You are correct. The kids are too busy ordering around the parents and calling THEM names
Richard, this is too true. I'm a fairly young guy (32) and just can't believe the way some of the 13+ kids talk to their parents. I would have never gotten away with that!
When the time comes. I hope that I can teach my kid(s) respect so that they don't treat me or any other elder that way.
Well, it's about time that you showed up here. You can't expect me, driver, fezo and jmonroe to do all of the work. At least roadburner, houdini, and stickguy try to help. Keeping you, Isell, and jipster here is a tough job. Good to see you haven't fogotten your roots.
And there is no question that they build this into the prices of their cars so who is kidding who?
Thanks for getting back. People think they will get something (low rates) for nothing. You can't create money from nothing......somehow low interest rates are covered...built into the cost of the car.
NYC might have lost out a bit, because maybe Honda has a little extra cash on hand. But, I doubt it, probably just means the discounts won't be as big.
The more I think about it, my test drive in the BMW 5 Series makes me think, it was nice, but it is so smooth, so quiet, so comfortable.....it is just boring.
I might try it again just to see what I think on a 2nd try. I didn't like the fact the salesman came along for the ride. I have bought 3 cars there and my last salesman (who is off because of a serious heart attack) let us take cars out on our own, didn't even ask to make a copy of my licence.
I read this long term review that was on Edmunds. Although they praise the car for a lot of reasons...it seems to be the perfect car in every respect, this review confirmed my feelings exactly;
I've gotten to drive our 5 Series a few times and I gotta admit something: it's kinda boring.
I say that because now that I've driven our Porsche a few times, it reminds me that driving isn't just going from A to B, it's about having fun too. Sure our Porsche rattles squeaks and smells of gas from time to time, but I feel happy and alive when driving it. I don't need to be going fast or reckless to have fun, just hearing the engine and having the window open is reward enough.
Our 528i has soothing alert chimes, coddles you in comfortable seats and is so refined and quiet that it's just numb. Now I'm not saying the 528i is a bad car, it is a very nice car. But for me it's missing that spark that makes a car a joy to drive. Life is too short not to experience it even on the short trips to the supermarket.
Sure our Porsche rattles squeaks and smells of gas from time to time,
Well, if that is what you like just go buy yourself an old clunker, roll the windows down, make sure the shocks are shot so you get the feel of the road....stick that big sack of money you just saved under the seat and go have a blast !!

I was driving the bus the other day and I overheard a young teen girl tell her sports coach how when the principal had yelled at her for bad behavior, her parents had a judge issue a restraining order against him.
I tend to be a bit "outside of policy" when dealing with behavior problems on the bus. The other day a high school student was fooling around and thought it would be funny if he jumped in my lap. I told him that he ever did that again I would throw him out the door on his head. I had no more problems with him but for the rest of the day I worried that I would get fired for hurting his feelings.

Speaking of schools- Please anyone say a kind word or two to keep my off the ledge as my wife prepares to enter the realm of teaching in the worst enviornment in the last 80 years....she can't even apply to become a qualified substitue in NY or NJ at this point.....Hopefully Richard has some connections up north??
CRV is still like a dream so far- filled up for the first time- went with Shell- trying to stick to top tier gas at least initially....
I was driving the bus the other day and I overheard a young teen girl tell her sports coach how when the principal had yelled at her for bad behavior, her parents had a judge issue a restraining order against him.
That is so wrong. Stupid parents and stupid judge for granting the restraining order.
>Please anyone say a kind word or two to keep my off the ledge as my wife prepares to enter the realm of teaching in the worst enviornment in the last 80 years....she can't even apply to become a qualified substitue in NY or NJ at this point
I can't. Our son had mentioned that if he didn't reach one of his future goals he could always use his science and math background at OSU to teach. He nearly got kicked out the front door by my wife. In the environment of the republicans trying to manipulate society in certain states where they have majority, there's no way he's going to be disrespected by the state government the way they're doing in Ohio and others.
A son of a friend of ours, same age, is ending his freshman year at a major Ohio university. We give him the same advice. Even his grandmother, with whom my wife taught for years, is trying to encourage him to change direction.
We were subletting an apartment in Columbus for our son for the summer and the young lady working the office of a private but OSU-oriented housing group mentioned she was preparing to become a teacher. My wife made her feel really bad about the future in Ohio. (We've spent far too much time on Woody Hayes Drive lately--we should have been advising Tressel NOT to resign: other schools have done much, much worse and not been brought down.)
If you're headed toward college level teaching like my son had mentioned as well, there might be a difference. But the attitude and atmosphere in Ohio is rife with hatred all fomented by the republicans toward the public school teachers.
Maybe I'll bump into you when you come in the summer. I'll keep an eye out for a BMW
That would be great. But, I won't be driving a BMW. I'll have a rental car. Way too far to drive when you can fly...though some people think it is wimpy to fly when you can drive. (It would be like driving from Buffalo to San Francisco----not good, not even in a bimmer.
Well, if that is what you like just go buy yourself an old clunker, roll the windows down, make sure the shocks are shot so you get the feel of the road....stick that big sack of money you just saved under the seat and go have a blast !!
I think that would be fun. Especially a big old GM with lots of dents in. You never have to worry about where you park. What's another dent?
It would be like total freedom...no worries. But, freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.
Maybe the problem is cars that are too perfect are like little robot cars. That's boring, a car has to be a little tempermental and has to have some personality....being perfect isn't always best. Sometimes a crooked tooth adds character....a perfect smile can be boring.
Allow me to share a wonderful story with you about Joe Clark. When I was personnel director for our large school system, my secretary and I started each morning by going through the mail. We divided the mail into two stacks---one for teacher applications and one for administrative applications. One particular morning I was going through the principal applications because we had two openings at two of our high schools. There was a nice cover letter and resume from a lady by the name of Joan Levias. I glanced at her resume and noticed that she had been an assistant principal at Eastside High School in New Jersey. One of her three references was Joe Clark. I was so excited.
I called Joan and set up an interview immediately. She was moving back to North Carolina to be with her aged father. She came in the next day for the interview. What a delightful person with wonderful experience and knowledge! She gave me Joe Clark's private number to call as a reference. I called him the following morning. He was such a gracious and kind person over the telephone. We talked about Joan and educational issues for about 30 minutes. He had left education to become a writer and to do educational seminars.
Naturally, I offered Joan one of the positions that we had. Unfortunatley, she had to decline because our school system was over an hour's drive from her father's home. She took a position closer to him. I did have a chance to ask her about the movie. She and Joe were allowed to be present on the set for the filming. She told me that the movie was pretty close to the actual events. The director used their input to make it as accurate as possible. Joan stated that though she and Joe clashed at times, she had so much respect for him. Based on what Joe Clark told me, he felt the same way about her. As for me, it was a wonderful experience to meet her and talk with Joe Clark.
BTW, I wasn't a Joe Clark but, according to my superintendents, I did live on the edge with our school board. I never liked "kissing up" to people, and I was pretty bad about calling things as I saw them. I always tried to be diplomatic and nice, but I refused to take abuse or cave in on my principles. It made my 40 years a little rough at times, but I survived it all. My wife's principal was joking with her one day and said that I didn't know how to behave. She responded by saying, "You should ask his parents about that."
If you would like to know what I looked like between the ages of 20 and 50, my carbon copy is sitting on the hood of that Corvette....or so people said. The sad thing is that now the hair is gone.
"Hopefully Richard has some connections up north??"
Sorry. All of my connections are either dead or sitting on the beach in a coma. :P
Seriously, don't let her get discouraged. Even with the budget cuts and layoffs, they still need good teachers in many places. The children need her, too. She'll find a position.
When I was in my senior year of high school I got the usual questions about my future career. When I told people that I wanted to be a teacher, many were concerned because there weren't too many teaching jobs at the time. I admit that I got a bit worried at times too, especially as college graduation got closer and closer.
However, one of my high school teachers told me that there is always room for good teachers and I hung onto that.
It seemed to work because I filled out exactly one application and I got the job.
As Richard said, tell her to hang in there, newguy. You never know how things might work out.
If you would like to know what I looked like between the ages of 20 and 50, my carbon copy is sitting on the hood of that Corvette....or so people said
Did you resemble Buzz Murdoch or Todd Styles? I watched every episode of that series.
I still don't know how those guys could afford hotels for 3 years, or how they got the money to buy that Corvette. I forget did only one of them drive it or did they take turns?
I'm in Ohio and teach math in a public university. I also used to teach HS math once-upon-a-time. I'm very much in favor of SB5. Why should taxpayers foot the bill for my pension? There has always been greed on both sides of the bargaining table and it must stop NOW! The union has been over reaching with their demands. I know, I see it whenever contracts are re-negotiated.
When people begin to place the greater good above their own damn selfish greedy interests, this will be a much better place to live.
By the way, some of my greedy colleagues don't like the position I've taken but I let them have it with both barrels. I'm going to do the right thing all the time regardless of the consequences. To do otherwise is cowardice.
It seems that the rhetoric on both sides of the issue has gotten out of hand. I suspect that the vast majority of people (taxpayers) feel that teachers should be payed a respectable wage (professional job, and an important one, that requires lots of education). And they don't begrudge teachers a reasonable pension/retirement plan and benefits.
But, they just want them brought into line with private industry. and many teacher unions seem to treat that request as an act of war, and try to paint it as stripping everything away from them, putting teachers one step above the homeless!
As a former local NEA president, I can tell you that "greedy" does sum it up for this union. My experience was that the most greedy teachers were actually the worst teachers in the classroom. We had a large local and NEA wasn't fond of my six year term as president. Why? Because I wouldn't play ball when they went beyond what was reasonable. I want teachers to have a salary that is in line with private industry, and one that includes a pension---though pensions are now mostly a thing of the past. In exchange, educators should not expect the benefit of tenure and other ridiculous requests. I realize that university personnel need tenure for publishing purposes and other reasons. As for public school teachers, just do a good job and you won't need tenure. If discrimination raises its ugly head, there are laws to protect you in those isolated incidents. Too many teachers hide behind tenure because they do a poor job and don't want to be fired. As a former personnel director, tenure made it very difficult for me to have a sorry teacher fired. The children were the victims of this abuse.
We've had the Pilot for 12 days & have over 1,000 miles on it already. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with what I have. In 5 years when it is paid off and I don't have to worry about anything except changing the oil, it's not going to matter. Our Pilot is great! I was just venting a little bit.

As to having personality, my van turns 22 this model year and it has personality to spare. Saturday as I pulled into my stall at the Farmer's Market I heard a hissing sound like air escaping and the brake pedal went to the floor. I checked for fluid leaks and feared a bad master cylinder but a few minutes later, when I re-entered the van, the brakes were functioning fine. I wondered later if I had dreamed it all.

To use the legislature to void previously bargained contracts just seems wrong.... Legislation that makes changes for future deals? I'm okay with that.
Don't want the high pension and medical costs? Don't agree to pay them. Want a fix? The next contract is less than three years away.
Otherwise, they could just pass laws that would let debtors welch on their mortgages! :surprise:
There's a guy in the "Acura TSX Prices Paid Forum" who is being offered a new (leftover) 2010 Acura TSX V6 w/ Technology Package (MSRP $38K+) for $31,500 and wants to know if it was a good deal.
IT IS $7,000 + OFF THE MSRP, OF COURSE IT IS A GOOD DEAL!

Without fail, someone will jump in and tell them about how they got ripped off.
Also, if someone cuts you off you can just plow into them !!
Hmmm, I like that idea.
That is better than having one of those blaster guns attached to the instrument panel, if someone gets in your way, you just blast them with your sub machine gun....better than actual road rage.
.or did they take turns?" While both drove the car, Todd was the regular driver.
Thanks for the answers....did you watch the show regularly? You probably did if you looked like George Maharis. I actually bought his album which was out at the time, it had the song, Get Your Kicks, on Route 66". The instrumental is a really good too, by Nelson Riddle.
In 5 years when it is paid off and I don't have to worry about anything except changing the oil, it's not going to matter
That is exactly the way to look at it. And, even isell says if they are giving lower finance rates they have to raise the price of the car.
You might have lost a bit, because they might have been sitting on cheap money, but not a whole lot....and you might not have got your car if you waited.
Glad you are enjoying, it, but at that rate you are going to have a lot of miles on it.
Mine always told me that one in four children born were Chinese and since I was the fourth kid I was Chinese.
That's what happened to us. we have four kids and sure enough the youngest is Chinese.
Well, I am back. explorer4+++ - we only went through Hartford. We were heading to New Hampshire. took the usual 84 up but the Meritt Parkway back which is way better. Good time but I am exhausted.
imid - good points. There is a major money grab being attempted in many states and they see public pension money as an easy grab. Here in NJ the state didn't pay its share into the fund while robbing worker contributions to try and balance the budget. This was Christie Whitman who, were there any justice would be in jail now. Several times they have upped our contribution to try and improve the situation while they are still not paying he share they are mandated by law to contribute.
When yo hear our current governor rant about teachers this is his underlying message - he wants the money that the teachers put iinto their own pensions. He'll say "we just don't have the money to pay these pensions" but what he means is they stole the money from a system that previous to the GOP led raid of the funds had been a system that was actuarially sound.

It's possible they are trying to sell cars they have (Pilots?) than cars they can't get because of the situation in Japan.
But I'm sure there will now be people holding out just hoping rates will go even lower. People are funny.
I really hate to see them do this. They "train" their customer to expect and demand rates like this all of the time.
And there is no question that they build this into the prices of their cars so who is kidding who?

But, they just want them brought into line with private industry. and many teacher unions seem to treat that request as an act of war, and try to paint it as stripping everything away from them, putting teachers one step above the homeless!

Todd's father died and left him the new Corvette---but very little money.

I was joking. I wouldn't expect you to drive. The weather today is cloudy and cold. At least it's not raining.
Hey, I just realized that TCJ is younger than me:).

"...I think that would be fun. Especially a big old GM with lots of dents...a car has to be a little temperamental and has to have some personality..."
I told you before, my GMC van is NOT for sale!
Now that's personality! :lemon:

How about substitute bus driver--which I frequently am. I once asked the dispatcher why she kept assigning me runs which were confusing to drive or had troubled children. She said it was because all the other drivers refused to do them. :confuse:

To use the legislature to void previously bargained contracts just seems wrong.... Legislation that makes changes for future deals? I'm okay with that.
Don't want the high pension and medical costs? Don't agree to pay them. Want a fix? The next contract is less than three years away.
Otherwise, they could just pass laws that would let debtors welch on their mortgages! :surprise:

IT IS $7,000 + OFF THE MSRP, OF COURSE IT IS A GOOD DEAL!

The posters that amaze me are the ones who will go ahead and make a purchase. THEN, they will go to the Prices Paid Forums and ask..." Did I pay too much?"
Without fail, someone will jump in and tell them about how they got ripped off.
That is a screaming deal, almost 20% off MSRP. When my buddy bought his Explorere he got over 7K off, however, $4500 of that was rebates from Ford.
As for the age thing, I always thought I was one of the youngest guys around here. :shades:

That is better than having one of those blaster guns attached to the instrument panel, if someone gets in your way, you just blast them with your sub machine gun....better than actual road rage.

Thanks for the answers....did you watch the show regularly? You probably did if you looked like George Maharis. I actually bought his album which was out at the time, it had the song, Get Your Kicks, on Route 66". The instrumental is a really good too, by Nelson Riddle.

No, that's just plain scary. Either the van has ghosts, or you need a check-up.

That's the way I remember it too. Kind of got lame near the end......but that show was like watching a dream for a lot of kids. Sounds like a great way to pass time. Maybe I'll do that when I am fully retired...but in a BMW of course.
