Otherwise it would be the XG350 sitting here and we wouldn’t be having this conversation

You should get a job selling cars, at least a commission on every possible Hyundai customer that you steer to other makes. Then you will make that money spent to buy the Subbie really fast.

Like you said, it is hard to compare the Gennie to the Subaru, but, how did the XG350 compare to the Subie for ride, steering, enjoyment etc.

You may have to go back for a lesson with the GPS. The engine may have to be off if it is like mine...at least mine has to be in neutral. They don't want you messing with it while you are driving. In fact, a sreen comes up each time and I have to agree to their terms every time I drive the car. Your salesperson can probably give you a quick lesson.

I know the BMW system was a problem in earlier cars, but the i-drive system is fairly easy to use, even for the technologically challenged such as me.

But it is very handy when you have to go to someplace new.

there are lots of new places we have to find in Florida, and the GPS is a really nice feature. I haven't listened to regular radio since having Sirius. These things really spoil you. They both work on satelites of course, but it does amaze me how fast technology is advancing these days...what a difference it makes. We didn't have to look at a paper map for a 1500 mile trip. We stopped at a gas station and I saw a display with maps on it...there's goes another business that won't be around in a few years.

and my sister's computer wasn't working at her home in Port St. Lucie

Being technologically challenged must run in the genes in your family. (Don't be offended, I am just as bad). My guess was that you were having a problem getting your laptop working, but I didn't think you would have forgot it completely.

I saw so many BMW's and MB's but very few Cadillacs.
I am near Sun City....you have to be 55+ to live there, so I still see quite a few Caddilacs, but I it seems younger people don't have the same ties to the Detroit 3. Even here MBs BMWs and Audis outnumber Cadillacs.

I gave my wife a Nookcolor for Christmas.
Another nail in the coffin of the book business. E-readers are amazing and we bought a Kindle. There are a few big advantages to ebooks; you can take a lot of books with you on a trip, and, you can order a book instantly from any where in the world. But, most of the people I talk to say they prefer a real book just because your mind processes what you are reading differently, and it is more enjoyable holding and reading a book. But, the E-reader is unmatched in certain situations.

Glad you had a great trip and welcome back, things have been slow here the last week. You got back just before the cold weather hits Florida. Low 50s for a high tomorrow, but better for me than at home where it will be 0 (zero).

People here are complaining that 50s are cold....I think it is a great temperature.

What do you mean you forgot the laptop? Don't you have it connected to a cord that you could just yank from down in Florida and have it drag over hundreds of miles and into your hands? Well, the remaining pieces back in your hands? You are going to have to do better than that.....

This from the guy sending us another cold air mass. Thanks a bunch! :(

Yesterday the high was in the mid-50s. Today the upper 40s. Tonight we get some of that damned Canadian air and are expecting a high of 32.

Look, if you'll stop sending the cold masses our way we'll consider sending better TV programs your way....

"Being technologically challenged must run in the genes in your family."

Actually, no. My sister is very computer literate. She knows the data base and its operations at their medical clinic better than the office manager. It was her server in Florida that was at fault. With three houses, she's always dealing with one problem or another. She had it corrected before we left to return home.

With all of the new technology, you're fortunate to be on the down side of your business. Libraries and book stores will soon be a thing of the past. As for me, I prefer a hard back copy myself. I never even enjoyed the paper back copies. Still, the ebooks are a handy tool to have these days. It's similar to the NAV systems on cars. Though very handy, I still prefer to hold and study a paper map.

As for the weather, we returned just in time for the cold blast coming from your country. We won't get out of the 30's tomorrow. As usual, our heat pump will struggle to keep us warm. The trick is to push the thermostat up a couple of degrees. Usually, heat pumps are fine in the South, but not in really cold weather. Hopefully, our next house will have a gas pack.

As for younger people not driving the Detroit 3, they are missing some good cars in some cases. Outside of a Miata and an MGB, I've always driven American made cars. As long as they provide the comfort and the performance that I enjoy, I doubt that I'll ever change. I've driven the Boxer, the Jag and the MB. While they were all nice cars, I still didn't feel inclined to purchase one of them. Still, all things are possible. I won't say that I'll never buy a foreign made automobile. I'm sure that many of them are very good.

Post them on facebook or some other net based storage medium, then go to properties and get the net address (copy). Choose IMG at the bottom of this page, paste address, hit IMG again to close. Post message with pic(s).

I agree, there are some excellent American made cars. I prefer the Fusion to any of the competition. American cars are generally a little more spacious. I like the fact they can be repaired at garages other than the dealers. They are made to pretty good standards these days, I don't hear about too many lemons.

It's just a matter of personal choice, price and suitability. I wouldn't say no to American or foreign cars, they have to be tried out and compare what the reviews say and the dependability.

Like you said, it is hard to compare the Gennie to the Subaru, but, how did the XG350 compare to the Subie for ride, steering, enjoyment etc.

The XG350 has a softer ride and mushier steering compared to the Subie and the Subie has gobs more power. Maybe the engine in the XG350 was a bad one right from the beginning and I never noticed it. Then it just blew up one day.

You may have to go back for a lesson with the GPS. The engine may have to be off if it is like mine...at least mine has to be in neutral. Your salesperson can probably give you a quick lesson.

My salesman is in Columbus Ohio so I’m not going to get any help from him about the NAV. He was a nice guy but he barely knew how to get the cell phone paired to the car. With the Subie Bluetooth you can’t download the cell phone book numbers to the car in one fell swoop. You have to do it one by one (what a pain). At least that is what the tech savvy guy at the dealership said and so far I can’t get it downloaded in full either like I can do with the Genny.

That bit about acknowledging that you shouldn’t look at the NAV while driving is a joke. That message is just a legal disclaimer. I realize that you can’t get fixated on the NAV while driving but I don’t know of anyone that has a NAV system that doesn’t look at it. After all, what good is it if you can’t glance at it to see where you are going and what turns you have to make? Having a map lying on the seat is far worse. :confuse:

Usually, heat pumps are fine in the South, but not in really cold weather. Hopefully, our next house will have a gas pack.

I agree with you about heat pumps for heat. When we lived in SC we had a heat pump for the second floor and it worked better as an A/C than it did as a heater. In the South you can get away with a heat pump but I know they aren’t too good in the North. My brother had one and it was backed up with electrical strip heaters for when it dropped below freezing. I’ll bet the meter took off when that kicked in but not as bad as when you turn on a self cleaning oven. The first time I looked at the meter when Mrs. j turned than thing on I thought the poor meter was going to torque itself off the wall.

For those that aren’t familiar with a “gas pack”, they are popular in the South (I have never seen one in the North) and we had one for the first floor. It is a package that sits outside that contains a conventional gas furnace and an A/C all in one unit. These are fine but I’m not a fan of heat pumps for heat.

Driver, we have a Pioneer DVD and 500GB Hard Drive recorder that we had for about 4 years now (that I won from Nissan back in 07) that retailed for about $700 back then,

It plays DVDs, records on DVDs, and records on the built in hard drive. It's quite useful as we can record any shows we might miss and we hooked up our VCR to it and recorded our old home videos onto it as well that we plan on burning onto DVDs.

The nice thing about it as well is that you can record TV shows onto the Hard Drive while watching a DVD movie of something else at the same time. So it's quite versatile. And it does hook up with one HDMI cable.

The only challenge is, and I assume it has something to do with the TV receiver or cable box is that it only records whatever channel you're watching at the time. For example, you can't record one channel while watching something else.

It's a neat toy and much better option than renting a box with limited use from a cable provider. Most of those don't have DVD players built in either. I'm sure you can find these now for about $250-$400

I’ve said this before; I blame the guy who had it last.

Look at it like this; when you get a cold (illness type), if you know the person who you got it from you blame that person not someone in the Philippines, right? :surprise:

The last snow storm actually went across New Mexico and Texas and then came up our way...that was you sending one up our way.

Be careful with this type of blame. Any weather you get from the South is warm…you’re the ones that screwed it up. :(

"...and it worked better as an A/C than it did as a heater."

It doesn'r even work well in the summer if you have several days in the high 90's or over 100 degrees. The last couple of summers, we had many days when we had to pull the thermostat down as much as 5 degrees to keep cool. Having had gas packs in some of our houses, we found the heat to be really warm. The heat pump blows cool air as it heats the house. I grew up with a fuel oil furnace. The heat seemed to really warm the body. My father took great care of his furnace. We never had any odor or black smut from the fuel oil. What do you find to be the best heat system in the North?

    >It doesn'r even work well in the summer if you have several days in the high 90's or over 100 degrees.

That along with your previous statement that it doesn't maintain warmth in "cold" (grin) weather of 30 degrees may indicate you've either got a poorly sized heat pump per the load of the home or your home is poorly insulated or is leaky.

I'm sittiing here with an ambient temperature of 18 deg. F. and the interior has stayed nicely warmed all day long with my heat pump.

Those used to a gas furnace that turns on to heat up and THEN turns on the air flow blowing out hot air from the start have to adjust to having the air moving around at 85 deg or 80 deg as the ambient drops. A heat pump operates nicely down to somewhere between 20 and 15 deg F before the heat loss from our house excedes the ability of the freon to move heat from the outside air to the interior. And in that case the electric heat strips cut on in a three stage progression. The little extra heat then carries for a time until the heat loss kicks in the extra heat.

The reason Richard64 needs to turn the thermostat up a couple degrees is two-fold. One is that the second thermostat kicks in the heat strips then and maintains that lower temperature without fail. The other is that as the ambient air gets colder the humidity drops. When the interior humidity drops with it, people don't feel as warm. Add to that the moving air inside, this makes the skin feel cooler. Adding humidity to the inside air with a controlled humidifier will help that. Even having water stand in a bathtub where there's a vent to pick up the humidity will help the cold sensation.

We have gas forced air in our house, keeps you warm but the house can get drafty when it's off. My fiancé complains about it being cold both winter and summer. I keep the house at 67 in the winter and 72 or 73 in the summer

IMHO hot water radiator heat is the best because it's more even. When it's off it still has a warming effect since the radiators reain their temperature.

I have no toleration for an A/C unit that will not keep up. Mine is getting up there in age but works great. A buddy of mine put in a top of the line high efficiency Trane and curses it. When we had a hot spell in the upper 90s with hgh humidity it wouldn't get his house below 78. The repairman said it was working to spec

wonder if the new units don't use freon?

What is actually a nice way to heat is radiant floor. Wish I had that. But, just make due with a simple gas hot air heat/AC system. Works OK, with some upstairs/downstairs variability, but I am not that picky!

In the North or Canadian North? Most people in Canada now use gas for heat. It is the lowest cost and cleanest burning. The only problem is, a few buildings or homes blow up every year. Not many, but a few, so my wife prefers electric heat, but it is very expensive. Gas seems to be plentiful if there is as much of it as they think there is.

Oil is expensive and not clean burning. I think the government has programs to help you get rid of your oil burning furnaces now.

You are right....that looks better. The cost is a factor though. This is just for the winter home in Florida where we are for only 2 or 3 months of the year.

I wanted to record the tennis from Australia, which will be on later in January, and with the time difference they play during the middle of the night here.

So, the cost of DVDs might be well worth going with a dvd player.

But, I am going to think about the hard drive recorder, it sure is a much better way to record. For our permanent home I would go with that one for sure.

Both our electrician and our plumber have remarked as to how well the house is insulated. The Lennox unit is seven years old and is checked twice a year for efficiency and performance. Our HVAC company did say that the unit could be a little bigger. Still, I don't think that the size is a problem. Our last home had two units for downstairs and upstairs. We had the same results that we do now. I have to conclude that it is just the nature of the beast. Our present unit works well most of the time, but it struggles in temperatures in the 20's or in the 100's. I just prefer the feeling that the gas pack offers. I suppose that we could call it "the feel of the house". :D Thanks for the tip on the controlled humidifier.

I totally agree. The old radiator types were fantastic. Our farm house in Alabama has those. They warm you to the bone. I love to hear the steam and the clanking of those old pipes, especially on a cold morning as you fry up some bacon and scramble some eggs. What wonderful memories.

My son is good thank you, yes he's a few months over two now. He's a car guy like daddy and can name quite a few car brands just from looking at the logos. Makes me very proud :)
