I was hoping for some opinions on this subject matter or from personal experience would even be better. Have you found that when getting a new car, you were able to get a better deal over the internet and then going down to sign the paperwork or just doing everything in person with a regular car salesman?
I'm about 3 hours from Boone---home to Appalachian State University. I spent my first two years of undergraduate work there. It's a pretty mountain college town, just off of the Blueridge Parkway. Getting around is very easy and there is lots to do. The resort towns of Blowing Rock and Banner Elk are only about 9 miles from Boone. Mountain real estate can be a little pricy, but there are some good deals to be made. You're only about an hour and a half from Charlotte if you get the urge to visit a good sized city. Boone has skiing and all of the winter sports, plus fall and spring are absolutely delightful times to visit. If you decide to go for a visit, let me know. I can recommend some great restaurants and nice, inexpensive motels. We usually go up there two or three times a year, especially in the fall for the October foliage on the parkway. There's just nothing prettier than that.
Actually, we've covered your topic in depth several times over the last few years. We have one poster who always buys his cars on the internet---the complete process. Other posters like to visit the dealerships in person to make their deals. Still, we have other posters who use a combination of these two methods.
Personally, I use the internet to "visit" dealer sites to see what is out there and what the asking prices appear to be. I then compare my findings by going to sites like Edmunds, Autotrader, KBB, etc. If I see a car that really interests me, I may contact the internet manager for the dealership or call the sales manager. This is only to confirm availability and price. I do all of my negotiating in person. I always have a trade as part of the deal. Once I'm 95% interested in a vehicle, I have my trade detailed and head for the dealership. Thanks to my poster friends here, I have become a pretty good negotiator, but not a ruthless grinder. I leave room for some salesman profit. I did very well on my last two deals: A Chrysler Sebring Touring convertible and a Cadillac SRX. Hope this helps.
I like your truck, but it really could use a wash and wax.
I was thinking the same thing.

The time had come for a new vehicle for my wife. She likes trucks and settled on a Ford F150 FX4 with a few specific options. She had some flexibility over color so we thought might find one on a lot, but otherwise we'd order.
First, we tried the Truecar service and got responses from several local dealers. I may be wrong but it seems that the 'internet guy' is always the salesperson that the management don't want front of house because they're so socially inept when face to face with a prospect.
To a man (or woman), they ignored our requested specification and tried to push us into something on the lot that suited their idea of what we should have. When they followed up with phone calls they weren't exactly rude, but certainly implied that as we would be getting a 'special' discount we should take something from the lot, and all said that if we ordered it would have to be at full MSRP. Well, as we qualify for 'X' plan I knew that wasn't true, but as I'm polite and don't enjoy arguing, it was 'bye-bye' local dealers, 'hello' independent research.
We both searched and after a while my wife came up with a possibility. It was the color she most wanted but much more heavily optioned than we (she!) could originally justify.......but the price was right......MSRP $45985 - Sale Price $37995.
The MSRP for the specification of truck we would have ordered would be $44605, which seemed odd until we found that the loaded $45K truck was built in February, and that Ford have had three or four price increases since then.
Anyhow, after a two drive to the dealer and finding the salesman we had spoken with, we found him in a panic because he couldn't locate the truck on any of the lots (it's a huge dealership)! It turned out in the end to be sitting under spotlights in the middle of the showroom floor!!!
Now I'm sorry, but after the buildup comes an anticlimax. We go into the booth and the salesman takes our personal details and looks happy (we both have excellent credit). He then goes off for five minutes and comes back with details of the proposed deal (and I though I was supposed to make the first offer!). The bottom line is the $37995 plus t.t.&t. (tax here is 6%) plus a bunch of small stuff like battery acid disposal fee $2, tire disposal fee $6, and a couple of other minor items. I looked at his sheet and pointed to the $995 and said if you remove that from the $37,995 I think we have a deal. He didn't look quite as happy as before, but duly went off to see what he could do. When he came back he said they'd found a $750 coupon my wife qualified for when she'd been researching F150s on the Ford site some months previously. We'd forgotten about it but Ford obviously had it on file somewhere. He said we could apply that and that the dealership would kick in the other $245, so that the total would be $40552.25 out the door.
I said "I prefer round numbers, so if you could make that $40500 and pass me a pen, I'll sign on the dotted line". He handed me the pen.
Negotiations had taken around 30-45 minutes, then about 20 minutes were spent with the finance guy, mostly signing various disclaimers and say no to 'mop 'n glo' and warranties. One thing that did surprise me was that he had the tag and registration on the desk for us. Some years previously we turned in a tag on a vehicle that we took off the road and it was laying on file still with the DMV. He was able to pull up the details and assign them to the truck....cool!
The good thing about it being in the showroom was that it was already prepped, but downside was that it took 10 minutes shuffling cars and moving balloons to get it out. However, before handing it over they did run it up the road and fill the 36 gallon tank.
Very easy deal, very good value for us, $40.5K out the door complete with a tag (runs until December) and a full tank, plus it had probably never been demo'd as it only 15 miles on the clock. Except for a couple of minor items it was fully loaded, and we paid thousands less than we were expecting to locally for a much lower specification truck. I'm sure it was a small deal for them, but they stressed they were high volume dealer and every unit mattered.
So we're happy, they're happy, and I'm just sorry I couldn't provide a more dramatic sales story (not really). It almost felt like the dealer was a lay down, although I know they wouldn't have done the deal if it wasn't in their interest.
One thing I can tell you, having just started to explore the features of this truck, I feel like I'm living in the future! My wife said it's like a computer with wheels. :shades:
The bottom line is the $37995 plus t.t.&t. (tax here is 6%) plus a bunch of small stuff like battery acid disposal fee $2, tire disposal fee $6, and a couple of other minor items.
What? You're buying a new car and get hit with battery acid and tire disposal fees? Why would they incure any disposal fees if you are buying the car?
Was there a trade in? If not then why those fees? If so shouldn't they have been factored into the trade in amount?
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
It's for the acid and tires on the new vehicle, (no trade in). It's standard stuff here in FL. You have to pay it when you buy new tires or a battery too.
o we're happy, they're happy, and I'm just sorry I couldn't provide a more dramatic sales story
I liked your story and I think you made out like a bandit. The cards kind of fellin your favor because of when the truck was made and that it was in stock, but that's OK you played it well and I don't think you could get that vehicle for less.
I am curious, what color is it?
You did remind me I saw in the newspaper yesterday a Lincoln MKZ for $34000 Cdn....which should make it about $30,000 USA. Even though our dollar is higher it isn't reflected in prices. I thought that is a pretty good price since that article we all read said the average price of a car in the US is now just below $30k. So the average person could be buying a Lincoln for just a bit more than say a Camry!
It included a Ford $5000 special discount and a Costco $1000 discount, but still, that seems like a lot of car for $30k.
Maybe your F150 had some kind of discount program on it like that, or maybe they don't necessarily run programs at the same time.
I feel the same way about the electronics in the Explorer. So far, I have not activated Sync(my phone is so old, it's not Sync'able). Once I upgrade my phone, I'll try out the voice commands, too. For now, I have the left side screen set up with the virtual tach/odometer/fuel gauge, the right dash screen with a virtual old school black ball compass, and the front center screen displaying audio.
2024 Ford F-150 STX, 2023 Ford Explorer ST, 91 Mustang GT vert
I can see paying for that stuff if you are having a battery or a tire replaced, but when buying new and not replacing anything? There is nothing to dispose of, you are paying them to do nothing.
Now I know its not much money but hey its for nothing.
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
There is nothing to dispose of, you are paying them to do nothing.
The theory is that you're pre-paying in advance for their disposal. Of course, when you buy new tires or a battery you then pre-pay for its disposal in advance, and so it goes on!
It's a really bright non-metallic red. You can see the full specs (if you screw your eyes up) in the Moroney Sticker.
Yes, right place, right time, etc. It was all pleasantly done with no attitude on either side; and they wouldn't have done the deal if it hadn't been profitable in some way for them.
"...Why would they incure any disposal fees if you are buying the car?..."
It's a scam the goverment runs to nick you for a few bucks. In theory you can get the fees back later but no one ever remembers to do that if they dispose of those things themselves.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
In theory maybe, in reality you are paying for nothing.
Suppose I buy the car and pay those disposal fees then move out of state. In that state I pay any disposal fees when I actually dispose of the product. Then I pay twice.
In my neck of the woods you don't pay a disposal fee, however for many things like car batteries you pay more if you don't turn in the old battery. They do that to promote recycling and proper disposal.

2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
I have to adjust to the fact that trucks are more like cargo hauling SUVs these days.
It's really a luxury SUV with a box on the back. It's not just the gadgets like voice command for the a/c (among other things), or the color backup camera, or the power moon roof.
It's the traction and stability control, and the trailer control that brakes the wheels individually to keep the truck in line if the trailer starts to sway (and the six airbags in case it doesn't ).
They all make it very different from the '93 F150 we used to have and which ran for fifteen years and 150K miles, and still sold sold for $1K. :surprise:
Mac, the F150 is my favorite truck, though I have never owned one. If I bought one, it would be that bright red with the black interior---beautiful combination! Congratulations. I'm sure that both of you will really enjoy it. After reading the sticker, I see that it has everything except the kitchen sink. I'm sure that you could add that in the back if you decide to do so.

Now I know its not much money but hey its for nothing.

The theory is that you're pre-paying in advance for their disposal.
Of course, when you buy new tires or a battery you then pre-pay for its disposal in advance, and so it goes on!
Yes, right place, right time, etc. It was all pleasantly done with no attitude on either side; and they wouldn't have done the deal if it hadn't been profitable in some way for them.
Yes, my wife is doubly happy; the truck and the deal.
I'm doubly happy too; the deal and the happy wife!
I'm just jealous you got one off the showroom floor.
In all my buying years I have never taken one from the showroom.
Florida sounds like a nickel dime trap, not to mention their fees. You did well!

The State (like many) wants their money up front. They don't want to try to tax you later when you throw them down the ravine behind your trailer. :P
But that price $40.5K! Yikes. The most I ever paid for a truck was $1500.
I have to adjust to the fact that trucks are more like cargo hauling SUVs these days.

It's a scam the goverment runs to nick you for a few bucks. In theory you can get the fees back later but no one ever remembers to do that if they dispose of those things themselves.

Snake lives in a trailer? I thought he was rich like the rest of you guys.
I guess that explains how he can afford all that other fancy stuff.

It's based on the Ford Kuga. I think it looks really nice.
I just came back from the basement and I couldn't find any wheels (well there is the old chrome Schwinn bike that I have been meaning to restore but that doesn't count).

It's really a luxury SUV with a box on the back. It's not just the gadgets like voice command for the a/c (among other things), or the color backup camera, or the power moon roof.
It's the traction and stability control, and the trailer control that brakes the wheels individually to keep the truck in line if the trailer starts to sway (and the six airbags in case it doesn't
They all make it very different from the '93 F150 we used to have and which ran for fifteen years and 150K miles, and still sold sold for $1K. :surprise:
Richard
You are correct. Al Capone always took care of those for free.

It's a TRUCK !!
Give me a decent radio, AT, A/C and I'm happy!
And some people wonder why cars cost so much these days!
