. I was just saying how it was a German-VW that outsold the US-VW.

Which German VW outsold the U.S. VW? If it was the Tourag it's sales doubled but we are only talking 830 cars sold in January.

Not trying to cause a problem, just not sure which models you are referring to.

"...how much should the price of the car be lowered?..."

In my opinion, you should pay the same as you would for a used car with 4000 miles.

I'm sure the dealer will see it differently.

So true. The dealer will be calling it a "new" car since it has never been titled. Of course, if you tried to trade it back in, then it would be a used car.

But, in some ways (financing say, warranty) it acts like a new car.

My WAG would be figure out what the rock bottom best deal you can get on a brand new no miles one, then deduct $.25/mile on this one if you really like it. So, Knock 1K off? It would take at least that much to me (maybe would shoot for 2K) to make it worth while.

The money lost will be made up by the deal that I got on the new property.

I have been thinking about that lately, if you are moving up this is probably a great time to buy. Though the value of your home has gone down, the more expensive house has probably gone down even more.

Some people complain that their $180k house is now worth $120k. But the $400k house is now worth $300k...so you actually benefit from the drop in prices. It's a case of actually making the economy work in your favor.

the owner must remove his house from the market for a specified amount of time.

That was always a little strange. You put in a conditional offer which the seller accepts. If someone comes along and puts in an offer you have first chance to match it. The new bidder has just forced you into buying earlier than you wanted to. Many people won't bother looking at homes with conditional offers, because they are just helping the seller to sell the house.

If Fezo became your chauffeur, he could drive the SRX and convertible for you, and you could give him a room in the basement of the new house.

If you buy a new 2012 Hyundai Genesis that the dealer used and put 4000 miles on it, how much should the price of the car be lowered?

More than what the dealer will reduce it by. When I bought the 2012 535 the shady dealer offered a 2011 demo with 2000 miles for $3000 less than MSRP. That's the discount I would have expected for a new car.

If you bought the car new, drove it off the lot, brought it back, they would probably give you 25% less than you paid for the car....but they won't reduce a demonstrator by that amount.

Since the profit is probably around 8% on a Genesis I would expect a demo to bereduces by at least 6% or $3000 to $4000.

First talk to JMonroe about Gennies though.

    >After buying 14 houses over the years, I outlined my strategy for this deal very carefully.

I think you should have called in HGTV for this. I could see this being a 1 hr program on HGTV about the choice of the home, the crafting of the offer to purchase, the staging of the current home, and the final outcome hopefully being a purchase of the new home. Just think of the royalties they would have to pay every time it aired!!!

Why take a used car? Negotiate and buy a truly new car! Ignore the dealer trying to guide you into unloading a 4000 mile used car at barely below price.

Bluff. If you are thinking you'd save a noticeable dollar amount on the used car, I would think the other way and think that the small amount more per month would be worth it for an actual new car. If you're wanting to save money, look for a Genesis turned in used or off lease. Do any of the rental companies have a Genesis in their fleet? I think for a not new car, a 1-2 year-old car off rental is the best buy if you can verify it's had good maintenance. Remember, a clean CarFAx does NOT mean a car has not had body work done. That same fact holds true for the car which the dealer alledges was used by someone in the dealership family: it may have had body work done that doesn't get reported.

If they see that you are serious about a car that is actually new, they may take off more than 25 or 30 cents per mile. I am not sure why you'd want the used one that someone's wife drove around as their own car, free to them. For me, those first few miles below 5000 - 10000 miles are the prime enjoyment miles of the new car.

Well worth considering. One dealer wanted to sell me a 2011 demo with 2000 miles on it for about $1000 more than I got a brand new 2012 for.

For the small possible savings, you don't even get to choose the color and equipment you really want. I could see buying a demo if you could actually save $4000 or more, but for anything less, it might be better to go new, or actually buy used and pay a real used price. The real savings are on a one or even better two year old car if you really want to save.

It happens every time, whether you are thanking people from a podium or inviting people to a party. Someone gets their feelings hurt by being over looked. You should know by now that I would never hire a staff without including both you and Bolivar. I'll need two domestic engineers---one upstairs and one down. I do think you had a valid point though, that Jetta sales may have maxed out at a certain level. Some people are very upset at the Americanization of the Jetta and Passat, but VW sure is reading the market place very well. Their sales are up substantially. There goal is to be #1 in the world and they might just do it.

Sad isn't it? Gotta love it! Almost 6K a year for a 3 bedroom rancher.

I am currently on a quest for cheaper car insurance. Currently with the Gecko. Just called 21st century and they are higher. Gonna check out Liberty Mutual and maybe one more. $4300 /year with clean driving (Fiance had an accident over 3 years ago). Its really bad, maybe when we get married it will go down. Ha! Spend 35K on wedding to save a few hundred on insurance!

Don't suppose either of you has an in with New Jersey Manufacturer's. Best deal in the state. I pay only a little more than you to insure 4 cars 2 of which have drivers under 25 and just before Christmas they always send me a dividend check for a couple of hundred.

Don't be talking about the bride's family footing the bill! I've got four daughters!

Heck, we did a nice reception with minimal cost 16 years ago. We had friends and relatives do loads of things, rented a fire hall, my SIL baked the cake, my MIL made the dresses, my dad catered it (one rule was that day his crew had to run things and dad had to be part of the party). It was a ball! One of the best receptions if I do say so myself.

Heck, we did a nice reception with minimal cost 16 years ago.

Every one has to do what is best for them. I will say, the Top 5 weddings I have been to were probably the simplest and least expensive. Some were a tent in the backyard. One was at a private club that could be rented out.

Even 10 years ago these weddings would have cost $5000 to $10000.

One of the worst weddings I have been to probably cost about $200,000 or more. The flowers on each table were worth about $1000 and there were about 30 tables. There was a full orchestra and 5 singers in the band. There were food stations for ordoevres, one station for every kind of food, Chinese, Mexican, Indian etc. It was held in a castle, and you had to drive for miles to get to the main building. Guests from out of town had a full steak dinner the night before and a complete breakfast with a chef the next day.

The music was so loud and was aimed at 20 year olds...all the "adults" had to stand outside to have a conversation. You couldn't talk during the meal...unless you could shout.

I am not saying $35k is too much...though it could buy a nice new bmw, but cost is not always a factor in enjoyment level. But, who am I to say....

Thank you, Houdini. I appreciate it.

Fezo, 4 girls.... Better start saving ;)

Driver, I've been in five weddings and attended plenty. All were great affairs because we made them that way regardless of venue. When we were looking the most important thing was the food. I wanted a lot and variety. Our cocktail hour will have multiple stations, pasta, mashed potato, Toscana, and even a street vendor station with mini cheese steaks and roast pork. I had that last one thrown in for free with my super negotiating skills.

Is 35k too much? Maybe, but we are being cost conscious where we can and I am hoping to come in closer to 30/32. I know my cousin's wedding was north of 50! :surprise:
