  • Maybe so, but did you keep your receipt? I don't want Subie permanently off your list, so keep that receipt around in case you want to return the Legacy in a few years :)

If it makes you feel better, Subaru is back to 1.9% financing rate. The 0.9% was short lived, and if my memory is correct, the rate without Subaru subsidizing Chase (Subaru's financing company) is somewhere around 5%. So, that 1.9% was and is still quite good.
  • That's precisely what our Subaru sales rep said regarding rebates. I can't think of a single instance where they've offered a rebate, similar to Honda. Both Subaru and Honda resale values around here are very strong, so perhaps they're right about it being to our advantage as owners.
  • verdugoverdugo Member Posts: 2,288
Damnit, that does it ... Now I find out you did better than I did and Subaru picked my pocket last year.

Sorry. Using driver's patented accounting method, 1.9% interest over 3 years is nothing.
  • verdugoverdugo Member Posts: 2,288
Probably didn't have room to give up an extra point in financing.

These promotional rates are not set by the dealer. They have nothing to do with the price you paid. You can get that 0% rate whether you paid MSRP or dipped into the holdback.

I'm sure that jmonroe got a very good deal anyway. I bet he's jipsters ghost writer for his upcoming sequel. :P
  • jmonroejmonroe Member Posts: 8,989
Not necessarily. It depends on what you actually paid. I have a feeling you got a pretty good discount to begin with on a 2011 in November. Probably didn't have room to give up an extra point in financing.

I think I got a good deal but all of what I got came from the dealer. Since Subaru was not offering a rebate all I got from Subaru was the 1.9% interest rate. Which turned out to be higher than what 'tyguy' got in January on his Subie.

These monthly reminders that we financed a car is new for us but the rate was good at the time. I doubt that Mrs. j will put up with doing this for 36 months since I have already heard her say, "writing these checks are a pain. I hope I don't forget one of these and they come and grab the car while I'm at the mall". :( Since she handles the check book in our house she gets to make that call.

Exactly right...1% might be $200 a year average. Over 3 years it's maybe $15 a month or 50 cents a day. But, I still think, the manufacturer may have given a rebate to the dealer in November on a 2011 model, which could have been $1000 a more.

It's possible JM might have come out better in some ways, especially if he keeps the car for about 8 or 10 years.

they don’t like to discount their cars by giving rebates because that cheapens the product by lowering the trade value down the road.

I think it does work that way. Once they advertise the car at a much lower price it is hard to get people to pay more. Interest rates just aren't has hard to nail down.....no one keeps track of what interest rates were.

OK, since Subie did that, I'll put them back on my list. And yes, I kept my receipt :)

I just got a mailing today from Maritz Reseach because I bought the Legacy, although it is a generic survey and not specific to Subaru or the Legacy. It's a 9 page survey. :surprise: I've heard of J. D. Powell but not these guys but they say they've been around since 1969.

Let me know if you get one of these in a couple months (as everyone here knows, I bought in November 2011 and it just showed up today).

My mom bought a car last August.
She got a survey in the mail early this year.
I was going to throw it out until I saw they would pay $30 for taking the survey.
She doesn't have a computer connected to the internet, so I took the survey for her.
    Basically it went like this:
Did you buy or finance your car?
Thank you for answering. Where do we send the $30? :shades:
2024 Ford F-150 STX, 2023 Ford Explorer ST, 91 Mustang GT vert
  • I'll keep my eye out for that survey. Subaru has sent me two through email already, the first about the dealer, which I immediately filled out and gave them a glowing review. The second was terribly long and I spent 10 minutes filling it out until they asked about my income, which I wasn't about to reveal. It locked me out and wouldn't let me advance, so I cancelled out of that one. Bummer for them.

One other thing to feel good about with your Subie purchase. Your purchase timing meant Subaru donated $250 towards charities. If you were proactive and actually knew about the donation, you could choose all of it to go to one of five charities. If no selection was made, then it was distributed evenly across all five. Nice job Subaru. Not only is their Indiana manufacturing facility a zero-landfill plant, they give up some profits for charities, which they did with your help.

Since you don't pay the bills at your house, you probably don't understand why I don't wish to use debit/credit cards for regular purchases. I have to subtract the debit tickets from the checkbook, keep charge tickets to match up with the credit card bill, write a check for the credit card bill each month, etc. It's just easier for me to pay cash. Each Monday morning, we begin the week with $500 in cash. That cash is used for groceries, dry cleaning, gas, car washes, restaurants, etc. If any of it is left over at the end of the week, it goes into savings. Having the cash handy saves using cards or writing checks. It's just my way of handling money, and it works for me. As for standing in line, we all do plenty of that regardless of whether we use debit/credit cards or cash. Even at gas stations, we have to wait for a pump at times.

Subaru may have been unloading 2011’s in November 2011 but I bought a 2012 in November of 2011 so all I got from Subaru was the 1.9% that they were offering at the time, plus, what I think was a good deal on the Legacy from the dealer.

As far as keeping cars for 8 or 10 years, at one point in my life when I was raising a family that was my MO but I’ve gotten away from that since I bought the ’05 XG350 in April of 2005. Since then I’ve had an ’06 Sonata (traded in for the Genny) an ’09 Genny and now the ’12 Legacy.
Just last night when I was on this board Mrs. jmonroe asked what I did when I’m on this site. I said, “nothing much, just listening to some guys talking about cars they are planning to get. Stuff like that and to see if there are any good deals out there to be had on new cars”. She said, “WHAT, we’re not getting anymore new cars. :( We’re done. Repeat after me, WE ARE NOT GETTING ANYMORE CARS, RIGHT”? I said, “is that a question or a statement”? She said, “YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN”.

That’s what happens when I try to have a car discussion with her.

I think you’re running us Subie owners together. I don’t think ‘tyguy’ (the nice Subie owner) said anything to you about paying cash for purchases vs. using a credit card. I’m the Subie guy that made that comment.

You’re right, I don’t pay the bills at our house so I can get away with not having to fumble through all those receipts to make things even out when it’s time to pay up for the convenience of using a credit card. However, Mrs. jmonroe likes it this way better than having to get a wad of cash to start off the week like you do. We’ve been there and done that. So we’re making good use of these modern times and don’t plan to go back to cash. BTW, what is that stuff anyhow? :confuse:

Ah! Now see I charge everything I can on a credit card with a cash back deal. When the bill comes I already have it set up to pay the balance in full on the day that it is due. I have a little savings account for travel money. It goes in there and has been growing pretty nicely. Next time we do Disney it will pay for all the tickets.

Newfoundland declares war on the U.S.A.

President Barack Obama was in the Oval Office when his telephone rang.

"Hallo, President Obama " a heavily accented voice said. "This is Archie, up ere at the Harp Seal Pub in Badger's Cove , Newfoundland , Canada , he? I am callin' to tells ya dat we are officially declaring war on ya!"

"Well Archie," Barack replied, "This is indeed important news !
How big is your army ?"

"Right now," said Archie, after a moments calculation "there is myself, me cousin Harold , me next-door-neighbor Mick, and the whole dart team from the pub. That makes eight!"

Barack paused. "I must tell you Archie that I have one million men in my army waiting to move on my command."

"Wow," said Archie. "I'll have at call ya back!"

Sure enough, the next day, Archie called again. " Mr. Obama , the war is still on! We have managed to acquire some infantry equipment!"

"And what equipment would that be Archie?" Barack asked.

"Well sir, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and Harry 's farm tractor."

President Obama sighed. "I must tell you Archie, that I have 16,000 tanks and 14,000 armored personnel carriers. Also I've increased my army to one and a half million since we last spoke."

"Lord above", said Archie, "I'll be getting back to ya."

Sure enough, Archie rang again the next day.. " President Obama , the war is still on! We have managed to git ourselves airborne! We up an' modified Harrigan's ultra-light wit a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, and four boys from the Legion have joined us as well!"

Barack was silent for a minute then cleared his throat. "I must tell you Archie that I have 10,000 bombers and 20,000 fighter planes. My military complex is surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites. And since we last spoke, I've increased my army to TWO MILLION!"

"Jumpins," said Archie, "l'll have at call youse back."

Sure enough, Archie called again the next day. " President Obama ! I am sorry to have to tell you dat we have had to call off dis 'ere war."

"I'm sorry to hear that" said Barack . "Why the sudden change of heart?"

Well, sir," said Archie, "we've all sat ourselves down and had a long chat over a bunch of pints, and come to realize dat dere's no way we can feed two million prisoners.."

Subaru may have been unloading 2011’s in November 2011 but I bought a 2012 in November of 2011 so all I got from Subaru was the 1.9%

I didn't think about it but I didn't realize you had sprung for a 2012. Way to go, you may not have saved a few dollars up front but the car will be worth a lot more at trade in time....smart move.

The best month to buy a car is December, but look at how much discounts vary just in one month:
Best Days to Buy in December

    Date

    Expected Average
    Discount

    12/14/2009
    6.86%

    12/16/2009
    6.74%

    12/21/2009
    7.13%

    12/24/2009
    7.25%

    12/28/2009
    6.90%

    12/31/2009
    7.04%

So there are lots of variables for that extra 1%, so it is best not to lose sleep over it.

Or maybe you are like me, I always miss out on any extras I could have got, by buying too late or too early....no matter what, I just accept it that I am not going to be on the winning side of one of these deals.

Next time we do Disney it will pay for all the tickets.

As much as we put on our credit card each month we still won’t be able to do that. We’re going to Disney World in May with Son #1, his wife and their 3 sons. Just finalized the arrangements 2 days ago. Son #2 decided he’ll hold off for a year or two until his now 3 year old daughter is old enough that she doesn’t get worn out with all the walking that you have to do there. Hell, nobody was concerned about me getting worn out. They just told me, “we’re going”. That will not be a relaxing vacation like going to Myrtle Beach like we’ve done the last few years but it should be nice.

The kids are excited. You wouldn’t believe the routine they went through about telling the kids where they are going for vacation this year. So I’m told, they actually have sites that suggest ways for parents on how to break the news to their kids about going there. :confuse:

To be fair putting that much away from credit card cash back took a few years. During that time we charge groceries, gas - pretty much everything.

Of course I get another year to save such things as I'm not terribly likely to be going anywhere this year.

I didn't get you confused with Tyguy. I think that Edmunds did that. I'm pretty sure that I hit your name for the reply. As for getting "a wad of cash to start off the week", it's no problem. We just take it from the safe that contains a three month supply for daily living. I suppose that it is a hold over from the Great Depression experienced by my parents. They always kept some cash on hand in case the banks failed again. Considering the current status of the financial world, I'm prone to believe that they had a good idea. I don't want to experience what my grandfather did in October of 1929. He rushed to the bank only to find the doors chained with padlocks. He lost his business, his stocks, etc. How he held on to his house is a story that is just short of a miracle.

That's part of the reason why I keep more cash around - it's a big pain to go to ANY ATM here, and it's a good 10 miles to the nearest ATM for my bank (to avoid the fees).

"...the kids were finding cash stashed all over the place."

When my mother passed away, her Will noted that her collection of beautiful leather handbags was to go to my wife. It was a gesture more lovely than we thought. Each handbag contained cash in the zipper compartment. She also had a collection of oriental and domestic flower vases which was left to my sister. Each vase contained cash. She left me all of the framed pictures in the house. I had them in boxes out in our garage. After my wife discovered cash in the handbags, I figured that I had better look at the pictures. There it was behind the back covers of the pictures---cash. Since my father, and later my mother, were both in nursing homes for two years each, we thought that all of the money was gone. Leave it to Mom---always some cash on hand.

It may be too late for Fezo to look in the safe. I met with my CPA today to have my 2011 taxes done. It is quite apparent that Uncle Sam shows no mercy for the elderly. Each month we give him a chunk of our Social Security checks and still the SOB wants more cash. I'm getting a little sick of keeping the rest of the world in food, clothing, and shelter. It's a sad day when you find out that the interest on your investments caused you to owe Uncle Sam more money. Like Old Farmer, I would do better putting my money in a coffee can and burying it in the yard. For over 50 years, I worked and paid taxes. They can't take the taxes out if you don't make the money.

And they can’t tax you if your income is not reported.

I had my eyes opened to that way back in the 80’s when a friend told me about a small family business that his father started about 10 years before his father died. His father was told by the people he did business with that he should do as they do, “do almost all of your business in cash. Do just enough record keeping to show that your business is profitable and everything else in cash”. My friend said he knew something was going on but until he asked his father why he kept so much money in his house (well over $40K) and was always going to his safety deposit box and getting bigger ones all the time he had no idea what was going on. At one point he thought his father was gambling but he ruled that out because he never did that before. When he finally confronted his father about this his father said that he had played by the rules all his life before he started his small business and went on to say, “I’m tired of carrying people. That is for the younger generation, I’VE HAD ENOUGH”.

I’m not condoning this and I know it’s not legal, and they will come down hard on you if you’re caught, but I understand this is the way a LOT of mom/pop businesses operate.

That is true. I can't tell you how many times that someone who was hired to do small labor around the house would charge less if we paid in cash. Paint touch ups, window washing, yard work, etc.

I wonder how much of that tax revenue would be recouped if we dumped our stupid system (stupid for tax payers-essential for politicians) and went to a nat'l sales tax?

I don't condone it either, but I can understand it. Nyccarguy said that they couldn't take out the taxes if you didn't make the money. The thing about Social Security is that I allowed them to hold that money for many years while I continued to pay taxes on what I earned. They earned the interest on it and then changed the law so that they could spend my money on paying their bills. To have to give them a chunk of it now seems ridiculous. They also benefited from those who died before they ever began to draw Social Security. If the system is in trouble, they only have themselves to blame. As for taxes, i always expected to pay them. I was glad to pay in return for public services such as military and police protection, fire security, public roads and streets, etc. I didn't even mind helping the truly poor who were down on their luck. In later years, helping the poor turned into one tremendous entitlement system. That's when I began resenting where my tax dollars were going. As the old saying goes, two things are for sure---death and taxes.
