And the first thing you do is post to your Edmunds buddies? I hope your new bride is the understanding type. :P
As to the car repairs, they included an oil change, some battery cables and a tire repair. Yeah, $1100 isn't too bad for a year's worth of repairs on 4 vehicles, two of which were built when Reagan was president.

I was concerned about the week of work _followed_ by a honeymoon. It's supposed to be the other way around.

tjc, For a moment there I thought you were going to say that your bride was totally exhausted from an evening of connubial bliss. But then again, that is what the honeymoon is for. Once again congratulations, and welcome to the club of happily married men.
I want to extend my best wishes and glad to hear that you and your family had a grand time at your father's "surprise" birthday party. Was he really surprised or did he have an inkling that something big was going down? Such wise old men always know even if they pretend otherwise.
This summer I was at a 90th. birthday party and the guy danced all night until 1:00 AM. He was surrounded by his friends (mostly in their 70s and 80s) and by a cadre of grand and great grand children. The guy's mind was sharp recalling vividly every decade of his life without ever halting his speech or searching for words.
Back in 98 my dad took the whole family, 5 sons and at the time 8 grandchildren down for a week at Disney. We were only missing my mom who was on her long slide out with dementia and it just wasn't doable. What a great time! The various cousins probably were never so involved with each other than on that weekend. A few years later we did a scaled down version in Williamsburg.
By the time dad hit 90 he wasn't leaving teh house so we brought the party to him and he had a great time.
Work is going to be tough this week, no doubt about it.
Thanks everyone!

We got married on a Saturday and took off for the honeymoon on Monday. We drove so there was no worries about when the boat was leaving.
Yes, he was really surprised. I told him I was taking him to Morton's for dinner for his birthday - we entered but when they opened the doors to the private room, everyone yelled "surprise"! He hadn't seen his great grandchildren in several years. We gave him a picture that was taken earlier in the day by a photographer that had all 9 great grandchildren and 5 grandchildren in a group picture. He said he will cherish that picture for the rest of his life.

Mike, all the best celebrating your fathers 90th. That is quite an accomplishment, and you deserve so much credit for helping him and making his life more enjoyable.
And congratulations to me, my wife's mother just turned had her 100th birthday today. We had a nice party with about 60 people, ......grandchildren and great grandchildren came from all over the country.

Thanks, *driver, and congrats to your mother-in-law.
An interesting bit of info regarding the cars my family drives, which I knew nothing about until last night during our discussions:
My nephew the doctor drives an E350 Benz Sedan
My nephew the lawyer and company CEO drives a CLS 550 Benz
My twin brother drives an CL 550 Benz
My niece and her husband drive an E350 Benz Convertible
I was aware of my brother's new CL550, but did not know everyone else drove Mercedes Benz vehicles. I guess we're all either psychic or were brought up with great respect for Mercedes - I believe the latter to be true!

First, thanks for the good wishes.
That is really amazing that a neice, nephews, and your brother drive Mercedes. Sometimes, car types do run in families, my wife's family mostly drove Volvos...but that is changing with new generations who have less allegiance to a make.
What did your father drive? More important probably, what did your grandfather drive(since this trait has been passed on through siblings)? If that doesn't give us an answer then it is probably an appreciation for fine machinery or art, or even fine watches. I think this explains partly why you weren't comfortable with the Lexus...and some how you traded it in just in time.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
My Dad drove Cadillacs, Lexus's and Infinitis. He never owned a Benz. My grandfather on my mother's side drove Oldsmobiles and my dad's dad drove Studebakers.
Even more interesting was that all the men in the family wore Rolex watches, as you mentioned.
Yes I traded that Lexus just in time - they already have a recall on them!

There's something going on here. Could there be a grandmother who insisted on buying only the finest quality items?
It could be like those stories about twins, they get separated and don't see each other until they are grown adults. But, they both are accountants, they both have 2 kids, they both drive the same cars......spooky!
If you had the Lexus you would be the outcast in the family.
I had a friend who lived down the street from me when growing up. I hadn't seen him for 40 years. Then we meet up by accident, both have 2008 bmw Cabriolets, he has coffee with 2 milks. We both play tennis a lot (he started when we were kids, I didn't start until 18 years after I last saw him), we both started our ownsuccessful businesses. Now we get together once a week, but life can be weird at times.

That was a bad call, and Yankees lost on September 9th because of a bad call.
Batter clearly got to first but was called out in a game against the Orioles.
Runner is called out-clearly gets to first
In tennis they use replays to see if the ball is out or not. Sometimes the referees miss lots of calls, sometimes they are very good.
In this day and age calls should be replayed. The equipment is there to do it, and humans just aren't perfect. Sometimes the human eye just misses what actually happened.

I guess you are a man of your word. You’ve been threatening us for a while now that you were going to do this. A BIG congrats. Now don’t mess it up. We’re watching.
The entire day went off with only the tiniest detail needing attention.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, we went to a very formal wedding for my cousin’s oldest daughter. Don’t get me wrong, it was a very nice affair but because it was this type of a wedding, they had several planners to help pull it off and they were competing for who did their part the best. The couple had to stand here first then stand there then they had to wait until the next guy got in his two cent worth, etc. etc. To the point where the guests were saying, "why don't they leave them alone already". Like I said it was nice but they made it more of a production than a wedding. Who knows, one of those planners might get an Emmy for their part.
Glad yours went well. While going through life remember the KISS principle and when something goes off course a little, and it will, a couple of those will help get the boat back in calm waters.
Have a happy life.

I disagree. Baseball is one game that should not use replays. Mistakes are part of the game and those mistakes go both ways.
mmmm, a purist. Just me, but, I think if you can use technology to improve life, even sports, then it should be used. It doesn't intrude or take away from the game, and it actually adds to the game, because then you don't have idiotic calls influencing the outcome of a game.
Using electronic devices helps in horse racing, hockey and tennis to name a few, and it is all for the good - I don't think anyone would argue it wasn't for the better.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
If the technology is so good, then baseball should just eliminate the umpires and have the game called by a couple of officials in the press box. But that will never happen because it would lengthen the game.
The technology is good enough for the NFL and other sports. So I don’t know why it isn’t good enough for MLB. Nobody wants to see the team they root for being robbed because of a bad call. I don’t want to see a bad call affecting any game whether I have a dog in the fight or I am just watching the game.
I’m going to get off the baseball topic here and mention my pet peeve about football. I don’t like the rule that it is a touchdown by merely reaching the ball across the goal line vs. carrying the ball into the end zone. And while I’m at it, I don’t like the rule that “the ground cannot cause a fumble”. As far as I’m concerned, if you can hit a guy hard enough that when he hits the ground he loses the ball, you should get the reward for making that hit. I guess my days of playing linebacker are showing.
Rant over.

The one time I would have loved instant replay was the Immaculate Reception. By the rules at the time it was not a catch (by today's rules it would be). No live ref was going to call it right in front of a house full of Steeler fans for fears of becoming a dead ref very quickly.
I'm a Timex man myself. I tried to get a new band put on my old faithful watch that I've had for about 15 years but the case was so rusted they couldn't get the new band attached.
Reluctantly, I dug deep and came up with the $10.88 for a new one. Using the driver100 method that's almost $.73 a year. I hope it's worth it.

As I’ve mentioned before, I was at the Immaculate Reception game. I agree that at the time, the rule was that 2 offensive players could not touch the ball in succession but I have yet to see a replay that definitively shows Frenchy Fuqua touching the ball first.
That bit about the refs not wanting to make the call that a Steelers player touched the ball first, for fear of their safety, is a good tale that was started by John Madden and it has gotten a lot of mileage over the years.
If the call had been made in favor of the Raiders, I would have helped Madden and his team fend off drunken Steelers fans.

I'd probably debate that point. Having just seen calls in the Green Bay/Seattle game and Notre Dame/Stanford game where replay showed that a reversal was in order, but where the instant replay ref either because of incompetence or intimidation (fear of going against the home team) failed to correct the call. I had no axe to grind in either game.
If this is what we can expect from the thoughtful application of technology we might as well just let them play with no technological interference. If you are a Detroit fan you probably can't help feeling that this is Karma for the blown call in the perfect game a year or so ago.

I know what you mean. I like reliable time pieces myself so that is my daily watch.
When we go someplace special, like the wedding we went to on Saturday night, Mrs. j always says, “now don’t wear that piece of junk you wear every day. Wear your nice watch”. I listen to all orders (‘tjc’ are you listening) so I wore my “nice” watch. While at the dinner table one of the guests that I was seated next to (nice guy but I never met him before) says to me, “my watch stopped working, would you happen to have the time”? I pull up my sleeve and gave him the time. His wife says, “what a nice watch. Is that a Rolex? That’s what my husband has and there is always something going wrong with his”. Mrs. j laughs and says, “no, I don’t think so. He’s too cheap to buy one of those”. Now the truth comes out and they admit that it’s a knock-off. Then the guy’s wife turns on him and says find out what kind of watch he has. It’s as nice as the one you have and at least his works”.
The guy then follows his orders and asks me. So, I had to pull back my sleeve again to find out what brand it was and I told him, “it’s a Pulsar. It’s at least 20 years old and I don’t even know if they make watches anymore”. His wife sends out another order to him saying, “when we get home, go online and see if they still make watches”. He said, “when we get home I’m going to bed. I’m not going to look for any watches”. I didn’t blame him it was past 10 PM and we were still eating dinner. His wife said, “OK, then do it first thing tomorrow morning”. I don’t know if he would have caved if she was insistent on doing it when they got home so I never found out who wore the pants in his family. I know who wears them in mine (‘tjc’ are you still here).

I haven’t seen the replay of the Notre Dame/Stanford game yet but from what I heard, it was hard to tell about that play. Now, the Green Bay/Seattle game is another story. It’s uncanny how the most obvious plays are screwed up.
I can’t argue that if they can’t use the technology to overturn the most obvious of calls that can reverse a bad call on the field, they might as well turn out the lights in the review booth.

And, I have my "humble" watch. I was about 21 years old working for Sears, making around 3.00/hr and newly married.
I needed a watch so I headed to the watch department where for around 20.00 I picked out a nice Timex. At the time Sears had a program where an employee could pay for something over ten weeks without interest.
At the time we were paid weekly so for ten weeks they deducted 2.00 from my measly paycheck.
I still have that watch and I'll wear it from time to time as a reminder of a simpler time. It still keeps perfect time.
I am sure those first guys (like Richard) got the fast snappy cards, but the VIP Thank You cards went out later because they had to work on those longer......... :P

We won't be picking it up until November 5th. If we did make it an October sale they would give us "free window tinting".
I said, I would like to help them, we will be paying cash, but I won't be paying anything until I see the car....on November 5th. Also, I am not sure if we want tinted windows.
Maybe someone has an idea of if it is a good idea to have tinted windows in Florida. I think it is something My wife and I would not choose. If they have a way to count it as an October sale and I don't have to do anything then it is ok with me. If I am expected to pay for a car I haven't seen, then I don't think so.

If your car is garaged and not in the sun for long periods of time, it is not that important because of diminished rear visibility at night. Most factory tints have "some" ultraviolet protection, but not a significant amount.
I used to tint every car, but the last few I have not. I have a rear sunshade (motor operated) which I deploy every time I shut the engine down. I also have a heavy front shade that is made for my car and fits the entire windshield - got it at the parts department - heavy cardboard with silver reflector front. I put a beach towel over the passenger front seat as well. The only unprotected area is the right rear seat.
I have the leather interior (saddle) and it can fade in the Florida sun - but I do not have a carport or garage. I will decide in the spring if I want to add tint and the dealership will do it at their cost for me - $135.00.
Since you have an enclosed garage, *driver, I don't think it is necessary in your case.

For your purposes I don't think you need them. You won't be driving down there in the summer when the cars cook in the sun. Not to mention that tinted windows and old eyes at night can be a dangerous combination. Tinting that may be legal in Florida my be illegal in northern states like NY (or maybe Canada).
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
I think you know the situation well. The car will be in the garage a lot of the time, except for about 2 months when we have the 535 down there as well, but January and February are not usually that hot.
I think what you said about impaired visibility is very important. We don't drive too much at night, but you do want the best possible vision you can get. We both feel that tint is going to make things less clear, so I doubt if we would want it.
The dealer emailed back that since we were paying cash they could list it as an October sale and get credit for it. The rep said we could decide on the tinting later. That sounds reasonable.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
My 535 doesn't have tinted windows and I didn't even consider that it needed it when we are in Florida. This was a warmer Jan-Feb than usual and it really wasn't much of a problem. I think the poorer visibility, especially at sunrise and sunset would make tinting a negative.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
I read your post before I answered Mike and tjc, and you make several good points. Jan and Feb are probably months when you need tinted windows the least.
They could impair vision at night, and I think they would....it is like wearing sunglasses at night.
And yes, they are illegal in Canada, but I think they have to be completely opaque to be illegal. I see some tinted windows that are pretty dark, and it is hard to see inside the car. I think the disadvantages far outweigh any advantages.
Thanks guys for all the help, you have confirmed our first thoughts about tinting.......better not to have it done.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
*driver, they install very, very light tints that have ultraviolet protection (the main reason we tint cars down here) as well as heat deflection that do not impair night vision. Most people think you have to have dark tints in order to protect the car, but that is not true. Ultraviolet light is what does the most damage to cars down here - interior fading and deterioration of dashboard materials and rear window materials.
I might tint next April but with a vet light tint and it must be non-metallic so as not to interfere with radio signals for FM HD reception.
2024 Genesis G90 Super-Charger
Makes sense. I think I'll read up about tinting, particularly in Florida. Any other opinions or thoughts are welcome.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
I do not recommend the least expensive contractor, necessarily. The only reason I am not tinting my new E350 now is because the worst part of the summer is just about over. I usually wait until spring to get a tint job.
The installation of the tint is the most important. If you get one of these fly-by-night installers, they can leave air bubbles between the glass and the tint which plays havoc when it gets hot - the tint begins to separate. Always go with a contractor through the dealership or someone recommended by the dealership. Also, the contractors who use laser cut tint by computer to get the proper sizes cut is preferred over those that size the tint from a roll. The windows must be properly cleaned so there won't be any smudges or dirt between the tint and the glass.
A dealership recommendation is always good because if they use the tinter for their own cars for their customers, you know it is usually a good installer an used to tinting the make and model of your car.
If I was in your situation and had a garage, I would not have the car tinted. So long as there is protection from the sun when not in use, you're OK.
