When we leave our home in Canada we will put the thermometer for about 60 degrees.
My BIL says he puts some anti-freeze in the toilets so that if the power goes off and the temp is below freezing, things won't freeze up and crack the toilet bowl for example.
I will say, he is on a septic system, but I am not so sure about putting antifreeze into the city water system.
What do you think.
Trip is still on...I'll visit my Mother in the hospital and make sure there is nothing negative, and now my wife is limping and has a badly swollen ankle from jumping in her exercise class.

Use RV antifreeze. It's non-toxic and fine for release into the sewer system.

Thanks all! Glad you enjoyed hearing about that little experience. To answer some questions.....
-The dealer's name is Kings Ford, in Mason (at least I think it's Mason), OH. -I was not particular about color or options. I was more interested in it being cheap. This one is silver with black interior, about as non-de-script as you can get. It has an option package (I think 203?) that includes synch and a couple of minor options. And, it has an automatic. That's it. -According to the dealer paperwork, the car was delivered to them in Sept, so they've had it for about 90 days. It had 23 miles on the odo when I drove it off the lot, and that includes about 10 miles I put on it during the test drive. I don't understand that, given they're good cars and not white elephants. That said, the sales person said he had just brought it out from being buried behind an F 250 which he sold about an hour before I walked in their door.
You aren't going to win any stoplight wars, but as mentioned, it's supposed to get good MPG. It's quiet, comfortable, and rides/handles well. I'm used to driving little rental cars (Toyota Yaris, Chev Cobalt, Nissan Sentra, etc). The Fiesta is certainly head and shoulders above those cars. For the money, I sure didn't think there was a better car out there.
Folks are right about Ford's Synch. I didn't have any problems with BMW's I-Drive. But Synch isn't exactly intuitive. I'll figure it out, but Ford has some work to do.
Admittedly, it was an impulse buy. But, if I can get 9 years, and 100K+ miles out of it, with no major muss or fuss, like the Elantra, I'll be happy.
Did they make money on it? It really doesn't matter to me. They probably made a couple hundred on the Fiesta. Given what I saw on their used lot, I'm betting they won't wholesale the Elantra. I'm guessing they'll be able to put $500, maybe $750 into it. Put it on the lot. And make $500-$1,000 on it. They aren't going to get rich doing business that way.
But, it's the end of the year, and I'm betting they're getting close to some year-end bonuses.
J....clearly I missed something during my absence. I know you were pretty high on Hyundai, but something went wrong in the interim?
I thought about looking at Hyundais. But, I liked the Fiesta and the opportunity was there. So, I pulled the trigger.
Someone asked about the BMW....it's doing very well. Very pleased with it. I'm getting about 22 MPG in mixed driving. I'm not exactly light on the right pedal either. I haven't had to take it to the dealer in the 6 months I've owned it....not even for a squeak. So, I'm pleased.
Talk to jmonroe on the sudden change on Hyundai. It will make perfect sense to you.
Meanwhile, gotta stop showing me these BMW pieces unless when I get out to the hospital you guys are looking to give me , say, a 335 convertible with manual, and sport, performance, tech and cold weather packages as a get well present....

J....clearly I missed something during my absence. I know you were pretty high on Hyundai, but something went wrong in the interim?
It sure did and it wasn’t pretty for me. To make a long story short Hyundai refused to make good on their 100K mile engine warranty by replacing it in Mrs. j’s ’05 XG350, with a little over 41K miles on it, when it threw a rod. The dealer and Hyundai were hung up on a technicality about an oil log sheet that I used when I did the oil changes myself even though they admitted several times that the engine was “VERY CLEAN” (their words not mine). If you want the gory details go to posts 74779, 74794 and 74861 and some others in the string.

Sorry to be slow. Yeah, totally agree about avoiding typical ethylene glycol antifreeze. The RV version is perfectly safe, but the automotive kind is about the worst thing around your house you can dump into a sewer system. The ol' saying, "the solution to pollution is dilution" applies here, but the dilution ratio to make ethylene glycol nontoxic is just ridiculous.
Preventing plumbing from freezing in your home is a tricky proposition when electrical supply is cut long term. The sewer is just one part of the equation. You've got the fresh water side to think about, too. The best system we had was in our last home which had a distribution panel, wherein the main fed into the main panel, and then each fixture was attached with an independent cold and hot water line. From that panel we could turn off every line with a quarter-turn valve. I loved that for when we traveled. The main line that fed the panel came from underground into the basement that held a steady temperature regardless of heat in the house. What a great system.
Made me want to go right out and buy one until I read some of the comments on Edmunds about $2000 brake jobs and bad trannys.
And most of those stories are from people who heard from their barber that his first cousin knew a guy who worked in a store down the street and that guy's best friend's brother in law went to a dentist who knew a patient who had read on the internet about how a brake job for a BMW costs $2000.

He said he does that all the time and just use it generously.
if I can get 9 years, and 100K+ miles out of it, with no major muss or fuss, like the Elantra, I'll be happy.
Sounds like a great idea and it is better than parking the new bimmmer at the airport where it could get stolen. Probably, amatorized over 9 years it will cost less than $2000 a year to run which is less than your bimmer insurance would go up if it were stolen.
I can rationalize any purchase.
But I think it was better than taking the chance on a used car and this way you know you aren't going to have a breakdown when you are in a hurry to get to the airport.
Silver with black interior sounds nice and the 4 door is a good idea. I like the wild colors Fiestas come in, but in 9 years you will be glad you got silver.
Though I don't have time to respond to several of the posts, I do want to wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year. I'm taking the lap top to Florida, so I'll try to catch up with the posts a little later.
LOL. Well, the guy at work who told me he was dumping his 3 series because he got a $2000 estimate for brakes must have the same barber.
The guy at work was obviously getting, as the Brits put it, "a jolly good rogering" from his dealer. That's what happens when you go to an unscrupulous dealer, hand your credit card to the cashier, drop your pants and grab your ankles. OEM pads, rotors, and wear sensors for a 335i(the most powerful non-M 3 Series) have a MSRP of $851.28, so the poor [non-permissible content removed] was getting hosed with a $1150 labor charge for a one to two hour procedure. He would have paid $1000 -or less- for the same job at an honest dealer or indie shop. Oh well, I'm glad those urban legends continue to be spread; it depresses the values of used BMWs- which is good for me!

That's why I bought the Solara. I wanted the drop top moire than I wanted the BMW at the time and not going to do anything about it until 1. I come out the other side of the transplant; and 2. Ha ha I think they'ed call you "cheeky" for saying that. So you say $850 for parts and I'd just throw out a guess of twice that with labor at a dealer. Comes in around $1700. Still pretty rich if you don't know how to do it yourself.
If I could afford a new 335 I probably wouldn't care but that brake job would cost more than TWO of the vehicles I currently own. :lemon:

That just happens too often. Even Kim Jong-il died at 69! That was a factor for me wanting the place in Florida and buying the 535. I know you shouldn't spend beyond your means, especially since savings don't seem to produce much income these days, but there is a balance....enjoy what you can but don't overextend yourself.
One of my very close friends I went to High School with died when he was just 27 years old. He went out to dinner with some college friends, drove home, and had a reaction to some clams that were brushed with peanut oil. He dropped dead in the lobby of his building. This was in 2004.

m6vx: Federal regulation allows non-chlorinated well water in certain situations because most wells are free of harmful organics. Even small cities with very limited populations can supply non-chlorinated water. Such systems do take a risk, though, and there's one local situation I can speak to since it went public about a year ago. A local city with a small population provided non-chlorinated potable water from their wells for decades without a problem, but there came a weekend last year in which literally 1/2 the population went to the hospital with severe intestinal infections. The investigation revealed a contractor had cross-connected a secondary-irrigation line with the potable line, infecting the entire distribution system with non-chlorinated and non-treated surface irrigation water. Had they chlorinated their well water, the residuals likely would have kept the water safe. Any guesses what that city is now doing? Yep, chlorinating.
If you're on a private well, and you've never had your water tested, it may be worth running a simple test spectrum with a local lab looking for the worst stuff (heavy metals, nutrients, organics). That'll give you a baseline just to insure the well water is essentially safe.
After that, the best you can do is insure your lines will be free of contaminants. Don't give the bugs a chance to set up shop. If you ever have to work on your fresh water plumbing, shock that area with chlorine to remove any harmful bacteria and thoroughly flush the line. The well water will be safe, so the most important piece is preventing bacteria intrusion into your plumbing.
I don't know if you are on Facebook or not. But an excellent way to spread your anti-Hyundai message is on their Facebook page. "Like" Hyundai on Facebook & write your story. Someone WILL notice.

I got an amazing gift also, a half-day rental on a sander. Today we moved everything out of the living room and dining room. Tomorrow I attack the hardwood floors.
Your wife needs to call mine and give her ideas on Christmas gifts!
I have been reading to catch up so; michaell....wow, what a nice gift. I wonder what your wife is expecting in return.
tyguy, That was very interesting info about wells. We used to live in the country and we had a well. Great water but we got it tested a few times a year at a city lab. Occassionally there would be run off if it rained really hard, and the water would get contaminated. Had to add chlorine, but that fixed it up.
M6vx ILike that gift of a sander. What did you give, an iron?
We have been travelling 10 hours a day and we have covered about 1200 miles in 2 days...lots of driving but we are just doing what we can do.
The 535 is incredible, so comfortable with lots of power for times when you need it. I love having the power to get away from or around dangerous drivers like the ones who go very slowly in the left lane. There are also drivers who push from the rear and want you to go faster when you can't...they usually drive large pick up trucks.
The 535 is getting an amazing 25 mpg (US gallon). I don't know how they did that. That's in sport mode and not using economy mode which would get better mileage but would kind of suck, power wise. The 8 gears probably helps. I noticed gas went from a high of $3.30 to a low of $3.07, a bargain when it is almost $5 at home.
I also noticed in the gas filling compartment you just need 89 octane, not 91, so that's a bit of a savings.
Oh, and Sirius radio has been a real bonus. The songs on the 50s on 5 and 60s on 6 are all excellent, and it is so nice not to have commercials and talking...just one song after the other. And, it lists the title and artist on the screen.
The navigation system is nice and easy to use too. There's another business down the drain these days (like Blockbuster)...the map business.
It's a great highway car......we should reach our destination in another 4 or 5 hours.
I'm glad to read the drive is going so well and you're enjoying the BMW so thoroughly. Sorry about the rude drivers. At least most of us are better drivers than you'll find in India, though. Those people terrify me, or at least did for the first month until I was numbed to the shear number of life-threatening situations encountered on a daily basis.
I think you were wise to have your well water tested regularly, especially if you had surface water intrusion, which almost guarantees bad bugs making their way into the well.
The 535 is getting an amazing 25 mpg (US gallon). I don't know how they did that.
I hate to give credit where credit is due (given my Hyundai fiasco) but when we drove to Myrtle Beach in August of ’09 after the Genny purchase in March of ’09, for the leg of the trip at night just before we pulled into a motel just outside of Charlotte SC around midnight, I noticed that my trip computer said I was getting 26.9 MPG and that was with 4 adults in the car with associated luggage and the A/C on auto. I think I averaged about 23 MPG on the way home (around 620 miles).
Oh, and Sirius radio has been a real bonus. The songs on the 50s on 5 and 60s on 6 are all excellent,
Only an old goat would admit to listening to those stations but I know what you mean.

Social Security kicks in. (OK - make that 3. - the wife's Camry is paid off.) God willing all come through in about 13 months. Maybe a little longer on paying off the Camry...
Merry Christmas to all my friends in here. For those that don't want a Merry Christmas if you'd like a Happy Hannukah by all means. If none of the above, enjoy!

And to all a good night.
Plan is to be up at 6 and on the road by 7 a.m.

What about those of us that are on a well? There's no chlorine in the lines --- EVER!
Is there something I should be doing?
PS thanks for listening to my crying about the XG350.

I'm on winter break, but working full time until I go back in mid-January.
On another note, my fiancée has close to had it with her Mazda. Died again this week. Looking into manufacturer buyback or flipping it into something else. May have a sales story soon, who knows.
+1 from here in Colorado.
Wife gave me a pretty amazing gift ... a half-day driving 5 supercars on a 120 mile road trip. Ferrari, Lambo, Audi R8, etc. are supposed to be included. Breakfast and pictures are part of the package, so I'll have something to post once it's done.
Looked at the calendar -- the only offering here in Colorado is early August.

Nothing like being a bragger. I guess now you want your poster buddies to start bidding for a ride in the passenger’s seat, huh?
Nice gift. Enjoy your seat time.

That will be a great time! - seriously.
m6vx: Federal regulation allows non-chlorinated well water in certain situations because most wells are free of harmful organics.
Sorry to mis-categorize. Have a happy Hannukua, Christmas and winter solstice (in case you're a Druid).

Where else could I get an answer like that, except an auto sales forum?
Auto sales stories and a whole lot more!!!
Your wife needs to call mine and give her ideas on Christmas gifts!
michaell....wow, what a nice gift.

I think you were wise to have your well water tested regularly, especially if you had surface water intrusion, which almost guarantees bad bugs making their way into the well.

Fine and enjoy yourself when you get there. Just don’t go rubbing it in with daily weather reports.
