Assuming he's sticking with Ford, his shopping Expedition may have led him to change direction.

I don’t think that we can assume anything. He mentioned that he was looking into an Elantra for his mother and they didn’t have any left. That’s when he probably saw that he could get a knockout deal on a leftover Genny. Now I’m concerned that he bought a Genny and his handle will become Genny2011 (or some other derivative) and I’ll be thought of as a copy cat.

So help me…if he does this I hope his dues are jacked up out of sight; maybe even thrown out of here.

    "Richard is that your neighborhood?"

I'm no where near there. The movie was filmed in the western mountains of Georgia---quite a drive from North Carolina. I think that perhaps you are remembering my final hiking trip there about five years ago. It was then that I realized that my hiking days were done. It was a wonderful trip---beautiful country, fantastic weather, and a couple of good old friends with whom to enjoy it.

The boy's name in the movie was Lonnie (not his real name). He was the only native to be used in the movie. He wasn't retarded, just unusual looking. He was chosen from a bunch of elementary school children because of his looks. Like "The Graduate", "Rosemary's Baby", and other films of that era, "Deliverance" had a shocking and disturbing theme. The late '60's and early '70's produced several key films which exposed certain taboo topics into the main stream of society. Be it positive or negative, society changed and realized that people needed to talk about issues, though it wasn't always pleasant to do so. The rose colored world of the '50's was gone forever. Vietnam, Watergate, the drug culture, and the Beatles were some of the factors that changed all of that in America. Though I loved growing up in the '50's, nothing can ever stay the same. Have we traveled TOO far? IMHO, yes. Then again, mine is an old man's perspective. I still believe that ethics, moral values, tolerance, a religious foundation, and love of family and friends are all important aspects of a nation's success. I see much of that slipping away from us.

I apologize for getting on a soap box.

Not just a nation IMO, but just as applicable to a civilization.
Without exception, all previous civilizations have evolved in the same pattern; rise, peak, fall.
Here in the West I believe the peak was many years ago.
However, unlike some who fear the appearance of the Zombies (not in the literal sense) at any moment, I believe the process will continue to be slow and gradual, although still inevitable.

I don't worry about it though, any more than I worry about getting old (huh, I am old), it's just life.

that wasn't the case. The boy wasn't autistic nor could he play the banjo.

Yes, that's too bad because it made a great story while it lasted. Someone who was a movie buff knew all about it and got back to me as soon as I sent the story to friends. Guess I have to check everything out before sending it on.

I loved that story....well, at least it was fun to watch that scene again.

The rose colored world of the '50's was gone forever.

You are very knowledgeable about the scene from the movie. I think I once mentioned that I thought Mako lived in Deliverance territory because he lived in a remote area...but someone said you were actually closer. I could be wrong, it has happened a few times before.

I think your views on society are right on. They were talking the other day about the fall of civilization, when you get people who cheat, lie and steal and have no scruples or decsent values. People such as John Edwards, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bernie Madoff and many more. These people are driven by power and money and will do anything to obtain it.

What you wrote is sad, but true, no need to apologize.

Went to the BMW dealer and took a 535 out for a test drive. I was overwhelmed. This car has maximum comfort, even part of the seat that moves forward to give you more support for your legs.

It would take me 3 years to learn how the electronics work...settings for about 1000 radio stations. A big huge flat hood, and the instrument panel is pretty low so excellent vision.

Very comfortable seats. This would make a great highway cruiser, so comfortable and smooth. Steering is precise but so smooth and easy.

I don't think I can do it though....I just don't feel comfortable driving it, but I will consider it. I have lots of time to think about it and weigh my options...including doing nothing. Although, there could be tax advantages to buying before I fully retire.

Right now I am leaning toward another Cabriolet....3 Series hardtop convertible. But a 335 instead of a 328. I like white with a coral/red interior.

    I'll save a 535 until I am a little older.........

    "Damn! I hate Snopes!!"

You have some justification here. Snopes is not always correct, at least not to the letter. Snopes consists of a husband/wife team who possess a liberal leaning. While some things are clealry true or false, interpretation plays a part in others. It is also wise to check other sources as well.

. Snopes is not always correct, at least not to the letter.

Unfortunately, everything I can find having to do with this story says it is false.
The banjo playing kid's real name is Billy Redden who did live in the area. He is normal but had a look they wanted.

Here is a brief bit about him:
Thus, although it may be entertaining, this circulating story is pure fiction.

Billy Redden revisited his role as a banjo player with a cameo appearance in Tom Burton's 2003 film Big Fish. When Burton "rediscovered" him, Billy was working at the Cookie Jar Cafe in Clayton, Georgia. Billy has also appeared on Blue Collar TV and given numerous interviews. According to iMDB, Redden was payed $500 for his role in Deliverance.

    This article explains the scene in the movie very well, and explains the hoax;

    dueling banjos hoax

It is too bad people have to send around false stories. I don't quite understand how they get pleasure from doing that.

Most people don't really know it's false. They hear it from someone and not knowing anything different they believe it's true.

This is the first time I read that particular story and I have to ask anyone who believed it why they think a film crew would unpack the cameras and start fillimg stuff when they stop for gas?

Hope you are enjoying Hartford. Is there something of particular interst you are looking for? Like a big moose?

I tried to find info on Deliverance or banjo players on truth or fiction.com

They didn't have anything. Most of the advice they try to answer with is ads for products or to scare you into getting some kind of medical treatment.

I looked up "liberation treatment for MS" because I know someone who did that and it is a controversial subject. They just showed an ad with testimonials for a clinic. Not sure how useful that is, probably the site is run by left wing fanatics (just joking).

I just checked quickly....there is probably some good info there, I am not judging it, just reporting what I found so far.

I think Snopes is left leaning because they printed this question (for some reason you can't copy and paste on Snopes)
Did the former governor of Arkansas kill a dog?
    The answer is yes.
They wouldn't ask and report the answer unless they were left leaning liberals.

I have no idea about Snopes being "left leaning". However, they didn't post the question about the dog killing, it was taken from emails that were being sent around.

There was an email going around about "W" having the lowest IQ of any president in the last 50 years and they debunked that myth.

Another attributed goofy quotes to Sarah Palin and Snopes pointed out that those weren't true.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    I wasn't making a joke. I meant it.

I'm also getting tired of the Obama haters and ultra conservatives who bombard me with BS emails.

Everyone knows that I have no use for Obama and consider him to be a lousy President. He is, however, our President and to that, I support him and respect the office.

Given the weak choices the Republican Party has to offer, unless something dramatic changes, we will have him for another four years.

I will support thim during that time as well.

When you said it, I didn't know which side of the fence you were on. Your comment, could have been taken two ways (real or sarcastic).

I do agree with you that I get all kinds of vicious anti-Obama emails but very few, anti-Conservative emails. Not sure what that says.

I am also not sure about backing someone just because he is the president. I am not a fan of his, but it seems to me he inherited a mess which seems to be getting better. I am not sure that he understands the Middle East very well, but we will see.

I agree, stranger things have happened but that Deliverance scene wasn't one of them. It was a planned scene for the movie just as the link you provided said it was. A little bit of thought was all that was needed to know that.

Like 'snake' said a whole lot of movie making stuff doesn't just fall out of a truck and gets set up with all the audio and lighting necessary to catch an impromptu scene as perfectly as the one in the movie. Today you could try to it with a cell phone or camcorder but the quality wouldn't be movie grade.

You're right about film footage that was once thought to be out of the movie but upon editing was found to be good movie material but it had movie industry quality to make the final cut.

That Deliverance scene made for a good tale but so did the classic The Three Little Piggies. :)

I test drove the 535 on Friday. I don't know, it is almost too perfect. It rides so smooth, but still takes any corner at any speed and it stays level, no rolling.

The engine is smooth and powerful. Just sitting in it feels so good, lots of room, comfortable seats with lots of support, a big huge wide hood and low window line, and you just touch the gear shift to get it into forward or reverse.

That 1990 would have made a nice car, and only 100k miles....must have used it for a Sunday drive only.

stranger things have happened but that Deliverance scene

There have been lots of incidents in movies and TV shows that weren't planned, but were recorded and became part of the movie.

I am also amazed at how many songs became hits, just by accident. Remember the song Paul and Paula. They weren't really going together and their real names weren't Paul and Paula:

Ray Hildebrand was born in Joshua, Texas, and Jill Jackson in McCamey, Texas. Both were attending Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas in 1962 when a local disc jockey, Riney Jordan, asked listeners to come to the studio and sing their songs to help the American Cancer Society. The duo sang a song called "Hey Paula," which Hildebrand wrote, and were encouraged to make a record of it.

Shelby Singleton of Mercury Records eventually signed them, but not before changing their professional name (Singleton reasoned that a pair named Ray and Jill singing about "Hey, hey Paula" and "Hey, hey Paul" did not make sense). "Hey Paula" sold over two million copies globally, and was awarded a gold disc

And remember the instrumental The Stripper by David Rose:

Rose wrote this in the last 10 minutes of a recording session in 1958. He didn't have a name for it, and referred to it as "a funny piece of music with no title." Later that year, Rose was asked to re-record the song "Ebb Tide" to help promote the movie "Sweet Bird of Youth" (with Paul Newman and Geraldine Page), which he quickly did, but the movie studio needed a B-side for the single, so this song, which was an unnamed, unreleased cut, was pulled from the vaults, given a name ("The Stripper") and placed on the B-side of the "Ebb Tide" single.
