2. Kia offers me $25 to test drive an Optima. Son and I show up on Tuesday afternoon. Another very nice salesman, who brings around an SX Turbo. He takes us on a long route and soon figures out that I'm a gearhead. Turns out he's been working at the dealer for @2 months and is trying to learn about some of the more technical issues. For the rest of the test drive I answer questions about direct injection, sequential gearboxes, service intervals- you name it. Again, he knows I'm not a serious buyer but that doesn't seem to matter. My son mentions that he likes the Forte Koup[sic] and the sales guy offers us one for the weekend. In all seriousness that car may be an option when he heads to college. Two problems 1. He wants an SX with a stick and without leather or a hole in the roof(bless his heart!). 2. EVERY car has a $3990 mop and glow sticker on it, and I didn't ask how set in stone that add-on is. As for the Optima itself, I was EXTREMELY impressed. Gorgeous interior, comfortable seats, decent sound system, and almost quick. It's no sports sedan, but I'd put it right up there with the Mazda 6 as a top choice for the intermediate sedan class. The Mazdaspeed is my first and last FWD car, but I'll certainly recommend potential shoppers to check it out.
3. My BMW dealer had a reception to introduce the F30 3 Series. First Class as usual- valet parking, open bar, all manner of hors d'oeuvres, and a raffle for an iPad3. The new 3er is an attractive piece, but my thoughts were straying to a 2011 135i M Sport over in the Pre-Owned lot.
Pathetic story of the evening: I'm looking at 328i Sport and a salesman asks me what I think. I tell him that it's nice, but that it is missing a pedal(the car has a slushbox). A guy standing next to him says "I like automatics- I want to get in the car and not have to do anything." I told him that if I can't take the car on the track I'm not buying it- and the guy replies, "I'd never take my car to the track; especially after I spent three hours washing it." My son laughed about "The Dork" for the rest of the evening, but all I could do was silently pray: "Dear Lord, deliver the BMW marque from all poseurs. Cast them all into the Lake of Fire- or even worse, make them drive an Aveo or Yaris for all Eternity."

I don't understand. You have a 'problem' because a dealer is offering a big discount????
There was one engineer that did that all the time. But when he listened he was great...
That sounds like a young/er engineer that was still trying to knock the dust off of his slide rule. When you are involved with commercial products form does not always have to follow function to the nth degree but in dealing with industrial stuff that involves safety, you have to follow the old
adage.

Oh yeh, I would rather buy from a dealer who gives me a real price right from the top....like my new BMW dealer.....they took 4% off. Dealers make 8% so 4% is realistic....allows my dealer to make a profit and stay in business.
Why would a dealer take $3000 off the price of a $25000 car...over 10% unless they have a scam going on? Oh, I'll email them in August and get an out of the door price, but I expect whatever number I get, it won't come to $3000 off, especially on a car that is selling so well.
One of the reviews I read said the dealer switched finance companies on the final contract and changed the number so the cost of borrowing was more.
A big part of their online ads is plugging in the cost to get a monthly payment.
Like I said, I will check them out, but my guard will be up.

My local dealer (in NJ) is enormous. The building looks like a shopping mall (2 levels with cars on it, probably over a dozen inside), and there is a sea of cars in the huge parking lot. No way hard-core drivers/track people are supporting that operation (besides, you are all too cheap to buy new anyway!)
as to test drives, I got another solicitation from Toyota in the mail yesterday. Guess they haven't figured out that I used (and submitted) the last one! too bad the fine print says 1 per household.
I never drove an Optima, but sat in one a few times, and was really impressed. Makes sense you would like the seats, since many people complain they are too "firm". I thought they felt nice and supportive like a German car.

So you’re just figuring that out now, are you? I usually am but I’ve been told over the years that the approach I use is hard for some people to grasp right away. They only hear the tone but not the content. :surprise:
Hey JM, do you write up wills too by any chance?
No I haven’t done any of those, although I can give you a few pointers on how to discourage a fellow poster from trying to horn in on them.

"My brother, Steve LaSala, was diagnosed in 2006 with myleodyspalsia (MDS). MDS is a disease of the bone marrow. In earlier days it was called pre-leukemia because it can indeed turn into a deadly leukemia over time. Fortunately, treatment has improved over the last few years and Steve is still with us six years after his diagnosis.
So far, Steve has received chemotherapy which, although not a cure for MDS, slows its progress. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant.
In late March, Steve entered Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to begin the process of a bone marrow transplant. He will be in isolation for at least three months because they have to destroy his immune system before the transplant can be done. This is high risk, but his prognosis is good. He’ll be at Sloan for a month or more. From there he will be staying at nearby Hope Lodge and commuting to Sloan Kettering as an outpatient. He will not be able to return home until late July.
Steve and his wife Jennifer have four children, ages 10 to 23. The costs associated with this procedure and recovery are enormous. I am writing all my friends and associates to ask that you donate whatever you can to help out.
We are holding a Concert/Fundraiser on May 12. The flier is on the other side of this note. We are hoping to have many sponsors contribute to the success of this event. There will be a Sponsor Recognition Board for all who donate $100 or more. Major sponsors as detailed below will have special signs or banners to acknowledge their generosity.
There will also be a silent Auction of a hand made Stagnitto acoustic guitar worth $2,000. It is similar to a Martin Orchestra model with all solid woods, great action and lovely tone. Details are available on request. Bids will be accepted by mail. Winner will be chosen at the event May 12.
Your donations and prayers are all greatly appreciated. I am deeply grateful for any consideration you can give this humble request. I and my entire family thank you.

This sounds very familiar. When I traded Mrs. jmonroe’s ’06 Sonata LX with 13K miles for the Genny in March of ’09 I saw similar looks. You still have some time. If you work this right, like I did, you will have her thinking this was her idea and you were just an innocent bystander.

As for the Optima itself, I was EXTREMELY impressed. Gorgeous interior, comfortable seats, decent sound system, and almost quick. It's no sports sedan, but I'd put it right up there with the Mazda 6 as a top choice for the intermediate sedan class.
When the XG350 blew up we looked at the Optima but I didn’t drive it because it was getting late and they didn’t have the one I’d be interested in color wise and another option. I agree with everything you say. It’s a very nice car. I did, however, drive its clone the Sonata Turbo the following Saturday, and the turbo is one nice engine alright. Even Son #1 was impressed with that car. I’m pretty sure the Optima has the same engine. If it wasn’t for what Hyundai did to me I would not have a problem getting one of those.
About three weeks ago I got a call from the salesman that gave us the test drive of the Sonata Turbo which is the same Hyundai store that wouldn’t stand behind me because of my “oil log discrepancy”. The guy said they wanted to make it up to me. I seem to be pretty well known there as a result of the shafting they gave me. Goes on to say that they will do almost anything to “get me into a Sonata Turbo”. Well, they’re about 5 months too late and I told him that.
I’m trying to put 2 + 2 together so I think I got this call because of a woman I work with and one other guy here who were looking at Sonata’s there told them they would not buy from them because of what they did to me. I knew the woman told them that when she got a follow up call but I didn’t know that the guy also got a follow up call to see if he was still interested until I talked to him after I got the call I’m talking about. So this might be getting to them. Like I said, I’m trying to figure it out but my reasoning makes more sense to me than why he said he called.
I hope this is only the tip of the iceberg.

I do research on some of the VW dealers in the area and there are lots of sites that will allow you to write a review of a dealer.
Edmunds is a good place to start. You can write a review and copy and paste it on another site. One can do a lot of damage to a dealer. I have to take some reviews with a grain of salt because the buyer doesn't always seem that reliable.
Here is one on Edmunds of the VW dealer who discounts $3000....
Recommend this dealer? No Purchased a vehicle from this dealer? No, Poor experience with dealer personnel
Do not buy from this location. Larry the Sales Manager will not sell you a car at a fair price just because he made his sales quota for the month. No to mention when I call back for further clarification Kathy ( the pathetic secretary) hung up the phone every time I simply asked for Larry.
He goes on to explain more....the problem could be this guy, but they had other bad reviews. I suppose people are more inclined to write bad reviews. There were also many excellent reviews.
But, you could reach a lot of people with your story.

Review your vehicle
I think you are probably right. And many of the positive reviews are very complimentary with very good information.
Many of the bad reviews are from people who are bitter because they couldn't get the car they couldn't really afford, or such matters.
The reviews are very useful, but you have to read between the lines. In the case of this dealer I was using as an example, there were more positive reviews, and the people who gave those views seemed much more coherent than the negative reviewers.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
It’s because of this that I won’t write a negative review on this site or any other because the perception is that people complain more than they praise. So I think much of this falls on deaf ears. I don’t believe half the negative reviews that I see and most are so poorly written that pretty much tells me all I have to know about the person complaining.
For the dealer that I was talking about I like the one on one conversations that my fellow employees had with their salesman. They got there point across and it seems like the GM heard about it too.
I have given praise in retail stores a couple of times and the manager always seems shocked because all he ever hears from are the complainers. It’s nice to know that I’m remembered in these stores because a couple times the manager has recognized me and came over and asked, “is everything all right” when I say “yes” I hear, “thanks, if it isn’t let me know”.
For years at worked I’ve told people kiddingly, “if you like what I’ve done tell my boss, if not tell me. Maybe I can explain it better”. A few new people have taken me seriously over the years and went to my boss. The boss once said, “man, you’re sure getting some mileage out of that line, huh”. I don’t think that ever affected my performance review, though.
I don’t know how much money Hyundai or the dealer makes on a car sale but I think between the two of them, on the two lost sales that I’m aware of; they lost more than the $3K that I lost because I sold the XG350 with a blown engine. Will this put either of them out of business? Hell no, but I’m at least getting a little satisfaction out of it.

I think that if you copied your original story from your Edmunds Post it would come across as being written by someone who is in full control of their faculties.
No, but it is sensibly written and a normal person can see that you had a real problem and are just telling a story that most people would see from your perspective.
It isn't your thing to write such a post though...on another site, which is fair enough. If it was me, I would do it for sure. I'd probably put a big sign on my car and park it in front of the dealership. You know how I hate to lose at these things.

I was on one side of the aisle looking for crab cakes. there were displays down the centre of the aisle so it made it narrow on each side. My wife was on the opposite side, she had the grocery cart, and she had the frozen food door open to get an item.
This b---h came down the aisle and said as she passed my wife "Why do some people have to take up a whole aisle to get their food?".
I thought I caught what she said but I had to ask my wife to make sure I heard correctly....and I did. I would have told her she 'Could use a little exercise by walking around the display in the middle of the aisle...it would do her some good", but my wife is a family therapist by trade and would say it is just better to let people like that go!

This is what happened to me in a supermarket about 7 years ago or so:
The aisle was not that narrow but there were two shopping carts side by side on the opposite side that I was going down. There was a woman backed up to about 2 feet from one of the carts which put her about 6 feet from the shelves on my side and she was just staring at the shelves. I said, “excuse me” twice but got no response. I saw someone coming up behind me so I said excuse me again as I went in front of her. That got her attention and she blurts out, “can’t you see that I’m reading one of the cans”? That lady had to ace all of her eye exams. Her vision must be better than an astronauts because there is no way a normal person could read a can from that distance, I know I couldn’t. OK, I’m not letting that go by so I said, “couldn’t you hear me asking to get by”? She said, “yeah, I heard you. What do you think I am, a speed reader or something”? The woman with the cart behind me cracked up and as she passed by me, still laughing, she said, “I bet you’re not going to walk in front of a slow reader again are ya”?
I’ve always said that if you want to see a good cross section of the public, go to a grocery store.

Got a call from Mrs. j late yesterday afternoon. I could tell right away that she was upset.
Mrs. j: I don’t believe this. Guess what happened now?
Me: OK, I give up what”?
Mrs. j: I come out of Target and my windshield is cracked.
Me: Do you remember hearing it get hit by something. It didn’t have to be today but how about, say a week ago?
Mrs. j: No.
Me: Not much we can do about it so we have to get it replaced. From what you’re telling me it can’t be repaired. We’ll have to pay $100 because that’s our comprehensive deductible.
Mrs. j: GREAT.
She left the car in the driveway so I could see it when I got home. It’s a real crack, at least 8 inches long. The car doesn’t even have 2K miles on it and it’s been hit by a shopping cart and now a broken windshield. Things come in 3’s so I wonder what’s next.
If I was one to believe in jinxes this would be the perfect time to call the Hyundai salesman to see just how badly he wants to put me into a Sonata Turbo.
As I’m writing this post Mrs. j called to tell me that the auto glass place will be out later today to replace the windshield in our driveway. Man, those guys are quick. I just called my insurance company not even an hour ago to report it and the woman said she would have someone from the auto glass company call to set up an appointment to have it replaced. I told Mrs. j to expect a call in a few days maybe even sometime today. But I wasn’t expecting them to come out today to replace it. :surprise:

So far, the Sube sounds like my 1998 (or was it a '99?) Quest. Shortly after we bought it, we got hit by a shopping cart. And at about 6 months old, got hit by a rock kicked up on the highway, which quickly turned into a major crack leading to a new windshield.
Good news for you, that was about it for calamities with that car.
Oh, almost had an even bigger problem. When it was about 2 days old, we heard a huge noise in the garage. Went out to find out that one of the door springs let go (on the side the van was parked). This was before safety cables, so the spring was just swinging back and forth, about 3" from the van. Missed it completely, thank goodness, because that baby would have done some serious damage if it had hit the van when it snapped.

When the auto glass company called he conferenced in the insurance company (not the agent) and the two of them asked a few questions that Mrs. j answered. Then the guy from the glass outfit said because the car is new they had the windshield in stock otherwise it would have taken maybe a week. I’d be willing to bet that the windshield in the Legacy probably hasn’t changed for a few years anyway.

The Titanium Silver Paint really shows off the car's sexy lines. I love the short over hangs and how the 17" wheels fill out the wells. This design is going to stand the test of time quite well. The car is simply gorgeous!
The interior fit and finish are superb. Excellent, high quality materials are all over the place. Seats are firm and comfortable.
I've always thought my Acura TSX drove nicely. This car just simply blows it out of the water. Steering is tight and precise. I love the taut suspension tuning too. The body barely moves at all over expansion joints.
I haven't even begun to push the car at all, but driving a car RWD car just feels perfect.
The panel gap between the hood and right front 1/4 panel is a little bigger than on the left side. Since it is a lease, I'm not sure if I should complain or not to get it fixed.
My appointment was for 6:00 pm. Traffic was murderous, so i called the salesman and told him I'm running a few minutes late. I said I'd be there by 6:30 the latest. Pulled in at 6:15. Took the car seats and personal effects from my TSX, went over the car with him, paired our phones, and waited. Apparently the F & I guy was majorly backed up. He kept telling us: "Not that much longer." Well, not that much longer turned into 8:15 pm. I'm there with my wife, 3 kids (5,3, 4 months), and my parents. My kids were superbly behaved. Their bedtime is usually 8:00 and the dealer is 45 minutes away from my house. My wife and I were literally famished. I wish they would've just told us that its going to be another hour, so we could've gone out to dinner. The F & I guy asked me if I wanted to buy tire & wheel insurance for $1372. No thanks.

I think so too, because JMs story is just a factual account of what happened. If I was considering buying a car from that dealer I would really want to know about his experience.
Some guy might rant because he bought a car as is and then it falls apart when he leaves the lot. Or another one wanted a more expensive model and the salesman tried to steer him into a lower price car.....when he was already upside down on the trade in.......salesman was trying to help but the guy didn't like that. Those are the posts I ignore, but a good factual account means a lot. When JM tells people at work he may influence 4 or 5 people, when he goes online he will influence 100s.

We had to wait for the F&I guy too, and although it is annoying, what can you do? I mean they can't help it if more people than expected are picking up their cars. I didn't mention it in my survey report because I think they tried to do the best they could, but that part of the transaction isn't an exact science.

I was looking at the new Mitsu the i-miev or something like that. It has only a 62 mile range but my daily comute is only 48 miles so it might make a good going to work car.
I can't see myself buying a car like that and getting stuck replacing the batteries but maybe a lease would do the trick. I drive less than 10,000 miles a year with my current commuter so I might be able to get a lower cost deal on a 3 year/8000 mile lease.
Trouble is, I can't find any info on monthly lease rates for this car. Do any of you experts have any lease figures for the Mitsu or the Nissan Leaf? I found one refference to a $1700/mo cost which if true would change my mind real fast.

Wait, this is in Canada? Or are you back south again? If you are back in Florida just shake your head and mutter "Yankees". Everyone else in the store will be on your side right away.
If they're acting like that up in the great white north then the world is indeed doomed.

Could you expand on that a little? Are you judging it from a trackability viewpoint or was there something else it lacked?
