Congrats on the new TV. You're going to be very happy with it. I have a Samsung 46" LCD 240 hz 1080P TV in my basement & LOVE it! I can't wait to watch my Giants clip the Falcons' wings (got to keep it G rated in the forum here).

HOA rules. My condo had a book full of them. The 1 that really stuck out was "all vehicles must park head in."

Fezo: "and no one is in diapers...."

    Kyfdx: "not yet anyway...."

We may be getting close. I had my first ever accident yesterday at the mall. Talk about humiliation. The bladder attack came so suddenly. By the time that I reached a store with a rest room. it was too late. I had to drive ten miles home; take a shower; wash my clothes; and head back to town to finish my tasks. The person who coined the phrase "The Golden Years" should be hung by their...well, they should be hung. For years and years, I could go for hours at work without having the need for a rest room. I guess that I have finally reached "that" age. I started not to share this, but we have covered so many topics over the years. Then, too, I didn't want you younger guys to be ashamed when your day comes. It does happen to many seniors when they get older. These things are just part of the life cycle. This won't be a surprise to my urologist. He asks me at every visit if it has happened yet. If this experience is the only bad thing that happens to me, I won't mind. I've been so blessed with decent health all of these years.

can't wait to watch my Giants clip the Falcons

Being originally from Pittsburgh, my team was a given.

NY fans have me wondering how they choose between Giants and Jets.

My BIL is a Giants fan while his brother is a Jets fan. (We bought them

both NFL gear for the holidays). So tell me, please. Is it AFC vs NFC, a

favorite player, helmet color or Joe Namath wearing stockings?

That's a tough question to answer. I was an old AFL fan and used to love the Jets but evolved into a solid Giants fan. That's not normal for me (for instance I have been a long suffering Mets fan and never changed that).

I don't know about your BIL and his brother but there's not nearly the rivalry between Jets and Giants fans as there is between Yankees and Mets fans. As a Mets fan I have to wish bad things upon the Yankees but as a Giants fan I hope the Jets do well, too.

I used to love the old AFL. Back then they would not show the home games of the local teams which turned me onto teams like the Raiders and the Chiefs. In those days they were great games. George Blanda was my hero...

We are known as the couple who "never goes to bed". They don't have a rule about that yet

Personally, I like the rules in your community. I know it isn't pleasant living with a bunch of rules, but overall I think your quality of life is going to be better.

Few things are worse than an annoying neighbor, and those rules help to prevent that.

I hear ya, fezo. Hank Stram was a favorite of mine. He always wore a suit and looked large and in charge on the field. The kind of guy you wanted to work for. That was before the Steelers of the 70s emerged. It was before it became a player's game...when the coaches made all the play calls, be it right or wrong.

    . I got a Samsung 42 inch LCD TV with 1080 p and 120 hz.

You can't go wrong with a Samsung. The new TVs are incredible and the price has come down so much.
We were one of the 1st people to have a TV in our city in 1952 and our 17' G.E. cost $400 back then.
Look at what you get for a little more than that today. Even our 50 in Samsung was $3000 when they came out 4 years ago. Today you can buy one for about $1000, and it is probably a lt better TV.
    The world is changing.

For example, a neighbor who things his purpose of life is to make everybody around to behave in way he finds desirable. People always claim to want to be left alone. But it seems they are even more interested in telling others how to live their life. The copulsion seems irresistible

So, a week before Christmas my 4 year old Kenmore washer dies. I take it apart, and diagnose that the transmission is dead, won't agitate. With it being nuts at work and Christmas time, I called the local mom/pop appliance store and ordered a nice high efficiency Maytag. I checked pricing and worked out a nice deal that would end up cheaper with delivery and tax than the big box guys.

Fast forward to last week and the machine goes nuts. It wouldn't do anything and every five minutes would sing to us. I took cell phone video of all this. Two days later the repairman comes out and the POS attempts to start, I show him the video and he said he will order a new control module.

I call yesterday and the part is on national back order. I then asked when would my new machine get delivered. I got a song and dance, etc etc. To get some action, I finally said ok I'll drop off the machine at your front door and dispute the charge on my card. Needless to say they are calling me Monday to see when they will have a new machine. Nothing is ever easy.

Giants vs. Jets. Sometimes it is a familial thing. Also depends on which era you grew up & where you are from. The organizations are completely different too.

My Dad (65) is a JETS fan. He really got into football during the 1960s during the Joe Namath era. The Giants were also terrible for much of the 1960s & 1970s.

I'm a GIANTS fan. I grew up in the '80s watching Phil Symms & LT.

The JETS originally played in Queens. So a lot of Long Islanders are JETS fans.

The Giants used to play in Yankee Stadium, so there are a lot of older (in their 70s, 80s, & 90s) Giants fans in addition to those of us who got into football during the 80s & 90s when the Giants were good.

As a Giants fan, I will root for the Jets as they are a NY team with a very passionate fan base. However, there are Jets fans out there who despise the Giants.

Fezo - I grew up a DIE HARD Mets fan. Loved them in the '80s, lived through the godawful '90s, & rooted for them to destroy the Yankees in the 2000 World Series (they never fully recovered from that loss). In February 2004 a good friend of mine died suddenly at the age of 27. I needed a change in my life & decided to become a Yankees fan. Life is good. Come join the dark side Fezo.

I guess I'm glad I live in the boondocks with no rules. I'd probably end up in jail if I had to live under that kind of control. Maybe it would be different once you got use to it but from what I hear those HOAs attract some pretty nasty control freaks who love giving tickets. So is that what this place is?

Actually, you can get detached houses in lots of places around and do whatever you want to do.

On New Years eve some idiots were shooting off rifles into the air for a so called party and a bullet hit a young kid in the head. Serious injuries but hopefully he will fully recover.

I just think society works better when there are some basic rules, unfortunately there are people around who aren't responsible or considerate of others.

It's really nice that you tried to support local independent businesses but I am wondering if that is always the best policy.

I was checking out alarm companies and there was a local one started 25 years ago by a war veteran. I asked how much and it's $500 for installation and $30 a month. Well, there are lots of national companies that offer free installation and $30 a month.

It's nice to support the local guy but not if it costs a lot more. Sorry your washer didn't work better, Maytags are pretty good usually. That is very aggravating. I would imagine a chain would have got you another one and would have a lot more power to deal with a manufacturer.

"When you are referring to a person shouldn't it be hanged?"

Well, I don't want the poor soul to die; I just want him to suffer a bit. :D Example: "He should be hung and tortured." vs. "He should be hanged by the neck until he is dead." This useage question comes up for debate occassionally. There was an uproar when Saddam Hussein was "hanged" because the news media reported that he was "hung". Many years ago, both words could be used interchangeably. When you and I came through school, the term "hanged' was to be used in the context of killing a person with malice. The term "hung" could be used in an accidental death. Today, we see the term "hung" being used more and more. To be quite honest, your view of the rule is preferred by the experts. You are to be commended for questioning the useage. As for being annoying, I have always enjoyed your smart [non-permissible content removed] comments. :P

"...I'll drop off the machine at your front door and dispute the charge on my card."

Good for you! You were nice enough to purchase from a local dealer. They should have been more aggressive in trying to please you as a customer, considering the competition out there. Hope it works out for you.

    "Nothing is ever easy."

Amen to that one. After our electrician hooked up the new TV, he couldn't figure out how to program the DISH network configuration. I had to call DISH and get them to walk me through a ten minute installation. The receiver for the new TV was at the opposite end of the house supporting TV #1. I had to keep walking back and forth from one end of the house to the other in order to follow the instructions. At least I punched all of the correct buttons on the remote. After all, the DISH technician didn't know who he had on the other end of the phone. :D I started to ask him if there was something that I should yank, but I thought better of it. My poor electrician felt so bad that I had to do all of this. Instead of his usual $50 service call, he only charged me $20 to set it all up and remove the old TV. I gave him $30. He always comes when I call him. In this day and age, that is a nice benefit in itself.

    considering the competition out there

Where I live, I can buy an appliance at probably 50 places in a five mile radius. That isn't an exageration at all (Stick could verify). I chose the closest place to my house, figuring an easy transaction (which it was until the new unit crapped out).

He always comes when I call him. In this day and age, that is a nice benefit in itself.

Yes it is, I hear people talking all the time how repairmen, electricians, etc don't call back or don't show. I guess business is so great these days. :confuse:

driver - that bullet that hit that kid was reported to have likely been shot from miles away. No proof that it couldn't happen in an HOA neighborhood.

I would hate being in a neighborhood even more these days than normal because with my low energy level because of the blood I don't have it in me to do what they'd consider minimum outside work. I don't know if all states work like this but in NJ if you have a handicapped plate or placard, which I do, you can ask the town to paint a handicapped space right in front of your yard. An HOA would have a field day with that.

mako - count me in on Hank Stram. Loved him. He was a great radio announcer after his coaching career. He and Jack Buck used to do Monday Night Football. Turn on the TV with no sound and turn on the radio.

Great players in those days - Len Dawson, Darryl Lamonica, Kenny Stabler, Nolan Smith, Speedy Duncan on teh Chargers..... fun stuff

It certainly has. The new Samsung had been $1,000. Last week, they dropped it to $800. This week, I bought it for $720. If it goes any lower within the next 30 days, they will pay me the difference. Forty years ago, I paid $300 for a new Zenith 17" TV. Comparatively speaking, today's TVs are a real bargain.

Fezo, you are correct. But, I tend to think you wouldn't be as likely to be shooting off a rifle on your front porch if you were in an HOA neighborhood. You would be reported immediately when the first shot went off. Around here every one is home by 8 and in bed by 10.

I don't normally bet but I'll bet $1000 if they catch the guys that shot the rifle they won't be living in an HOA property.

I agree and I remember talking about this with my wife. On the one hand I don't like people telling me what to do but on the other hand I wouldn't want to share a common wall with some meth-head who liked to rev his motorcycle in his living room at 3am.

We've tossed around the idea of the greater freedom of a detached house like we have now vs. The more care-free condo living with the HOA looking over our shoulders. Maybe I'll mellow as we get closer to making up our minds.

Maybe I'll move to your development. You don't mind motorcycle noise at 3am, do you? ;)

Don't be so sure, you're not in Canada any more. The whole gun mind-set is different in Florida.

If you want some fun take a drive across the bay up rt. 19 near Clearwater and visit Knight's Shooting Sports. They have an indoor gun range where you can rent anything from a Glock to a machine gun.

Coming from a state like NY which is close to Canada in it's gun restrictions it was refreshing to meet people who enjoyed shooting in a responsible manner. Not a bunch of hillbilly yahoos at all.

As to where that tragic shot came from, you never know. Many years ago I read about a mysterious shooting in Chicago where a woman was driving along the lake and was somehow shot in the head. The police were baffled until they found out the shot had come from someone a mile out on the lake shooting at cans. The bullet had ricocheted off the water and travel all that way until it entered her car through a partly opened rear window. If the window had been up the bullet would have not had enough energy to kill her. Total fluke accident.

Our HOA just takes care of common areas and have very few other rules.

But, I can paint, put on a new front door, stuff like that without asking.

We have a 15 year deed restriction stating that we cannot change the exterior of the home for any reason. This is because it was new construction and the exteriors people slected were restricted based on what people near them who had bought beofre them had. The builder didn't want houses next to each other to have the same colors and they put that in place to keep someone from changing to a restrcted color right after moving in.

I'm betting the shot wasn't fired from an HOA place. My point is more that banning that doesn't protect you from such things. It could have just as easily landed in a place with such restrictions.

Yes, back home you can't carry a gun with you. Lots of Americans lose their guns when they cross the border.

The one good thing is, I think home invasions are less likely because the bad guys don't know if you are packing or not.

Sure, your motorcycle would be a big hit around these parts. People over 55 have enough trouble sleeping at night without a bike coming in at 3 a.m. If there isn't a rule now, there will be one shortly.

I am sure the board of directors has a rule that doesn't allow bullets entering the grounds, they seem to have a rule for everything else.

Seriously, the rules won't stop the bullet or idiots from having a party and shooting their guns into the air (don't they realize the bullet has to come down at some point), but at least I am pretty sure it won't be one of my neighbors out on his porch shooting off his rifle....and to tell you the truth, I don't want to live next to that guy. So, the rules have more advantages than disadvantages as far as I am concerned, but I truly understand people who don't want rules.

Had plans to go out used BMW shopping this morning. ended up going to the beach to look for a new summer rental, and a side trip to a furniture store to buy a new kitchen set (that remodel just keeps costing!). At least i am keeping some nice Amish people in Ohio busy.

The store was in a wonderful location, just past a car dealer row (VW/audi/bmw/honda/acura/ford and a few others I can't recall). But no stopping there! did swing into a little semi-BHPH lot to look at a couple quick, but that didn't really count.

People over 55 probably wouldn't hear the motorcycle. :D

"Is there a limit to the number of guests who may visit at one time?"

Well, since you can't park on the street, the number of guests would be limited to the number of cars that would fit into your driveway. Last year we gave a large party for a friend's birthday. Our two neighbors across the street were kind enough to "loan" us their circular driveways for the evening. We also encouraged car pooling. The village police here are ruthless.

"that normally applies, but not this time."

That is one of the benefits of so many years of experience. One can apply poetic license (BS) with such style and grace. :shades: ;)

There is no way I could tolerate those Hitler wanna-bes who usually end up running the HOAs. We can't even see another house from our yard. I subscribe to the philosophy that if you can't take a leak in your front yard your neighbors are too close.
