but we invested that money into stock and display units.
The publishing industry pays poorly, so I didn't have any real money until about 10 years ago. I am glad it worked out this way...if money comes too early and too easy....you waste it away very quickly.
I have no idea what has happened to my spelling. In public school spelling was probably my best subject. When I was in teachers college they taught us to not make a big deal out of spelling, it made the kids lose their creativity.
I also was an excellent speller in grade school. I know that has to be impossible for anyone here to believe but even I could memorize 20/25 words for the test on Friday. It was the final with a hundred words or more that gave me a problem. While I didn’t get perfect scores on the final, I still easily got an A. Again, I’d have a hard time proving that.
Now take grammar (I wish you could) that was a problem for me and diagramming sentences damn near caused me to repeat 5 th grade.
FWIW, I lobbed up a soft one for you in post 68250 by purposely misspelling a word but you missed it or chose not to point it out. Just goes to prove that the content is more important than the spelling, to a point. I’m sure Richard’s school system wasn’t as lax with spelling as your school system was. Mine wasn’t either.

Hi again all- Thanks for the warm welcome- it's much appreciated. I know leasing is usually a loss v. buying- but my wife had to leave her job in order to complete her masters in education- so we're down a salary at this time- so low monthly payment was our big concern. We wanted to keep our cash reserves up also since we won't be able to save much right now on 1 paycheck and with the little one one the way- altough we are lucky to have good savings and big chunk of equity in our house- despite buying in 2006; we also live rather frugally- or as best we can still going to dinner every other week.
The whole "deal" including the test drive was probably 2 hrs start to finish. The prep took almost another 2....We drove the camry there- my wife drove it home while I drove the CRV.
To touch on some of the topics since my post- We're invested mostly in stock mutual funds as we're early 30's- but have a good chunk of high yield/intl bond funds as well- a few indicidual stocks too- but they can be so hit or miss- if you've got the time and discipline it can really pay off though-just keep in mind you're up against the big boys (Goldman, Morgan Stanley, hedge funds) when trading individual stocks, otherwise a good vanguard/t rowe price fund is they way to go....
Dishwasher detergent- we go with what's at costco- usually the cascade packets- they seem to work pretty well for us- altough maybe its the dishwasher too?
As for baby furntiure we are fortunate that our parents are picking up the tab for the big ticket items- stroller, crib, bookcase, and dresser- altough the nursery renovations are killing me- new window, floors, paint, etc...Apparently you can't put college tuition on a baby registry.
It's extremely difficult to find furntiure not made in China- probably 90% or more is made there- some companies are pretty deceptive in the naming, etc to make it appear that the stuff is made in europe/us - most of the US made stuff is quite good- but $$$$- we found a good brand- south american pine (chile) - assembled in the US....
In case anyone here is interested,if you have a child on the way or know someone who does, a great recommendation made to me was the book "Baby Bargains" -extremely helpful in weeding out overpriced items not needed for the nursery- also helpful in going over how to avoid Chinese made items, or how to find US made ones.
in post 68250 by purposely misspelling a word but you missed it or chose not to point it out.
I think I probably saw the mistake, but there are so many of them (even Richard made one recently) lately that they aren't worth mentioning. I make a lot of them because I am on a laptop and the keys aren't that big.
I think the word you mispelled was "own successful businees is ".
I know what you mean about grammar, that is a difficult one, but, you seem to be able to communicate very well. At least I usually understand you.
"...diagramming sentences damn near caused me to repeat 5th grade."
I'm surprised to hear that from you. Most technically minded students enjoy breaking down the sentence into its parts. Personally, I never cared for the practice. When I taught English, i never required it unless the students were having difficulty with something like compound-complex sentences.
As for spelling, the emphasis is no longer placed on it in grade school or high school. The thought now is that students will learn how to spell correctly from their reading and writing. I don't agree with that stream of thought, but that's the current philosophy. The old spelling book was a valuable tool. I think that is why today we see "your" being used for "you're", among other examples. Students hear the sound but they don't know the rules. The old speller taught the rules. One of the problems with education is that those in charge don't remember that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Dishwasher detergent- we go with what's at costco- usually the cascade packets-
Ah, dishwasher detergent...my favorite topic. I meant to tell every one and especially Richard I did some research about the Cascade Complete powder that forms film and leaves a scuzzy surface on everything it comes into contact with (I know we covered prepositions at the end of a sentence and I think that one is ok).
There were lots of complaints on line. I called P&G but they said they would have helped me if I had called right away....whatever that means, what's the difference when I tell them about it.
Any way, I checked Consumers Report and Richard was right again, they rated Cascade Liquid and Gel as the number one dishwasher detergent. Even though it is the best, I won't buy any P&G product unless I have no choice.
Don't confuse grammar with punctuation. You grammar is very good, but you often use commas where you need a period. I really don't comment much any longer regarding mistakes in the posts. There are times when I have to read a post a second time to completely understand it, but most posters communicate very well. Most people probalby wouldn't notice it, but nyccguy has a really untique style of writing. As an English teacher, I can tell that he learned quite a bit from his English instructors. It's not the words that he chooses; it's how he puts them together. Just when I think that he is about to make an error, he doesn't. I keep reading his posts just to look for errors. If I found one, I probably wouldn't even mention it. It's just my fun thing to do.
As for Fezo, I wouldn't know if he made an error. His content is what cracks me up at times. :P
"...on everything it comes into contact with (I know that we covered prepositions at the end of a sentence and I think that one is ok).
LOL! You are so funny. No, that one is not "ok". Don't worry about it; so many people make that error. If you really want to fix it, it would go something like this: "...leaves a scuzzy surface on everything with which it comes into contact." Another option: "... leaves a scuzzy surface on everything it contacts." An even easier option: "... leaves a scuzzy surface on everything."
As for the Cascade, it's not the liquid or gel that has given us success; it's the tablets along with the rinse agent called Cascade Clear.
I think that it is wonderful that you and your wife are willing to make the temporary sacrifice for her to receive her masters in education. You won't regret it. Now is the right time---before she and the baby become older. Great decision.
I'm also glad to see that you are avoiding the baby furniture made in China. That is a very wise decision. We have friends who just purchased a $700 crib for their first grandchild. Though expensive, it was made in the U.S. and will also serve as a changing table. Later, it can convert into a child's bed. They also figured that it could be used for a second or third baby if the time arrives.
Best wishes with all of your "projects". It's fun to be young and plan all of these exciting things.
"...leaves a scuzzy surface on everything with which it comes into contact.
Tablets got a 1st as well along with Cascade Clear (with Dawn I believe), they were all the best product you could buy, though others were close.
Thanks for the comments about the grammar and language. I hope NYC tells us how he became so eloquent. Maybe Fezo will tell us how he became such an expert at semi-colons.
Even I know it should be "butt"....ha ha, had to do it.
I was listening to a talk radio show and some guy came on and started talking about how we don't know if there are people who are walking around who have been radiated, working in a nuclear plant in Canada.
The announcer (Jerry Agar formerly in Chicago) just cut him off and said, "I have been doing talk radio for over 12 years and there's one thing I have learned, you can't have a conversation with a truthy (conspiracy theorist)".
Even I know it should be "butt"..... I was using the Canadian spelling.
Nice try, but it won't work this time. From the free Canadian online dictionary; (See Fezo, I can use them too).
4. butt - the fleshy part of the human body that you sit on; "he deserves a good kick in the butt"; "are you going to sit on your fanny and do nothing?" [non-permissible content removed], [non-permissible content removed], behind, buns, buttocks, derriere, fanny, hind end, hindquarters, keister, nates, posterior, prat, rear end, tooshie, tush, seat, fundament, backside, bottom, stern, rump, tail end, tail, rear, bum, can Cdn Dictionary/butt
On Sunday we drove 2 and 1/2 hours to Sarnia and back again, 5 hours on one tank of gas. The 2008 3 Series Cabriolet got 31 mpg.which I think is really good. In the city it gets 24 mpg. Not a big deal, but it's nice to get performance with reasonable economy...that is using premium gas though.
WE started thinking about maybe getting cars in the fall when the 4 years bumper to bumper is up. My wife likes her 2008 335....doesn't think she would like anything better. She thinks she would get an extended warranty...but, I am not so sure, I don't think she will keep it for 3 more years.
I think I would like to keep the convertible. If we get a place in Florida I might want a larger car so we can take more with us. That might mean a 5 Series (but they don't have manual transmissions) and I don't like the dull colors they come in. I would also consider an Audi, 4 cylinder with a turbo, and they seem to be larger.
We were going to go and look yesterday - it was a holiday here and I like taking a preliminary look when sales people aren't around - but it clouded over and rained.
Decisions, decisions. On the other hand, there is something nice about keeping acar in good condition and driving it for 10 years....and even though I only have the top down on about 25 days during the year, it sure is a nice feeling to be able to do that.
"...diagramming sentences damn near caused me to repeat 5th grade."

Well, this was back in the days when I could tear things apart but getting them back together without left over parts was the problem. Like the day I took my Fathers 17 jewel Bulova watch apart to see what the jewels looked like. Man, it’s only through the graces of the car gods that I am here today to tell about that one.

You know that I have to ask you this question. Did you get the watch back together, or was a jewelry store involved in the process? I bet your dad flipped out on that one.
This reminds me of an experience with my dad. I took his '56 red and white Ford Crown Victoria with Interceptor engine out for a spin. I drove to the lake where all of my friends gathered for a swim on a Sunday afternoon. Showing off and not paying attention, I accidently drove the front end into the lake. Naturally, I got stuck. A friend had a truck and a rope. In an attempt to pull the car out of the mud, the rear bumper came off onto the ground. There was nothing to do but call Dad who sent for a wrecker. He rode to the lake with the driver. It is probably better if I don't relate the remainder of the story.
I was only 5 miles from home and all thoughts were on the little blonde beside me. Parked in front of her house all cozy waiting for the submarine races.
Pulling out I heard a scratching sound. It was the side hitting the fire hydrant.
Dad never asked if the "parking session" went well. He wanted to know why I chose to park in front of the hydrant. 1 year old Buick LeSabre to stay on track.
"If we get a place in Florida, I might want a larger car..."
If you're going to fit in properly in Florida, you need to think about a Grand Marquis or a Town Car. :P Actually, now is the time for you to have that chance to test drive both.
Seriously, think about the SRX or that MB suv that you were so anxious for me to try. Both of these would give you more room for the trips to Florida.
Like the day I took my Fathers 17 jewel Bulova watch apart to see what the jewels looked like.
This is exactly why guys need a place to talk. A woman's reaction to that sentence would be "Why on earth did you do that?" As a guy I am obligated to ask what did the jewels look like?

The watch was a goner. If you ever took a look inside a mechanical watch, you would see a few springs. The springs, or at last one of them, popped loose due to my tinkering with a screwdriver. Trying to put it back in place I messed up everything and the jeweler said, “this watch isn’t worth fixing. Even the gears and case are shot”. The watch had some sentimental value which I can’t remember now. So that’s when my Father “flipped out” as you put it. Although I seem to remember it being a whole lot worse than that.
Showing off and not paying attention, I accidently drove the front end into the lake. Naturally, I got stuck.
You did one better than my watch thing. If I had done that my license would have gone in the lake too and my driving days would have been over.

That is totally unfair! I use it frequently; however, I admit that I often avoid using semi-colons in colloquial conversation to avoid feeling like I'm trying to be pretentious.

Glad you mentioned that. My wife looked it up on line and couldn't find a any info on a 5 Series with a 6 speed. But, I will definitely look ito it. It might not be available in Canada though but I will find out.
........however, I admit that I often avoid using semi-colons in colloquial conversation to avoid feeling like I'm trying to be pretentious.
Although it may cause you to feel that way, I very much doubt it's perceived as such.
Even in the casual and informal conversations we have on the Edmunds forums, there isn't any reason to neglect correct punctuation. In fact I think it's at least as important as in formal writing. For instance, when I write 'isn't' it's because that's what I mean you to hear, because that's what I'd say if I were speaking to you, rather than 'is not'.
I could have used fewer commas in that sentence, but the pauses that they indicate replicate the pauses I'd make if I were saying it.
A correctly punctuated colloquial post allows me to hear the writer speak as I read it, which is a lot more satisfying than just understanding the meaning of the words.
If you're going to fit in properly in Florida, you need to think about a Grand Marquis or a Town Car. Actually, now is the time for you to have that chance to test drive both.
That did go through my mind too....I don't know if it is fair to test drive a Grand Marquis if the chances are slim I would actually buy it. I have nothing against them, but it would be too much of a shock to my system to actually drive one. I know my wife would refuse to be in it....she lived in England for a few years and only likes European cars. She wouldn't drive it...she would say it is way to big. And she would be laughing at me as I back it in to the garage with our curved driveway - if I go in front first, you wouldn't be able to manouvre out to the road again. The Town Car would be even worse, and I would feel like a chauffeur driving it.....it would be the opposite of feel of the road. But, I might justify it just to say I could love it, so I am entitled to give it a try. What if I liked it though? I guess I would feel about 98 years old driving it.
I like Cadillacs and with the European handling she might go for that, but I think it would be hard to go back to American cars, and if anything went wrong I will get an "I told you so" for many years to come. I hate to say it but she has got good judgement about these things.
If I go for a larger car I would definitely want to try the GLK Mercedes. It's the right size, has AWD, and has nice square lines. Looks good in white or black. I doubt if the GLK has standard transmission.
I don't think anything will happen, but I don't usually keep cars for 4 years, but the last 4 years has flown by.
When I write 'isn't' it's because that's what I mean you to hear, because that's what I'd say if I were speaking to you, rather than 'is not'.
Sometimes I’ve been accused of writing like I talk. I remember once, one of the young technical writers that we have around here, who was not in the loop to review one of my masterpiece responses to a technical problem, but somehow did see it, said to one of the higher ups something like, “are we going to go out on the street with this write-up like this”? The response was, pretty funny really, because I was informed that she was told, “Don’t worry about it. He’s written like this before. He knows his audience and they expect him to write like he does. He doesn’t mince words. While someone might not like his response we won’t get many questions as to what he said”.

As for Fezo, I wouldn't know if he made an error. His content is what cracks me up at times. :P
Richard
Of course I am one of only two posters who ever use a semicolon; you would be the other.

Please don't do that with mine. It would probably bring back memories of your worst students! :shades:

I'm also glad to see that you are avoiding the baby furniture made in China. That is a very wise decision. We have friends who just purchased a $700 crib for their first grandchild. Though expensive, it was made in the U.S. and will also serve as a changing table. Later, it can convert into a child's bed. They also figured that it could be used for a second or third baby if the time arrives.
Best wishes with all of your "projects". It's fun to be young and plan all of these exciting things.

That is the best shifter since the 1970 Dodge Charger Pistol Grip.

Well, this was back in the days when I could tear things apart but getting them back together without left over parts was the problem. Like the day I took my Fathers 17 jewel Bulova watch apart to see what the jewels looked like. Man, it’s only through the graces of the car gods that I am here today to tell about that one.

Richard
I was only 5 miles from home and all thoughts were on the little blonde beside me. Parked in front of her house all cozy waiting for the submarine races.
Pulling out I heard a scratching sound. It was the side hitting the fire hydrant.
Dad never asked if the "parking session" went well. He wanted to know why I chose to park in front of the hydrant. 1 year old Buick LeSabre to stay on track.

Richard

I seem to remember those were the words that my Mother used. My Father well, not quite like that.
As for the jewels, they looked like pieces of colored glass. Trying to dig one of those loose is probably what messed up the gears and the case. :surprise:

Glad you mentioned that. My wife looked it up on line and couldn't find a any info on a 5 Series with a 6 speed. But, I will definitely look ito it. It might not be available in Canada though but I will find out.

Tic and Mako...I can't find a 5 Series with a standard transmission on the Canadian web site. When we get more serious I will take a look and ask. I have a feeling they don't offer it here.......probably just not enough demand to make it worth their while.
